My friend in Penang thinks these photos were taken at Bukit Mertajam. I'll go run a few checks...

There is a very intense Buddhist ritual that requires pilgrims to bow every three steps and to prostrate every five. I wonder...

The Ban Hood/Man Faat/Wan Fo (Ten Thousand Buddha) Pagoda is the focal point within the Kek Lok Si complex, so... one and the same thing.

That's cool, Peach.  When I looked at that article I thought the Ban Hood Pagoda was different from the Kek Lok Si temple.  Perhaps teams got directed there looking for 153 steps and it was the wrong location after all.

We need a map...I think the taxis may have taken them to the wrong side of the temple, not the side where the steps begin...

There appear to be two gates (circled).  I'd be willing to bet the video shows them at the west side, and they need to go to the east side, where you can see steps leading up to the pagoda.

THAT's what we needed, I bet so too. Kevin who took the video said they were all pulling up and then leaving, like they were in the wrong place.

So it may be hidden in all this confusing dialog...but is the flag task a Detour? :res:

You guys need to be a little more clear. Sometimes I don't know what you're talking about.

Apskip, I'm not sure how you're reading the Thai timetable.  I see two daily trains and one weekend train leaving from Butterworth:

Daily Train 9 leaves Butterworth at 23:30 this train arrives KL at 06:40, then train 5 leaves KL at 08:25 (1 hr 45 min layover) and arrives Singapore at 15:00.  Total time = 15 hr 30 min.

Daily Train 1 leaves Butterworth at 07:45 and arrives Singapore 21:30.  Total time = 13 hr 45 min (no layover in KL).

Saturdays and Sundays, Train 3 leaves Butterworth 10:00 and arrives KL 17:30 then Train 11 (daily) leaves KL at 22:30 (a 5 hr layover!) and arrives Singapore 08:20.  Total time = 22 hr 20 min.

According to published reports, the Detour is flag task (chingay) or climb 153 steps (probably at Kek Lok Si temple).

For those having a little trouble reading the thread:   :groan:

Chingay is a Detour!!

You're Like Jason Bourne, Right?
NEW

The teams must choose between a 153-step climb or a 35-foot high lesson in Chingay.

I did read the thread. Nobody ever said that Chingay was the name of the flag site. And a "35-foot high lesson" doesn't necessarily mean it involves flags. Just had to clarify. Sorry if that's so inconvenient.

Thanks, chill_sd. :wohoo:

There is a whole post devoted to explaining what chingay is right here:

I thought it was clear, sorry if it was too obtuse. :duno:

I know there has been discussion of chingay, but sorry Peach I don't think all the information needed is posted yet so I am attempting to fill in some gaps:

Hokkien "Chin Yi" or "Chin Gay" means real art or true art. This art or true art is skillfully displayed by using the flag pole (Bamboo pole) and the flag pole ranges from 25 ft to 32 ft, the length of the flag is around 25ft, made from silk. The total weight of these materials is about 60 pounds.

In a Chingay procession (typically part of a huge annual parade in Singapore) the Bamboo pole carried perpendicularly by a steward bearer or performers with half-a-dozen others taking turn. The steward bearer/performers will normally balance huge poles with enormous triangular flags on their forehands, chin, lower jaws and shoulders. A skilled chingay man must be very fit as chingay requires the mighty strength of brawny biceps, supple limbs, physical co-ordination and lightning reflexes.

A strip of transparent silk steaming from the top of the bamboo to the ground trails as far behind as 35 feet. A chingay  man besides performing stunts must not let this soft material drape itself around and entangle the other performers. If the flagpole appears to be falling at any time, those other team members will move in to prevent it from crashing on to the onlookers and spectators or objects which may be in its path.

I think that info comes from the same link I posted, but the more info the better. If  experienced posters are having trouble, then we need more info to clarify. It is easy to get lost sometimes, I do all the time and then Boingo comes and straightens me out

So summary as we know it:

Chingay is flag balancing and is a Detour choice.

The other Detour choice includes climbing 152 (or 3) steps, probably in the Kek Loc Si Temple,

Somewhere in here we should have something to do with incense as well, perhaps carrying some up the temple stairs??

Unless the incense is a RB instead...we still need the RB and speedbump.

Should have another promo out later today!! :hearts:

New promo.  So we go from hauling coconuts to smashing coconuts (looks like maybe the Road block)?
