I've never seen CBS state that the entire night of new episodes of its normal Sunday night schedule were a;; "specials" before. That's a new one.  But it does allow CBS to exclude the overall lower numbers for Easter Sunday. (And if they were winning the time slots with those numbers, the other networks were doing even lower.

I have to say though, that I think Cold Case may have a chance to return next year after all. Their numbers have been up with Undercover Boss as a lead in.

There may not be enough time.  UB ends next week; guess it'll depend on how well CC can perform in the final two weeks following its break for the ACMs.

Yeah, not the best news ratings-wise, but definitely expected.  I'm pretty sure it'll get much better next week, thanks to the Masters (and Tiger's return), as well as those UB fanatics that aren't following Golf enough to realize that the schedule may be pushed back.
Every reality star is someone's favorite

Winning isn't everything, but it isn't considered nothing either. Otherwise, there wouldn't be a tribal council, a pit-stop, a boardroom, dimming of the lights, and so on

Cold Case will not be renewed, there is a greater chance of the sun going nova then CBS picking it up for another season.

CBS has far, far slots to fill for next season.  They will not, will not pick up a show that is old (thus thanks to having to resign cast and crew, and producers far more expensive then new programming) and one that doesn't (and hasn't for the last four years) manage to hit solid numbers among adults 18-49.

It won't happen.

Finals are out

TAR 9.12 million viewers #1 in time slot
2.8 in adults 18-49 #1 in time slot

And while this seems like a big drop, with it being Easter it really truly isn't.

What really shows is we increased again in total viewers from 60 Minutes (not normal) and we doubled it's demo.

And to put this in perspective teh strongest summer we have had on Sundays was All Stars.  And its the only other time we actually aired on Easter.  And guess what, with it being 3 years ago (and viewership dropping on networks each year) we actually had more viewers and tied the demo.

Wow, this entire season is so successful, but the viewership numbers are so deceptively low.

Total viewers (in relationship to how much revenue generated) is almost entirely meaningless.

As for viewers actually we are doing really well for the spring, where networks typically see as much as a 20% decline over the fall.  As with better weather allows people nationwide more avenues for their leisure time.

Overnights from CBS:

CBS WINS A MASTERFUL SUNDAY

The Season Finale of "Undercover Boss" is the Night's #1 Program in Adults 18-49

"The Amazing Race" Sprints to a Time Period Victory

CBS won its fifth consecutive Sunday in viewers and key demographics led by the season finale of UNDERCOVER BOSS, the night's top program in adults 18-49, according to Nielsen preliminary live plus same day ratings for April 11.

Editor's Note: Due to the late-running Masters golf coverage, CBS's ratings are tentative and subject to change. The Masters ran about 11 minutes into primetime.

60 MINUTES was first in households (9.8/18), viewers (15.35m), adults 25-54 (4.1/13) and adults 18-49 (3.1/11) from 7:00-8:00 PM. Note: There is approximately 11 minutes of Masters coverage in the 60 MINUTES average.

THE AMAZING RACE 16 was first in households (7.2/12), viewers (12.21m), adults 25-54 (4.4/11) and adults 18-49 (3.3/10) from 8:00-9:00 PM. Note: There is approximately 11 minutes of 60 MINUTES coverage in THE AMAZING RACE average.

The season finale of UNDERCOVER BOSS was first in households (8.3/13), viewers (14.12m), adults 25-54 (5.2/12) and adults 18-49 (4.0/11)from 9:00-10:00 PM. Note: There is approximately 11 minutes of THE AMAZING RACE coverage in the UNDERCOVER BOSS average.

COLD CASE was first in households (6.6/11) and viewers (10.66m); it was tied for first in adults 25-54 (3.5/09, with NBC) and tied for second in adults 18-49 (2.6/07, with ABC) from 10:00-11:00 PM. Note: There is approximately 11 minutes of UNDERCOVER BOSS in the COLD CASE average.

For the night, CBS was first in households (8.0/14), viewers (13.09m), adults 25-54 (4.3/11) and adults 18-49 (3.3/08). CBS swept these measures for the fifth consecutive Sunday.

Updated Sunday ratings will be available tomorrow.

I suspect any shrinkage will be minimal, since the overrun was so short.

And more importantly we were # 12 in adults 18-49.

Official season average is 10.378 million viewers and a 3.2 in adults 18-49.

If you factor in easter which won't be (I am curious though if Oscar night is considered a Special broadcast or if it's included, I honestly don't know). we are averaging
10.238 million viewers
and a 3.156 in adults 18-49

Both sets are improvements over the year ago.

In fact for CBS I believe we and Big Bang are the only two shows seeing year to year growth in viewers and demo's in both fall and spring (NCIS did in the fall, but I don't think it has in the spring).

AMAZING RACE VERSUS 60 MINUTES

2009/2010

People often complain (not just on TAR sites, but all the time on places like Marc Berman's Pifeedback ratings site, and on TVBYTHENUMBERS) about why CBS keeps 60 minutes as the lead show for its Sunday night lineup.

Even on this site we have had a few posters say its due o the fact that 60 Minutes has a much larger audience (true, but *).

But as tv revenue is no longer (and hasn't been since the start of 2005) been generated off of viewer totals, it is now generated off of demos, with adults 18-49 generated on average the largest amount of ad dollars, followed by adults 18-34, and then to a much lesser degree adults 25-54, then even worse adults 50 plus.

So I thought I would compare TAR to 60 minutes.

Not only among the demo's (I don't have solid data for adults 18-34 of which TAR easily beats the hell out of 60 minutes, or adults 50 plus of which 60 minutes kicks TAR's butt),
and viewers but also with and without Sports Overruns.  And the results are as follows.

Season Average (minus 60 Minutes one rerun they have aired this season)

60 Minutes
12.70 million viewers
Adults 18-49 2.49
Adults 25-54 3.28

TAR (this is cycles 15 and 16)
10.75 million viewers
Adults 18-49 3.28
Adults 25-54 4.15

TAR only has 84.6% of the total audience that 60 minutes has
TAR shows 30% more adults 18-49 then 60 minutes.
TAR shows 27% more adults 25-54 then 60 minutes.

Average of Overruns only

60 minutes (they had 12)
15.16 million viewers
adults 18-49 3.29
Adults 25-54 4.31

TAR (We had 8)
11.41 million viewers
Adults 18-49 3.51
Adults 25-54 4.41

TAR holds 75.3% of 60 Minutes audience with a Sports Overrun
TAR shows 7% increase in adults 18-49 over 60 Minutes
TAR shows 4% increase in adults 25-54 over 60 Minutes

Season results without the help of Sports Overruns (this was the most interesting).

60 Minutes
11.94 million viewers
Adults 18-49 2.05
Adults 25-54 2.81

TAR
10.36 million viewers
Adults 18-49 3.14
Adults 25-54 3.98

TAR holds 86.77% of 60 minutes total audience
TAR shows 53% increase over 60 minutes in Adults 18-49
TAR shows 41% increase over 60 minutes in Adults 25-54

So what does this tell us?  That on its own merits TAR is leagues ahead of 60 Minutes in the ability to generate revenue for the network.  That even with the strongest lead in CBS has (Football which out performs any other show they have) TAR still should generate very similar ad dollars.  And when one sees the half hour breakdowns on the nights with overruns, you see 60 minutes loses over half of its audience in adults 18-49 and adults 25-54 (as people either choose to switch channels or turn their tv's off).  Since TAR already performs significantly stronger in both demos, I would reckon that TAR would score even stronger results in the 7pm timeslot during sport overruns.

Now of course, this wont happen not even in the next couple years, and they will take a serious loss (in net ad revenue) doing so.

But 60 minutes is considered their most prestigious show and is tied greatly into their image.  It will take several more years of declines, before they will move this show.

3.1 demo + 10.6 million viewers. Not too shabby.

CBS lost four million viewers when the Hallmark Hall of Fame started; while 10.6 is probably just below TAR 16's season average and first in the time slot.

Because 60 Minutes has an interview with Conan O'Brien scheduled for tonight, I wouldn't be surprised if TAR's ratings are noticeably higher this week.

I will be offline starting tomorrow morning until I have something in place after I arrive in my next location.

I am curious to see how much of a factor this well be, as Conan's audience and that of CBS (let alone 60 minutes) are not a match at all.

Fast Nationals

10.49 million
3.0 in adults 18-49
and
4.1 (I think) in adults 25-54

CBS top performer in the demo department.  With 60 minutes beating (as is normal) only in total viewers.

Finals are out(at least from one source).

TAR
10.293million viewers
3.0 in adults (specifically 3.956 million viewers who were 18-49)

We ranked 17th in viewers and 16th in the demo.

And just to point out how far some shows have fallen year to year (something TAR is one of the most stable shows on any network).

We out performed CSI in the demo (what just two years ago was CBS strongest scripted performer).  ABC's Grey's Anatomy (two years ago ABC's Strongest performer) only had 185,000 more viewers then TAR did).

Fast Nationals are out.

We got 10. 63 million viewers and a 2.9 in adults 18-49.

The 2.9 in adults is the lowest adult performance we have ever had a for a season finale.

But our viewer total is higher then many seasons.

If this holds in finals we will show year to year growth over the Spring cycle of last year in viewer and in adults 18-49.  But not much.

Two reasons for the low ratings:
1. Mother's Day
2. A mediocre second half hour imo

I don't ever track Mother's day so I can't comment on its typical influence.  As to teh 2nd half argument, its possible, but who knows.

Personally since the viewer total is up versus last year, just not the number of people 18-49.   I would guess it had a lot more to do with the incredibly low total audience CBS had in general for anyone under 50.  60 minutes with a 1.6 (Bad), the two hours Movie a 1.4 (Awful).

In fact, with the exception of the week versus the Oscars thats the oldest average audience CBS has had for those 4 hours for any week that TAR has aired on Sundays.  I mean last year we had roughly the same line up 60 Minutes 1.5, us a 3.1, and another Tom Selleck 2 hour TV movie that got a 2.2 (huge difference).

Actually, the second one is only my opinion. Note that the ratings actually increased during the second half hour.
Really, I don't like how Phil is trying to manufacture drama (and fortunately I don't need to hear any more about Caite being the last woman any more).

Hopefully we'll get a less bumbling cast next cycle.

This is really bugging me too. If you want drama on your show, just cast people who will create it. They did do that with the casting this season, but obviously it still wasn't enough drama for them. :P

Final numbers are out.

We scored 10.576 million viewers and a 2.9 in adults 18-49.

That 18-49 ratings is the lowest TAR has ever gotten for a finale episode, but as I posted above, CBS averaged from 7pm to 11pm  the oldest its had during TAR Sunday run when everything was new.

So where does that leave us for the season?

Well thats a good question.

The average ratings for the full season was
10.305 million viewers
3.125 in adults 18-49

THat is not the official season ratings that will get published later by Neilsen as Nielsen will not count at least on episode since CBS decided to count that as a special (the April 4th Episode).  It is possible that they also included March 7th episode (the Oscars).  But I don't get that data.

So bare in mind that the numbers you see below are the numbers from every episode of every season.

TAR Rating History  Season Average in Viewers
Season 7:  12.559 million viewers
Season 6:  11.337 million viewers
Season 12: 11.193 million viewers
Season 10:  11.148 million viewers
Season 15:  11.132 million viewers
Season 5:  10.726 million viewers
Season 8:  10.670 million viewers
Season 13:  10.526 million viewers
Season 14:  10.412 million viewers
Season 16:  10.305 million viewers
Season 2:  10.212 million viewers
Season 11: 9.713 million viewers
Season 1: 9.506 million viewers
Season 3: 9.063 million viewers
Season 9:  8.852 million viewers
Season 4:  8.293 million viewers

Now of course viewers aren't what determines how much revenue the show generates, but with Network TV losing viewers every single year (out of the last 6), it shows how consistent TAR really is.

Now the bread and butter is of course generated by adults 18-49.  And we actually performed stronger in every single season before moving to Sundays as Sundays CBS audience is the oldest audience on tv.

But here is the adults 18-49 numbers since we have moved to Sundays (this is also something that has gone down year to year, even harder then total viewers for the networks as a whole).

Season 10:  3.79 adults 18-49
Season 12:  3.53 adults 18-49
Season 15:  3.38 adults 18-49
Season 11:  3.16 adults 18-49
Season 16:  3.13 adults 18-49
Season 14:  3.11 adults 18-49

Really, I don't like how Phil is trying to manufacture drama (and fortunately I don't need to hear any more about Caite being the last woman any more).

This is really bugging me too. If you want drama on your show, just cast people who will create it. They did do that with the casting this season, but obviously it still wasn't enough drama for them. :P

I also feel bad for that moment, Phil doesn't need to do that to create the confrontation. The only woman in final 3 isn't a TAR first and I don't know why Caite can be that obsessed about it.

Well The official Live Plus 7 numbers are out for the season (even though they aren't labeled as Live plus 7, idiots).

Viewers

#24 (out of 124)  TAR 15 11.912 million viewers
#26 TAR 16 11.186 million viewers

Demo (18-49)
#25 TAR 15 3.7
#28 TAR 16 3.5

For CBS we ranked #9, and #13 in the Demo.  And #15 and #16 (out of a total of 28 shows.

Of course this does include reruns for scripted shows (keep that in mind, but it s a could way to compare to other non scripted shows (reality, news, ect).

And of course scripted shows see far more increases with Live Plus 7 then reality and News based programming.

mswood, can you put this plus seven information for TAR 15 and 16 in context to earlier seasons, as you were doing in your previous post? I take the numbers to suggest that TAR 15 ranks only behind TAR 7 in overall average viewers, and that TAR continues its year-to-year increase as has been the case since TAR moved to Sundays.

I also take this information to suggest that TAR's average DVR plus seven increase is about 600,000/week over these past two seasons. And the demo numbers are good, right?
