TAR18: Zev Glassenberg & Justin Kanew (friends)
« on: January 19, 2011, 02:54:35 AM »

Zev and Justin

Name (Age): Zev Glassenberg (28)
Hometown: Sherman Oaks, Calif.
Connection to your Teammate: Best Friend
Current Occupation: Actor
Previous Season/Result: Season 15/9th place

Biggest mistake you made in your previous season: We lost my passport.

Most memorable moment from your first Race: Unfortunately, losing the passport.

Favorite place you visited on your first season: Probably Cambodia.

Why do you want to run the Race again? To win!

How have you changed since the last time you competed? I am a year older -- and I have impacted a lot of little boys and girls in the autism community.

What are you passionate about? Acting and I love the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team.

People would be surprised to learn: I love to read.

One location that you hope to go on this adventure: Afghanistan or Chernobyl because I heard it's really nice there this time of year.

Biggest challenge you and your teammate will face on the Race together: Not losing our passports.

What do you hope to accomplish by running the Race again (other than winning one million dollars): To go farther. Plus, I want to have fun and create more memories.

Pet peeve about your teammate: He loses things and needs to stay calmer.

What would you do if you won the million dollars? Move out of my current living situation and find some new roommates. I also would get my eyes fixed.

Any strategic changes you will make heading into this Race: Yeah, not lose a passport!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Name (Age): Justin Kanew (31)
Hometown: Los Angeles, Calif.
Connection to your Teammate: Best friend
Current Occupation: Film Producer, National Lampoon
Previous Season/Result: Season 15/9th place. We were disqualified after losing our passport.

Biggest mistake you made in your previous season: Can't think of one.

Most memorable moment from your first Race: Zev whispering to the Ducks.

Favorite place you visited on your first season: Asia because we never left! Phu Qhoc, Vietnam specifically.

Why do you want to run the Race again? Because it is the greatest experience ever. I can't believe we're getting a second chance.

How have you changed since the last time you competed? I'm slightly more responsible. Slightly.

What are you passionate about? Love and Twitter.

People would be surprised to learn: My father directed Troop Beverly Hills and Revenge of the Nerds.

One location that you hope to go on this adventure: South America because I have never been.

Biggest challenge you and your teammate will face on the Race together: Taking care of our things. Mostly that's my problem, but yeah.

What do you hope to accomplish by running the Race again (other than winning one million dollars): Making it out of Asia this time and getting a shot at redemption.

Pet peeve about your teammate: Zev's a little too ambitious for my liking.

What would you do if you won the million dollars? Travel. No wait, I would stay put, buy a few important people nice things and sleep a little easier.

Any strategic changes you will make heading into this Race: Staple our passports to my chest and pack lighter.

I can't remember any of their clear skills as Racers since they weren't on the season for very long.

Keoghan explains the show's picks below.

Justin and Zev — Season 15, 9th place
Last we saw them: The best buddies were eliminated when Justin discovered he lost Zev's passport — after they arrived first at the Pit Stop.
Why they deserve a second chance: "It was so sad when they got eliminated," Keoghan says. "They were just unlucky. They're a team that definitely deserved a second chance because they're strong enough to win. There's no doubt about it. They were definitely more calculated this time. They come out the gate strong."

Catching Up with Zev and Justin from Amazing Race
February 20, 2011
Autism Speaks

Zev and Justin’s friendship started six years ago when they were working as camp counselors and the two have been very close ever since.  Zev has Asperger’s Syndrome, but they don’t let it affect their relationship.  They share friends and interests, and the friendship is as mutually beneficial as any could be.

Are you excited about the upcoming season of Amazing Race?
Justin Kanew: We are really excited!

How are you guys connected?
J: We both went to Greylock Camp in Massachusetts as kids and was a little older…
Zev Glassenberg: You are still older than me…
J: (Laughs) I came back as a counselor and we ran a world-class flag football program together.

Why did you choose to come back?
Z: Well, we wanted to come back for redemption and also for an amazing adventure.
J: I was literally praying for the opportunity to return since Camp Zobio when we lost the passport.

What makes you guys such a good pair?
J: Zev says he’s the amazing and I’m the race!

What is the game plan for this season?
Z: Well we just want to win and to have a good time and compete the best we can. We just will rely on each other and not on other people.
J: We also want to keep up a good attitude and just to be good to each other. We do not trust anybody! Just wanted to make sure we were standing on our own feet

Zev, how does having Asperger’s Syndrome affect you as a player in Amazing Race.
Z: The first time I was going into this brand new world and didn’t know what to expect. I had to change my routine and that was bothersome and worrisome. This time I knew more of what to expect, but it was still worried.

What is it like being back on The Amazing Race?
Z: Amazing. I lived my dream twice! I had a blast! I want to do it again and again and again. They should just have us on every season!
J: Ha, Ha, Ha!

So what are your day jobs?
Z: I’m an aspiring actor.
J: I work for National Lampoon making movies. It is a fun place to be.

What are your hobbies and interests?
Z: Reading books.
J: And rooting for the lakers
Z: I’d say that’s an interest.
J: Explain your art
Z: I do stuff with whole punches. I use a special paper and punch holes then glue whole punches into a design.

We have to ask, did you hang onto your passports this time around?
J: Heyyoooo!
Z: We were checking every 5 minutes.
J: I thought we’d get through one interview without that question! Zev had permission to ask me every 5 seconds. We were constantly checking!
Z: It was like a newborn baby. We wanted to make sure it was there and alive!

Catch up with the guys on Twitter at  @zevglassenberg and @justin_kanew

After reading both threads for episode 3 and this thread, I'm both surprised and disappointed that there's been no mention of what I consider to be an ostensibly racially offensive remark from, I believe, Zev.

After the scene of Kisha & Jen leaving the funeral home in episode 3, Zev & Justin had this exchange:
Quote
Justin: "Look for the daiyuzan railway station, Zev.  Might be some tiny little thing."
Zev (I believe): "Like their..."
Justin: "Zev."
Zev laughs

My immediate reaction was that Zev made a Japanese/Asian men have small penises remark that CBS censored, and, after re-watching it a dozen times, that's still my conclusion.

I'm extremely disappointed by Zev's remark because offensive comments like that are a deal-breaker for me.

The editing leads me to believe that Zev & Justin are the likely winners this season, and, after that comment, I really hope that's not the case.  The only way I'll root for them now is if they make it to the end and there are even worse and more offensive teams left at the end.

I think all of that is speculation? Spec as to what was said, spec as to the intention, spec as to editing.

Since we did not hear the comment, I myself would hesitate to read too much into it.

I know, basing everything you think about a team on one speculated incidence is kind of silly.
