03.09.2009 CBS WINS SUNDAY IN VIEWERS
"60 Minutes" and "The Amazing Race" Wins Their Time Periods in Viewers and Key Demos

"Cold Case" Posts Significant Across-the-Board Increases Over its Last First-Run Episode

"The Unit" Up From Last First Run Broadcast

CBS won Sunday in viewers led by time period winning performances from 60 MINUTES and THE AMAZING RACE 14 and significant growth by COLD CASE and THE UNIT over their last first-run broadcasts, according to Nielsen preliminary live plus same day ratings for March 8.

At 7:00 PM, 60 MINUTES was first in households (8.5/15), viewers (13.13m), adults 25-54 (3.1/09) and adults 18-49 (2.2/07).

At 8:00 PM, THE AMAZING RACE 14 was first in households (6.2/10), viewers (10.22m), adults 25-54 (3.7/09) and adults 18-49 (3.0/08).

At 9:00 PM, COLD CASE was second in households (7.7/12), viewers (12.56m), adults 25-54 (4.0/09) and averaged a 3.0/07 in adults 18-49.  Compared to the last first-run episode (on February 15, 2009), COLD CASE was up +15% in households (from 6.7/10), +21% in adults 25-54 (from 3.3/07), +25% in adults 18-49 (from 2.4/06) and added +1.67m viewers (from 10.89m, +16%).  This is COLD CASE's best delivery in both adults 25-54 and adults 18-49 since January 11, 2009 (delayed 8 minutes by football).

At 10:00 PM, THE UNIT was second in households (5.8/09) and viewers (9.43m), while averaging a 3.1/07 in adults 25-54 and 2.3/06 in adults 18-49.  Compared to the last first run episode (on February 15, 2009), THE UNIT was up +14% in households (from 5.1/09), +11% in adults 25-54 (from 2.8/07), +5% in adults 18-49 (from 2.2/06) and added +1.07m viewers (from 8.36m, +13%).  This is THE UNIT's best delivery in viewers, adults 25-54 and adults 18-49 since January 11, 2009 (delayed 8 minutes by football).

For the night, CBS was first in households (7.0/12), viewers (11.33m), second in adults 25-54 (3.5/09) and adults 18-49 (2.6/07).

Updated Sunday ratings will be available tomorrow.

After sleeping in (took a vacation day) I was pleasantly surprised how little we dropped from last week.

As Puddin mentioned

We did 10.22 million, 3.0 in the adult 18-49 demo, 3.7 in the adults 25-54, and a 2.1 in the adults 18-34.

We ended the night with what should be (based on half hour breakdowns) CBS strongest performer in 18-49 (Cold Case should be marginally lower based on half hours they had a 2.9 and 3.0, we had a 2.9 and 3.1), and the 18-34, Cold Case was next closest with a 1.8.  The only Demo we didn't win was the 25-54 (We placed 2nd to Cold Case).  But that demo per person generates less revenue then either the 18-34 or the most profitable 18-49.  So really good news.

Compared to the last two spring session (All Stars the only one on Sunday) and TAR 9 (which was on a Wednesday), we were up in total viewers (something we always want to see)

TAR 9 9.67 million viewers and a 4.0 (yes a 4.0) in the adult 18-49 demo
All Stars 10.00 million viewers and a 3.3 in adults 18-49

The only downside is the decline in the 18-49 demo.  Now I wouldn't really compare it to Season 9 (as Sunday is CBS oldest skewing night, so obviously we should do worse here), and since its been two years since All Stars being down .3 isn't bad (most shows are down that much plus being down 20% in total viewers.

Oh and last week against two shows that did 14 and 15 million in total viewers (nearly 4 and 5 million more then we did) and skew older.

We beat them in all three major demos.  Obviously in the 18-34, and in the 18-49.  But even with just 2/3rd of the total audience we beat them in the 25-54 demo.

I have to Ask how old is the typical viewer who watches 60 minutes I would guess 55 and older.  Yikes.

60 Minutes does skew older, mswood. I'll have to check the numbers, but the median age for CBS is somewhere around 46 to 47 with Fox around 42.

DVR Results for episode #2 are out.

This episode got in Final numbers a 7.813 million viewers (which counts all viewers who watched it live or before 2am, and they have counted this way since TAR has been on the air).

The number of people who actually watched it live (8pm to 9pm) were 6.528 million.

Another 1.984 million watched it using DVR (or VCR) within 7 days

So our live plus 7 total viewers was 8.512 million viewers

That is the 2nd highest increase TAR has ever had.  THe first was the Season 12 final episode (Which like this episode had a huge amount of competition, that time from the 40,000 million who watched the NFC championship game).  But that season was one of the most viewed seasons of TAR.

There are two charts.  The 1st is just the increase number of viewers.  On that chart we ranked 16th (Only 5 shows on CBS did better).  The 2nd charts the percentage increase in total viewers in those 7 days of DVR use.  We ranked 8th with 23.3% of our total audience being from DVRs.

I mentioned a report that was done for the fall part of the season that stated the percentage of viewers that used DVR's to watch a program the same day it aired.  The reason that is important is those are the only DVR results that actually get used in figuring out ad rates (we report those numbers as Fast Nationals and Final numbers).  Last Fall out of all programs Amazing Race averaged the 2nd highest percentage.

Well this week 64.8% of all the people who used DVR to watch the show watched it before the night was over.  For the week we had the 4th highest percentage for people who watched the show on their DVR before the night was over.  (Academy Awards #1, American Idol Results Show #2, Survivor #3).

THe studios love this.  Again DVR use after the first day brings in very little revenue.  It also gives an indicator to show loyalty.

Take two shows with the same number of viewers.  If they see that most of the DVR use for one of the shows happens 3 -4 days later, while the other is almost entirely that same day it aired.  They know that one has the more devoted fan base.

Meaning TAR has a loyal fan base. CBS knows this. I think this is good news for definitely one season. Two cycles could be in the cards as well.

Yeah I don't think we have any worries at all about getting at least one cycle.  And hell I can't believe how much we held this week.  If we can maintain over 10 million and stay near 3.0 in the demo, I think we are solid for two cycles.

Even with CBS in general doing fairly well this year.

Very true, mswood. Even against the Fox powerhouse of American Idol, CBS is holding its own. The Sunday night lineup is fairing well in the overall numbers, despite skewing older. The Monday night comedies are a good alternative to "Dancing with the non-Stars" and the network does well on other nights as well.

But as far as TAR is concerned, the fact that it's taking applications for 15 is a good sign. We should know at the upfronts whether CBS will give the show two cycles for the next season. If I were a betting man, I would say chances are pretty decent.

Updated with more info

Final numbers are out for this week.

TAR managed a 10.128 million total viewers and a 3.1 in adults 18-49 (the best for CBS that night) and a 6.1/10 Household 2.1 in adults 18-34(best for CBS that night), and a 3.8 in adults 25-54 (2nd best of the night for CBS, Cold Case got a 3.9).

We also won the full hour in total viewers, adults 18-49 (though Simpsons won its half hour), and adults 25-54.

We ranked 17th out of all CBS shows and 27th for all networks.

And here is the kicker.

We ranked higher in total viewers then every single NBC program (God NBC is in such pathetic shape).

We ranked higher then all but 5 programs on Fox (3 of them being American Idol).

We ranked higher then all but 6 programs on ABC (3 of them being the Bachelor, WTF!!!)

THats how well CBS is doing, in comparison to the other networks.

And CBS is in money problems, and they have cut the number of pilots that they were going to film (a good sign that much of CBS schedule is going to stay).

NBC should just go to basic cable, they would get about the same ratings. Looks like TAR is gaining strength as the season is going along. Next week is key. If the ratings go up for a third consecutive week, then CBS can say this cycle was a bona fide hit.

We just have to gain 4 million viewers to climb to the top 10 at least! Go TAR! :funny:

And i bet one day we'll see TAR at the top. Because i will and never get how will people rather watch superficial relationship unfold THAN travel around the world and watch how team's REAL relationship unfold.

CBS wins Sunday night in total viewers; "Kings" bombs on NBC
posted by halboedeker on Mar 16, 2009 11:47:03 AM

CBS was the most-watched network Sunday night, thanks to strong showings by "60 Minutes," "The Amazing Race," "Cold Case" and "The Unit."

Disney-owned ABC, however, was the favorite of the 18-to-49 age group, thanks primarily to "Desperate Housewives." CBS placed second in that count.

"Desperate Housewives" was the night's most-watched program with 14.4 million viewers. CBS' "Cold Case" ran second at 9 with 12.9 million viewers.

There was very bad news for NBC: The two-hour premiere of "Kings" tanked with just 6 million viewers.

Here are the winners in other time slots: At 7 p.m., "60 Minutes" delivered 12.6 million viewers to CBS.

At 8, "The Amazing Race" pulled in 10.4 million and outpaced ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" with 9.4 million.

At 10, "The Unit" enlisted 10.9 million for CBS. ABC's "Brothers & Sisters" was closed behind with 10.6 million. "Celebrity Apprentice" pulled 6.7 million to NBC.

For the night, CBS averaged 11.7 million. Here's how other broadcasters fared: ABC with 10.5 million, NBC with 5.7 million, Fox with 4.8 million and The CW with 1 million.

I know this is a week behind the US ratings - but here are the Canadian ratings for March 2 - 8, 2009

Can't wait for finals.

Fast Nationals (I types Fast Forward, duh..) as mentioned are
10.434 million
3.0 adults 18-49 (CBS top in the demo) tied with Extreme Homemaker
2.1 adults 18-34 (easily CBS best of the night) tied with Extreme Maker (which normally beats us here, so a tie is really good)
3.8 in adults 25-54 (Cold Case beat us with a 4.1)

But all around a solid consistent night.  Putting are viewer average up to 9.66 million.  I really hope we keep this up.  I want this season to be higher rated then the fall (almost never happens), and higher then the last spring cycle (we are very, very close right now).

Updated Finals are out

10.327 million viewers (time period winner)
3.1 adults 18-49 (time period winner and CBS highest performance of the night)
2.1 adults 18-34 (CBS highest performance of the night)
3.9 adults 25-54 (CBS 2nd Highest performance of the night Cold Case ended with a 4.0)

Ranked 26th out of all shows in total viewers (14th for CBS)
Ranked 28th out of all shows in the critical 18-49 demo (9th for CBS, and thats always good news).
