TAR 18 ratings thread
« on: February 21, 2011, 02:22:40 PM »
I don't see this yet, so here's a ratings thread for this season.

And people often want a source for ratings for the full history of TAR, and had originally posted everything I had in an old ratings thread but I never updated it (and it was difficult to read as I put in a ton of data).  But pifeedback as a streamlined basic information Total Viewers and adults 18-49 demos.  I corrected anything they had that was missing and its viewable here.

Episode one Fast Nationals.

9.17 million viewers and a 2.4 in adults 18-34 (our lowest season opener)

We were third in viewers and tied for 2nd in the demo for the hour.

We did at the least grow during the half hour going from a 2.4 to a 2.5

How did the rest of CBS do?  Well they sucked as a whole.

60 Minutes (first in viewers and 3rd in the demo)
11.4 million viewers and a 1.4 in adults

Tar
9.17 million and a 2.4 in adults

Undercover Boss (first in viewers for the hour, 3rd in the demo)
10.61 million and a 2.6 in adults

CSI-Miami (one its hour in viewers tied for first in the demo)
10.46 million and a 2.2 in adults

Next week will be utterly brutal.

I've checked my usual sources, as well as the ones Ms. Wood mentioned above, and no one has posted any final ratings numbers for the premiere on Sunday night.
But why the numbers were down on the broadcast nets? I can offer three reasons -- The Daytona 500, the NBA All-Star Game, and possibly some programming on the cable channels. Weather might have been a factor as some areas had ice storms this weekend, and reception might have been a problem.

But comparing the prelims to the top 25 that are available leads me to suspect that TAR was somewhere in the Top 26 to Top 30 range, in spite of everything.

I should have stated originally that it did better then last spring in total viewers, but that its adult 18-49 (which sets ad rates and determines how much revenue the show brings in) was what was a season opener low.  BUt CBS was down, down versus last year at this same period.

THis was CBS last year same week.

60 Minutes
- 11.360 million viewers
- 7.2/12 HH
- 1.8/5 A18-49

The Amazing Race
- 9.010 million viewers
- 5.2/8 HH
- 2.9/7 A18-49

Undercover Boss
- 13.763 million viewers
- 8.0/12 HH
- 4.8/11 A18-49

Cold Case
- 8.814 million viewers
- 5.6/9 HH
- 2.3/6 A18-49

Now this is this current year
60 Minutes
- 11.370 million viewers
- 7.2/12 HH
- 1.4/4 A18-49

The Amazing Race
- 9.150 million viewers
- 5.1/8 HH
- 2.5/7 A18-49

Undercover Boss  (look how much Undercover Boss has dropped)
- 10.679 million viewers
- 6.1/10 HH
- 2.6/7 A18-49

CSI: Miami
- 10.469 million viewers
- 6.3/11 HH
- 2.2/6 A18-49

Adults 18-49, the bread and butter of network tv was a low, viewers were not.  But unfortunately for many shows Total viewers isn't what determines ad revenue.  Otherwise shows like Cold Case, and Without a Trace would still be airing on tv as two easily examples.

Maybe that's why CBS had a returning racers season in the spring, rather than the fall. Look at all these things the spring season has to contend with. Maybe they're hoping that having racers who are already familiar to TAR fans (the cowboys, especially) will be enough to pull in the ratings the show deserves? :duno:

The ratings for the Oscars were also down 15% from last year, and NBC's Sunday line up was mostly in the 2 million range in total viewers. I have no idea where the other viewers went, because these are quite strange otherwise.

The good part is that as far as sporting events are concerned, the advantage shifts to CBS until late May, when the NHL and NBA head into their playoffs. But those are mostly aired on cable, now, so who in the heck knows what to expect.

Pifeedback had the Saturday repeat of Episode 1 at (Viewers: #4, 2.51 million; A18-49: #3t, 0.7/ 2).

No surprise there.  The Travel channel repeats used to get sent to the graveyard slot, and I still remember the UPN repeats getting pulled after a few airings.

Oh TAR has fallen below 8 million viewers 9 total times.

Season 3
5th episode 7.70 million
7th episode 7.8 million

Season 4 (which aired during the summer)
4th episode 7.59
5th episode 7.86
6th episode 6.93 (and the only episode of TAR under 7 million, though it was during summer where ratings are going to be lower)
8th episode 7.78 million

Season 9
7th episode 7.54 million
10th episode 7.70 million

We shall see tomorrow with finals where we place next to those numbers.

I honestly think we'll be seeing sub-3 ratings for the entire duration of this season. Probably 2.7s on average.

As long as TAR does better in the fall, however, it'll be okay.

It's rare for TAR not to even be mentioned in the Top 30 in a CBS press release. In fact, none of the CBS Sunday shows made it.

We ranked 23rd in the demo and 22cd in viewers.

9.782 million viewers
2.7 adults 18-49
In the demo we were CBS strongest performer.

Both Tar and UN got a 2.7 in adults 18-49, but with more details we scored 3.602 million adults in that demo UB had slightly less.

If the adult 18-49 number holds this will be the first time we have beaten survivor by a tenth, we have beaten them with the actual number of viewers in adults 18-49 before but it still was close enough for both to get an identical 18-49 number.

The weeklys actually had a fractional improvement over the fast overnights!!!!
And TAR beat Survivor in 2 demos compare:
Survivor
[households (6.3/10), viewers (11.00m), adults 25-54 (4.2/11) and adults 18-49 (3.1/09)] to
TAR
[households (6.2/10), viewers (10.96m), adults 25-54 (4.3/10) and adults 18-49 (3.2/09)]
And the difference in total audience was only 40,000.

Yep, first time we have scored a higher ratings in the key adults 18-49 demo (though again we have once actually had more viewers in that demo just not enough to show an increase in at least a tenth).

We were 14th for the week in adults 18-49, UB was 13th, Survivor was 15th.

And for the actually numbers that make up that demo.

UB 4.251 million viewers 18-49
TAR 4.222 million viewers 18-49
Both are equal to a 3.2 rating.

Survivor  4.061 million viewers 18-49

RATINGS NOTE:

As of this week (starting Monday, today) the measure of Final Numbers will be changing.

Previously Final numbers were Live viewers of that program (even if it started due to, for TAR, sports later in the night).

Then it turned into live same day viewers, meaning not only did live viewers count but also people who watched it on their DVR's or VHS up until 3am.

Starting today they are now added multiple viewers to those numbers.

For example, I watch TAR once off of Broadcast and then once more later that night,  Previously I counted as one viewer.  Starting today that would count as two viewers.  Of course I am not in that sample, but the example holds.

For most shows this will be a minor adjustment (and its should show a small increase), but for shows that have a dedicated (read insane) fan base and tend to rewatch a show and go over individual scenes it could give some shows a bit of a boost.

Unfortunately even though we are all insane, I don't think we represent the average viewer, so I am not expecting much increase.

I could see a larger percentage increase in shows like Supernatural, as an example to see more of a boost.  Its a show hows fans are insane (like Trekkies for the older generation).  For that Fan poll TV guide did, it managed to win out of the ten shows yet it had by far the smallest total audience (some shows like Castle have nearly 6 times as many viewers) yet its fan flooded the online voting.

Now I would love to see a jump for TAR (really love it), but I don't expect it.

The Hollywood Reporter is suggesting that all broadcast networks' numbers last night were adversely affected by the NBA playoffs airing on cable. With that in mind, here's what CBS had to say with the overnightshttp://www.cbspressexpress.com/div.php/cbs_entertainment/release?id=28046:

CBS treated last night's prime time schedule as "specials" so these numbers won't be used to determine the season average (right, mswood?)

For the record, the fast nationals overnights aren't been posted. At least some west coast feed markets never got to air TAR last night due to breaking news reporting the death of Osama bin Laden in a US operation in Pakistan.

I plan to post whatever CBS releases tomorrow for the final weekly ratings, but there's no assurance that the numbers will reflect a full national audience. (I'm betting that some CBS stations may end up airing TAR at some point this week.)

Final weekly ratings:

TAR is 20th for the week in the final numbers, and that with a total audience of 9.2 million.  That's a pretty clear indication that the size of the overall audience is shrinking further, as TAR won its time period.

After the special news coverage of bin Laden's death eating into primetime last Sunday, CBS eked out a win in the ratings race this Sunday night with an overall 2.3 rating/7 share in the 18-49 demo, according to Nielsen overnight numbers. The season finale of The Amazing Race stayed flat at 2.5, while CSI: Miami fell a slight 5% to a 2.0.

Clearly something affected the numbers this season, and perhaps it was the change in how audiences are counted as suggested a few weeks back. But the overnights still had TAR winning its two hours including giving the Donald another taste of his ego:

I have a question for the ratings experts.  This link over at Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Amazing_Race_(U.S._TV_series)  shows this current season to be the lowest rated Sunday night Amazing Race.  Is that correct?   TYIA

Yikes to the lowest rated season final ever! I thought this season finale was better then some recent one, but many people thought it wasn't
Maybe people were visiting with their Mothers instead of watching TV.

Yes, this is the lowest rated Sunday night season. This season has seen a 0.5-0.7 drop in the ratings for some reason, compared to the last. It could be the rapid aging of the Nielsen audience out of the 18-49 demographic, it could be the return of racers that turned off some viewers, who knows?

It'll remain on Sundays unless it dips below a 2.0, upon which it'll be shipped out to Fridays at 8.

Hopefully mswood will get a chance to respond, but she did post a few weeks ago that Nielsen has changed how the count audiences, and favors multiple repeat viewings more than it has previously.

The entire CBS lineup has lower numbers, but it still is in first place among the broadcast networks on Sunday nights.

And there's also the increased viewer options on Sunday nights. HBO, Starz, Showtime, SyFy, you name it are all airing Sunday night dramas on cable.

The other factor is that there has, in fact, been fewer sports overruns to deal with this spring.

I'll grab and post the final CBS press release for the week when I get more time. It's been extremely hot here the past few days, and humid, and this is weather that hasn't been seen here, literally, in 100 years this early.

Ratings have been how should we put it, absolutely god awful.

The one positive, is that as low as these ratings have been, CBS (and the other networks as well) have all been hitting what are probably historic lows.  And for us, thanks to Undercover Boss finally sinking, we are the number one show for CBS on Sunday again (even with these low scores).

In fact (and I don't have the most current averages) this has been the worst performing season of TAR in adults 18-49, ever.  And with the exception of season 4 (which was fully a summer run cycle) the least viewed season of TAR that aired during a normal fall or spring season.

Part of that might be due to All Stars (as Season 11 was also disappointing in relation to season 10), but we are still managing the same type of demo growth out of 60 minutes, we are still managing to beat the majority of the other shows on Sunday night.  Ratings are just across the board awful.  And not just on this night.  Its been a brutal spring for tv.

CBS (and Fox and NBC) sure better pray football airs this fall....

The overall numbers may be down this season, but TAR has generally been around 20th place in the ratings most weeks and winning it's time slot the second half of the season. I'd expect that would be sufficient to keep getting the show renewed. Despite all the travel costs, I'd guess that it's still a relatively cheap show to produce as well. As much as it may be a bit annoying, the ability to get companies to pay to have their products spotlighted (Snapple, Ford, Travelocity) helps too.

As others have noted, the saving grace with this whole thing is that TAR's competitors are also having poor ratings, so we're still holding our own quite nicely against the competition. Maybe this will spur TAR on to not doing any returning racer seasons for a long time.

The Hollywood Deadline site (deadline.com) has a post with the full 2010-2011 ratings ranking in the 18-49 Demo and the total audience, including TAR 17 and TAR 18. These numbers do not include "special" airings so at least one episode of each season were not included in these rankings:

(article link)

TAR 17 tied for 17th out of 141 with a 3.8 average, and TAR UB tied for 38th out of 141 with a 3.0 average.

Total audience (in 000s, out of the same 141 shows listed:
Quote
22    AMAZING RACE 17    CBS    11,925
Quote
39    AMAZING RACE 18    CBS    10,351

For a interesting comparison, TAR 18 beat Glee in total audience average for the year.
