I did not see any maps thread, so I have started one with the belief that puddin and Peach will get the episodes in order at some point. Since I do not know how many episodes precede Penang, I cannot reserve space for those before Penang at this time. Viña del Mar, Chile's 4th largegst city, is best known as a tourist and beach destination with multiple beaches including Reñaca, Las Salinas, Miramar and Casino. It is known for a large flower clock (Reloj de Flores) with its numbers made up of flowering plants, near Caleta Abarca beach and Miramar Hotel. The Valparaiso Sporting Club horse racing track is another major landmark. Jardín Botánico or Parque del Salitre is a large botanical garden on the outskirts of the city. A few buildings from the 1800s still remain after multiple earthquakes that have destroyed most of the old areas of the city. Most of the older buildings that remain are located along Avenida Libertad (Liberty Avenue), Quillota Street and Quinta Vergara, a large park in the middle of the city. The presidential summer residence, Castillo Presidencial is located on Cerro Castillo (Castle Hill). The city's gambling casino is the oldest in Chile and also the most visited and luxurious. The casino was designed with art deco style and is surrounded by well-tended gardens. Palacio Rioja, a magnificent mansion built by Fernando Rioja in 1907, located on Quillota Street, houses an environmental museum. The Fonck Museum, located in Cuatro Norte Street, has a large exhibition of pre-Columbian articles and a large moai (Easter Island statue made of volcanic rock) is also on display. Palacio Carrasco, built by Emilio Carrasco in 1912, now houses the Municipal Library and also is used for arts exhibitions. The building is also surrounded by nice gardens adorned with fine sculptures including a Rodin. Palacio Vergara, located in Quinta Vergara was built by Blanca Vergara (daughter of José Francisco) in 1906, currently houses the School of Fine Arts. Palacio Brunet (also known as "Castillo Yarur") was built in 1923 by Adolfo Brunet on Cerro Castillo, close to the presidential mansion. Currently it is owned by Carabineros de Chile (Chilean police) and is used as a reception center for illustrious visitors.

PUERTO VARAS, CHILE

Here are the primary things to see and do in this area:

 o Visit any of several National Parks
 o Class II to IV White Water Rafting
 o Horseback day trips and multi-day Horse Treks
 o Volcano ascents
 o Countless Fly Fishing rivers
 o Sea Kayaking
 o Boat trips to Argentina

Now, a couple of thoughts come to my mind. First is the possiblity of a throwback-type DETOUR, the white water rafting on the Petrohue River that happened in AR11 episode 3 with some major navigation issues for several teams. Second, the idea of boat trips to Argentina is interesting because we know that teams have to use some tranportation method to get to Bariloche yet we do not know how they did it.

I am ready to hypothesize that this is how teams got from Puerto Varas to Bariloche, assuming that several of the side trips along the way were ignored by World Race Productions in making the arrangements. This is a daily 2-day tour offered in Puerto Varas and in reverse from Bariloche, but I believe it was compressed into one day for AR16 teams.

The Lake District of Chile stretches from Temuco south to Puerto Montt and from the Pacific east to the Andes. Where the Lake District ends, Patagonia begins.  The "Lake District Crossing" is one of South America's most popular surface crossings via a series of motorlaunches and motorcoaches through spectacular scenery - snow-capped mountian peaks, gloriously green forests and azul blue lake.

The Andean Lake Crossing or Cruce de Lagos
is an adventure from Puerto Varas to Bariloche or viceversa. This is an amazing adventure that givesyou the option of discovering different lakes during the navigation that takes 2 days: from Llanquihue Lake, to Todos los Santos Lake, then Frias Lake and finally Nahuel Huapi Lake.
    * Day 1 Puerto Varas - Peulla
      Departure from Puerto Varas to Petrohué, bordering Llanquihue Lake, with amazing views of Osorno and Calbuco Volcanoes. Visit to Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park, and its Petrohué Falls. Continue sailing through Todos Los Santos Lake enjoying an even more spectular view of Osorno volcano, Puntiagudo and Tronador hills. Arrival at Peulla, ecological town, paradise of nature lovers.

    * Day 2 Peulla - Bariloche
      Departure to Puerto Frias (the Chilean Customs Point). Cross the Andes Mountain and continue down the winding road that leads to Puerto Frias. Cruise on Lake Frias to Puerto Alegre. Arrival at Puerto Blest. Visit to Cántaros Falls.  Departure from Puerto Blest on the last cruise to Puerto Pañuelo. Upon arrival, board the bus that will take you on the last stretch to Bariloche, Argentina, a city that beckons tourist all-year round with its wide variety of ski resorts, shops, hotels,restaurants and entertaining nightlife.

Alternatively, the timetable for this crossing in one day Puerto Varas to Bariloche is as follows:

Puella arr. 1230 dep. 1400 (Note: a long lunch break is not consistent with the way Amazing Races are set up, so there would probably be no more than 30 mintues is Puella)

On the south coast of the Nahuel Huapi Lake, just a two hour flight from Buenos Aires, is the beautiful San Carlos de Bariloche (AAka Bariloche) with views of soaring mountains, clear lakes, and beautiful pine woods, all in the heartland of the nearby Nahuel Huapi National Park and charming Swiss chalet style stone and wooden architecture, international ski slopes, and renowned chocolate shops.

Bariloche is in close proximity to other nearby attractions to the renowned Circuito Chico, and even day trips to the enchanting Isla Victoria, opportunities are plentiful for the dream sight-seeing vacation. Bariloche's guided river rafting, paragliding, kayaking, golfing, are all within the city or in close proximity. For intense thrill-seekers, mountaineering excursions are a popular attraction featuring repelling, climbing or biking.

Circuito Chico he "Circuito Chico" is a 62-km round trip around Bariloche. You start at the Civic Center and, west along Bustillos Ave., you go around the Lago Nahuel Huapi (Nahuel Huapi lake) till the Lago Moreno (Moreno Lake).

Km 1. "Parque Ecoturístico Cerro Viejo" (Old Hill Ecological-Touristic Park) It was founded in 1998 and has lots of attractions: a 900-meter high chair lift, sculptures carved in wood, a mountaineering museum, a local flora track, a little forest of "arrayanes" and a huge slide.

Km 4. Candles and Handmade Ceramics - regional stores full of souvenirs: candles of different shapes and colors and hand-painted ceramic objects.

Km 5. "Teleférico Cerro Otto" (Otto Hill Funicular). The exciting attraction here is the famous revolving restaurant on top of the hill (1400 meters)-which was named Otto after the well-known explorer Otto Mailing. You access the restaurant by a funicular. The view of the Nahuel Huapi Lake and Huemul Island is awesome!

Km 8. "Playa Bonita" (Pretty Beach). From the shore, you can see Huemul Island, declared a historical, ecological and touristic reserve in 1994. The island, famous for the nuclear fusion laboratories built in the 50's, can be reached daily by boats from San Carlos (Saint Charles) Port.

Km 17. "Cerro Campanario" (Bell Tower Hill) When visitors get to the top of the hill (1050 meters) they can enjoy the view over the Nahuel Huapi's Campanario branch.

km20 "Ahumadero Familia Weiss" The Weiss Family Smokehouse). This family produces traditional products: wild boar, deer and smoked trout

Km 20. "Desvío Península San Pedro" (Saint Peter Peninsula Detour) Nahuel Huapi's Campanario branch is enclosed by this peninsula, which has thick forests and two interesting points: the mirador over the lake and Puerto Bueno (Good Port), at the end of the road.

Km 25 "Capilla de San Eduardo" (Saint Edward's Chapel) Built on grounds of National Parks in the early 40's with donations from Juana G. Devoto, it shows a typically European architecture.

Km 26. "Desvío Hotel Llao Llao" (The Llao Llao Hotel Detour) This traditional hotel was inaugurated in 1938 but in 1993 was renovated and reopened to the public. Designed by Architect Alejandro Bustillo, it has a Canadian style that combines Norman tiles, logs and stone. Located between the Nahuel Huapi and Moreno Lakes, it enjoys a breathtaking view of southern scenery.

Km 26. "Puerto Pañuelo" (Handkerchief Port) Catamaran trips on the Nahuel Huapi Lake leave Puerto Pañuelo's Bay with different destinations: Victoria Island, Quetrihue Port ("Arrayanes" Forest), Blest Port (Frias Lake and crossing to Chile through Lagos).

Km 32. "Bahía López" (Lopez Bay) Over the Nahuel Huapi's Tristeza (Sadness) branch, the bay makes two magnificent miradores of the surrounding forests and hills. A small bridge goes over the Angostura creek, which joins the Nahuel Huapi and the Moreno Lakes.

Km 35. "Desvío Colonia Suiza" (Swiss Colony Detour) The first settlers of Swiss origin who came to Bariloche in the XIX century gave their name to this area. You can visit the handicrafts fair, have tea with homemade cakes and taste a typical meal of curanto, Chilean stew of meat and seafood barbecued on heated stones.

ASUNCION
Asuncion is a city of 1.5 million population and capital city of Paraguay. It is home to the Godoi Museum and the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (which contains paintings and sculpture by Paraguayan and other South American artists, plus many historical documents), the Church of La Encarnación and the Metropolitan Cathedral, and the National Pantheon of the Heroes, where many of the nation's heroes are entombed. Other landmarks include the Palacio de los López and the old Senate building (a modern building opened to house Congress in 2003). Calle Palma is the main street downtown where several historical buildings, plazas, shops, restaurants and cafes are located. The "Manzana de la Rivera", located in front of the Presidential Palace, is a series of old traditional homes that have been restored and serve as a museum showcasing the architectural evolution of the city.

# Casa Viola was renovated, courtesy of the Spanish government, to mark the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America. It is a prime example of early colonial architecture.
# Casa de la Independencia, where revolutionaries met in secret to plan their battle for independence, houses relics from the 1811 revolution.
# Plaza de la Independencia, where you'll see the Palacio Legislativo and the Catedral Metropolitana. The cathedral dates from 1687 and is notable for the very large gilded altar and religious art.
# Casa de los Diputados, once a military college and museum, and Palacio de Gobierno, which is not open to visitors, but you can admire the neoclassical facade.
Beyond the city center:
# The Parque de Museo de Historia Natural is being revitalized and contains a small zoo, golf course, and camping area. The museum has exhibits of wildlife.
# The Gran Hotel del Paraguay was once the home of a mistress of Solano López, dictator between 1862-1870. The oldest hotel in Asunción, it has beautiful tropical gardens and a fine collection of furnishings and art.

PENANG

The state of PENANG is geographically divided into two sections:

    * Penang Island: an island of 293 square kilometres located in the Straits of Malacca with an estimated population of 745,000 and 24 municipalities; and

    * Province Wellesley (also known as Seberang Perai in Malay): a narrow hinterland of 753 square kilometres on the peninsula across a narrow channel whose smallest width is 4 km (2.5 miles). It is bordered by Kedah in the north (demarcated by the Muda River) and east, and Perak in the south and has an estimated population of 833,000 in 20 municipalities.

The body of water between Penang Island and Province Wellesley is the North Channel to the north of Georgetown and the South Channel to the south of George Town. Penang Island is irregularly shaped, with a granitic, hilly and mostly forested interior, the highest point being Western Hill (part of Penang Hill) at 830 metres above sea level. The coastal plains are narrow; in the northeast they forms a triangular promontory where state capital George Town is located. The topography of Province Wellesley is mostly flat. Butterworth, the main town in Province Wellesley, lies along the Perai River estuary and faces George Town at a distance of 3 km (2 miles) across the channel to the east.

Take a trishaw ride or walking tour of the George Town Unesco World Heritage Site!
The trishaw is a cute little peddle-power vehicle that has been around since the days of yore. Decorated with plastic flowers and blinking lights, these are now mainly “tourist mobiles” and are great for going around George Town’s narrow inner city streets.

Penang street food encompasses Chinese, Malay and Indian “fast food”! Eating by the roadside is an experience as you watch locals of all races indulge in their favourite past time – food!

BATU FERRINGHI BEACH
Laze by the scenic Batu Ferringhi beach or take a leisurely stroll along Gurney Drive
With its sandy shores and vast open sea, Batu Ferringhi offers an amazing respite from the hustle and bustle of town. A walk along Gurney Drive invigorates all senses as it boasts of some of Penang’s best street food, shopping mall, and of course, a beautiful promenade!

Take a cable car ride up Penang Hill for the breathtaking view and go on a ferry ride
The Penang Hill funicular train ride in Air Itam is one of the most poplar tourist attractions. The short 30-minute train ride is not-to-be-missed. The famous yellow ferries at Weld Quay were the main mode of transportation between the island and mainland before the Penang Bridge was constructed. The 15-minute ride affords passengers a view of two important heritage buildings – Wisma Yeap Chor Ee and Wisma Kastam, as you head towards the island. Once a thriving maritime port, Weld Quay now houses a bustling bus terminal, ports, clan jetty settlements and restaurants.  The Botanic Gardens has myriad of plants and century-old trees.

SHANGHAI

Shanghai, a metro area of over 18 million people, is split in two by the Huangpu River . On the west bank is Puxi, the older city center, while the newer sky-rise development on the east side is called Pudong, the skyscraper-laden financial and commercial district on the east bank of the river with museums and shopping throughout.

Areas within Puxi:
    * The Bund  - The colonial riverside of old (and reborn) Shanghai. The Bund has dozens of historical buildings lining the Huangpu River, which once housed numerous banks and trading houses from Britain, France, the U.S., Russia, Germany and other countries. A building boom at the end of 19th century and beginning of 20th century led to the Bund becoming a major financial hub of East Asia.
    * French Concession Area - Comprises Luwan District and Xuhui District which is generally bound by Shanxi Rd to the east, Jian Guo Rd to the south, Huashan Rd to the west and Chang Le Rd to the north. This leafy district once known as the "Paris of the East", includes the refurbished shikumen houses of Xintiandi and Shanghai Stadium. The blending of architecture styles, bustling street life, and wealth of international Shanghai fusion culture define these districts.
    * Jing'an District - Commercial area on Nanjing Road West, most upscale shopping malls in the city. Nanjing Road, one of China's most famous shopping streets, passes Jing'an Temple leading to People's Park Renmín Gōngyuán) and The Bund.
    * Old City
    * Huangpu excluding the Old City
    * Putuo
    * Zhabei  
    * Hongkou - Home for famed writer Lu Xun, now including a Memorial Park and a museum, as well as a soccer stadium. Once home to Shanghai's substantial Jewish population in the first half of the 20th century.

I have a hunch that the hang- or para-gliding is in the vicinity of Bariloche. The trans-Andean crossing will come through Puerto Alegre and on to Puerto Panuelo. From there here are some possibilities for a detour between those 2 points:

VICTORIA ISLAND
With a surface of 3,700 hectares and 20 kilometers length, this island is the largest in the lake. You get here from Puerto San Carlos or Puerto Pañuelo, at Llao Llao. From San Carlos you need to travel 11 kilometers (30 minutes by boat), and from Puerto Pañuelo, at km 225 in Ezequiel Bustillo avenue, it takes 1 hour 40 minutes.

In both cases you get to Puerto Anchorena at Isla Victoria. You can also take the chairlift that will take you to the top of Bella Vista hill, at 900 meters, with a series of spectacular natural vantage points.

SEVEN LAKES IN MANSO BASIN of NAHUEL HUAPI NATIONAL PARK
The trip to San Martín along a wooded road crosses rivers and streams and skirts several lakes (Nahuel Huapi, Correntoso, Espejo, Escondido, Villarino, Falkner and Machónico) on whose shores there are beaches and several panoramic lookout points.

Going round Lacar lake you arrive at San Martín de los Andes . On your return through Cordoba Pass the landscape is different. After going round Meliquina lake, the wood disappears and is replaced by strange but beautiful rocky formations. When you arrive at Confluencia, the winding blue Limay river adds its touch to a magical view of the Valle Encantado and the "Anfiteatro" (Amphitheater). To to Bariloche, you just have to follow the river bank up to its starting point at Nahuel Huapi lake.

MANSO RIVER - BARILOCHE
It is fed by the Manso, Castaño, Overo and Los Alerces glaciers, all of them located on the eastern slope of Tronador hill. For a total of 100 kilometers, this impressive river flows through the Nahuel Huapi, Correntoso, Espejo, Escondido, Villarino, Falkner and Machónico lakes which form the Manso basin, one of the five basins protected by the Nahuel Huapi National Park.


CERRO CAMPANARIO - BARILOCHE
The trip starts at Bustillo avenue, skirting Nahuel Huapi lake. At km 8 you will find Playa Bonita and after that there is a road known as "Cruce Catedral" leading to "Virgen de las Nieves", Cerro Catedral and Gutierrez lake.

Remaining on National Route Nº237, and skirting Nahuel Huapi lake, you go past Puerto Moreno, Playa Serena, the Jockey Club racetrack and at km 17, you get to the Cerro Campanario chairlift. You can go to the top of the hill, at 1,050 meters altitude.

The beautiful tearoom at the top offers a chance to admire one of the most fascinating and exciting views in the region: Nahuel Huapi and Perito Moreno lakes, El Trebol lagoon, San Pedro and Llao Llao peninsulas, Isla Victoria, Otto, López, Goye, Catedral and Capilla mounts and the wonderful mountain range surrounding San Carlos de Bariloche.

The chairlift runs up to around 7:30 pm in summer time.

Cerro Campanario Chairlift
The new chairlift manufactured by Doppelmayer is high-tech. It is safer than previous models and has a variable speed. The ascent trip takes 7 minutes at a speed of 1.5 meters per second. With its 8 towers and 40 chairs (maximum capacity 60 chairs), it is 640 meters long and can transport up to 450 people an hour. The top station is at 1,050 meters and the bottom station at 770 meters.
        

My concept is that the task could be to take off from one of the cerros (Otto, Lopez, Goye, Catedral, Capilla or Campanario) and to land in one of the lakes mentioned above. The key as to which cerro is probably transportation. Cerro Campanario has its chairlift. Cerro Otto has a teleferico from 800 to 1.405 meters above sea level, covering a distance of 2.100 meters at approximately 3 m/second. Cerro Catedral has a cable car/chairlift with a vertical gain of 1000 meters. Cerros Lopez, goye and Capilla do not appear to have any transportation system up to the peak except on foot, which would make it very difficult for a hang- or para-glider to be tranported up.

I have taken a look to develop categories of What to See and Do in Mahe Island in particular. Here are the  biggest categories:

SHANGHAI WHAT TO SEE AND DO

I was shocked to read that the first place the Shanghai tourism people want to send visitors is YuYuan Gardens. I have a bad taste in my mouth from AR5's very brief visit there.
The next two places are visiting the Bund (original mansions along the Huangpu River where the foreigners used to live and work) and the Shanghai Museum (Chinese bronzes, ceramics, painting, calligraphy, arts and crafts).
Shanghai would make a good place for an eating challenge involving seafood or some exotic Chinese culinary delights.

Shanghai is a metropolitan area of over 20 million people (17 million in the city itself, 5th to 10th largest metropolitan area in the world) depending on which source is used). There are lots of other less important things to see and do, including exploring the pockets of colonial architecture in the old French Concession, sampling the exploding restaurant and nightlife scene, or wandering the shopping streets.

Shanghai was visited by AR6, which went to YuYuan Gardens, to a tall building for a window washing at 40 stories high ROADBLOCK) and the very interesting DETOUR Bricks or Ice, both emphasizing serious physical labor.

GE does an adequate job with Valpo and Santiago; it does OK with PV, but the imagery is a little dated. Here's an outline map of PV; comparing it to this pano of Lourdes Grotto (the site has a lot of good PV panos), I'd guess the photog who took the pitstop pictures was standing near Pim's Pub.
The resolution isn't as good for Angostura. Here's a map of downtown and the surrounding neighborhoods. (Who knows, maybe they just picked up their cars there)
If you need maps with an address search, either Yellow (click Region V for Valpo and Region X for PV) or MapCity will do.

Although the cluebox was at the viewpoint (mirador) on the island, the teams took off in the boats to do the task (at least, that's the way it was edited). Not many visual clues due to the weather.

Perhaps you had forgotten it because that wasn't the precise Playa Petrohue pit stop. It was at Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park (Playa Petrohué) on the beach( cabanas fits but not the hotel) which is nearby.
