Yep, that's Karnak at Luxor! First pic below shows the Pit Stop on "Crocodile Island," now marketed as "King's Island." It's a private island owned by a hotel but if you pretend to be a guest you can sneak in. (Also, the scarabs that they had to dig for in the sand are common souvenirs sold to tourists, much like the Eiffel Towers teams got in Zambia.)

The second pic is hard to recognise because the task there took place at night, but it came right before this (second pic)...

The second pic in your initial post is from the japanese Leg on TAR9, from the Detour choice "Maiden"; and the pic in your second post is the "Capsule Land Hotel" in Tokyo.

One more from TAR7:  the Station of the Bartolomé Mitre Railway on Retiro, Buenos Aires; where teams had to board the train to Tigre, and later perform the Detours on that leg.

The station is right in front of the Fuerza Aérea Square and the English Clock Tower.

I guess this is the place to post this pics, although they are from TARLA.  The "Puente de la Mujer", the PS of the Leg 2 (Buenos Aires) of TARLA 3.

Plaza Intendente Alvear, the real location of the PitStop:

The PitStop:

And the Nuestra Señora del Pilar church, from the PS  (sorry about the tiny piece of finger :( ):

And the Alvear statue, the background for the confessionals:

About a year ago we made a trip to Vietnam. By pure coincidence it turned out that our hotel in Ho Chi Minh city was located just across the street from where the cyclo task in TAR 3 took place. I am sure most of you remember it.

The clue said to go to "2A Ton Duc Thang Street" and search for your next clue. The first team, Terry & Ian, found the clue box here without problem. They then had to drive a cyclo along a marked path to a nearby ferry terminal, take the ferry across the river and the follow the marked path to the Pit Stop. Team #2 to arrive was the wonder twins, but they had trouble locating the clue box. Eventually they followed the flags across the river. Meanwhile the last team, Flo & Zach, found the cyclos. They then met team #3 and told them where to go. In the end the wonder twins got eliminated. And those of you who followed and remember the season know what a delightful irony it was that it effectively was Flo who got the wonder twins eliminated by helping Ken & Gerard.

Anyway the area had changed quite a bit in the 9 years since the episode was filmed. I think I managed to locate where the cluebox sat. The episode capture is kind of fuzzy below, but there was a tower with some upwards facing spikes on it. I found a similar tower down the street. The left picture below was taken from our hotel room.

And pointing the camera in the other direction we see the ferry terminal:

The distance between the clue box and the ferry terminal is only a couple of hundred meters.

Vietnam has changed a lot! When I went two years after filming the Pit Stop was a derelict wreck...

Can anyone guess where this one is?

Have we already had a thread about visiting the places shown in TAR?
« Reply #122 on: February 27, 2013, 08:38:17 AM »
I know that in Baidu forum and Weibo.com in China some fans have created such kind of threads. In those threads people discuss their experiences of visiting the places that were once shown in TAR. Some people had visited some of those places before they were shown in TAR, while some other fans learnt those places in TAR and then visited them. It's said that some fanatic fans even finished the mission of traveling through several legs in one specific season...  :o

Have we already had a thread talking about this? Hence we could know what those places look like in fans' own views aside from what those places were shown on the show and whether they're really worth visiting. :)

Maybe I can start it with Cui Ping Jiu Jia shown in leg1 (Shanghai) in TAR21 where contestants had hasma (the fatty tissue found near frog fallopian tubes). After this episode was aired many fans in Baidu forum (especially those from Shanghai) were surprised at the crew choosing this place for the challenge because this restaurant received bad reception online. We have a website where people can rate restaurants, and this restaurant received many 0 points... People blamed this restaurant for its low speed in serving the meals, bad serving attitude, and poor dishes. :)

This is what it was like when S21 was aired. Don't know the circumstances now...

ETA: Latest news--Cui Ping Jiu Jia has been closed. The boss owed a lot of money and hence the court decided to confiscate it. :groan:
