Here are the primary things to see and do in this area:
o Visit any of several National Parks
o Class II to IV White Water Rafting
o Horseback day trips and multi-day Horse Treks
o Volcano ascents
o Countless Fly Fishing rivers
o Sea Kayaking
o Boat trips to Argentina
Now, a couple of thoughts come to my mind. First is the possiblity of a throwback-type DETOUR, the white water rafting on the Petrohue River that happened in AR11 episode 3 with some major navigation issues for several teams. Second, the idea of boat trips to Argentina is interesting because we know that teams have to use some tranportation method to get to Bariloche yet we do not know how they did it.
I am ready to hypothesize that this is how teams got from Puerto Varas to Bariloche, assuming that several of the side trips along the way were ignored by World Race Productions in making the arrangements. This is a daily 2-day tour offered in Puerto Varas and in reverse from Bariloche, but I believe it was compressed into one day for AR16 teams.
The Lake District of Chile stretches from Temuco south to Puerto Montt and from the Pacific east to the Andes. Where the Lake District ends, Patagonia begins. The "Lake District Crossing" is one of South America's most popular surface crossings via a series of motorlaunches and motorcoaches through spectacular scenery - snow-capped mountian peaks, gloriously green forests and azul blue lake.
The Andean Lake Crossing or Cruce de Lagos
is an adventure from Puerto Varas to Bariloche or viceversa. This is an amazing adventure that givesyou the option of discovering different lakes during the navigation that takes 2 days: from Llanquihue Lake, to Todos los Santos Lake, then Frias Lake and finally Nahuel Huapi Lake.
* Day 1 Puerto Varas - Peulla
Departure from Puerto Varas to Petrohué, bordering Llanquihue Lake, with amazing views of Osorno and Calbuco Volcanoes. Visit to Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park, and its Petrohué Falls. Continue sailing through Todos Los Santos Lake enjoying an even more spectular view of Osorno volcano, Puntiagudo and Tronador hills. Arrival at Peulla, ecological town, paradise of nature lovers.
* Day 2 Peulla - Bariloche
Departure to Puerto Frias (the Chilean Customs Point). Cross the Andes Mountain and continue down the winding road that leads to Puerto Frias. Cruise on Lake Frias to Puerto Alegre. Arrival at Puerto Blest. Visit to Cántaros Falls. Departure from Puerto Blest on the last cruise to Puerto Pañuelo. Upon arrival, board the bus that will take you on the last stretch to Bariloche, Argentina, a city that beckons tourist all-year round with its wide variety of ski resorts, shops, hotels,restaurants and entertaining nightlife.
Alternatively, the timetable for this crossing in one day Puerto Varas to Bariloche is as follows:

Puella arr. 1230 dep. 1400 (Note: a long lunch break is not consistent with the way Amazing Races are set up, so there would probably be no more than 30 mintues is Puella)

If you subtract off the 1 hour less break in Puella be 2030. That gives a 12 hour trip.

For best results for the local Puerto Varas map, I recommend using the 7th notch down from the top on the slider in the top left. Puerto Montt is 10 miles from Puerto Varas and just off the bottom edge of the map.

On the south coast of the Nahuel Huapi Lake, just a two hour flight from Buenos Aires, is the beautiful San Carlos de Bariloche (AAka Bariloche) with views of soaring mountains, clear lakes, and beautiful pine woods, all in the heartland of the nearby Nahuel Huapi National Park and charming Swiss chalet style stone and wooden architecture, international ski slopes, and renowned chocolate shops.
Bariloche is in close proximity to other nearby attractions to the renowned Circuito Chico, and even day trips to the enchanting Isla Victoria, opportunities are plentiful for the dream sight-seeing vacation. Bariloche's guided river rafting, paragliding, kayaking, golfing, are all within the city or in close proximity. For intense thrill-seekers, mountaineering excursions are a popular attraction featuring repelling, climbing or biking.

Circuito Chico he "Circuito Chico" is a 62-km round trip around Bariloche. You start at the Civic Center and, west along Bustillos Ave., you go around the Lago Nahuel Huapi (Nahuel Huapi lake) till the Lago Moreno (Moreno Lake).
Km 1. "Parque Ecoturístico Cerro Viejo" (Old Hill Ecological-Touristic Park) It was founded in 1998 and has lots of attractions: a 900-meter high chair lift, sculptures carved in wood, a mountaineering museum, a local flora track, a little forest of "arrayanes" and a huge slide.
Km 4. Candles and Handmade Ceramics - regional stores full of souvenirs: candles of different shapes and colors and hand-painted ceramic objects.
Km 5. "Teleférico Cerro Otto" (Otto Hill Funicular). The exciting attraction here is the famous revolving restaurant on top of the hill (1400 meters)-which was named Otto after the well-known explorer Otto Mailing. You access the restaurant by a funicular. The view of the Nahuel Huapi Lake and Huemul Island is awesome!
Km 8. "Playa Bonita" (Pretty Beach). From the shore, you can see Huemul Island, declared a historical, ecological and touristic reserve in 1994. The island, famous for the nuclear fusion laboratories built in the 50's, can be reached daily by boats from San Carlos (Saint Charles) Port.
Km 17. "Cerro Campanario" (Bell Tower Hill) When visitors get to the top of the hill (1050 meters) they can enjoy the view over the Nahuel Huapi's Campanario branch.
km20 "Ahumadero Familia Weiss" The Weiss Family Smokehouse). This family produces traditional products: wild boar, deer and smoked trout
Km 20. "Desvío Península San Pedro" (Saint Peter Peninsula Detour) Nahuel Huapi's Campanario branch is enclosed by this peninsula, which has thick forests and two interesting points: the mirador over the lake and Puerto Bueno (Good Port), at the end of the road.
Km 25 "Capilla de San Eduardo" (Saint Edward's Chapel) Built on grounds of National Parks in the early 40's with donations from Juana G. Devoto, it shows a typically European architecture.
Km 26. "Desvío Hotel Llao Llao" (The Llao Llao Hotel Detour) This traditional hotel was inaugurated in 1938 but in 1993 was renovated and reopened to the public. Designed by Architect Alejandro Bustillo, it has a Canadian style that combines Norman tiles, logs and stone. Located between the Nahuel Huapi and Moreno Lakes, it enjoys a breathtaking view of southern scenery.
Km 26. "Puerto Pañuelo" (Handkerchief Port) Catamaran trips on the Nahuel Huapi Lake leave Puerto Pañuelo's Bay with different destinations: Victoria Island, Quetrihue Port ("Arrayanes" Forest), Blest Port (Frias Lake and crossing to Chile through Lagos).
Km 32. "Bahía López" (Lopez Bay) Over the Nahuel Huapi's Tristeza (Sadness) branch, the bay makes two magnificent miradores of the surrounding forests and hills. A small bridge goes over the Angostura creek, which joins the Nahuel Huapi and the Moreno Lakes.
Km 35. "Desvío Colonia Suiza" (Swiss Colony Detour) The first settlers of Swiss origin who came to Bariloche in the XIX century gave their name to this area. You can visit the handicrafts fair, have tea with homemade cakes and taste a typical meal of curanto, Chilean stew of meat and seafood barbecued on heated stones.
