That's painfully close to 12 million viewers. Expect another overrun next week with the NCAA Tournament South Regional Finals starting sometime after 5 p.m.

How exactly do overruns help? Do they provide more viewers or something? Normally, I'd expect the altered airing times to actually reduce airings when people realize their shows are on. Not that I'm complaining of course...

Well it really depends on what the overrun is.  Typically if its something that enjoys a large audience (say football for example, which easily gets double what anything on CBS normally does).  And what happens for an overun (especially one more then 5 minutes) is that it means if you wanted to chane stations you would miss part of those porgrams, the longer the delay the more you miss.  Thus people are more likely to stay with that same network.

Now of course sometimes its from sports (or news) that don't have a huge audience, and that can cause a real loss in viewers.

What's important is that the entire CBS line up on Sunday did extremely well -- even Cold Case made the Top 15 (and that show only had 10 minutes in prime time for the east coast feed.)

Here is how CBS described the numbers

Quote
THE AMAZING RACE 16 (8:50-9:50 PM) was first in viewers (11.99m), adults 25-54 (4.8/11), adults 18-49 (3.8/09) and tied for first in households (6.9/11, with ABC's "Desperate Housewives") in the 9 PM hour. Compared to last week, THE AMAZING RACE 16 was up +19% in households (from 5.8/10), +23% in adults 25-54 (from 3.9/10), +27% in adults 18-49 (from 3.0/09) and added +1.89m viewers (from 10.10m, +19%). THE AMAZING RACE posted its best households and viewers deliveries since December 6, 2009 (the finale of THE AMAZING RACE 15), best adults 25-54 and adults 18-49 performances since January 13, 2008 (the penultimate episode of THE AMAZING RACE 12).

mswood explained it very well. And with an overrun, people are less likely to change the channel and will stay with the network for most of the night especially if the promos for upcoming programs are attractive. With CBS' Sunday lineup, it usually holds an audience from sports (NFL or NCAA Tournament). There is some erosion or changing of channels after the sporting event, but overall, CBS usually does well with the NFL and NCAA Tournament. Conversely, Fox is also the beneficiary of overruns when it has the NFL.

Fast Nationals

13.02 million viewers and a 4.0 in adults 18-49, 5.2 in adults 25-54.  Expect all three to drop some with finals.

The dramatic increase in the second half hour is because people are looking for Undercover Boss...but we'll take the ratings!

Well on overruns we have had times where we increased during the 9pm to 930pm hour long before Boss, and when all shows after TAR have performed worse in adults 18-49.

So I wouldn't just assume that was the full case.  What it does show is people on the West Coast who are watching Boss, since they don't have a delay and why the ratings will most likely drop like they did last week when they factor in East/Central and PAcific time zones together.

The final numbers might not drop as much this week, as the fast nations for Cold Case still had them at over 10 million for their first half hour on the east coast, which is still the second half hour for the west coast.

The other thing to note is that the total audience difference between TAR and Boss wasn;t as great this week in the fast nationals. I think there's a reasonable chance these sort of numbers hold up better than usual.

And next week is the Masters, which, between the usual overruns even without a playoff and the return of Tiger, who knows what that could do to the numbers.

Yes for the first time on original episode of TAR beat an original episode of survivor, not only in total viewers but in adults 18-49 and adults 25-54.

We ranked 9th in viewers this week.

CBS Sweeps Sunday for the Fourth Consecutive Week

UNDERCOVER BOSS was Sunday's top program in viewers and key demos and THE AMAZING RACE won its time period in key measures as CBS won its fourth consecutive Sunday in viewers and key demographics, according to Nielsen preliminary live plus same day ratings for April 4.

THE AMAZING RACE 16 (S) was first in households (5.2/09), viewers (9.14m), adults 25-54 (3.6/10) and adults 18-49 (2.7/08).

UNDERCOVER BOSS (S) was first in households (7.3/12), viewers (12.86m), adults 25-54 (4.9/12), adults 18-49 (3.9/10) and adults 18-34 (2.5/08) and was the night's top program in all of these measures.

COLD CASE (S) was first in households (6.3/11) and viewers (10.15m); the show was second in both adults 25-54 (3.1/08) and adults 18-49 (2.3/06).

For the night, CBS was first in households (6.1/11), viewers (10.12m), adults 25-54 (3.4/09) and adults 18-49 (2.6/08).

Editor's Note: Due to the Easter Sunday holiday, all of CBS's primetime programs were specials.

Somewhat of a letdown in total viewers, especially with such a great episode.

PS- This week's press photos are crediting Monty Brinton, so it may be possible they have Exif data once again.

I've never seen CBS state that the entire night of new episodes of its normal Sunday night schedule were a;; "specials" before. That's a new one.  But it does allow CBS to exclude the overall lower numbers for Easter Sunday. (And if they were winning the time slots with those numbers, the other networks were doing even lower.

I have to say though, that I think Cold Case may have a chance to return next year after all. Their numbers have been up with Undercover Boss as a lead in.

They did it last year during easter (though it was a special) and with All Stars (the two legs in poland), which is why my numbers never matched official season averages.
