On Dec 10-11........Rio (GIG) only received flights from these European gateways.....Frankfurt, Lisbon, Madrid, Paris.

TAR 18 Route:

EP 1 = Sydney (and Manly), Australia

EP 2 = Broken Hill "The Outback" Australia

EP 3 = Tokyo, Japan

EP 4 = Lijiang, China

EP 5 = Kunming, China

EP 6 = Kolkata, India

EP 7 = Varanasi, India

EP 8 = Vienna, Austria

EP 9 = Liechtenstein & Zermatt, Switzerland

EP 10 = Zermatt, Switzerland

EP 11 = Rio de Janierio, Brazil

EP 12 = Miami, Florida to the Florida Keys

I thought that Broken Hill leg is a tbc in episode 1 not the second one
Well, just one new country - Liechtenstein

Oh FFS, I straight away said the Matterhorn yesterday when I saw that mountain to the right of the church, didn't fit the bill, so declined....I am dying right now, I cracked it as soon as you posted it, but the mountain didn't fit, the church did in Zermatt though, but I thought I musn't be right!!!

I am actually pretty pleased with this...

Look at all the NEW places we get?

Lijiang and Kunming
Varanasi
Zermatt
Liechtenstein


Even Vienna was TAR 4 and Kolkata TAR 5 so not like we were just there. I think it is pretty good when 6 of 12 legs feature a new location. I am not worried about new countries, but I do love NEW places!

And more importantly, I think the visuals will be stunning!

TAR 2 went to Coober Pedy, which is also in The Outback.

Oh how could I forget that?

Locations are all important to me...and while having a full 1/4 of the race in Europe doesn't thrill me, I am eager to see how they make this work in such a busy tourist time.

But the new China locations and Varanasi make up for a lot...at least I HOPE they will!

Zermatt is a bit isolated...but a sort of heaven for skiers(I visited it when I was a child .but I don't remember well  ..) ....but there are some good connections especially to Milan and Geneva by train..

I like Europe! Switzerland and Lichtenstein are always good.
What's more annoying is no Africa. My favorite races have been the ones w/ the 4 traditional continents: Europe, Africa, and Asia.

The only destination that makes no sense to me is Japan. Seems really out of the way...

Well, they went to Africa in TAR 17 and they don't usually travel there twice on a row.

they did that in the fifth season. they started in NA, travelled for a long time in SA (Argentina and Uruguay to be exact), made their way to Russia (St. Petersburg!), flew to Africa and visited gorgeous Egypt and Tanzania, made a leap to Asia via UAE and India, then flew tragically down south to New Zealand, Oceania, and made a good return north to the Philippines, and then made their way to Canada and their end city in Texas. Woah!

I find it incredible the number of reeeeeally long flights: Sydney to Tokyo/India to Austria/Switzerland to Brazil...talk about downtime.

Not Australia.
I see what you mean though, there are different ways of defining the continents. I just looked up the continent of Australia on Wikipedia and it lists the highest point on the "continent" as being in Indonesia. I consider Indonesia and Guam part of Asia but obviously some do not. I also found that different parts of the world teach the continents differently so there is probably no right way.

It would probably be to difficult to transport the teams in and out of Antarctica in the one or two day time frame the Race likes.

They could go back and do a cruise to Antarctica, (2 days) and a leg (a day) there. Then charter planes would fly them out to their next destination likely South Africa.

Problems: Cost and time consuming.

Count penguins (or do something involving penguins, seals or other wildlife), climb an icy cliff, cross country ski, ride a snowmobile or snowcat and take an ozone measurement are just a few ideas. There are also a number of places with old shacks and what not left over from past expeditions. If they went inland, there are mountains and volcanoes that could be partially hiked.
 
Afterward, they could give back to the Antarctic by staying over a day and rebuilding an ice shelf.  

Or they could just collect old rubbish and cart it out.

Realistically though, it's probably just too expensive to do.

Interesting picture of production in Sydney a friend sent me. Trying to figure out what all the stuff in the picture are!!!

Some things I have picked up are:
 - The water bottle packets say 'Tall Ship Water' which confirms (or pretty much confirms) that the Tall Ship was involved in the filming of Leg 1A
- Cabling shown in this and other photos I have indicate that production may have been there since the morning?
