In his video diary just posted online by CBS, Phil tells us that the first teams were due at the pit stop by 12:30 p.m. in the afternoon, as he and his crew didn't get there coming direct on their flight from the airport until 12:10.

The second flight didn't land until 1:47 p.m., according to the chiron graphic information during the episode.  That flight delay clearly changed the dynamic of the leg, because instead of being 90 minutes ahead, the "leading flight" was several hours behind.

I remember Phil's diary during Season 13 in Kazakhstan. He and Barry were trying to get the chicken farmer to do the chicken dance. It was hilarious! :lol3:

The second flight didn't land until 1:47 p.m., according to the chiron graphic information during the episode.  That flight delay clearly changed the dynamic of the leg, because instead of being 90 minutes ahead, the "leading flight" was several hours behind.

I saw it totally differently on TV. Phil was obviously on QF12, which was the diverted flight. It hit the tarmac in Sydney at 959am and the 8 teams were disembarked, through customs and on their way to the train at 1047am as reported in episode 1. If Phil landed at 147pm, how could he have been at Shelly Beach at 1210pm as reported in his video diary? There is no 3 time zone difference around the Sydney area so it's theoretically impossible.

The information you are abut to read has already been analyzed in great detail in the AR18 Transportation Primary Options thread, which I created initially, other debated and got corrected for episode 1 and is recommended to you.The information you are no doubt taking from a significant airline flight information website would show you that QF12 landed in Honolulu at 0159 on 11/21, then took off at 0238 on 11/21 to cross the International Date Line and land on the runway (not gate arrival) Sydney at 0959 11/22, about 90 minutes late and less than a half hour behind QF108 with its 3 teams. Phil then had to scramble to get ahead of those first 3 teams, which is what his Video diary tells us.

I wonder why Phil and the other big wigs didnt travel on Virgin Australia, VA2 leaving LAX at 810 pm. He could have gotten there in plenty of time to do his standups.

I hate to be crass, but maybe product placement money from Qantas was reponsible for not going on the earlier flight. Of course some of the teams could have gone on VA2 as well. A possible reason that teams did not is that the gap of over 2 hours until the next TransPacific flight to Sydney, QF12, would have been more than 2 hours as scheduled, which may have been too wide a gap.

AS always, the teams don't get to pick their first episode flights...they are told which 2 (or 3) flights are available to them.

From the two diaries available so far, we can piece together what Phil did in Australia:

11/22 arrive soon after 10am on QF12 and hustle to Shelly Beach
11/22 stand-up intro to pit stop
11/22 pit stop check-in
11/22 on way back to Sydney do stand-up at OceanWorld in Manly
11/23 fly SYD BHQ ZL878 dep. 1820 arr. 2010 and get some rest in Broken Hill
11/23 stand-up intro to pit stop
11/23 pit stop check-in

Path 1 - spend 2nd night Broken Hill, get ZL857 11/24 0630 0910 (actual 0933) BHQ SYD but then stuck in Sydney until QF21 to Narita 11/24 late evening
Path 2 (preferred) - get ZL4833   1805 1920 BHQ ADL, connecting with XM7053 2015 2240; 11/24 JL772 SYD NRT 0915 1656

There is a quicker, more direct way Phil can get back to Sydney and catch QF21 on the 23rd and get a full day's headstart.

http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,23693.2075.html

Phil's video diary shows him leaving Shelly Beach and going to the airport to catch the 6:20 pm Rex flight ZL878 to Broken Hill on Nov 22. So he got to get a bed there that night. It shows him flying back to Sydney. He talks about catching the flight to Tokyo. But here is the fly in the ointment. The reg daily flight from Broken Hill to Sydney is at 630 am. The two charters the teams flew on left at 8:50 am and 9:30 am after they dropped off the teams. The next flight from Broken Hill to Sydney is at 630am on Nov 24 ZL877. If it had been on time, he might could have made JL772 leaving Sydney for Narita at 9:20 am. But it was late in arriving in Sydney and he would have ended up on same flight with teams on the Qantas 21 flight.

Looks like Phil left Broken Hill on Rex Regional ZL863 @ 1325 to Dubbo and then from there on same flight number to Sydney. Arriving at 1705 with plenty of time to catch QF21 to Narita. Dubbo is a town between Broken Hill and Sydney. It is on the same highway and the train passes through there too on the way to Sydney.

So it looks like he was in Narita starting a nice day off before teams even arrived in Sydney on the train.

The connection through Adelaide does look good for production people that Peach thinks left Broken Hill about the time teams were at the station getting ready for the train.
