Just watched it via youtube... don't know how it was uploaded so fast :O

I think is the first time that C/S don't annoyed me... and didn't notice how competitive were J/T (BTW always read this as Justin and Tyler, and don't know who the heck are they )

It was a fun leg to watch, but now I wonder how N/K will be able to catch up now!

And N/V are getting better at this... i'm impressed

PS: Gotta love the clue eater goat :D

Two words as to how Nat & Kat will be able to catch up:  airport flights.

Anyway, i didn't like how Nat and Kat and Gary and Mallory arrived at the market with only 2 stores open... the one they have to find to direct them to the Ali Baba in a Suiq and the one where they will receive their next clue.

How did they fell so far behind? :'(

Gary and Mallory themselves said in the episode they spent 9 hours drving around and getting lost before they found the location for the roadblock.  If you think about it a moment, they reached that task at dusk, just about the same time Chad and Stephanie reached the pit stop. (There was more ambient light when Jill and Thomas arrived and received the penalty.)

I'm surprised Gary and Mallory escaped receiving the pity clue directing them to the pit stop before the leg was completed.

LOL at Chad and Stephanie for oversleeping! Like... On the Amazing Race? It was really funny though. Even funnier how they eventually caught up to the other teams and went on to win the leg! Wow! And that proposal moment... That was really sweet. I was really touched. And the fact that Stephanie accepted Chad so readily... Makes me think he ain't that bad of a guy eh. I mean, we always see Chad yelling at Stephanie, but seeing that she didn't question the relationship at all, it could be just editing that's intensifying Chad, making him a nasty guy. Cos I really grew to like them as the race progressed. I was hoping they'd win the leg! But when Jill and Thomas caught up towards the end, I was bummed. Who knew that Jill and Thomas had a penalty! I didn't see that coming, I didn't know it was wrong to hire a cab. But I was like... YAY! Such an awesome leg for Chad and Stephanie. Their joy when they were given first place was great as well. Love them now!

This was another exciting leg in my opinion. The first two teams kept switching positions. The third and fourth place teams kept switching as well. I was hoping that Brook and Claire would beat Nick and Vicki to the pit-stop but oh well, it's okay I guess. I'm getting really annoyed by Nick. He needs to stop being so harsh to Vicki! Ugh.

I remember Nat and Kat saying in their pre-race interview that they aren't great at navigation. We got to see that this leg I guess... Second-to-last? I thought that they'd completely picked themselves up since the Ghana legs. I guess they got lost like Gary and Mallory, but were lucky that the latter got hopelessly lost. If it hadn't been for them making a graver mistake, Nat and Kat would have been out.

Tearful goodbyes from Gary and Mallory... I'll bet Phil was sad to see them go too. I thought I saw tears in his eyes! I was really sad to see them go as well. They've generally been performing quite well, until they got hopelessly lost this leg and never could catch up. But as I always say, when the number of teams is reduced to such a small group, no one can afford to make even the slightest mistake. Well... I hope they make it to All-Stars! Hee.

I can't wait for next week's episode. Double U-Turn, wow!

Joab, I've been saying for several legs now that this edition has had the feel of the early editions of TAR, which in my view is a complement. I haven't tried to cheer for any team this time around, other than wanting teams to race well and not make stupid mistakes; and tthere have been a ton of those this time around.  But it also means that if a team realizes what they are doing wrong and fixes them, then they recover and race well.....which is the story this leg of Chad and Stephanie.
I'm not bothered by the fact that they haven't been dating long.  After all, we all have heard of couples that came together and quickly realized they were made for each other. Chad has grown in these few legs of the Race, and I suspect his decision to propose in the hills of Oman was a nearly spontaneous one; if you look at the reaction of the other Racers who were sitting there and watching they thought it was a good thing, so it much have been obvious to those who had been around Chad and Stephanie that they were a good relationship fit.
I'm also impressed that the producers have made much more of an effort to keep Phil informed this season...he already knew about Jill and Thomas violation of the rule about hiring taxis to lead teams (which was on the way to the pit stop) before they reached the mat. Another indication perhaps, that they had more budget this time around, and more PA's around to help keep TPTB informed along the way.

I couldn't help to agree more. The last time i felt so excited and wanted to rush back home every Monday to watch TAR was for Season 14. And Phil himself did mentioned before that Season 14 felt like TAR 1,3,5 and 7 all over again. I wondered if he felt the same for Season 17. Quoting Phil (if i never remember wrongly), "There's something magical about this season".

Joab,
It is about a 3 hour drive from Muttah to Jebell Shams. I think I heard Gary say that they went to the wrong north side of the canyon. N/K could have done the same thing. It is a long way to get to the south side where the drivers were. Then a 3 hour drive back to Muttah for the Souq. So that would make a total of at least 6 hours driving if they were all perfect just getting there and getting back.

It makes a lot of sense that they could have gone to the wrong side of the canyon. That would be an easy mistake and to make and very hard to correct.

I wonder if the maps were really bad.  Nat & Kat mentioned that the map they were using seemed rather vague.

A road sign when Gary/Mallory decide they have to turn back shows "Al Teekah: 10km". That puts them on Highway 13, right at the turn-off to the (other) road that leads to Jebel Shams.

Lonely Planet has this to say: "Although the mountain part of the route is only 70km long, it takes about 4h to drive and a 4WD is essential to negotiate the sustained, off-road descent to Wadi Bani Awf. This route passes through remote, rugged country and you should take the necessary precautions."

Hence the "That road? That's not good." by the folks from which Gary/Mallory were asking directions. Looks like it requires a complete backtrack to get back on track too...

I don't know.. i think the producers could have put signs on the road to lead them there? I mean, self-driving is good.. but if you have different ways to get there and such a big mountain, for race purposes wouldn't it be better to not have teams getting lost for like.. 9 hours?

Gary and Mallory and Nat and Kat were actually not lost in terms of directions.. they're near the mountain and can see the mountain, they just got to the wrong side of it.. which is like a 50% chance of getting on the right route or wrong route, depending on which one you choose.. because the Roadblock location can be on any side?

I thought the both teams were lost because they went completely off course in the wrong direction. Turn out they fell behind because they picked the wrong route to drive to the mountain?? Kinda saddening.

After rewatching, I'm still curious about this:

Is it me, or is there a missing task [after the Detour]? There's a fairly obvious break when everyone is saying 'Hit the road' and 'Drive yourselves to the Muttrah Souq'.

I don't think so Zack. Unless they are so good in editing, but I think there isn't. I would have read it the same way too, "Hit the road" ... pause .... "Drive yourselves to Muttrah Souq."

There's definitely something going on. The clue shown doesn't show "Hit the road" which every team reads out, but starts immediately with "Drive yourselves to the Muttrah Souq..."

Here's how the splices worked out for each team:
Jill: "Drive yourselves to Muttrah Souq"
Chad: "Hit the road. Drive yourselves to" *cut* Stephanie: "Muttrah Souq"
Claire: "Hit the road. Drive yourselves to" *cut* "Muttrah Souq"
Vicki: "Hit the road. Drive yourselves to the" *cut* "Muttrah Souq"
Nat: "Hit the road. Drive yourselves to" *cut* "Muttrah Souq"
Gary/Mallory: "Hit the road."

Can anyone pull up the Episode Credits so we could make a check?

Here, if it helps!

Maybe the route info has additional info that requires the racers to read-off screen? I remember seeing that once in TAR:China Rush.

Thanks!  :hearts:

I don't think they would put 'Hit the road!' simply in the addition information simply because it's just a cutesy thing to add (see also: "Time to hoof it!",  "Pardon me boy, you need the Transylvania Station.", and more recently "Time to solve a Russian mystery.") and not, like, a safety precaution.

I agree that something is going on. The clue shown in close ups have two paragraphs of three lines each followed by yet another paragraph. But look at this screen shot of B&C holding their clue.

In this it looks like only two paragraphs, and the first paragraph is a lot longer than the second. This does not match the clue shown in the close ups.

There are two more hints that there is some task between the detour and the souq. The first is simply the timing. According to G/M's exit interviews they and N/K checked in around midnight (08:00 + 16h). We see that N/K are finishing the detour when it gets dark at 19:00. Driving time from the detour to the souq is about or less than 1h. From the souq to the pit stop is just a couple of minutes. But still it took N&K five hours from the detour to the pit stop. Where did all the time go if not to an extra task?

Another indication is that it is pitch black when G/M reach the clue at the stack of books. It takes more than 1h to drive from there to the water trucks, which N/K are just completing. So at this time N/K is at least one hour ahead of G/M. But at the pit stop only minutes separate them So G/M managed to make up a lot of time somewhere. This could be due to bad navigating by N/K, traffic or an extra task.

All this makes me guess that there was an extra task which got left on the cutting room floor.

maf,

It may appear that distances are short in Oman. However, that is not really the case. See the Oman map below. Although it is only 82 miles as the crow flies, travelers report a 3 to 4 hour driving time.

I am not sure which distance you mean is 82 miles. As far as I can see the distance from where they picked up the water trucks to the souq is 66km (41 miles).  Then from the souq to the palace is 4km (2.5miles). Did it really take them 5 hours to cover those distances?

It's the second time this season (that I've noticed). At the end of Ep3 the voice-overs directing the teams to the pitstop didn't seem quite right; the only shot we got of a clue card was for K/R and it was the wheelbarrow card.

No, this is the clue the racers get. But they often get an additional sheets of information. These are usually tucked into the same folder as the small clue is. And you can actually see parts of that sheet to the left in the picture above.
