Dancing with the Stars - 9
« on: August 17, 2009, 11:28:54 AM »
Former Republican Majority Leader Tom DeLay will join 15 celebrities from the worlds of entertainment and sports in kicking up their heels on the new season of "Dancing With the Stars.

Other hopefuls include entertainer Donny Osmond; singers Mya, Macy Gray and Aaron Carter; actors Melissa Joan Hart, Debi Mazar and Ashley Hamilton (son of George); models Joanna Krupa and Kathy Ireland; reality stars Kelly Osbourne and Mark Dacascos ("the Chairman" on Food Network's "Iron Chef America"); mixed martial artist Chuck Liddell; professional snowboarder Louie Vito; Olympic swimmer Natalie Coughlin; former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Michael Irvin and the 62-year-old former congressman from Texas.

The contestants were announced on Monday's "Good Morning America" by "Dancing" host Tom Bergeron.

He also unveiled a new competitive twist.

"In the middle of our season, over three weeks, we're going to have double eliminations," said Bergeron. "We'll lose about half of our cast within that period. It will be a ballroom bloodbath."

Samantha Harris returns as co-host, with the panel of judges including ballroom judge Len Goodman and dancer-choreographers Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba.

The ninth season of the hit ABC show premieres Sept. 21.

Dancing with the Stars

New Dancing Stars Revealed!
August 17, 2009

It’s going to be a crowded ballroom for Dancing with the Stars’ ninth season. Sixteen celebrities — including Donny Osmond, Melissa Joan Hart and Aaron Carter — have signed on to do the cha cha and the paso doble on the ABC show, which premieres Monday, Sept. 21.

“When we increase the cast we find it makes the competition more interesting,” DWTS executive producer Conrad Green tells PEOPLE. “It was about trying to make it as big as possible and try to get that sense of fun and excitement and real character come through on the show.”

The sweet 16 lineup, which was announced live on Good Morning America Monday, also includes familiar faces like former Dallas Cowboy Michael Irvin, reality star Kelly Osbourne and supermodel-turned-billionaire businesswoman Kathy Ireland. Lesser-known celebrities, like snowboarder Louie Vito, Iron Chef’s Mark Dacascos and model Joanna Krupa join the cast as well. But by far the most eyebrow-raising contestant is former House of Representatives Majority Leader Tom DeLay.

“He’s a fairly divisive figure in as much as Democrats will probably be hoping he fails and Republicans will probably be melting down the phones to keep him in,” Green admits. “I love that kind of level of engagement.”

Adds Green: “Tom loves dancing. He dances with his wife. He watches Dancing with the Stars religiously. For him it was a no brainer, but for us it was an absolute shock.”

Professional dancer/celebrity pairings will be announced on August 24, Green says, “because of geography, people will be meeting their partners for the first time at various times throughout the week.”

The complete cast for Dancing Season Nine

Mya, singer
Melissa Joan Hart, actress
Michael Irvin, former Dallas Cowboy
Ashley Hamilton, actor, comedian, singer-songwriter
Aaron Carter, singer
Kathy Ireland, former supermodel-turned-businesswoman
Debi Mazar, actress
Natalie Coughlin, U.S. Olympic swimmer
Louie Vito, snowboarder
Chuck Liddell, ultimate fighting champ
Donny Osmond, singer
Tom DeLay, former Republican congressman
Macy Gray, singer
Joanna Krupa, model and actress
Mark Dacascos, Iron Chef personality
Kelly Osbourne, reality star

It may be a bit early, but I think the superathletes have an edge (look at the results for the past 6 seasons if you don't believe me; 5 of them were won by superathletes). This means that Michael Irwin or Chuck Liddell have a chance, but I think the best chance to win Dacning with the Stars 9 goes to swimmer Natalie Coughlin.

Very true that the "super athletes" do seem to have more of an edge!  It should be an interesting season....heck I have no clue who a few of these "Stars" are - having to look them up.

Unlike Seasons 6 & 8, I don't have a favorite going in at the moment.  In Season 6, Kristi Yamaguchi was my favorite; in Season 8, it was Shawn Johnson.  Here -- I'll have to wait until I see them dance before I decide.

The superathletes certainly have an edge, especially the football player and the Olympic athlete.  Almost all the football players made it to the finals in their seasons and one -- Emmitt Smith -- won.  And almost all of the Olympic champions made it to the finals in their seasons -- maybe Misty May Treanor would've made it in her season but she blew her Achilles tendon, sad to say -- and of those that made it to the finals, they won!  If Natalie's an Olympic champion, she may well win if she gets to the finals.

There's only a few celebrities that I don't know this year. That's good. Can't wait to see who they're paired with this season.

It's going to be a chaotic season with all of the double eliminations and stuff.
I thought that when we fought, I was to blame
Now I know you play a different game
I've seen you dance with danger; still wanting more

Belle Book,
You may have a rude awakening when DWTS9 starts. Tom Delay is an avid dancer. Tom can dance the two-step, polka, waltz, country swing and disco. None of those except the waltz are used on DWTS, but it indicates that he likes to dance and is willing to learn whatever dances he does not already know and to perfect the ones he does know under the expert tutelage of a 2-time DTWS champion. You may have to eat your words.

Well, I didn't know that.  Thanks for letting me know.  Still, I don't think Tom will be too popular and that might end his dancing days sooner than maybe he should.

more confirmed pairings....

Joanna Krupa and Derek Hough

Kelly Osbourne and Louis von Amstel

Mark Dacascos and Lacey Schwimmer

still waitiing on Macy Gray, Kathy Ireland, Melissa Joan Hart, Louie Vito and Michael irvin.

my guess for those are...

Mark Ballas will get Macy

Jonathan Roberts will get Kathy

Tony Dovolani will get Melissa Joan

Chelsie Hightower will get Louie

And the new pro dancer that America voted on season 8, Anna (forget her last name) will get Michael.

Watch out for Mark Dacascos. I have only seen him in the benign role of "The Chairman" (lucky guy, he gets to introduce the secret ingredient and then act as a judge in the final eating and voting) in IronChef America. He is a martial arts enthusiast and kung fu expert in addition to his acting skills. I expect that he will be very light on his feet.

Will, according to the DWTS Wikipedia article, you're right with your predictions on the partners of Louie and Michael.

For the many Tom DeLay fans out there, here is some additional information from TV Watch magazine article "Tom DeLay Giddy about Dancing Gig": "To be paid to learn how to ballroom dance is the ultimate. I’m giddy about it all.” “I’ve been dancing all my life” (and he does not mean politician tap-dancing).  “I was the lead dancer in school [productions].” You can read the article at http://tvwatch.people.com/category/dancing-with-the-stars/
My regional newspaper even devoted half its editorial space to Tom DeLay this morning, although little of it pertained to his ballroom dancing. They were more interested in his political tap-dancing.

Rest of the pairs have been revealed per Wikipedia:

Macy has Johnathan Roberts. Melissa has Mark Ballas. Kathy has Tony Dovolani.

I read who was left and thought that the Kathy/Tony pairing would happen. It was a hunch.

Here are some of the dances:

Donny Osmond-foxtrot
Joanna Krupa-cha cha
Aaron Carter-cha cha
Melissa Joan Hart-waltz
Michael Irvin-waltz
Ashley Hamilton-cha cha
Kathy Ireland-most likely a waltz (she said on Twitter she was dancing backwards in a gown and high heels and referenced Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers)
