Former Miami Dolphins cheerleaders Jaime Edmonson, 29, and Cara Rosenthal, 26, placed second in the race, the highest finish for a female team in any of the show’s 14 seasons.

Q: Second place is pretty amazing.
Jaime: We’re proud to be the highest finishing female team ever on “The Amazing Race.”
Q: Jaime, watching the episodes, did you feel you were a little hard on taxi drivers and other locals when you would yell at them to hurry?
Jaime: No, I don’t, because I am an extremely focused and intense person and I never lost sight that ultimately we are on a race. I have been to Asia five or six times and all over Europe and I never treated a taxi driver or a local trying to help me sight-see the way I did on the race, but I ultimately never lost focus. This is a race for $1 million, and there is a sense of urgency. And at the end of every single pit stop, when I went to pay my taxi and collect my belongings, I always apologized.”
Cara: I also wanted to say, as person who watched [the show] from my comfortable couch before leaving on this journey, I would watch former races and ask, “Why didn’t they do this? I would never have done that.” But the reality of this race is you are all cannons firing all the time. You are at full force at every given moment and it brings out of you your most aggressive and straightforward tone sometimes. So, for someone like Jaime who is typically already very straightforward, it is only going to be magnified and exaggerated with the stress of the race.
Jaime: I always acknowledged my behavior and in all my interviews I always said I get into a taxi and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde comes out. I can accept losing if I can compete. It’s really hard for me to accept losing if it is someone else’s hands, especially on that last leg when we spent 45 minutes getting gas and going to a surf shop instead of a surfboard fence. He essentially took it out of our hands, which is so much harder for me to accept.

Trials and Tribulations of the Runner-ups
by Julie Woo  May 11, 2009 02:23 PM EST

Jaime, are you done beating yourself up for that last Roadblock?

Jaime: I don’t think I’ll ever stop beating myself up for forgetting Jesus.

Cara: It was not Jaime’s fault.

Jaime: I’ll always wonder if we’d had better luck with the taxi not stopping for gas, not taking us to a surf shop—if we’d had all that time, about 45 minutes, if it’d be a different outcome.

Cara: For Jaime to do as well as she did, to make up as much of the 45 minutes as quickly as she did, there’s absolutely no reason she should be beating herself up. She did awesome.

That’s true. They didn’t show your progress and then all of a sudden, you were almost done.

Cara: I know. They were really focusing on poor Luke’s struggle and on Victor, and Jaime disappeared for a while. She was working hard obviously. She got all those boards all of a sudden when it looked like she was still working on the first one.

Why did you have such bad luck with cab drivers?

Jaime: There’s no reason. It’s just bad luck and that’s why you could see my frustration build over each leg of the Race, because it was literally from the very first leg. Every time we had to put our fate in someone else’s hands, it never went our way.

Why do you think an all-female team hasn’t won yet, after 14 seasons?

Cara: I think a lot of the Race is based on luck. I think one of the reasons we were successful was that we never saw ourselves as “just girls.” If previous teams did that, I think they hindered themselves. We gave it our all every time and were proud of ourselves after tasks that were particularly physical. So much is based on luck though.

When you had to carry the 145-pound pig, would you and Tammy have been able to get the pole on your shoulders like Margie did?

Jaime: We actually tried. They didn’t show it. But we knew the proper way to do that task was the way Margie and Luke did it. Victor and Tammy didn’t try to put it on their shoulders that I saw. But Cara and I made an attempt. It was so heavy it was impossible with our upper-body strength. We couldn’t get it past our waists.

Cara: And we crouched as low as we could in that sand trying to get that pig on our shoulders, but we couldn’t. Jaime is much stronger than I am and I have these abnormally small hands…I literally couldn’t get my hands around the pole. We got in the cab afterwards and Jaime was like, “Oh, my God, I forgot you had carnie hands.” My hands were so small, I was holding on with my fingertips which were oiled, so it kept slipping out of my fingers. It was very difficult.

What made you want to go on the show?

Cara: That was all Jaime. Jaime’s been a huge fan since the very first season. I woke up one morning to a text message at seven in the morning saying, “Hey, do you want to go on the Amazing Race with me? You’re the other most competitive girl I know. We could win.” To which I replied, “Sure. What is it?” I had never watched it, but I am so glad I came to mind as the person she’d want to run it with because it truly was an adventure of a lifetime.

Was that the bond you had with Luke, because I hear he is a very avid fan?

Cara: I think we had several bonds with Luke and Margie. They are really amazing. We have family and friends who are part of the deaf community or otherwise handicapped community, who truly are handicapped because they don’t have a mother like Margie who pushed her son to be as developed as he is, and I think that it’s amazing to be in the presence of someone who gave everything to her son. We have amazing mothers as well, so we could relate to that relationship. He did have an amazing catalog of memories though, from like, 20 seasons ago.

Are you reading blogs and commentary about yourselves?

Jaime: Even though I was an Amazing Race fan from the beginning, I actually did not realize that there were—I’m not so much a computer person. If I have downtime, I’m reading. Luke is actually the one who told us on the Race about these chat rooms and blogs. When we first came back, out of curiosity, we looked, but a lot of it was not so much Race-focused but personal attacks on not just us but everyone. It’s not something I can take seriously or to heart because it seems petty or catty.

Cara: I think I called Jaime after I read, “I can’t tell the difference between these two.” And someone said. “Cara’s the one with manlike features.” We had a good laugh but haven’t looked since.

Jaime, you’re obviously very competitive and type-A, but do you feel bad about being depicted as an “Ugly American” in foreign countries?

Jaime: I’d say that I am very intense and focused. I definitely have tunnel vision. During the Race, I never lost focus of the fact that we were running a race and my first priority was getting from point A to point B the fastest way we could do that. And I’m a very straightforward person. And I have a tone so when I say something, my tone sounds different than—

Cara: The way she thinks she’s saying something—like, “All I said was, ‘Do you speak English?’” Like if the answer is yes, maybe he could help us, but the way Jaime says it [it sounds harsh]. And she thinks she’s saying it in a really nice way and will ask “Cara, what did I do?”

Jaime: It’s just my tone. My whole life I’ve talked this way and I’ve heard that before. But it’s definitely not my intention. But I watch every show and yes, I think we’re made to be characters that they want us to be and after every leg, I always apologized to my taxi driver or someone who may be helping us.

Cara: Even in Romania, when she had yelled at him for driving on the sidewalk like you saw, she was so overwhelmed with how much she had really been screaming at the man, Jaime went hysterical—crying, hugging this man, apologizing. It’s the way it works—that you don’t see every second.

I’ve gotten a lot of messages about why I didn’t try to step in. But you don’t have to step in when someone realizes and apologizes. So, we would try with me communicating. Often times, when you saw Jaime, it wasn’t the first time she was asking where we were going. It was after we had been lost twice. I’ve traveled with Jaime for fun and let me assure you, she doesn’t yell at people when it’s on our time with no million-dollar prize hanging over our heads.

Jaime: I understood that that was my role. And I had a feeling going on the show that I would have to give up certain things to live out my dream and my dream was to go on The Amazing Race. I was OK with the tradeoff.

I appreciate that it took Jaime/Cara 45 minutes to get from McGregor Point off the middle of the west coast of Maui going almost directly north for about 10 miles to a point near Mile Marker 16 of the Hana Highway (that's what I believe they are saying without being pinned down by the questioners). However, I can guess that it took 30 minutes for Margie/Luke and tammy/Victor to do the same stretch more efficiently. I think their net disadvantage from the taxi driver was about 15 minutes vs. Tammy/Victor and more vs. Margie/Luke. That relatively small amount did prove to be critical.

I wish they would make it more suspenseful!  It seemed rediculous that Tammy and Victor automatically won.  I always love a little suspense!  I guess CBS has just decided that it is obvious who will win...

My Hawaiian friend is convinced that Producers manipulate the cabs, that they rig at least one designated cab to be low on gas and that Maui is so small and everyone knows everyone else so there is No way the drivers did not know where they were supposed to be going or where the filming was. And also brings up the point that Cara and Jamie's driver was foreign, not a local boy. Was he hired by production or no? .. we'll never know.

Amazing Race's Jaime and Cara's Taxicab Confessions: We're Nice Girls with Bad Luck
By JOYCE ENG
TV GUIDE
It was a taxi that was the deciding factor in Jaime Edmondson and Cara Rosenthal's advancement to the Amazing Race 14 finale, and it was also a taxi that was responsible for them coming up just short of the win. "So much of the game is luck and, without fail, we always had bad luck with the taxis, so it really didn't surprise us the final leg for a million dollars that we'd get the taxi driver that we did," Jaime tells TVGuide.com. The former NFL cheerleaders also weren't surprised with Jaime's "mean-girl" label. See what they have to say about their portrayal, as well as what it will take for an all-female team to finally win the Race.

TVGuide.com: So did you offend or kill some taxi driver in a previous life because that was just total bad luck you had.
Cara: [Laughs] I don't know! Maybe we were really bad taxicab drivers in our last lives because it was like that from the beginning [of the Race].
Jaime: We wasted about 45 minutes. Between getting gas, taking us to a surf, and he actually just pulled over to the side of the road and sat there. He had no idea where to go, so he called his dispatch, who, as you saw, refused to offer any assistance.

TVGuide.com: I didn't get that. Isn't her job to find your destination?
Jaime: That's what we were thinking. We were still paying customers and our fare was running up. I would believe the role of the taxi dispatch would be to help. Even if we weren't in a race, I would still expect that. ... It's really hard, even six months later, to have all the what-ifs. When Victor left the Roadblock, I had one surfboard left, so that shows how much time we made up when we were there, so what could we have done with an extra 45 minutes? I could totally accept defeat if it's my own doing — if I cannot compete and I've given 100 percent and I still don't win. But it's really difficult to accept it when you put your fate in someone else's hands.
Cara: That was incredible, and it was amazing how fast she did it. But barring some ridiculous circumstance — we were joking that we need Tammy and Victor to get a flat tire — we knew when they left that winning was over for us.

TVGuide.com: Jaime, you've built up a reputation as a mean girl, bordering on xenophobic.
Jaime: [Laughs] Apparently I'm going to be on Mean Girls Part 2! I was very, very frustrated by China because, for us, the problem with the taxis began on the very first leg, and you can't fault the other Racers for getting a smooth ride. What people don't see is that at the end of every single leg, without fail, I always apologized to our taxi drivers and I always showed remorse. I say things without the intention of being mean, but I say things very bluntly. "Hey, you speak English? You don't? OK, I'll find someone else."
Cara: Obviously, Jaime did not expect people in other countries to speak English, but we ask because you hope someone will say yes and help you. In China, when we were lost for five hours, someone who knew English helped us, but what we didn't know is that our Chinese isn't very good and there are so many different tones, so how appropriate that with Jaime's "horrible and nasty tone," we got directed to the wrong place.

TVGuide.com: They showed you apologizing on the finale. Were you annoyed that they didn't show any prior ones, or with how they chose to edit you?
Jaime: I knew that was my character for the show and I accept that. I know I have a tone and I know I have a very straightforward personality and it could rub people the wrong way because it happens in real life.
Cara: I think Jaime represents something inside so many of us where we all wished we had at times in our lives said what we really wanted to say. We're proud that we were ourselves from start to finish. I say really corny things and Jaime is going tell it to you like it is. If still you think we're mean, well, you don't know us. You weren't with us for 24 hours a day and Jaime is not a yelling lunatic for 24 hours a day!

TVGuide.com: Was that foot massage really that painful, Cara? Or do you have a low threshold for pain?
Cara: [Laughs] It was horrific! I don't like my feet touched. I've been training in ballet since I was 2 years old and I danced professionally, so I've had so many foot injuries. My very kind masseuse hit every single spot I had ever broken or injured, and for months after, Jaime can tell you, I had bruises all over the bottom of my feet. In my left foot, I actually had a pool of blood down the whole arch. I say my fiancé is very lucky because I'm the one girl who does not come home and say, "Honey, can you rub my feet? I've been on them all day."

TVGuide.com: What is it going to take for an all-female team to win?
Jaime: Luck. I don't think it has much to do with your skill level. There have been many skilled female teams on the Race, but it could come down to a bad taxi and that's luck.
Cara: Luck and maybe not running against such incredible teams in the final three. We can't give enough credit to Tammy and Victor, and Margie and Luke. They're very fierce competitors — Kisha and Jen too. They're all great and tough.

TVGuide.com: What are you up to now?
Jaime: Getting back to normal. It's been a very surreal experience. Now that we don't have a million dollars, we have to work! [Laughs] It's exciting to mark this one off my bucket list and see what the future holds.

TVGuide.com: Maybe they'll have another All-Stars season and you can come back and win.
Cara: [Laughs] Oh, we'd love that!

Ex-Dolphin cheerleaders talk about carrying pigs, eating scorpions on Amazing Race
By Tom Jicha | TV/Radio Writer
May 12, 2009
Jaime Edmondson and Cara Rosenthal didn't win The Amazing Race and the $1 million grand prize that goes with victory. But in finishing second, the former Dolphin cheerleaders from Boca Raton might have run the most amazing race in the history of the CBS reality series. It's not only that they had the best finish ever for an all-female team. They did it despite built-in advantages for their competitors.

Three stages took place in China, where the ultimate winners, Chinese-American brother and sister Victor and Tammy Jih, had a command of the language the others didn't. This almost proved to be the downfall of Jaime and Cara. They spent five hours wandering the streets of Beijing attempting to get directions from people who couldn't understand them. It put them into a hole they almost were unable to overcome.

"We each had 20-pound backpacks, we had on (theatrical) makeup that was burning our faces and we were in these bulky (opera) costumes," Cara said. "The bottom of our feet were bruised and bloody, but we kept going."

At times Jaime said to herself, "I can't walk another step." But rather than let down her teammate, she resolved, "If I have to, I'll crawl."

In the final stage, the three-remaining teams had to carry a 140-pound pig on a bamboo pole down the beach toward a luau pit. Tammy had a strong male partner in Victor. Luke Adams, who with his mother Marge finished third, is a strapping young guy. Luke figured the best way to carry out the task was to hoist the bar with the pig hanging from it on their shoulders.

Jaime and Cara also came to this conclusion but they didn't have the upper-body strength to get it that high, so they carried it at waist-level and had to stop every few steps to regrip the pole and regather their strength. It cost them quite a bit of time, perhaps the margin by which they fell short.

If that wasn't their undoing, a Hawaiian cab driver, who got lost, then had to stop for gas, was. "It was heart-breaking," Jaime said. "I could accept losing if it was because we couldn't compete but not because our fate was in the hands of a cab driver."

She expects she'll have nightmares the rest of her life, she said, wondering about the, "What ifs?"

It was almost as if the deck was stacked against the women at every turn. The one stage of the race in which they arrived at the pit stop first, they were told it wasn't really the finish line, that this phase would continue into the next episode. Nevertheless, they were rewarded off the air with a pair of jet skis.

CBS doesn't reveal the second prize but it is believed to be $100,000. Cara and Jaime, otherwise forthcoming and gregarious, went silent when the subject was broached. (A CBS publicist was monitoring the conversation.)

When not at a physical disadvantage, they were remarkable. During the round of four, when it looked like they were about to be eliminated, Cara aced one of their ickiest tasks. She devoured a buffet of scorpions, larva, grass hoppers and star fish.

"Cara was a rock star," Jaime said. "She ate them in seven minutes. They said it was the fastest anyone had done it. I was grossed out but amazed."

Since they got back and the show started airing, they get a rock star's reaction when people recognize them. "It's surreal that people know who we are..and care," Cara said.

Would they do it again?

The reply came in a chorus. "Absolutely."

I have a new concept for evaluating the performance of Jaime at the critical ROADBLOCK. When Jaime/Cara arrived there, Luke had completed 10 of the 11 slots correctly and Victor had completed 9 of 11. It is reported that there were more than 300 surfboards in the pile. Let's just use 300 for guesstimation purposes. Here's my logic:

1. I believe there were 3 sets of the valid surfboards, one for each team. Therefore with 19 of 33 valid ones already gone, Jaime was searching for 11 out of the 281 total and 267 invalid ones.  She would have a probability of 3.93% on each one, taking an average of 25.4 tries for the first one and each succeeding one, then the cumulative total is approximately:
1st 25
2nd 50
3rd 75
4th 100
5th 125
6th 150
7th 175
8th 200
9th 225
10th 250
so the 11th and last try Jaime would be looking for one out of about 31 surfboards (differs from 25 due to rounding on tries).
In other words, she will have basically discard all of the pile to find the 11 she needs.

The contrast with Luke is that Luke is looking for just 1 out of 2 valid ones in the 281 total. This should take him 140 tries on average. The contrast with Victor is that he is looking for just 2 our of 4 valid ones in the 281 total. The first one should take him an average of 140 tries and the second one 70 tries.

So we discover that Jaime has to make twice as many tries as Luke and 133% of the tries that Victor did to find all her correct correct surfboards.

That means she was twice as efficient as Luke (taking half the time per try) to finish at approximately the same time as him. It also means that Luke being frustrated indicated he had no clue on the udnerlying mathematics of this problem since it would take many tries to succeed and the only way to win was to keep trying as fast as he could.

It also means that Jaime, who appeared to be finished minutes after Victor, was an average of almost 1/3 more efficient than he was.

My conclusion: Bravo, Jaime for one of the most outstanding task performances of any Amazing Race on that ROADBLOCK. It's too bad that the editing of the final task did not bring out just how incrediel your performance was.

An Exclusive 2nd Place Detour with Cara and Jaime The Amazing Race
by Reg Seeton

After 14 seasons of The Amazing Race, the all-female teams have had a hard time finishing the race in first place to capture the million dollar prize. This season it was former NFL cheerleaders, Cara and Jaime, who broke through The Amazing Race defense to score an all-female touchdown to become one of the final three teams up for competition in the last leg in Maui. Although Cara and Jaime ran a strong, often emotionally explosive race through Switzerland, Romania, Russia, India and China before touching down in Maui, the former NFL sideline girls failed convert their Amazing race extra point for the victory in Hawaiian overtime.

After struggling on the beaches of Maui to transport a dead pig for ceremonial burial in the final Detour, Cara and Jaime forged ahead to catch up to the first place mother and son team of Margie and Luke and the brother and sister team of Tammy and Victor who were in second place. Although Luke was well out in front of the other teams during the final Road Block, which was a skill testing surfboard puzzle based on all the previous countries in the race, Victor breezed through challenge while Luke faltered, which opened a window of opportunity for Jaime who also passed Luke to leave the Road Block in second place behind Tammy and her brother. When it was all said and done for the 14th season of The Amazing Race, Cara and Jaime couldn't catch Tammy and Victor who hit the mat first to win the race and the million-dollar prize. But the all-female, former NFL cheerleading team did hit the mat in second place not too far ahead of Margie and Luke who Jaime helped get over the final Road Block.

The morning after the nail-biting season finale of The Amazing Race 14, we took an exclusive one-on-one detour with Cara and Jaime to find how more about the final leg in Maui, the amazing yet frustrating dynamics of the race, how they felt about their luck with cab drivers, which Road Blocks they would go back in time to repeat, and whether either Cara or Jaime will ever eat pork after getting a swine beat down on the beach in Maui.

THE DEADBOLT: So, Jamie, the race was emotional I take it?

JAIME EDMONDSON: Yes, it is emotional.

THE DEADBOLT: From what we did or didn’t see, what frustrated you the most?

JAIME: I’d say our luck with the taxis was very frustrating. At least it just never went our way. It went our way once to get us into the final three. That taxi driver actually did understand and he drove like he was in the Indy 500. But other than that one taxi, it just never went our way. And you can’t blame the other teams for getting the luck with the taxis because it’s really out of everyone’s hands, but very frustrating for me. I can accept losing because I didn’t compete. I can’t accept losing at the hands of someone else.

THE DEADBOLT: Cara, were you surprised that the cab company didn’t find the address for you guys?

CARA ROSENTHAL: No. By that point I was not surprised at all. With our luck, just through this whole race, for anyone to have been really helpful or knowledgeable about their own terrain and working track would’ve been far too convenient and too lucky for us. So at that point, I was not shocked that the woman wouldn’t help us. I was just like, ‘Wow.’

JAIME: It was like the road only went two ways, front or back, and it’s very frustrating.

THE DEADBOLT: So how tough was the laid back vibe of Hawaii compared to the other cities?

JAIME: You know, it wasn’t that he didn’t understand that we were in a race. It’s just that he didn’t understand until, actually, the very last ride up to the finish mat what we were saying to him, which was, ‘This is for a million dollars, sir. Please, this is worth a million dollars to us.’ You know, have a little urgency. Then he finally got it when he realized we were coming in second place. You know, I guess it was good he got it in the end. Better late than never, I suppose.

THE DEADBOLT: In what ways do you think your alliance with Margie and Luke helped you along the way?

CARA: I don’t know. I think that Jaime would agree that the way it helped us most is it enabled us to make a really wonderful friendship with them. I mean, the reality is our "alliance" was pretty limited to telling each other we were on the same flight. Then we were on the same flight when we told each other. They didn’t help us at the tasks. The one time that they did uphold our very loose alliance was actually an alliance the three final teams made at the point when we were heading to Russia.

And we thought that we were the three teams going to be racing each other to the final and we said, ‘We don’t care who it is if anyone is on our plane or behind us, we will all U-Turn them.’ And it just so happened that it was Mike and Mel and Amanda and Kris to save each other, and that was the only time we really had an alliance that altered the course of the race. Other than that, it was pretty much just sharing information. And to be completely honest, we shared information with Victor and Tammy just as often and as much as we did with Margie and Luke, and vice versa. They did with us as well, absolutely.

THE DEADBOLT: If you could go back, what Road Block do you wish you could’ve performed in place of the other?

JAIME: I would say I would’ve done the foot massage for Cara just knowing how much she despises having her feet touched and how painful it was for me to watch her in pain. So I would have rather taken it on. But it wasn’t an option because I had just done three Road Blocks in a row and we had to have Cara catch up and we couldn’t max out. We wanted to go into the final leg having the option of either one of us being able to do the final Road Block. So putting us at an even five and five and that sixth Road Block wouldn’t be ...

CARA: Well, we also didn’t know at that time that it was going to be a foot massage. We thought maybe a body massage and I was even a little bit anxious about that because I just - You know, I was a ballerina for my whole life and I’ve had so many disgusting foot injuries and I guess I’ve just created a mental paranoia, for lack of a better term, about having my feet dealt with, touched, especially with that massage. You know, she’s hitting pressure points where I can recall, "Wow, I had broken bones there. So I think that’s probably why it was so incredibly painful for me and I had a very bad reaction. Jaime can tell you; for about a month after we were like, ‘Oh, my God, when are your feet going to recover?’ Because they were still bruised and I had blood pools in one of my arches. I mean, it as not a pretty sight.

JAIME: Yeah, I would’ve done that one just so I wouldn’t have to watch her in pain. It was heart-breaking to be helpless and watching it, and I was covering my ears waiting for it to be over because you just feel so helpless. I imagine it must be what a man feels like watching his wife give birth ... I’m just joking, I’m pretty sure childbirth is even worse than that.

CARA: [laughs] Maybe not for me, because I’m not nearly as paranoid about that, for some reason, as I am about pedicures. But for me, I would’ve liked, just for the experience of it, to do the bungee jump. Jaime really stepped up to the plate. Before I left, I told my mother - My mother, bless her, she was like, ‘I don’t want you doing skydiving, bungee jumping. I don’t want you doing any of these wild adventures. I was like, "Mom, I’m going on The Amazing Race, these are promises I can’t make to you." She said, "If you don’t have to bungee jump, please don’t do it." And Jamie knew about that, because we were joking about it, so Jamie said, "Fine, I’ll do it, but your parents owe me a steak dinner," which they are getting her.

THE DEADBOLT: Are you guys ever going to eat pork after carrying the pig?

CARA: I actually don’t eat pork as it is, I’m Jewish. So it’s not an issue for me. Actually, one of my family members said a really funny comment to me. They said, "Doesn’t it just figure that pork and Jesus got you in the end, Cara." So it was a little inside funny joke I got a little chuckle out of. [laughs]

I would give Victor more credit than Jaime and Luke, apskip, because he solved it all by himself.

Who knows how long the other two teams would have been stuck there if they weren't allowed to share information.

It seemed like Luke was just guessing at the end.

I think Victor did great and he did do the puzzle totally by himself, not helped by Jamie's sabotage attempt with the alligator which he immediaetly rejected as bogus. He did win after all. However, the only assistance Jamie got was on the last one (episode #1, church of san Antonio) from Luke after Margie urged cooperation. At that point it was too late to alter the outcome.

I think that if Jaime couldn't figure out leg 1's picture, Margie and Luke could have come in 2nd, and Jaime and Cara could come in 3rd.  THere is a big difference between $25,000 and $10,000.

Exclusive: Cara Rosenthal, Jaime Edmondson talk 'Amazing Race'

By Reality TV World staff, 05/13/2009

After visiting three continents and traveling more than 40,00 miles around the world, The Amazing Race's fourteenth edition came down to a fateful taxi-ride race and a memory recall task in Maui, Hawaii.

However after encountering difficulties with both, the controversial "former NFL Cheerleaders" team of Cara Rosenthal, a 26-year-old law student from Boca Raton, FL, and Jaime Edmondson, a 29-year-old former police officer from Ft. Lauderdale, FL, came up short and finished second in the race-around-the-world competition.

On Monday, Cara and Jaime spoke to Reality TV World about whether they feel any of their behavior was inappropriate or have any regrets -- and in the process, seemed to demonstrate why the show's CBS.com "Elimination Station" segments showed most of the Race's previously eliminated contestants repeatedly hoping the women would be the next team eliminated.

Reality TV World: First of all, congratulations on finishing second

Jaime and Cara: (in unison) Thank you.

Reality TV World: What was your reaction when you got to that final Roadblock and saw that Luke was already practically done and Victor seemed to have already pulled quite a few of his boards [as well]?

Jaime: Um, I don't think at the moment we really worried about them.  I mean we lost about 45 minutes between the gas, going to the wrong place -- which was selling surfboards as opposed to the surfboard fence -- and then sitting on the side of the road since he didn't know which direction to go in, so when we got there we were trying to focus more on catching up as opposed to seeing how far along they were.

But we were happy to see they were both still there.

Reality TV World: But at that point, were you optimistic still at your chances of winning or did you kind of begin resigning yourselves to not winning?

Jaime: Neither of the above.

Cara: No, we were absolutely optimistic and I have to say that Jaime really rocked that task.  I mean we did have to come from behind but it's a position we had been in before.  The one thing that we're very proud of, and were at the time always confident in, was that when we got to tasks -- no matter where we started in the rank -- we always did them well and quickly and successfully.

So neither of us was worried that we didn't stand a chance.  You know, it just turned out the way it did.  But at no point were we concerned -- I was not concerned -- that Jaime couldn't do it at any point.

Reality TV World: So did you guys know that was the absolute last task at that point or were you still hoping that there might be something else after that?

Jaime: Well I mean of course before you get handed the clue you -- if you see one team leave you have the hope that it's not over -- but once you're handed the clue and it says go, you know, 'Make your way to the mat,' you know, you -- and in a place such as Maui, where there was literally only two ways to go on the island.

I mean you could go forward or backwards and knowing that it was a straight shot to the mat we realized that we were going to be second.

Cara: But while Jaime was doing the task we had no clue that there wasn't anything else [after that]

Reality TV World: So until Tammy and Victor got their clue and you overheard them or whatever...

(Unintelligible, Jaime and Cara talking simultaneously)

Cara: No we didn't overhear it, it wasn't until we received the clue that said go to the final mat that we realized that was where Victor and Tammy had just taken off to and at that point we knew that, I mean barring some extenuating circumstances...

Jaime: ...a flat (laughs)

Cara: ...a flat tire, that we were gunning for second at that time.  We knew that as we were taking that final ride.  But while Jaime was doing the task and until we received the clue after completion of our task we did not know that it was straight to the mat.

Reality TV World: Okay...

Cara: So as far as we were concerned at that time, there was a lot of hope.  Because as far as we were concerned Tammy and Victor could have been doing another task and just have gotten a chance to get there earlier and get started faster.

Reality TV World: So both of the other teams seem to have anticipated that there was going to be a task at the end that had something to do with remembering everything that had happened on the race before that.  Was that the same case in your situation?

Jaime: Yeah, I wrote everything down along the way.  I kept a journal of -- and you know, it was actually more for my own memories because I knew were couldn't take photos, we couldn't take anything personal with us.  No cameras, nothing like that.  So for my own self, knowing that we were so in-and-out of every place, I wanted to log everything so that later on in life I could go back and read it.

It wasn't that I was anticipating a memory challenge but I'd seen the show enough times to know that that has happened in the final leg on several occasions. So it didn't hurt to take the notes but, yeah.

Reality TV World: But did you just take them or had you been studying them on the plane rides, you know, apparently like Luke [had]?

(Unintelligible, Jaime and Cara talking simultaneously)

Cara: [Unintelligible] read it

Jaime: I read it right before...

Cara: She had read it right before we had gone, which was ultimately why we decided for Jaime to do the task instead of myself. I knew what we had done but Jaime had taken the time to re-read her journal and I said 'You know what, this is all you girl, you got it' and this is her dream, so it was perfect for her to do our final task.

Reality TV World: During that task, it almost seemed like instead of pulling his boards off and taking them over to the side [to his private mounting area], Victor was kind of just pulling them out of the pile and putting them a little bit on the side.  Were you ever tempted to take a look at what he had over there?

Jaime: No, I was never tempted to cheat my way to win.  I'm not a cheater and Cara and I earned every single thing we did along the way ourselves without the help of anyone else.

Every task was done by us and we're very, very, very proud of being the highest finishing female team ever on The Amazing Race and no one can take that from us and no one can say that they did it for us and I was never going to be able to win the race because I cheated. That's not something that would have made me proud.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Like most other teams in The Amazing Race history, Jaime and Cara were shown working with other teams or looking at how another team was completing a task several times during the season, including during the finale episode when they was shown completing their pig luau task after Jaime looked at Tammy and Victor's progress and noticed they had removed their incorrect palm frond leaves.  In addition, the finale also showed Jaime stating she never would have completed the finale Roadblock without Luke's help.

Reality TV World: Yeah, but weren't there some situations...

Cara: Additionally, even if Jaime wanted to, she couldn't see what Luke had up or...

(Unintelligible, Jaime and Cara talking simultaneously)

Cara: ...they were all facing away from each other so they couldn't see each other's boards

Reality TV World: No, I understand that, Cara, but there was a point before Victor took them over to his area where they were just off on the side.

Cara: Yeah, Jaime didn't have time...

Jaime: ...he was never over in my area

(Unintelligible, Jaime and Cara talking simultaneously)

Reality TV World: Okay, that's fine...

Cara: She couldn't see them from there, she was in the middle of the pile doing she her own transport of boards.  And additionally, from where we were standing as the team supporters, we couldn't see anything they were doing.

Literally, we couldn't see the pictures on the boards in the pile, we couldn't see the boards the they were putting up on their fence, on their wall.  I mean we were rendered entirely hopeless to our teammate, which honestly is very frustrating.  When it's a team sport, to get down to the final task and that...

(Unintelligible, Jaime and Cara talking simultaneously)

Cara: ... beyond one person, [like] seasons prior....

(Unintelligible, Jaime and Cara talking simultaneously)

Jaime:  ...yeah, if it had been like Season 13

Cara: ...where they could at least talk

Jaime: ...(unintelligible) each other

Cara: ...where I'm seeing, is any of this ringing a bell, and I'd have said 'Yes, this rings a bell' or 'No,' it just would have been helpful.  At that point you're so tired and you've traveled for so long.  I think Jaime just did an amazing job.

Reality TV World: Once Victor and Tammy left the Roadblock there was that point there where you guys came to the decision to work with Margie and Luke to help each other finish the task and who ended up going first [in revealing the other's missing symbol] basically ended up determining who finished second and who finished third.  How did you guys determine who was going to help whom first?

Cara: We didn't

Jaime: It wasn't like that

Cara: It was 'Why don't you help each other?' and they said 'Okay' and Luke was standing there and he pointed his out and then Jaime said 'Alright,' she moved it and said 'Let's see if this is right.' [They] then said 'Right' and she said 'Okay' [and] turned all of hers around for Luke to see and he went and did his and we got our clue and we hopped in the car and you know, it was never...

Jaime: It was never...

Cara: ...but that point we weren't even, we weren't racing like thinking who would be second or third, it was neither of us is probably going to be first so let's just get there and get it done.

Reality TV World: Cara, you had comment at the end where it seemed like for a split second you were worried that Jaime was going to leave the Roadblock without honoring her end of the deal with Luke.  Was that the case, or if not, what was the comment actually about?

Cara: Um, which comment are you referring to, I'm sorry?  What did I say and then I can answer your question.

Reality TV World: It was comment where after you guys had completed the Roadblock task you were telling Jaime to help Luke -- to tell Luke what [his missing board] answer was.  It seemed like you had some concern that she was going to leave the Roadblock...

Jaime: Are you trying to say that I had the intention of not doing it and only did it because Cara told me to?

Reality TV World: No, I'm not...

Jaime: Is that what you're asking?

Reality TV World: No, I'm not making that implication at all, I'm simply asking Cara what that comment was about.

Cara: Um, I think because we -- when you're in the Race your so focused and sometimes details can get forgotten about easily and we got the clue and we were like 'Let's go!' and I was like 'Wait, we didn't show Luke yet' and...

Jaime: That's actually not how it happened at all.  There was no way, whether Cara told me or not, that I was going to not tell him.

Cara: Right.

(Unintelligible, Jaime and Cara talking simultaneously)

Reality TV World: I understand that Jaime, I'm trying to understand what Cara was thinking at the time when she made that comment.

(Unintelligible, Jaime and Cara talking simultaneously again)

Jaime: ...because if she hadn't told me I wouldn't have done it, that was not the case at all.

Reality TV World: Nobody's accusing you of that Jaime, I'm just trying to understand why Cara made that comment

Jaime: 'Oh, I forgot?' I didn't forget anything.

Cara: No, no, no -- I wasn't trying to suggest that she forgot anything,  What I was saying was I probably said that just like 'Okay, let's show Luke and let's get a move on' you know type of a thing.

Reality TV World: Okay. Jaime, did you really call the police for directions [during that Maui cab ride]?

Jaime: Yes I did.  Because you know, he took us to get gas, he took us to a surf shop instead of the surfboard fences and then, he -- after we left there he just pulled over to the side of the road, because she literally did not know which direction to go in.

And I'm like, there's only two options.  We can either move forward or backwards because it's just a two-way street in Maui, there is no other way we could go.  So I said it either has to be in front of us or we need to turn around.

So he called dispatch [and] as you saw, she refused to offer any assistance, which I thought was really unfortunate considering that we were, you know, paying customers and our fare was running, so even if we weren't in a race or...

Reality TV World: So you don't think your [own] behavior was inappropriate or anything?

Jaime: No, I don't think my behavior was inappropriate, asking if we could call dispatch or someone to help us because if I wasn't in a race and if you were in the race and you were a paying customer and your fare cab is running up...

Reality TV World: I'm not talking about asking to call dispatch, I'm talking about the comments and the way you were berating the driver...

Jaime: Berating the driver?  I'm... I'm confused what you're asking.  You asked me if I called the police and I'm telling you the scenario that we went through prior to me resorting to calling the police.

Cara: Right, and you have to remember that Jaime has experience as a former police officer so she knows that at any point the police officers have to know the map of their territory and working zone just better than anyone else because they get calls, you know, in emergency situations.

They have to know how to get there, they don't have time to like [check] Google Maps or whatever...

Jaime: Yeah...

Cara: So we knew that they would be able to help us...

Jaime: ...if the cab company wouldn't help us I figured that at his point the only people that could possibly help us had to be the police.  So I actually called 911...

Reality TV World: [But] I would think that as a [former] police officer...

Jaime: ...and I said 'I hate to bother you, it's not an emergency like or death, but you know, to us it's an emergency, at this moment.  And the lady was very nice.

The dispatcher at the police department was very helpful, she knew right away the cross streets and they had no problem helping us and once she gave us the mile marker we determined that we just needed to keep going straight, we were heading in the right direction.  They were very, very helpful, the police department.  It was the only thing I could think of at that point to figure out where we need to go.

Reality TV World: So when you were a police officer, would you have deemed calling 911 for that type of a situation to be appropriate behavior?

Jaime:  I'm -- you're really rubbing me the wrong way.  I mean your tone and the way that you're trying to insinuate that everything that I'm doing is wrong or bad, I don't appreciate it.

EDITOR'S NOTE: 911 is intended for genuine emergency use only.  Illegitimate or frivolous use is increasingly choking 911 systems nationwide and resulting in critical delays for callers that are experiencing a genuine emergency.  Non-emergency use of the 911 system can result in fines or jail time in several states.  Please do not attempt what you saw on TV at home.

Reality TV World: I'm just asking a question...

Jaime: If you're going to treat me this way then I'm not going to have an interview with you.

Reality TV World: I'm just asking a question Jaime. If you don't want to answer it that's fine, I guess, but...

Jaime: One it's wrong to ask the driver to call dispatch -- it's just the way that you're coming across, you know.

Reality TV World: Okay, so there were a lot of scenes on the show where your behavior -- the way you were treating your drivers in general, not just in Hawaii -- seemed to give, you know, an "ugly American" impression.  Are you saying...

Jaime: ...obviously this is a role that you want to take so (unintelligible)

EDITOR'S NOTE: Jaime appears to leave the call

Cara: I think the thing is, and you know people have to remember [that] reality television as a whole, you know, you're putting yourself out there for hours and hours on end. You know we're filmed 24-hours a day, barring Pit Stops, so, you know, sometimes when you have to compact hours and hours into one hour, aspects of your journey and your adventure are going to be left out.

And for Jaime, often times what was shown was when we had been pushed to the point -- pushed past the point of me dealing with the taxi cab driver and saying 'Hey, do you know how to get us here, blah, blah, blah' and we'd reached the point -- and Jaime is person who is going to say it like it is, you know.

Here in New York for the finale, we've had so many people stop us on the street be like 'You're a New Yorker at heart' because, you know, they would tell you that they wouldn't have held back at all either.

And you know what, Jaime didn't hold back.  Jaime was herself and I guess, you know, people have misunderstood or misinterpreted that that was the only form of communication she had was getting frustrated with the taxi cab drivers.

There were many times where she was not frustrated or we had been lost twice before she got frustrated.  Or been lost an hour before Jaime started getting, like, frantic and riled up, and you know, that happens.

And Jaime understands that and she -- they always, Jaime always at the end of the day, with our taxi cab drivers, after we hit the final mat and had to go back and you know, settle our taxi bills and get our backpacks or whatever -- where she said 'I'm so sorry, I know I was horrible to you today, thank you, thank you for everything.'  We would give them extra money, we would tip as big as we could -- and that was all Jaime, because Jaime was our money gal.

So, you know, I mean, it is unfortunate that one aspect of our journey in taxi cabs was really highlighted but a lot of people have asked me -- in interviews and just in random emails and such -- why I didn't step in more or whatever.

And the reality is I didn't have to step in, Jaime was Jamie and she's my friend.  And you know, I said earlier that friendship is about being there for your friends at the very highs and the very lows and everything in between and I am proud of the way Jaime handled herself and that she didn't, you know, fake anything [and] that she was true to herself.

And it's just unfortunate that this 'ugly American' stereotype has been kind of stamped on this team.  Surely, I hope people can understand that what we were doing was racing for a million dollars, not having a leisurely vacation around Maui.

I assure you when Jaime goes there for a vacation in the next few weeks -- which she is -- she's not going be yelling at her taxi cab driver for not knowing his way or not getting us there soon enough.  Because she's not racing for a million dollars and having to block, you know, 45 minutes, or in China the same thing, or whatever we were.

So it is unfortunate but I have told Jaime that I believe not many people can handle that situation better.  And you know, a lot of other teams didn't have quite as unfortunate luck quite as often as we did with taxi cab drivers so yes, did that hold it together better than us?  Sure.

We would have held it together much better if we had a good driver too, as you could see in Beijing.  We had this wonderful driver at the very end and Jaime was wonderful, she was happy.

Reality TV World: So Cara, are you saying that you regret some of that behavior?

Cara: Do I regret some of that behavior?

Reality TV World: Yeah, do you regret any of that or you just saying that's the way it was and, you know...

Cara: I... what do you mean by 'regret that behavior,' do I regret Jaime's behavior?

Reality TV World: Collectively as a team...

Cara: I'm feeling very sad for viewers that that's the only way that some of them had interpreted our team.  Because we brought a lot more to the table than just...

(A female voice whispers 'the edit')

Cara: ...the edit.  And we brought more to the table than just bad taxis.  We were really good at our tasks even with troubles getting to and from them.  We survived because we excelled.  When we were driving ourselves we were having a good old time, we even turned on music for some of it -- we were happy, you know.

But I have no regrets about the way we performed, about the way we ran this race.  I think if we had run it any different we may not have been the most successful female team of all time.

Reality TV World: Were you aware [during] that pig-carrying task in Maui that part of the problem seemed to be the pig was unbalanced on the pole? It seemed like the pig was practically touching you most of the time when you were struggling to carry your end of it.

Cara: Are you talking to me or...

Reality TV World: Yes, I'm sorry

Cara: It really wasn't that it wasn't unbalanced.  It actually was in the middle but what really was the problem was, what happened I have extremely abnormally small hands.  I swear, I can take any (unintelligible) challenge and I'm 5' 8" and I can take anyone to a challenge and mine will be smaller than yours (laughs)

It's silly, really.  But I actually could not get my hands around the pole.  And it was funny because at the time you know, Jaime -- and this was a perfect example -- Jaime's not being mean to me or blaming me, she wasn't even upsetting me, it was I was getting frustrated that I could not get my hand around the pole (laughs)

I was like 'Damn these small hands!' and it's funny because when we got back in the cab Jaime was 'I was so surprised, that's so unlike you, you know, to have struggled with that' because we're both very, very tough.

But I said 'Jaime, my hands couldn't fit around the pole!' and she said 'Oh my god, I forgot about your freakingly small hands!' and we had a good giggle about it, small hands and oils [from seasoning the pig earlier].

But I don't think either one of us was carrying a greater burden.  I mean, we even thought at one point, we switched sides of the bamboo pole so if it looked unbalanced on camera it didn't appear unbalanced to us in person.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Jaime appears to rejoin the call

Jaime: And we knew that the proper way to do that task was to carry the pig on our shoulders, and we tried...

Cara: ...for a while

Jaime: ...that numerous times, before, you know, beginning to walk down the beach.  But we, literally, we just did not have the upper body strength to get it up there [on our shoulders].  And we tried and tried because we knew that was the proper way to do it [and] we knew it was the most efficient way to do it, but it was just unfortunate that we just did not have the physical upper body strength to lift it up there.

The highest we could lift it was to our waist and we couldn't get any higher so we said 'You know what, we're going to have to walk it' and between the greasy hands and the slippery bamboo pole it was just extremely physically challenging.

Cara: Oh yeah, my hands, Jaime could tell you, my hands...

(Unintelligible, Jaime and Cara talking simultaneously)

Jaime: ...for weeks

Cara: ..ripped open, my fingertips especially because of the way my hands fell into that pole and weren't really able to grasp it.  My fingertips, literally, each one of them had been ripped open.

Reality TV World: Given what happened to Kisha and Jennifer on last week's episode, there's been a lot of discussion about exactly what people would be willing to do for a million dollars....

Jaime: I told Cara, and she agrees, that she probably would have wet her pants!

(Jaime and Cara laugh)

Cara: I probably would have for a million dollars [but], you know, I don't fault Jennifer at all.  First of all, there was five minutes between us.  Five minutes in Race language is equivalent to five hours.  I mean so many things could have happened in just a matter of minutes that it did not come down to Jennifer going to the bathroom.

It was a combination of things.  Some people have asked if I think they underestimated how quickly I would eat those bugs, well yeah, I underestimated how quickly I would eat those critters, you know?  (laughs)

I really powered it out somehow and I think that if they had any concern about us being even remotely in the race at that point that she would have wet her pants too.  I think that there was comfort, she was really in pain and I think we can all understand how that is.

I mean that had a long way to run to get to the mat -- it was almost impossible to find Phil.  Once you got there there were just so many people at the Bird's Nest and it was hard for us even to find him.  So I think it was a combination of so many factors and they were great, great athletes.  Great competitors.

We even felt bad, we were so shocked.  We were sure we were out of it, I mean positive we were out of it. So when Phil said we were third we almost thought he was playing a joke on us at first, that's why we started laughing.  We didn't understand what he was saying.

We felt bad because they were so wonderful to run the race with and we've maintained a wonderful friendship with all of the Final 4 teams.  We were just with Jenn and Kisha and Tammy last week at the Kentucky Derby, just having a wonderful time, all by our own accord.

It is just the way the race goes and we all certainly understand that.

Reality TV World: Can you tell me, how did you guys end up on the show?  Who originally applied and why?

Cara: It was all Jaime.

Jaime: Yeah, I'd been a fan since the show first began.  I always wanted to be on the show, there just never was -- between college and cheering for the Dolphins and then being a police officer -- there was really never an opportunity to just take off, you know, six weeks of my life without any penalty.

And so finally this last May when I saw that they were accepting applications I said 'You know what, it's now or never' and I said 'Who gives me the best shot at winning this race?' and without a doubt, the first person that came to mind was Cara.

So I sent her a text message at 7 o'clock in the morning (laughs)

Cara: 7AM, no lie...(laughs)

Jaime: ...saying 'Do you want to go on The Amazing Race with me, I think we could win?' And she wrote back 'Sure, what is The Amazing Race?'

(Jaime and Cara laugh)

Jaime: so she had never seen the show and I was like 'Oh, okay, well go online to ah, there's a groovy site dot com, and you can see past episodes.' And so she watched some and she just knew if it was something I would want to do, she's very competitive as well, she know it was something she would want to do.

And after watching a few episodes she said 'Absolutely' and began doing her homework and catching up on as many seasons as she could. And we just made a one-take video at her parents' house in south Florida (Cara laughs)

[Just] one time and we were thinking 'You know what, no one is ever going to watch this video, I'm sure they get thousands of people who apply' and about a month later they called us and the rest is history.

I thought the rule was that teams had to settle bills before they could go to the final mat. Isn't that the problem Uchenna & Joyce had?

What part of the interview Hooky? I can't stop laughing long enough to read through it !

Gotcha  .. hmmm I'll guess if they came in first this would have been a problem unless the clue specifically stated they could do so?

And Jaime understands that and she -- they always, Jaime always at the end of the day, with our taxi cab drivers, after we hit the final mat and had to go back and you know, settle our taxi bills and get our backpacks or whatever -- where she said 'I'm so sorry, I know I was horrible to you today, thank you, thank you for everything.'  We would give them extra money, we would tip as big as we could -- and that was all Jaime, because Jaime was our money gal.

This is how the interview reads to me:

Exclusive: Cara Rosenthal, Jaime Edmondson talk 'Amazing Race'

By Reality TV World staff, 05/13/2009

Reality TV World: First of all, congratulations on finishing second

Jaime and Cara: (in unison)  :talk

Reality TV World: What was your reaction when you got to that final Roadblock and saw that Luke was already practically done and Victor seemed to have already pulled quite a few of his boards [as well]?

(Unintelligible, Jaime and Cara talking simultaneously)  :talk

Reality TV World: But at that point, were you optimistic still at your chances of winning or did you kind of begin resigning yourselves to not winning?

(Unintelligible, Jaime and Cara talking simultaneously)  :talk

Reality TV World: So did you guys know that was the absolute last task at that point or were you still hoping that there might be something else after that?

(Unintelligible, Jaime and Cara talking simultaneously)  :talk

Reality TV World: So until Tammy and Victor got their clue and you overheard them or whatever...

(Unintelligible, Jaime and Cara talking simultaneously)  :talk

Reality TV World: Okay...

(Unintelligible, Jaime and Cara talking simultaneously)  :talk

Reality TV World: So both of the other teams seem to have anticipated that there was going to be a task at the end that had something to do with remembering everything that had happened on the race before that.  Was that the same case in your situation?

(Unintelligible, Jaime and Cara talking simultaneously)  :talk

Reality TV World: But did you just take them or had you been studying them on the plane rides, you know, apparently like Luke [had]?

(Unintelligible, Jaime and Cara talking simultaneously)  :talk :talk

Reality TV World: During that task, it almost seemed like instead of pulling his boards off and taking them over to the side [to his private mounting area], Victor was kind of just pulling them out of the pile and putting them a little bit on the side.  Were you ever tempted to take a look at what he had over there?

(Unintelligible, Jaime and Cara talking simultaneously)  :talk

EDITOR'S NOTE: Like most other teams in The Amazing Race history, Jaime and Cara were shown working with other teams or looking at how another team was completing a task several times during the season, including during the finale episode when they was shown completing their pig luau task after Jaime looked at Tammy and Victor's progress and noticed they had removed their incorrect palm frond leaves.  In addition, the finale also showed Jaime stating she never would have completed the finale Roadblock without Luke's help.

Reality TV World: Yeah, but weren't there some situations...

(Unintelligible, Jaime and Cara talking simultaneously)  :talk :talk

Reality TV World: No, I understand that, Cara, but there was a point before Victor took them over to his area where they were just off on the side.

(Unintelligible, Jaime and Cara talking simultaneously)  :talk :talk

Reality TV World: Okay, that's fine...

(Unintelligible, Jaime and Cara talking simultaneously)  :talk :talk

Reality TV World: Once Victor and Tammy left the Roadblock there was that point there where you guys came to the decision to work with Margie and Luke to help each other finish the task and who ended up going first [in revealing the other's missing symbol] basically ended up determining who finished second and who finished third.  How did you guys determine who was going to help whom first?

(Unintelligible, Jaime and Cara talking simultaneously)  :talk

Reality TV World: Cara, you had comment at the end where it seemed like for a split second you were worried that Jaime was going to leave the Roadblock without honoring her end of the deal with Luke.  Was that the case, or if not, what was the comment actually about?

(Unintelligible, Jaime and Cara talking simultaneously)  :talk

Reality TV World: It was comment where after you guys had completed the Roadblock task you were telling Jaime to help Luke -- to tell Luke what [his missing board] answer was.  It seemed like you had some concern that she was going to leave the Roadblock...

(Unintelligible, Jaime and Cara talking simultaneously)  :talk

Reality TV World: No, I'm not...

(Unintelligible, Jaime and Cara talking simultaneously)  :talk

Reality TV World: No, I'm not making that implication at all, I'm simply asking Cara what that comment was about.

(Unintelligible, Jaime and Cara talking simultaneously)  :talk :talk

Reality TV World: I understand that Jaime, I'm trying to understand what Cara was thinking at the time when she made that comment.

(Unintelligible, Jaime and Cara talking simultaneously again)  :talk :talk

Reality TV World: Nobody's accusing you of that Jaime, I'm just trying to understand why Cara made that comment

(Unintelligible, Jaime and Cara talking simultaneously)  :talk

Reality TV World: Okay. Jaime, did you really call the police for directions [during that Maui cab ride]?

(Unintelligible, Jaime and Cara talking simultaneously)  :talk

Reality TV World: So you don't think your [own] behavior was inappropriate or anything?

(Unintelligible, Jaime and Cara talking simultaneously)  :talk

Reality TV World: I'm not talking about asking to call dispatch, I'm talking about the comments and the way you were berating the driver...

(Unintelligible, Jaime and Cara talking simultaneously)  :talk

Reality TV World: [But] I would think that as a [former] police officer...

(Unintelligible, Jaime and Cara talking simultaneously)  :talk

Reality TV World: So when you were a police officer, would you have deemed calling 911 for that type of a situation to be appropriate behavior?

Jaime:  I'm -- you're really rubbing me the wrong way.

(Unintelligible, Jaime and Cara talking simultaneously)  :talk

Reality TV World: Okay, so there were a lot of scenes on the show where your behavior -- the way you were treating your drivers in general, not just in Hawaii -- seemed to give, you know, an "ugly American" impression.  Are you saying...

Jaime: ...obviously this is a role that you want to take so (unintelligible)

EDITOR'S NOTE: Jaime appears to leave the call

Reality TV World: So Cara, are you saying that you regret some of that behavior?

(Unintelligible, Jaime and Cara talking simultaneously)  :talk

Reality TV World: Yeah, do you regret any of that or you just saying that's the way it was and, you know...

(Unintelligible, Jaime and Cara talking simultaneously)  :talk

Reality TV World: Collectively as a team...

(Unintelligible, Jaime and Cara talking simultaneously)  :talk

(A female voice whispers 'the edit')

(Unintelligible, Jaime and Cara talking simultaneously)  :talk

Reality TV World: Were you aware [during] that pig-carrying task in Maui that part of the problem seemed to be the pig was unbalanced on the pole? It seemed like the pig was practically touching you most of the time when you were struggling to carry your end of it.

(Unintelligible, Jaime and Cara talking simultaneously)  :talk

Reality TV World: Yes, I'm sorry

(Unintelligible, Jaime and Cara talking simultaneously)  :talk

EDITOR'S NOTE: Jaime appears to rejoin the call

(Unintelligible, Jaime and Cara talking simultaneously)  :talk :talk

Reality TV World: Given what happened to Kisha and Jennifer on last week's episode, there's been a lot of discussion about exactly what people would be willing to do for a million dollars....

(Jaime and Cara laugh)

(Unintelligible, Jaime and Cara talking simultaneously)  :talk

Reality TV World: Can you tell me, how did you guys end up on the show?  Who originally applied and why?

(Unintelligible, Jaime and Cara talking simultaneously)  :talk

The Amazing Race: Jaime and Cara Allege Other Teams Were Fakers
by Sara Bibel

Nobody expected cheerleader Jaime and Cara to end up the highest ranking all-female team in the history of The Amazing Race. The duo never won a leg. Jaime was this season’s designated Ugly American. Yet, despite a taxi driver who took them on an unplanned detour, they came in second. Jaime and Cara sound off on getting the villain edit, why they were more authentic than some of the other teams, and winning the prize America didn’t get to see.

How long did you stay at the surfboard challenge before you and Luke decided to share information?

Jaime: It was pretty much immediate. Once Victor was gone and Luke and I were only missing one surfboard his Mom said, “Why don’t you just work with Jaime?” and we did. When you’re on the Race you have no concept of time. A minute felt like an hour.

How much time did you lose because your cab driver didn’t know where he was going?

Cara: We lost about 45 minutes. It was a pretty substantial amount of time.

Why did the cab dispatcher get so angry when you called to ask for directions?

Jaime: I don’t know why she chose to be so unhelpful. I would think that if you work for a taxi company and one of your drivers calls you I don’t know why the company would choose not to help the taxi driver. I imagine we weren’t the first team throughout the day to call. I’d like to believe at that point she was busy with other work and just couldn’t continue to help.

The two of you seemed to have bad taxis throughout the race. Do you think it was chance? Or were you cursed?

Cara: It was luck. So much of this game comes down to luck. The tasks were definitely not easy for anyone. To be able to survive without ever getting where we needed to go in a timely fashion is something we should both be very proud of.

Did you think you had a chance of catching up with Tammy and Victor when you finished the surfboard challenge?

Jaime: No. Once we got the clue that said, “Go to the finish line,” there was no hope in my mind, barring a flat tire or some sort of major penalty. We were proud to be the highest ranking female team.

Why do you think no all female team has won yet?

Cara: Like we were talking about earlier, it doesn’t have anything to do with gender. It really is just a matter of luck. Had our taxi driver not got lost, we could have come and gone before Victor and Tammy showed up.

How do you feel about Jaime getting the “villain edit”?

Jaime: I knew going in to this race that I would be giving up certain things to follow my dream. I’ve wanted to be on this show since the first season. I was okay with the trade off of the way I suspected I’d be edited. I’d rather be the villain than be edited as a dumb cheerleader. If there’s one thing Cara and I are not, we are not dumb cheerleaders. I assume many people thought that was going to be our character.

Cara: I think that we were also really proud of our edit in the sene that it’s very real. We didn’t fake it, not for one second. We didn’t fake our friendship. We didn’t fake our relationship. We didn’t fake moments where we were frustrated with each other. We were real from the start to the finish. Not every team that we raced with can say that.

Jaime: Watching it back or hearing people say, “I don’t want that team to win because she’s a bitch,” so if you’re watching reality television you’d rather see a team win that wasn’t being themselves? That was trying very hard to be another character because they were so concerned about what the world’s going to think about them? There were a lot of people in our cast who were not themselves. We knew them behind the scenes and their characters on the show were not the same. I think it’s funny that these big time reality fans were not fans of the team that was real.

Who was being fake?

Cara: I don’t know if it was necessarily one person or team. People’s relationships with each other have turned out to be different than they were presented as.

Jaime: They were dating, yet in reality they’re not dating. They’re friends, yet in reality they had only met each other twice.

What went through your minds when you found out you made the final three because Jen took a bathroom break?

Cara: We were sure we were last because when my food came out of the fryer — and I use that term loosely, we’re talking light frying at best — Jen was already hailing a cab. When I took my first bite they were in their cab. We were positive when we got to the mat that we were done. When Phil said we were third, you saw Jaime’s utter shock. You didn’t see when she collapsed. I was like, “Wow I just ate a lot of interesting and unique delicacies really fast.” We actually felt bad for Jen and Keisha. I know they weren’t feeling that sense of urgency that they might have if we were even eating at the same time. I don’t think anyone anticipated how quickly I would suck those little critters down.

Does it bother you that you never came in first in a leg and missed out on all those great prizes?

Jaime: That’s not true. We won jet skis for coming in to that pit stop first. It didn’t surprise me and Cara that they didn’t show that part because it made a lot of people happy to think that we didn’t get anything.

Kynt and Vyxsin are Fancast’s celebrity Amazing Race bloggers. They have this question for you: Girls! We loved your fiery spirits and never-say-die attitudes! We felt you guys were “cursed,” however, when it came to clueless taxi drivers! This past weekend, as you two rushed around at TarCon and the Race Finale parties, have the New York taxi drivers been any better for you? Has the curse finally lifted or are you still battling your drivers from the backseat?

Cara: No. We had a wonderful New York taxi experience.

The only other team of "friends" on this season was Christie & Jodi.

I still remember an insider video from episode 3, where Jaime & Cara talked about Christie & Jodi, so I wouldn't be surprised if they still held a grudge against them.

The only other possible "fake" teams are Preston & Jennifer and Amanda & Kris, because all of the other teams are either married or family.

This is the kind of stuff that drives me crazy year after year.

Victor and Tammy said in an interview

Quote
TVGuide.com: Were you certain you had it in the bag when you got into the cab?
Tammy: When we first got in, we were so shocked that we go from resigned to losing to going to thinking we might have a chance we might win. Victor did bring us back to reality by saying they're strong teams and anything could happen.
Victor: There was a hidden task that wasn't aired. We had to find this statue and it took us a little bit to find that, and it was a little bit of a drive to the golf course. We were cautiously optimistic.

So what was it, go directly to the pitstop after the surfboards or perfrom another task before the pitstop?   :duno: :meow: :groan: :umn:

Personally, I think it is unfair to compare D/K's second bite at the apple to J/C's or any other team's first bite at the apple. I think that teams learn a lot in doing the race, so I just think it is just an unfair comparison. Who's to say that if J/C came back for a 2nd All Star that they wouldnt win it all. Then they would have a better overall record than D/K. Again, that is just an unfair speculation to me. Obviously, we can all decide our own criteria for comparing teams from different races, but to me, there just isn't a way to realisticaly compare them. Each race has its own uniqueness and dynamics. It's like comparing apples and oranges to me.

I think they are looking at the original seasons and not at All Stars.

Pedaler,
I see no contradiction in that. Tammy/Victor did the statue task and then went straight to the golf course. Jaime/Cara would have received a "mercy finish clue" (so would Margie/Luke) if they finished the ROADBLOCK after Tammy/Victor arrived.

It seems that J/C seem to have a burr under their saddles over the Eliminaton Station videos. From their interviews, J/C said that, at the very start, they held back the police officer/law school student aspects of themselves and only promoted the "dumb cheerleaders" persona. Then they get mad at the ES videos when people expect to see them next and attribute their continuation in the race to "luck," and not talent and intelligence. Are the ES teams supposed to be clairvoyant?

I like J/C and liked watching them race, btw. They just seem a little sensitive to the scenario they set up.

Apskip, You may be right. If there was only one team involved I would agree.  However, I believe there is a small difference in prize money between 2nd and 3rd place, so I would hope that the producers would make the last two teams race it out.

As for Cara/Jaime vs Dustin/Kandice, this is another pet peeve of mind.  With the race design (plane, taxi, tasks..) and duration changing over the seasons, it's now more difficult to compare seasons.  Who knows, if this season had had more driving and self navigation, Car and Jaime may have had more higher leg finishes.  To me, Jaime seemed to be a very capable driver in the few opportunities that she had.
