Jody and Shannon

Grandmother/Granddaughter

Jody Kelly
Age: 71
Hometown: Round Rock, Texas
Connection to your Teammate: Grandmother
Current Occupation: Personal Trainer
Pet peeve about your teammate: Sometimes her clothing choices seem a bit too revealing
Favorite Hobbies: Triathlons, writing, reading and challenging myself
Achievements: Other than giving birth to my four children, I am most proud of leaving behind my sedentary lifestyle five years ago and starting to live a healthy, athletic lifestyle
Lifelong to do List: Finish a half ironman triathlon. Finish a full marathon. Publish another book. Motivate people to become active. Climb more Colorado mountains. Walk the Appalachian Trail. Go trekking in Norway. Bicycle through the Netherlands. Develop a TV show featuring elderly athletes
If I could switch places with someone: It might be fun to be Carol Burnett for half a day, but then I'd want to come home
Role Model/Hero: Sister Madonna Buder who finished the Kona ironman at age 78.
What are you passionate about? I'm passionate about giving hope to people who think they can't change and helping them improve their lives
What would you do if you won the million dollars? Donate half to the Strengthmobile Foundation and spend the other half on a 500-square foot condominium within a mile of Lady Bird Lake in Austin, Texas
People would be surprised to learn: For two years in the mid 1990s, I performed amateur stand-up comedy to compensate for a really grim period I was going through
Favorite place you have ever visited: Rural Ireland and Hua Hin, Thailand
Biggest challenge you and your teammate will face on the Race together: Communicating and working together as a team
What do you hope to accomplish by running the Race (other than winning one million bucks)? As the oldest person who has ever participated in the Race, I hope to show that age is more than a number

Shannon Foster
Age: 22
Hometown: Georgetown, Texas
Connection to your Teammate: Granddaughter
Current Occupation: Healthcare Outreach Contract Analyst
Pet peeve about your teammate: Grandma can get a bit uptight at times and has a tendency to get carried away
Favorite Hobbies: Running, dancing and swimming
Achievements: Getting my degree in Economics from Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas
Lifelong to do List: Run a marathon, earn a medical degree or physician assistant degree and join Doctors Without Borders
If I could switch places with someone:  I would never switch places with someone
Role Model/Hero: All the strong-willed and capable women that I am related to -- my mom, grandma and great-grandma
What are you passionate about?  Staying fit and healthy and helping others do the same
What would you do if you won the million dollars? I would backpack across Southeast Asia
People would be surprised to learn: I lived in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from eight months old until I was almost 10-years-old
Favorite place you have ever visited:  Either Angkor Wat in Cambodia or the Great Wall of China
Biggest challenge you and your teammate will face on the Race together:  Making quick decisions without my Mom acting as a middleman
What do you hope to accomplish by running the Race (other than winning one million bucks)?  To get a chance to travel with my grandma and to have an opportunity to practice making decisions in a fast-paced and competitive environment

Wow!  For a woman her age, Jody looks to be in pretty good shape!  And Shannon has a SLAMMIN' body!  (And I say that as a gay man.)

This is my favorite team going into the season. All the others seem to be kind of average, but these two seem really nice and easily likable. :yess:

I also love the new bios! They give a little more insight into each person's personality than the old ones did.

Despite they're really lovely, something tells me that they won't have the same destiny than Meredith & Gretchen. I bet for a Peggy-and-Claireish result

Same.  Jody could be a physical liability, and I don't think Shannon can make up for them like Nicolas could for Donald.

Yeah but remember Mel & Mike. Twice Mel did roadblocks that actually rocked (although the first could be due to lucky winds)

I feel they'll be out early, but not due to not being able to keep up with the other teams.  i think their downfall will come from some freak incident (bad taxi, having bad luck at a luck task, getting lost, bad connections, etc.)  i feel they'll be able to perform each task relatively well.

An interview with team Texas that's mostly about their workout regimen but also discloses the fact that, like the Wangs, they were a recruited team.

Sorry, uycocoa, but a self-description doesn't do much for me. Those of comparable age in a prior Amazing Race were:

Donald - AR12, 69
Gretchen - AR7, 66
Meredith - AR7, 69
Mel Whyte - AR14, 68

and topping the list by 2 years, Jody Kelly - AR16, 71

well, logically, she's both the oldest racer (at the film date) and the oldest woman to race

This has made a lot of people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move

Definitely and by 5 years she's the oldest lady too. Also TAR 6's Don and MJ were 69 and 66

The Amazing Race 16: Exclusive Interview with Jody Kelly and Shannon Foster
Posted on 02/22/2010
by Gina Scarpa

Jody Kelly and Shannon Foster, one of the teams on season 16 of The Amazing Race, aren't your typical grandmother and granddaughter. At age 71, Jody is one of the most active people in the history of the race, running half marathons, lifting weights, all while her granddaughter follows suit. The pair got off to a rough start on the first leg of the race and was never quite able to make up the ground they needed to in order to stay in the race. They were eliminated on last night's episode, at the end of the second leg. Today, they spoke to RealityWanted in an exclusive interview about their experiences on the race.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Whose idea was it to try out for The Amazing Race this season?
A. Shannon: Gram was definitely the one who went all out for it. It took a little bit to convince me because I just graduated from college. It didn't take long before I was like, "Life is an adventure!"

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Did you do any preparation before heading into the race?
A. Jody: A lot. We continued with our previous training with triathlon stuff and stepped it up with pilates. I did some extra things with weightlifting. I slept out in my car and on the floor and I did some sudoku to overcome my fear of numbers.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: You both live a very active lifestyle. Was running the race easier or harder than you expected?
A. Jody: Easier. It is much, much harder to run a half marathon. I've done there of those. I'm going to do a full marathon within a year and I'm going to do my first half iron triathlon.
A. Shannon: I thought it was harder, just because of the physical, mental, and emotional energy.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What do you think of the alliance that Joe and Heidi formed with Carol and Brandy, when it comes to things like saving spots in line or sharing information?
A. Shannon: You do what you gotta do when it's to your advantage. Carol spoke Spanish so it made sense to align with them. I think there would be backstabbing down the road and people would run their own race.
A. Jody: It's a game. It's not sitting around singing kumbayah. I don't think anyone ought to complain about alliances.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Were there any teams on the race that you connected with?
A. Jody: Not on the race, no, we were pretty far behind... a little bit behind at any rate. We didn't get the opportunity and we didn't have that much of a desire either.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What do you think contributed to the downfall of your team, in this second leg of the race?
A. Shannon: I think that we did start behind everyone else and that was not to our advantage at all. We did make decisions really fast but we didn't have very much information about the detours, with the condors and the llamas. The llamas did take us longer.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: How difficult is it to make up ground when you start the bottom of the pack?
A. Jody: Pretty darn hard.
A. Shannon: It's pretty difficult unless someone else makes a mistake. Louie and Michael did make a mistake but we weren't able to pass them.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: How far after Louie and Michael did you reach the mat?
A. Shannon: I'm not sure the exact time but it wasn't that far behind.
A. Jody: Between 15-30 minutes.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Despite going out early, are you satisfied with the experience and proud of how you ran the face?
A. Jody: Oh, I'm thrilled to have done this together with Shannon and it's a relief not to be the first one out.
A. Shannon: We were still hoping to go pretty far. We were pretty bummed out. We did the best we could with what we had. A lot of it was luck of the draw. It is what it is.
A. Jody: I'm very, very happy that we were always pleasant with each other and positive.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Are there any teams that you're rooting for to make it to the end?
A. Jody: We love them all, we really do and we wish them all the best. It's way too early to predict a winner.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What are you up to now?
A. Shannon: I just signed up for my first marathon in June. I'm living in Alaska.
A. Jody: I'll probably go up to Alaska in July and do a really long bike ride with Shannon and her mom. I'm going to enter a half marathon probably in September. I'm going to do a power lift meet in December. I have all kinds of things going on.

Amazing Race's Jody and Shannon: Don't Blame the Cow for Our Exit
Jody Kelly, 71, got a good-ol' kick in the head on The Amazing Race when a cow clubbed her during Sunday's Roadblock. "I was not expecting it at all," she tells TVGuide.com. "I was so close to finishing and before I knew it, milk was everywhere and I had to start over and milk another cow." The setback allowed detectives Louie and Michael to catch up to and pass Jody, a triathlete, and her granddaughter, Shannon, 22, leading to the pair's elimination. But the axed teammates have no hard feelings toward the cow. Find out why.

TVGuide.com: You were so close to finishing the Roadblock. Was it the cow's fault you lost?
Jody: [Laughs] Oh, no! I would never blame the cow! I've milked cows before and it happens. It was just unfortunate since I had to start over, and milking can take a long time depending on how much milk the cow has. It shook me up, but I was fine. I just got another cup and went to another cow. The medical staff ... looked at me later. But I'm not mad at the cow!

Amazing Race's Dana and Adrian: We had a strategy — and didn't use it

TVGuide.com: Were you surprised to see Louie and Michael catch up to you there?
Jody: Definitely because we had a pretty good feeling we were last, so it was a shock to see them come in. But it was also good because it told us that we were still in it and had a chance to move on.

TVGuide.com: What were you thinking when they passed you?
Shannon: Well, I was standing by the clue box, so I saw Michael find the pantry and get the other ingredients. Once he did that, he was done. I so badly wanted to yell out to Grandma where the pantry was, but I couldn't because it's against the rules.
Jody: We still thought we had a chance. Anything could happen. Louie and Michael got lost once; maybe they'll get lost again. Who knows?

TVGuide.com: Do you know how far behind them you were?
Shannon: Not exactly, but it was close. When Phil told us we were last, we were hoping it would be a non-elimination leg.
Jody: I was thinking maybe it's a good thing we got eliminated and not Louie and Michael because I couldn't imagine the grief they would get at the police station if a 71-year-old grandmother beat them. [Laughs] Of course, I would've loved to stay, but that's how I think of it now.

Amazing Race's Jeff and Jordan: We fought a lot

TVGuide.com: You were trailing from the start of the leg since you got on the last bus. Did you try to catch an earlier bus like some of the other teams successfully did?
Shannon: Yeah, we asked everyone if there was an earlier bus, but there was nothing. I think it was because we got there so much later that everything was booked. Knowing you're last, you definitely feel like you need to do everything you can to stay in, and at that point, we were stuck. ... The llamas Detour took a while too because everybody already dressed the llamas that were more friendly, so we had to run after the really stubborn ones. At one point, I slipped and fell on the llama poop. [Laughs] Then I saw one of the dressings come off one of the llamas and I was like, "We're doing that one!"

TVGuide.com: No senior citizen has ever won the Race. Don, at 68, came the closest when he finished third on the 12th season. Do you think a senior citizen can or will ever win?
Jody: They ought to have an AARP version of the Race! [Laughs] Yeah, we were hoping to do as well as Don did. I'm the oldest person the show's ever had. The average age on this season was 36. With that, it's certainly not likely that a person my age would win, unless there are a lot more older people on it, and that's not likely to happen. I think we had the most diverse age range in the history of the Race.
Shannon: A lot of the Race is very, very physical. I think there should be more mental challenges, but most of the tasks right now tend to be physical. If there is a fair balance, then I think definitely a senior citizen can win.

Meet the Amazing Race 16 cast

TVGuide.com: Was your game plan to have Shannon do the physical roadblocks and Jody to do the less physical ones?
Shannon: Yeah, Grandma said she'll do the cooking since I'm definitely not a cook. She actually knew what kuchen [a Chilean cake] was when she read the clue. I don't think anyone else knew what it was, so she was like, "Well, I can do this one." We didn't know it was so much running around or getting hit in the head with a cow.
Jody: We thought it would actually be baking a cake, not finding the ingredients for it. You can play "what if?" all day long, but I really feel that if Shannon had taken that roadblock, we might have not been eliminated. You can't tell. We have no regrets.

TVGuide.com: Jody, a lot of fans are in an uproar because you said you favored Shannon out of all your grandchildren.
Jody: Oh, I didn't say she was my favorite. I said I admired her the most and that's because I know her the best. I've got eight other terrific grandchildren. Shannon and I had this opportunity and she jumped for it, and I admired that about her. I admire that she's an honors graduate from college and she's taking the risk of changing career fields and going into the medical field now. I do love all my grandchildren.

TVGuide.com: What are you guys doing now?
Shannon: I'm training for a marathon. Grandma's training for a [half-triathlon].
Jody: I've located a [half-triathlon] that will be in September and if I can possibly get myself trained up for it, I'm going to enter it.

People's The Amazing Race Interview with Jody and Shannon

Amazing Race’s Jody ‘Rattled’ By Cow Kick to the Face
February 23, 2010

Texans Jody Kelly, 71, and her granddaughter Shannon Foster, 22, remember their Amazing Race journey fondly — despite spitting llamas, kicking cows, rainy weather in Chile and getting eliminated on the second leg. And as the oldest racer in show history, Kelly told PEOPLE she hopes she inspired “people my age and older to get off the sofa, stay active and enjoy the reminder of their lives instead of twiddling their thumbs and waiting to die.” –Carrie Bell

You were at the farm before the second-to-last team. Editing made it look like you were neck-in-neck.
Jody: We don’t know how exactly close we were to Michael and Louie in terms of checking in, but we were not all that far behind them leaving the farm. I would certainly guess we got to Phil less than a half hour after them.

What went wrong?
Jody: I was a little rattled after the [cow] kick in the face. I could also not wrap my head around the fact that the pantry was outdoors in a shed way behind the house. I went all over the place looking for it.
Shannon: The task before with the llamas actually took us longer. By the time we got there, the tamest llamas had been dressed. We were left with the stubborn, aggressive ones and I kept trying to rope these mean llamas for over a half hour. Finally, I saw that the dressing had fallen off one of the others. Then it was easy.

They say never work with children or animals and you certainly learned why animals are included in that advice.
Shannon: I’m definitely not a fan of llamas. I got way too much llama poop and spit on me.
Jody: The cow kick was worse. I had a bump on my head afterward. At the moment, in a state of supreme surprise and competition, I minimized the pain. I really did whip right around and go to a different cow and started milking again. Later on, I realized the possibility of a concussion existed. I probably did get a bit more flustered than I was willing to admit at the time. It was harder to operate after that, but I don’t blame the cow. Cows kick. That’s what they do.
Shannon: Getting eliminated was a combination of so many decisions we made starting with getting the last bus. Perhaps had we chosen the condor.

The water looked freezing.
Shannon: It was cold out there so we figured if we got wet and even colder, it would be harder to do the next task. We didn’t know there were wet suits involved.
Jody: Still, hypothermia is nothing to be trifled with.

How’d you come to apply for the show?
Shannon: We are both at times in our lives when we are able to do something crazy because we don’t have responsibilities. Grandma was the first to decide. It took me a little more convincing. I’m really responsible and thought I should be getting a full-time job after college, not going on TV.
Jody: And I was aware that their had never been grandmother/granddaughter team on the show or someone over 70. We’re a twofer and it got us on.

Did the Race change you?
Shannon: I always knew I liked traveling, but I have more of a travel bug now. It also put things in perspective for me. I realized I don’t always have to be the responsible one and do what everyone does. It is okay to have adventures.
Jody: In my case, I thought my life was all set. I thought I’d continue training the elderly and doing races but I have expanded my scope. I’m going to enter a half Ironman contest and I am fully committed to doing a full marathon. I want to bike through Norway and walk the Appalachian Trail. It reminds you of those dreams and to live in the moment.

Jody & Shannon ('The Amazing Race')
Monday, February 22 2010, 2:55pm EST

By Lara Martin, News Editor

CBS
Personal trainer Jody Kelly, 71, and granddaughter Shannon Foster entered The Amazing Race hoping that the experience would bring them closer and prove that age isn't important. Unfortunately, the duo were eliminated from the show last night after finishing last at the pit stop in Chile following a rather painful-looking incident with a cow. We gave them a call to chat about breaking boundaries, whether there was ever any concern about Jody's age and where they are planning to go on their next big adventure!

Whose idea was it to apply?
Shannon: "I think definitely grandma went all out for that as soon as she thought about it. She was like, 'We should definitely be on that show!' It took me a little longer to get my head wrapped around it just because I had just graduated from college and thought I should start a full-time job and be responsible, but after a little bit of convincing I was like, 'Yeah, life's all about adventure! Might as well go and do it!'"
Jody: "And here I am entering my second childhood, so the lark appealed to me!"

Were you surprised to be accepted?
Jody: "Oh, astonished. The average age of contestants in this season is only 36 so I was totally astonished to be cast."

What was the general reaction when you told people you were going on The Amazing Race?
Jody: "My children, including Shannon's mother, were very supportive and the training group I do triathlons with were extremely supportive. People were surprised of course, but those who know me know that I have an active lifestyle. One son-in-law even said, 'Well, you know it's a surprise, but not really a surprise!'"

How did the other contestants react? Do you think maybe they didn't view you as competition?
Jody: "Oh yes, that's certainly true. I think that Louie and Michael in the first episode said, 'Nana is kicking your butt!' They were very, very surprised that I could actually run faster than Louie!"

You said you went on the show partly to prove that age isn't a barrier – do you think you've achieved that?
Jody: "Judging by my Facebook friend requests that's certainly the case! I've been inundated with people who have said, 'You are such an inspiration, be my friend!' I think I've probably inspired a few people, and it would be lovely if that's the case."

Turning to this week, did you know you were falling behind?
Shannon: "Well, we knew we were slightly at a disadvantage because we were starting later than everybody else, but we were definitely still counting on a team making a mistake and we didn't know we would be eliminated. We suspected we were coming in last, but we were hoping for a non-elimination leg or that someone else was behind, especially with Dan and Jordan so close to us, and Mike and Louie."
Jody: "And we continued to do the race as if we weren't going to be eliminated. We never once gave up and thought, 'Oh well, we can't do this'. We just kept right on and did the best we could."

Even after being kicked by the cow?!
Jody: "I did have a bump on my head afterwards, no concussion though apparently, and I really truly did just turn right around and continue milking."
Shannon: "I'm sure that would make me a little frazzled if I got kicked in the head by a cow! I kind of feel like maybe that had something to do with it, it shook you up a little bit..."
Jody: "I'm not going to blame the cow or the kick... I have milked cows before and I knew they kicked and I had been as careful as possible and I knew it wasn't likely to kick again. It wasn't that bad, I was able to continue on, maybe a little more frazzled than usual, but the stress level was already high so what's one more little thing?!"

At the bus station, why did you not try what Jet and Cord and the others did by going indirectly to your destination?
Shannon: "We did ask a lot of people what bus to take and nobody was actually able to give us a route that would have been faster. I know our Spanish wasn't that good, and Brandy and Carol had an easier time because they spoke Spanish. I don't know what the cowboys did because as far as I know they didn't speak Spanish."
Jody: "They did get an English speaker to help them."
Shannon: "I know the Big Brother team actually had someone who recognized them and said, 'Take this bus, it's the best one'. They ended up missing it anyways, but that worked to their advantage."

Did you know who they were before the race?
Jody: "No, I had no clue. I thought they were very nice young people, it was nice to be associated with them, and good heavens they certainly have some experience on reality shows before."
Shannon: "We found out on the show. I didn't get to spend a lot of time with them."

How had the race affected your relationship?
Jody: "We were already pretty close, but I have more admiration now than before for Shannon. She is a really super person."
Shannon: "It showed us the best sides of each other and the worst sides of each other! We know each other way more now than we ever did before."
Jody: "I tell you what, I'll never go on a trip with you again unless we bring along coffee!"
Shannon: "Sounds good!"

Finally, at the end of the episode you mentioned another "big adventure" - any ideas on where that will be or what you'll be doing?!
Jody: "We'll probably go up to Alaska in July or August and do a bike ride from Anchorage to Seward."

Will you bring your other grandchildren this time?!
Jody: "If they want to come, absolutely!"
Shannon: "They probably won't - they're not really into that sort of thing!"
Jody: "How about I drive up to Denver and pick up some of those kids and go on up and make it a nice vacation?"
Shannon: "That sounds like a good plan but it might take you a really long time to drive up to Alaska!"

Considering they were recruited, I find that hard to believe. Great interview though, Jody sounds very genuine.

Exclusive Interview: Jody and Shannon from 'The Amazing Race 16'
Tuesday, February 23, 2010
 Henrik Batallones
Staff Writer, BuddyTV

It's pretty easy to choose Jody and Shannon as favorites off this season of The Amazing Race. Isn't it cool watching a 71-year-old run the race? But unlike most of the older contestants in previous seasons, Jody is an endurance athlete, having run triathlons and half-marathons. Her granddaughter Shannon also does the same, and with that, you have a team with some physical chops.

Alas, that wasn't to be the case. Luck had a hand in their late finishes in both legs. Their gamble en route to Puerto Varas--taking a bus that leaves later than everyone else but goes direct to the city--almost paid off, but they were eliminated after some difficulty in the Roadblock. In one snap, one of my favorite teams were gone. I had the chance to talk to Jody and Shannon earlier today, Where they talked about the cow that kicked Jody in the head, the triathlons they run together, and whether that kuchen tastes any good.

Jody, how did you get started with being an endurance athlete? I'm sure that prepared you for the race, being the oldest contestant on the show.

Jody: Although I had always thought I should become active, I remained a couch potato until one day when I tried to run up some stairs and nearly passed out. Shortly after that, I turned 69 and realized that 70 was coming next--if I made to that age. A friend had mentioned a triathlon training group, so before I could back down, I signed up for training. Doing an 800-meter swim, a 12-mile bike ride, and a three-mile run was the most audacious, death-defying, life-affirming thing I could think of. Getting fit made The Amazing Race possible.

How did your family react when you decided to go?

Jody: My four adult children and nine grandchildren, including my teammate Shannon, were very supportive and didn't think I was completely crazy. Or if they did, they kept it to themselves.

Shannon, you were born almost fifty years after your grandmother, and here you are, running the race together, stresses and all. Did the age gap affect your race at times, or was it smooth sailing all throughout?

Jody: There were certainly tense moments throughout the race. I don't think there is such a thing as smooth sailing when you're racing around the world. I did not notice a generation gap though. I think my grandma and I are a lot alike and we understand each other quite a bit--more so now after seeing the best and the worst in each other as went from plane to bus to funicular in our pursuit of each pit stop, with all the sleep deprivation and stresses that the race involves.

What was your favorite part of the race?

Shannon: There were a lot of surreal moments throughout the race where it would dawn on us that we were actually in Chile racing around the world. I think my favorite part of the race was finding out in the first leg that we had not been eliminated. But the high wire takes a close second! I kept thinking, "here I am, walking across a high wire in Chile in my race to a pit stop on The Amazing Race." And it was demanding enough physically that I could really feel proud of myself for accomplishing something that I had never done before.

Jody: I loved southern Chile and want to go there again to spend some time hiking the mountains. I also loved arriving at the first pit stop and realizing that we weren't being eliminated then and there.

You took the last bus to Puerto Varas, and despite knowing you were dead last, you were very optimistic of your chances. Was there a time during that second leg when you both thought, "this is it, we're going home after this leg"?

Jody: We never lost hope because luck is such a prominent factor for all the teams. We knew we were lagging, but there's no point in going negative. We continued racing just as if we might be the first team to reach the pit stop. We also remained totally supportive of each other.

Shannon: I guess that was always a possibility, but we knew enough about the race to know that teams make mistakes all the time, like Mike and Louie getting turned around.  We had seen several teams right ahead of us and we certainly hoped we were not last.

Jody, did getting kicked in the head by a cow really hurt? You seem to just take it in stride...

Jody: At the time, I was shaken up but didn't feel much pain. It wasn't until a little later that the bump on my noggin made itself known. Since I've milked cows before, I knew that one kick wasn't the end of the world. I got right back to it and completed the task.

Do you think you accomplished what you set out to do on the race, despite being there for only two legs?

Shannon: I think both of us got the taste of adventure and challenge that we were looking for and have now realized how much we both have the travel bug. So the race has changed our lives in that respect and we'll probably go on to have far more adventures than we would otherwise have had. Also, I feel like we really did get to know one another--the best and the worst of each other--and have grown much closer for that. I have considerable respect for my grandma and I think we'll take it upon ourselves to have more adventures together in the future as well.

Jody: I believe I proved that there's more to life than sitting on the sofa, that age is no barrier to having a good time, and that while being older may not be better than being young, it's just as valuable. I hope I've inspired at least one elderly person to roll off the recliner and become active.

What are you both up to now?

Jody: I'm back at my business, Strengthmobile, and working as a personal trainer with elderly and disabled people. I'm also training for my first half ironman triathlon and planning more trips that have an adventure component to them, such as a long bike ride in Alaska this summer.

Shannon: I am currently in Anchorage, Alaska getting some experience and prerequisites for a career in health care. I am signed up for my first full marathon in June and I am planning on doing a 100+ mile bike race from Anchorage to Seward in July. I am also trying out cross country skiing and rock climbing, which seem to be popular activities here in Alaska.

Finally, did the kuchen taste good?

Jody: The kuchen was delicious, though it was a lot more custard-like than the kind I make.

Shannon: The kuchen was absolutely delicious, especially after forgetting to eat in our mad rush from pit stop to detour to roadblock. And anything that you have to get kicked in the head by a cow to eat, as grandma did, has got to taste a little sweeter.

'Amazing Race' ends for local grandmother

In the end, a cake-baking challenge did them in.

Jody Kelly, a Round Rock grandmother and the oldest contestant ever to appear on "The Amazing Race," got kicked in the head while milking a cow, then couldn't find an outdoor pantry where butter and flour were kept.

And so, Kelly and her 22-year-old granddaughter, Shannon Foster, were eliminated Feb. 21 , the second team booted off the 16th season of the popular CBS television reality show in which teams race around the world, competing in physical and mental challenges as they vie for a $1 million prize.

Besides Kelly and Foster, this season's competition featured 10 other two-person teams, including a pair of police detectives from Rhode Island, a lesbian couple and former Miss Teen USA pageant contestant Caite Upton, who famously flubbed her answer when asked why a fifth of Americans can't locate the United States on a map.

Kelly, who was 71 at the time of filming late last fall, slept on her living room floor and in her car before the race to get used to being outside her comfort zone. She ran, walked carrying a weighted backpack, and toned up her gray matter, practicing Sudoku puzzles and brain twisters before the competition. She and Foster also participated in three local adventure races to hone their skills.

"I'm sure they didn't expect much (from us)," Kelly says.

Kelly's goals were to have fun (she did), not be the first team eliminated (they were not) and not scream at her granddaughter (she didn't, at least not on camera).

"It's amazing to be 50 years apart in age and able to communicate reasonably well," Kelly says.

The experience wasn't at all glamorous, she says, and involved a lot of sleeping on buses and mediocre airplane meals.

Jody is having another RACE adventure!!

She has been honored by being asked to represent Team USA at the Sprint Triathlon World Championships in September 2010, in Budapest!

On September 8, she'll race the aquathlon (run, swim, run) for Team USA and on the 11th, she'll race the sprint triathlon (swim, bike, run), competing in the women's 70-74 age group.

You can read more at her Facebook Page.

There are loads of expenses involved (hotel, plane ticket, bike shipment, TeamUSA uniforms, entry fees, and meals), so if you would like to donate a few $$ to help her accomplish this dream, you can lend a hand right here!

Go to paypal.com amd enter send $$ to strengthmobile@gmail.com

Best of luck to Jody!! :hearts:

I loved Jody & Shannon in s16, definitely one of the best teams out there. Jody really did kick some butt on the Chilean legs, but I can't blame them for getting eliminated. It was basically a do or die RB when it came down to a drive race to the PS.

If they auditioned and got casted for season 15, I think they would've done better than Maria & Tiffany and kicked some serious butt out there.  ;)

Just wanted to let you all know that Jody has died.

From her daughter:

<<Jody Kelly aka Dr. Josephine Moore was a teacher at ISB 1976-1978, USL (ULL), tech writer at IBM and Vignette, an Amazing Race contestant (TAR16), a triathlete, comedian, artist, author, student of Spanish, dragon boat paddler, mother, grandmother, grat-grandmother and liver of life to the fullest.
She was also my mom.
She passed suddenly but peacefully at Spanish camp on Tuesday 9/5 in the beautiful north woods of MN on a walk to show a friend a flock of wild turkeys. They didn’t find the turkeys, but that evening the turkeys walked directly through the middle of the camp. Perhaps they were looking for her.>>

One of my favorite racers...please hold her in your hearts!

RIP Jody. I loved her so much and wished they could have gone a little further in the race <3

At the time of filming, she also held the distinction of being the oldest racer ever - 71
