The Amazing Race 16 Ratings Thread
« on: February 15, 2010, 11:38:20 AM »
A new season, a new thread  :hearts:

As expected, the Winter Olympics cut our viewership down.  :'( :'( :'( We averaged 9.07 million viewers and a 2.8 in 18-49.
However, we improved by 0.4 in the second half, so that's always good news.

In other news, Undercover Boss scored a whopping 5.1.

The Olympics will wipe out everything but I don't think it's that bad.  The ratings for ABC were much worse then TAR.

Thanks for starting this thread, I just got back into town.

Just to give some perspective.

Ratings are compared year to year so we are getting compared to Season 14)

Season 14

Started with 9.198 million viewers and most importantly a 2.6 in adults 18- 49 (which to beat a dead horse) is the primary data used to set ad rates (in other words what generates revenue for CBS).

If our Fast Nationals hold (and it should be close).

We will have increased or year to year audience in adults 18-49 (CBS and really any network really could care less about total viewers).  We also increased in adults 25-54, and stayed even with adults 18-34.

What is really amazing is our growth.  Besides year to year comparisons the next largest indicator is how we faired compared to our lead in (60 minutes).

And in all regards we by far exceeded our typical growth (which is normally an increase of 30 - 60% in adults 18-49).

Last year this was our lead in.

60 minutes
13.11 million viewers and a 2.0 in adults 18-49
TAR 14
9.198 million viewers and a 2.6 in adults 18-49

So we lost a good chuck of its total viewers, yet improved 30% over it adults.

This year
60 minutes (based on Fast Nationals not finals)
8.205 million viewers and a 1.2 in adults 18-49
TAR 16
9.07 and a 2.8 in adults 18-49

Not only did we improve in total viewers over our lead in (which almost never happens with 60 minutes unless its a rerun and it was new).  But we improved a huge over 130% (that is the largest increase TAR has ever had over 60 minutes).

Finals are out.

60 min
8.222 million
1.2 in adults 18-49 (awful)

TAR
9.000 million
2.8 in adults 18-49 (pretty good with the lead in and better then last year)

Undercover Boss
15.446 million
5.2 in adults 18-49 (one of the strongest performances for the week for CBS)

Cold Case
Was put up (but it was pretty bad especially when you consider its huge lead in).

Oh and we were 27th in viewers (which is how we started season 14 and 15, and 30th in demo (which thanks to NBC having strong days each week is a little lower then normal).

And just to compare year to year this is an improvement of 16% in viewers, and 12% in demo from last spring.  It is also an increase of .1 versus the 2nd week of the fall season.

We improved a typical 61% over 60 minutes in adults 18-49.

And as Caelestor mentioned this is an improvement over last week not only in adults 18-49 but also (very marginally) in viewers a 9.09 million viewers.

What is very encouraging is the year to year growth versus much stronger competition for the last two weeks then the typical spring.

But that competition will continue with closing ceremony next week and then the oscars the week after.

When you consider that 7 of the top slots for the week were for Olympics coverage, 21st for the week is very, very good (and Cold Case just behind us). Normally NBC wouldn't even have one slot, which is what makes it impressive.

Well much of the lineup of CBS and ABC used repeats.  But what is very impressive is that while we always do worse in the Spring (Yeah Football does really help on Sunday) even with much, much stronger competition then we normally get this time of the year we still our showing double digit improvements over last year.

I don't know if episode 2 of TAR16 is a valid comparison because episode 2 of TAR14 was up against the oscars.

The olympics aren't the equivalent of the Oscars?

Yes and no.  Typically we hit the early part of the Oscars (their numbers are lower then and fairly close to the Olympics but still a bit higher).  But the difference is that typically on OScar night all shows are in reruns, last week we had the Olympics, originals on ABC and Fox.  That should easily match the Competition from Oscar night.

When i first saw the ratings of 9million, i was like.. OH ****, aren't we getting nearly to 12 million already.. how did we drop by almost 25% viewers...

Then i searched for this thread to read about what exactly is happening and i'm glad this is just because of the winter olympics... phew.

GO TAR!!!

Joab

We always do significantly better during the Fall.  Football does give us a boost that we don't get duing the Spring.

And three weeks in we are still (even with the Olympics) outperforming the last spring season in adults 18-49 (Really the only important number that we see that CBS cares about).

It's been infrequent to see the +7 DVR numbers. But to see the show back over 3.0 even with the Olympic headwinds is very good news.

Yeah I would honestly expect all episodes (with the exception of next week) until the end of this season to hit a 3.0 or higher in adults.
