LITTLE ROCK — The Hillcrest home of a contestant on the CBS reality show "Big Brother" was destroyed early Wednesday, the same day she is to appear on the program's live finale.

Laura Grisham said her son, Nick Grisham, was awakened by the blaze at the home on the corner of Van Buren Street and Lee Avenue. Nick Grisham, who made it out without injury, is the fiance of Britney Haynes, the 23-year-old woman eliminated from winning the reality competition in last week's episode. She is slated to vote for the show's winner in tonight's finale.

Laura Grisham said the couple picked out the home and that her son helped move Haynes' belongings into the residence in July after she left to appear on "Big Brother," where she is sequestered from the outside world.

Nick Grisham called the producers to let them know about the fire, Laura Grisham said.

"He told them what happened and they agreed they wouldn't say anything to Britney," Laura Grisham said. "She can't do anything. The final show is tonight and it's live. There's no sense in her knowing."

Nick Grisham went back inside to rescue the couple's two dogs and family members have been able to salvage some possessions, Laura Grisham said. She said her son will fly to Los Angeles later Wednesday to meet Haynes after she show.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, authorities said. Laura Grisham said her son had been grilling and it's believed that somehow sparked the blaze.

The house was fully involved when crews arrived about 1:30 a.m., said Little Rock Fire Department Capt. Randy Hickmon. It took about an hour-and-a-half to get the fire under control.

The fire did not appear suspicious early-on, Hickmon said.

"But in the daylight hours and then you start interviewing people, that might change," he said. "But we don't have any reason to believe it would be (suspicious)."

A complete damage estimate has not been completed, but Hickmon said the house is believed to be a total loss.

this was added in the article after i posted the original News paper article.

He's concerned about how Haynes will react to the news, Laura Grisham said.

"He hasn't seen her in three months and he's afraid she's going to be mad," Laura Grisham said. "I said 'you don't understand son, you are lucky to be alive, especially after going back in two more times to get the dogs out.'"

Well, I don't know if I agree about the not telling her part.  Yes, they are correct, there is nothing she can do right now....except maybe try and salvage some of her things !!

Poor Brit.  Yes....just think  of her sitting there in the jury not knowing what everyone else knows.

eta:  the most important thing is that Nick and the dogs are OK...

How sad for Britney..The good thing is Nick and her pups are safe. Material things can be replaced but a loved one can't..I do hope she wins AFP I voted for her days ago but winning would certainly help rebuild her life

Not to be a cynic but since Big Brother can "fix" things they need to make sure Britney is AFP.

Her fiance Nick must be quite a guy for going back into that house twice to save the furbabies.

Hopefully, if Brit is second, and I sincerely hope she is first, BB will just say something like it was too close to call, and give her a check too! She earned it for being the most entertaining. So glad Nick and the dogs are safe.

I'm glad Nick and the animals were saved. He took a huge risk going back to get them.

I hope CBS matches the $10,000 she won if she doesn't win AC.

BB should definately match anything Brit receives ..she really played hard and BB owes any success this season to her humor!! I also hope she gets AFP.. but if they are not telling her before the show then do it afterwards and make a press release one of the few good things about BB that could be said this year

I am too glad that Nick & dogs are safe!  We had a house fire two years ago due to the landlord messing with the furnace.  My husband came home from the store in time to save two cats, but we lost three others, a free roaming bunny, and a beautiful aquarium.  Luckily we had renters insurance, but it's a very painful & tedious process.

Also, my husband now suffers from breathing problems due to all the smoke he inhaled.  I hope Nick doesn't suffer the same effects.

Now things are beautiful and I imagine the same will be true for them in time.  Blessings their way!

I think she should be told, I would hate it if I was the last to know that my house was burned.  Kind of reminds me of her hearing about the Brigade and being the last to know about that, only this is much much worse.    As far as the house it is a rental which means the owners insurance will cover the house.  I am so glad the dogs got out.  The rest of their things should hopefully be covered somewhat.

just an update on information i have read but due to copy right issues i can not post.

Britney was made aware of the fire @ 10 mins before doing interviews out back.  Unsure as to who released the information to her.

She  took it in stride and was releived that everyone made it out ok.

Nick never made it to the Finale Show. He was however at the hotel waiting for her after all the interviews were done.

Her mom was indeed in the audience she was sitting just beneath Enzo's wife and  Mother.

thanks for the update ugot.  Wow she was really composed in her interviews for just being hit with that.  Too bad Nick couldn't make the finale but glad she got to see him later.

TMZ reports an update regarding  Britney and the house fire

'Big Brother' Star -- My House Is 'Unlivable'
9/19/2010 12:40 AM PDT by TMZ Staff

Recently liberated "Big Brother" house guest Britney Haynes claims her Arkansas home is "unlivable" after a fire ripped through it earlier this week ... and the disaster could cut into her winnings from the show.

Haynes tells us the house is in horrific shape from water and fire damage -- and since she didn't have renter's insurance she might have to shell out some of her $25,000 "Big Brother" prize to pay for repairs.

That expense would be really tragic because Haynes says she's not even sure she wants to move back to Arkansas.

Now that she's gotten a taste of the big city Britney says she's considering staying in L.A. to become a star on the NFL sidelines -- as a reporter, not a cheerleader.

I'm sorry about what happened to Britney.  But at least her fiance and dogs are okay.  I guess the fire was accidental.  Anyway, I wish her the best and at least she's America's Favorite Player.

Poor Brit... no renters insurance... One thing I learned early in life was to always have insurance.

I think that she would make a great reporter.  She has a beautiful smile and great 'stage presence'...wit and humor, too--which help.

I hope we continue to get updates on how she's doing.
