The Victorian Country Fire Authority has asked for any volunteers with "Structural Engineering experience and a passport" to contact the higher ups.

Sadly, I have no engineering experience whatsoever.

The new earthquake was not as strong as the previous one. This earthquake was much closer to Christchurch and much shallower.........with means lots more damage.

I also understand that the soil type underneath Christchurch was also a factor, in that the soil behaved like a liquid which amplified the shock waves from the epicenter.

(This is similar to the factors that aggravated the Port au Prince earthquake at the beginning of 2010.)

TOKYO -- A magnitude 7.2 earthquake has hit northern Japan, prompting the country's meteorological agency to issue a tsunami alert for the northeastern coast.

It warns that a tsunami of about 20 inches (50 centimeters) will hit the coast around noon Wednesday.

That's a tiny-whiny tsunami (20 inches). One gets larger waves from a category one tropical cyclone.

A 7.9  8.8 magnitude earthquake has struck offshore from the Pacific coast of Japan, and has generated a tsunami. CNN is airing the feed live as I type this. The estimated potential is for wave heights of 6 meters, or about 19 feet.

I'm watching something live on YouTube about the tsunami. It's a very disturbing scene. Water rushing through the country, fire along with it. :(

They're saying the earthquake is at an 8.9 now.
I thought that when we fought, I was to blame

I've seen you dance with danger; still wanting more

I've been watching the live feed from Japan, and whoo man, it's bad, especially for such a densly populated country...

Like REALLY bad, massive flooding, fires and other damage from the quake.  I think that since it was relatively close to shore the quake still had pretty damaging effects.  It was far enough out to generate a legitimate tsunami, but close enough so that no one could really perpare in Japan for it.

Praying hard for that country, and also that the tsunami dissipates before it reaches other regions (Hawaii, S. Pacific, Taiwan, Western US even...).

Me too.. I really surprise.. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said a tsunami warning was in effect for Japan, Russia, Marcus Island and the Northern Marianas. A tsunami watch has been issued for Guam, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia and the U.S. state of Hawaii.

The quake struck at a depth of six miles (10 kilometers), about 80 miles (125 kilometers) off the eastern coast, the agency said. The area is 240 miles (380 kilometers) northeast of Tokyo.
I really wish we could stay longer in the countries we visit, but I've been lucky to have visited most of them before, because I've done a tremendous amount of travel. - Phil Keoghan

I've been watching the live video from Japan as well and my heart goes out to the Japanese people. The tsunami looks every bit as bad as and perhaps worse than the one several years back after the earthquake in Indonesia. I expect this will affect numerous other countries in the Pacific basin as well. This is a sad day indeed. My thoughts and prayers are with the people in that region.

I dont get cable, so I cant watch CNN. I just saw pictures of people on the top of an airport terminal bldg. I assume it is Haneda Sendai Airport. I would think Narita is too far inland to be under water like in the photos.

These earthquakes are caused by the collision of two oceanic plates. The events started at March 9, 2011 at 2:45 UTC. It stared with a 7.2 quake

Number of quakes                Richter Scale
1                                           7.2
15                                         5.0-5.9
4                                           6.0-6.9
1                                           5.0

March 10

6                                          6.0-6.9
1                                          8.9
6                                          6.3-7.1
2                                          5.8-5.9
3                                          6.1-6.3
6                                          5.4-5.9
3                                          6.2-6.5
3                                          5.4-5.9

That is total of 51 earthquakes greater than 5.0. I filtered out the quakes that were less than 5.0 I am sure there were many smaller pre-shocks and after-shocks too. The average time between quakes is about 5 minutes.

This information is from the NEIC in Boulder Colorado.
