Neobie,

Let's focus on your suggestion of what happens after the plane lands in Amman. It is less than 2 hours from Amman to the Allenby/KingHussein Bridge into Jerusalem and from there it is 28 miles closer from Jerusalem to Massada as it is from Ben Gurion Airport to Massada. So tell me why they would incur 3 additional hours by waiting around for the flight to Tel Aviv, which is notorius as a place where teams would have been spotted on arrival, but maybe not on departure. It is not logical for them to have flown to Tel Aviv although it is eminently logical for them to have flown from Tel Aviv to Amsterdam or Bremen.

Let me remind all of my primary hypothesis, which will be repeated from multiple posts:

#1
Incoming Dubai to Amman choice of 2 flights landing 20 minutes apart:
 DBX AMM  EK901 0725 0920 or RJ613 0730 0940

Tel Aviv to Frankfurt: TLV FRA LH6871645 2000
connecting to            FRA BRE LH350 2125 2220

An alternative is Tel Aviv to Amsterdam TLV AMS LY339 1705 2110

#2
If you relax that(the assumption that teams must arrive Groningen by evening of July 29 a bit, I have a better flight than the middle of the night:

TLV AMS KL462   0505 0905
TLV AMS LY337   0600 1005

There is also a nonstop from TLV BRU SN7000 0700 0805. I think your SN3292 TLV BRU 0100 0500 is a better option because it allows for connection in Brussels to Bremen on Olt-ostfriesische Lufft 161 0810 0930. I have never heard of this airline and it has a 0% on-time record for that flight, but it is listed with a reputable source.

#3
I have some new information which relates to the possibilities. There are 3 ways to get from Dubai to either Amman or Tel Aviv on the evening of Tuesday July 28.

The best by far is nonstop RJ619 DXB AMM 2110 2320

Later arriving in Amman is GF567 DXB BAH 1820 1905 connecting Bahrain to GF5809 BAH AMM 2105 2345

Earlier but using a more circuitous route to Tel Aviv is EK131 DXB DME 1740 2255 connecting Moscow Domodedovo to LY616 DME TLV 2355 0255+1. This gets in well after midnight, which might minimize the hazards of being sighted in Ben Gurion Airport.

These are all viable and quite different from your hypotheses.

Apskip, arriving AMS at 9-10AM would not give teams time to arrive in Groningen when we know they did.

Having flown into Schipol every three months for a number of years, I think I can say that it would be nearly impossible to get from the gate through the VERY tight security to the car rentals in under 45 minutes, and that would be very very tight right there.

It was a Sunday AM, at that time the normal heading north out of Schipol traffic would have probably been reasonable, unlike on a weekday, where it could easily take an extra hour to get out of AMS.

Looks as though  approx 2 hours driving time to get there per Mapquest:
http://europe.mapquest.com/directions/europe.adp?go=1&do=nw&rmm=1&mo=ma&2si=gaz_nt&un=m&1rc=A5XAX&cl=EN&qq=IEaKSvfsRsqsKVIK9PYXF6r%252f8Oan9FHTPsKXSeKII3KnPmsGmWIZpMEGSjP2cPvf59BY22%252f6OIEYXQr6imiUVXoQDiKc4EBiGnGuku38Wt4hU4sfQlpbhG%252blMntMUvQc0cnsJ8jWJqh9w4P%252b8EySvW4mVzGbMMA0bewIc99X8%252bp5SskDOFO1ijsaTdBBQsTcDcfFoEYYmIpiYPRxwGlUcw%253d%253d&ct=EU&r=f&1si=gaz_nt&2rc=A5XAX&did=1251997705&rsres=1&1y=NL&1a=&1c=Amsterdam&1z=&panelbtn=1&2y=NL&2a=&2c=Groningen&2z=

So here is another alternative flight plan that would get them there earlier:

SN3292 dep TLV 8-30 0110 and arr Brussels BRU at 0502 (scheduled 500AM)

WA 1720 dep BRU 8-30 0615 and arr AMS 0706 (scheduled 0715) This is a KLM CityHopper flight

That would put them in Groningen at about 10 or perhaps slightly before.

Peach,

There are several things to consider:
1. July 30 was Thursday, not Sunday. This means an Amsterdam rush hour and extra time required for your route, as MapQuest does not allow for time of day in its calculations.

2. Let me repeat again:
I think your SN3292 TLV BRU 0100 0500 is a better option because it allows for connection in Brussels to Bremen on Olt-ostfriesische Lufft OL161 0810 0930.

This start with the  flight that you propose and goes to Bremen rather than Schiphol airport. Reasons to do that in spite of it arriving about one hour later are:
a. Bremen is about 40 miles closer to Groningen and a trip there should not take more than one hour. That puts teams in at 11am vs. your 10am
b. The marked cars driven by AR15 teams have German license plates. I beleive that it's possible but much less likely to get them at Schiphol than at Bremen
c. There is a much lower probability of being sighted going through Bremen than through Schiphol.

How important is that one hour?

Duh...what year was I looking at? :groan: Thursday it is.

I have driven that route multiple times and early AM traffic getting from Schipol north would be horrendous, not as bad as heading towards Den Hague, but bad. Just to get on the road north, after that they would be going against the traffic flow and could speed right up. IIRC, the speed limit would be 110km, ~66mph.

So I love your route, love the car explanation, but I think the timing is pretty crucial. I know Dutch saw production around 10, let me see if I can pin down the exact time he saw teams.

WRP has a thing about using Mercedes cars instead of rental cars.  The "borrowed or donated" cars come directly from Stuttgart headquarters of MB, so they would have German license plates.  We have seen them being used in other countries on previous TARs so it doesn't always mean that they are being used just in Germany.

Aah, the original timeline theory makes perfect sense now! One day for Phil, one day for racing, extended Pit Stops to make up the difference. Exceptions are only when the leg is short or on domestic legs (usually both).

^^ I agree with your chart Neobie and I'll guess they really stretch Leg 1 with the starting line task and all and then with Leg 1 ending with a superleg in Japan and continued through Japan but thats spec on my part.

What are the odds that the teams went to Abu Dhabi after Dubai?

Caelestor,
I personally believe the probability of that is realtively high, say in range of 50% probability. My reasoning is that there are few alternatives within the United Arab Emirates, which is necessary to keep the country count from increasing. Team could still leave from Dubai International Airport starting from Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi at 0.6 million is the next largest major city in the UAE after Dubai (population 1.1 million). Although Sharjah at 0.5 million and Al Ayn at 0.4 million are large enough, few Americans can relate to them (although I do have a cousin who lived in Abu Dhabi and visited all of the UAE as a result, but he is a total exception).

An interesting note from TAR 14: Phil was almost always a day ahead of the field, exceptions discussed below. We have the Tokyo leg ending on Monday 20 Jul, and the HCMC leg on Thursday 23 Jul. That gives us enough time for only one spare Phil day, ie...

Scenario 1
20 Jul: Tokyo finish. Phil goes to Leg 2.
21 Jul: Pit Stop release delayed. Spare Phil day to prepare Leg 2.
22 Jul: Leg 2 finish. Phil goes quickly to HCMC.
23 Jul: Phil films HCMC quickly, racing with the teams.

Scenario 2
20 Jul: Tokyo finish. Phil goes quickly to Leg 2.
21 Jul: Phil films Leg 2 quickly, racing with the teams. Phil then goes to HCMC.
22 Jul: Pit Stop release delayed. Spare Phil day to prepare HCMC.
23 Jul: HCMC finish.

We see the pattern continuing with the next two legs:
Phnom Penh, 24 Jul being Phil's free day, 25 Jul the actual racing day.
Dubai, 26 Jul being Phil's free day, 27 Jul the actual racing day.

The two exceptions in TAR 14 were Stechelberg to Vienna (~430 mil), where Phil took a production van; and Phuket to Bangkok (~420 mil), which are within the same country. Apart from Krasnoyarsk-Novosibirsk (~390 mil), which is a headache transport-wise, these are the two shortest legs in the season. I'm guessing Leg 2 is very accessible from either Tokyo or Ho Chi Minh City. And since Phil's in a bit of a rush trying to get to the Pit Stop in the morning for HCMC, I'm guessing he'd use the rest day there. Educated guess conclusion: Leg 2, Japan.

Comparisons:
Tokyo to Kyoto/Osaka (310 mil), Sapporo (490 mil), Seoul (780 mil)
HCMC to Da Nang (370 mil), Vientiane (560 mil), Hanoi (710 mil)

Made one too many assumptions!

Flights from Tokyo Narita Airport if on Sunday July 17 or one day later to HoChiMinh City were most likely VN951 1030 1430. They are also multiple flights late in the afternoon, but I estimate they are much less likely.

Teams don't arrive into Tokyo until Sun the 19th, I think we have been looking at Tues the 21st for a possible Pitstop release? Do those flights work then?

I'm actually thinking Vietnam I takes place on the 22 July, which means teams would be arriving probably in the morning or the night before.

The first direct flight on the 22nd from Narita to Ho Chi Minh City is Apskip's 1030-1430. A 2.30pm arrival would probably be too late for Phil to be greeting teams at the Reunification Palace the next day in the morning (for the second Vietnam leg, unless it's a TBC), so I suspect teams were released in the afternoon of the 21st for one of these flights...

NH 931 (1840-2300) or NW 1 (1845-2310)

... with an overnight equalizer to bunch everyone up. (First flight in from Hong Kong on the 22nd is at 1020,

I keep thinking that there is a lot more to Nam than we know...if they are in the Mekong Delta we may want every minute.

Why the 22nd Neobie?? I've been thinking VERY early on the 21st...what have I forgotten?

I am thinking along this schedule... Phil would want the 21st for his stand-ups, needing the extra day for Vietnam I (with all that flying) rather than for Vietnam II.

Since it looks like all 11 teams that arrived in Tokyo have bee seen in the promo for Vietnam there must be a NEL in Tokyo.

Also, I have somewhat arbitrarily placed the other
two NEL/TBC legs in the first legs of Dubai and Prague because those cities have two legs.

Let me know of any errors, omissions, or improvements to make!

Hold on there, which part are they lying about?

The planes land at 4pm, right? How did they get a "12.19pm" arrival time as mentioned by Phil?

I'm guessing the overnight stop did happen?

I noticed this right when Phil announced the leaving times for Leg 2. It just didn't make sense. Something had to happen that made Leg 1 longer than what was actually shown.

Agreed. Second last row, Finnair to Helsinki. AY 72 operates only on the 21st, it's known as AY 74 on the 20th and the 22nd.
This makes VN 951 the flight they took to Ho Chi Minh City, departing 10.30am and arriving at 2.30pm.
