Agreed that we are more than likely to have a second leg in Ghana!

Teams arrive before sunrise on the morning of the 29th, which means Phil should easily be able to get on the flight leaving late that evening to Frankfurt. Instead there is an extra delay, with Phil most likely taking a flight out the evening of the 30th, and teams departing the next day on the evening of the 31st. Not going to judge on Italy just yet, but here's how it's looking right now...

Brought over from TAR 16:

Haha, guess I need to do a little explanation of that table!

This table, which sets up the schedule for both the crew and the teams, allows us to predict the existence of extra legs (for example, the second leg in Shanghai this season), or the location of these legs (for example, that an extra leg in TAR 15 - Cai Be - was geographically close to Ho Chi Minh City).

The dates in the table represent the day on which most tasks take place. For Phil, this is the day he films his stand-ups. For the teams, this is the day they do the bulk of their racing. For example, if teams arrive in Puerto Varas on the night of the 29th but the majority of the challenges take place on the 30th, the table will indicate the 30th.

The schedule of the recent races (I started paying attention in TAR 14) follows a general pattern. Phil arrives one day before the teams, spends the next day checking in the teams, and sets up the next leg on the third day while teams are held back by extended Pit Stops, by transportation schedules or by hours of operation. An example in table form:

Leg
Phil
Teams
Comments
Leg 4
1 Jan
2 Jan
-
Leg 5
3 Jan
4 Jan
-
Leg 6
5 Jan
6 Jan
-

There are several notable exceptions. The first type is what I call short legs. This is when Phil films his stand-ups on the same day the racers are doing the challenges.
TAR 14: Stechelberg to Salzburg, Phuket to Bangkok, Beijing to Beijing
TAR 15: Cai Be to Ho Chi Minh City, Dubai to Dubai, Prague to Prague

I don't dare to present a rationale, but these one thing these legs have in common is the short travel distance. And as TheSchnauzers says, they are often temporally short as well, since flights are often not involved. In TAR 16, this comes in the form of Puerto Varas to Bariloche, Hamburg to France or France to France, and Shanghai to Shanghai. In fact, the legs on which Phil films his stand-ups the same day as the teams are racing are always the shortest legs, distance-wise, in their respective seasons. Short legs, at least since TAR 14, have never been back to back. In table form:

Leg
Phil
Teams
Comments
Leg 7
7 Jan
7 Jan
Short leg
Leg 8
8 Jan
9 Jan
-

The second group of exceptions, on contrast, involves long travel legs. Sometimes Phil spends so much time travelling to the next destination he doesn't have enough daylight to work with, and so the entire schedule is pushed back. These legs often involve long multi-leg flights.
TAR 14: Bran to Krasnoyarsk, Novosibirsk to Jaipur
TAR 15: None, since they stuck to major cities with good airport hubs
TAR 16: Bariloche to Hamburg, France to Seychelles, Seychelles to Penang

Leg

Teams

Leg 9
10 Jan
11 Jan
-
Leg 10
13 Jan
14 Jan
Long leg
Here, Phil flies to his destination on the 12th, while teams travel on the 13th.

The third type of exception involves the premiere and finale legs. Premieres, if flight schedules allow, often involve an overnight rest on the first day, giving Phil some wiggle room to film his stand-ups. For example, the TAR 14 premiere had teams travel to Locarno for an overnight while Phil heads directly to Interlaken for his narration, and the TAR 15 premiere had teams stay over in the magical Green Room, giving Phil some time for filming in Tokyo. This doesn't always apply, especially if the first leg takes place in South America. TAR 9 and TAR 16, in particular, had flight schedules with morning arrivals, meaning Phil has had to hustle to get his filming done. Finales are often single-day affairs. I suppose Phil has all the times to film his stand-ups after wrapping up the race formalities.

Leg

Leg 11

16 Jan
-
Leg 12
17 Jan

Final leg

After all that... Piecing together the dates Phil and teams are sighted along the racecourse allows us to fill in the table, allowing us to figure out where the gaps are and how long production has available for legs. Confusing, but it's worked pretty well so far!

Here are the known flights:

Boston to London, evening 26 May
AA 108, 1940-0700 (scheduled 1915-0650)
VS 12, 2002-0726 (scheduled 1945-0720)
London to Accra, evening 28 May
VS 657, 2254-0435 (scheduled 2230-0415)
Accra to Frankfurt, evening 31 May
LH 567, 2203-0638 (scheduled 2155-0630)
...
Stockholm to St Petersburg, morning 5 Jun
SK 732, 1014-1333 (scheduled 1000-1325)

The first Stockholm sighting at Arlanda Intl was posted on the evening of 1 Jun. According to the Accra spoiler, teams arrived in Frankfurt on the morning of that same day. That's not enough for a leg and a Pit Stop, but it's way too long for a connection. Could the poster have seen the teams earlier in the day, then waited all the way until 2am to post? What could have happened here?

If so, I guess we can explain the long wait in Stockholm as one leg on the 1st, and another on the 3rd. St Petersburg would then take place on the 5th. But that also means that the two legs between the Stockholm sightings are not geographically close to each other, so that an extra day is needed for Phil to film his stand-ups. So tentatively...

You may be right, but teams flying straight from Accra to Stockholm are likely to have made it into Sweden by 9.35am, and if they miss that, at 11.50am. They'd have to have travelled quite a bit to run into an Hours of Operation on the evening of 1 Jun. So two possibilities...

That's what I think too.  They could have visited northern Sweden by train, and flew to St Petersburg via Stockholm.  Possible!?

A couple of things:

Didn't the poster say he only saw a couple of teams on 6/1. Isn't it possible that both Frankfurt and Stockholm were connections at the same time to another European city, or all of the teams were on an Accra-Frankfurt-Stockholm-somewhere else flight? Also, because we have no actual sightings of teams in Stockholm (at least I don't think so), its possible that the 6/5 sighting was also a connection point (somewhere --> Stockholm --> St. Petersburg). I'm not doubting legs in Sweden, but with the race just visiting there two seasons ago, I wouldn't be surprised if the country wasn't visited again. Then again, if we do have solid sightings within the country besides the airport, I must've missed them and I take all this back.

If one of the detectives (peach, Neobie, woden, etc) could respond, that'd be great.

Definitely possible, but there are no direct flights from Accra to Stockholm, and if teams head to Frankfurt first, they should be able to connect to most European cities without having to go through Stockholm. Baltic Europe would have been a possibility had we not received the second Stockholm sighting, but I'd tend to think Baltic cities have pretty good connections with St Petersburg without requiring teams to backtrack through Stockholm.

ETA: Ran a check to see which cities would warrant an Accra-Frankfurt-Stockholm-[destination] itinerary, and the only two (neither of which really make sense) are Reykjavik and Tallinn.

The sighting of teams at Muscat Airport looking for flights to Bangladesh on the night of 8 Jun fit in well with our itinerary. Looks like one leg each in Russia and Oman. Phil has the option of flying from St Petersburg to Muscat night of the 5th, 8.10pm to 9.30am via Moscow DME and Dubai. He can also easily get from Muscat to Dhaka night of the 7th, 12.15am to 12.00pm via Mumbai. The same options are open for teams the day after.

The spoiler map is constantly being updated in the Maps Thread.

Understood. We're just not eliminating the possibility that teams travelled onwards by train or bus from Stockholm to put them in the actual destination city after dark, and having the majority of tasks taking place on 2 Jun. There's not enough evidence now to call it either way, though.

Only 11 legs? I have a feeling there's a missing leg somewhere in the early/middle part of that timeline.

Adding this:

Quote
A 13-episode season of The Amazing Race is shot over 25 days. Filming might start at dawn and last all day until contestants and crew are on a plane to the next destination. They catch as much aerial sleep as they can, only to begin again at touchdown.
