Racing report
Amazing Race China Rush
Season 1, Episode 4
Date 2010-05-07

I have tried to estimate distances and driving times every now and then. This data, from Google, is an approximation at best and the driving times assumes no traffic.

The previous leg ended on the evening of the 6th with the first team checking in around 19.00. Which gives us a pitstop time of about 15 hours.

Teams leave the pit stop on the 7th in the order they arrived:
  1. Rick & Josh             -  9:54
  2. Charlie & Rachel     -  9:59 (+0:05)
  3. Sean & Amy           - 10:05 (+0:11)
  4. Sarah & Molly         - 10:21 (+0:27)
  5. Deepak & Naresh   - 10:26 (+0:29)
  6. Bonnie & Mel          - 10:59 (+1:05)
  7. Janis & Aleksandra - 11:16 (+1:21)
  8. Lisa & Karen           - 11:21 (+1:27)

Teams must now travel by taxi to the Runyang bridge (100km 1:23). The clue box is at the top of one of the pylons. This is a large bridge so the pylon is very high.

Teams reach this clue box in the following order:
  1. Charlie & Rachel
  2. Rick & Josh
  3. Deepak & Naresh
  4. Sean & Amy (taxi got lost)
  5. Sarah & Molly (taxi got lost)
  6. Bonnie & Mel
  7. Lisa & Karen
  8. Janis & Aleksandra

The clue says "Travel by taxi to Yangzhou, make your way to Ge Gardens to find your next clue" (28km 0:23). Teams reach the garden in the following order: following order:
  1. Rick & Josh
  2. Charlie & Rachel
  3. Deepak & Naresh
  4. Sean & Amy
  5. Sarah & Molly
  6. Bonnie & Mel
  7. Lisa & Karen
  8. Janis & Aleksandra, got lost in the garden and had a big argument while looking for the clue box

Choice quotes:
"Because I am man... higher than you", Janis why Aleksandra should do as he says

The clue reads: Detour Blade or Brush

Blade: One team member must cut out an image of Haibao of the 2010 expo mascot of a sheet of paper. The other will be responsible for tracing a lacquer work design using traditional techniques and tools.

Brush: One contestant must correctly write a Chinese character 'Yangzhou' in classical script. The other will be responsible for reproduce a painting of a bamboo grove.

Teams complete this detour in the following order:
  1. Rick & Josh (Brush)
  2. Charlie & Rachel (Brush)
  3. Sean & Amy (Brush)
  4. Deepak & Naresh (Blade)
  5. Sarah & Molly (Brush)
  6. Bonnie & Mel (Brush)
  7. Lisa & Karen (Blade)
  8. Janis & Aleksandra (Blade)

Choice quotes:
"I think this is the best one ever", Josh just before his artwork is rejected

The next clue reads "Travel by foot Dongguan street, hidden in one of the lanes just off the street is your next clue. Find it. Warning Yield ahead". Teams reach the yield in the following order:
  1. Charlie & Rachel
  2. Rick & Josh
  3. Sean & Amy
  4. Deepak & Naresh
  5. Sarah & Molly
  6. Lisa & Karen, Yields Janis & Aleksandra
  7. Bonnie & Mel
  8. Janis & Aleksandra

The yielded team must burn one coil of incense. This takes about 15 minutes.

The clue found here reads: "Travel by taxi to the Yangzhou Ren Jia International Hotel. Once inside climb the four flights of stairs to find your next clue."

Teams reach the clue at the hotel (2km 0:06) in the following order:
  1. Charlie & Rachel
  2. Rick & Josh
  3. Sean & Amy
  4. Deepak & Naresh
  5. Sarah & Molly
  6. Lisa & Karen, arrives just as the first team completes
  7. Bonnie & Mel
  8. Janis & Aleksandra, arrives after all other teams have left

Roadblock: "Who is ready to have some fan". In this roadblock one person must eat 1.5kg of the local fried rice. The rice tastes very good, it is just a very big serving. Teams complete the roadblock in the following order (* denotes who performed the road block, and the numbers how many roadblocks they have done in total):
  1. Charlie & Rachel*     (2 - 2)
  2. Sean & Amy*           (2 - 2)
  3. Rick & Josh*            (1 - 3)
  4. Deepak & Naresh*   (2 - 2)
  5. Sarah & Molly*         (1 - 3)
  6. Lisa* & Karen          (2 - 2)
  7. Bonnie* & Mel          (2 - 2)
  8. Janis* & Aleksandra (4 - 0)

Choice quotes:
"Can I have a trash can", Amy plans ahead
"Why are the leading teams still here", Sarah slowly realizing that the roadblock might take some time
"Is it alive?", Molly wondering what she will have to eat
"He's seriously grossing me out", Molly comments on Nareshs lack of table manners
"You can get a whole child out of your body. You can put that into your body", Karen tries to use Logic on Lisa
"This one did us in", Bonnie assuming that the Latvians are ahead of them

Here we see that at least the first 5 teams are pretty comfortable with each other. There is a relaxed mood in the dining room and Rachel got a round of applause when she finished first.

The next clue reads: "Travel by taxi to the Yangzhou railway station. The pitstop is on a platform one." (11km 0:20).

Teams reach the pitstop in the following order:
  1. Charlie & Rachel, win a trip to Xi'an.
  2. Sean & Amy
  3. Rick & Josh
  4. Deepak & Naresh
  5. Lisa & Karen, tried to step on the mat simultaneously with Sarah & Molly
  6. Sarah & Molly, because Molly dragged her foot a bit
  7. Bonnie & Mel
  8. Janis & Aleksandra

The producers tried to create excitement by cutting things so we saw pictures from both Bonnie & Mel and Janis & Aleksandra in their taxis at the same time. But since we know that the Latvians reached the roadblock after all others had completed it we know that there was a significant margin between them.

Edited to correct roadblock statistics
