It's possible, even probable. Entry vehicles have been used in the past for show, rather than actual transport; there's no reason this season shouldn't be any different than TAR7 (if you look closely at the Queen Mary footage, you'll see most of the teams jumping out of the same helo).

I've taken a few "flights" on the paragliding sim trying to match the cap below. (It's a fun time-waster; go here, click on a particular field, and choose "Fly on this site," which opens the GE flight sim). The trouble is, it looks too flat to be Interlaken (or Locarno, for that matter).

Fun!

But I can't figure out why we would have a paraglide AND a bungee all at the same time? COULD this be in CA? :o

I don't think so. I would lean towards Paragliding being a Detour Choice and bungee jumping being either a detour choice or an additional task  :yess:

Take a look at possible Paragliding spots with Google Maps or Earth etc...Al Fiume offers Paragliding and so does another place I dont wish to say!  :neener:

I agree, clearly the Bungee is a Roadblock, red clue card, and the gliding looks like a duo of racers.
I was imagining Slowhatch and I Paragliding in Interlaken together , I was the one with the red chute!
.....ETA: and it was a blast!

And looky here! Madonna del Sasso could be the town seen in the paragliding photo though I doubt it and the paragliding company could be that of Cardada Impianti Turistici SA www.paragliding-ticino.ch. What do yall think. I dont think so but just puttin my 2 cents in  :yess:

If it is fermin Point, then how about a helicopter flight from catalina to LAX? That would go right by it.

One more thing about this shot is that if it is Fermin Point then it was taken really late in the day.  Something like 2 to 3 pm.  Too late for a typical TAR start time.

This shot was taken between 2:14 and 2:53 pm (assumes October 31st)

Might be an after-shot because as you say 2-3 pm is way too late for a start.

Chateau d, I am going to respectfully disagree with your determination that this is Pt. Fermin. Where is the lighthouse on the end of the point? Where are the trees that are right behind the lighthouse? And most of all, where are all the houses that are across the street from the lighthouse? The housing density does not compare to Pt. Fermin and San Pedro. This is a very barren promontory of land. Also, if this is Pt. Fermin, where is the jetty that protects the harbor of Long Beach?

What is the promontory in the background? There is nothing that close to Pt Fermin to the north or west, till you get to the old Marineland. I thought at first maybe this was Pt Vincente, the far promontory, in Palos Verdes. So I tried to figure out where the helicopter had to be to make the shot and I couldn't get any reasonable angle.

To me, the lack of housing density just precludes this to be Pt. Fermin or anywhere UP the coast from there. If you look at that Google Earth shot you posted, it is full of houses.

One other question I have, is the two Sea Stallon helicopters in the promo. That helicopter will hold 37 fully geared up marines. Without gear, it will hold 55 people. Even if all 11 teams and their camera crews were onboard....one helicopter would be enough. If it wasn't for the picture of the one team, in  helicopter gear, I would almost think it was stock footage of flying helicopters. Now that you put a time of day on it, it makes even less sense. If in fact it is some place farther south or east down the coast or on Catalina Island, the time of the photo wouldn't vary all that much. I would think at that time of day, teams should be at the airport or maybe even in the air already on the way to Europe. I haven't gone back to check on Apskip's flight timetables from LAX, but sure seems to late in the day to be flying around in helicopters to me.

I don't want to be a pest about this but it really is the Portuguese bend area. First, if you back up the sequence to the first frame you can see the second promontory (called Inspiration Point). Second, compare three things:
  • The small tree at the end of the promontory (seen here from a different angle)
  • The small bush 2/3 up the strata
  • The dirt area shaped like a breaking wave
Also, I drive by the area at least once a week.  :-[
Since the producers seem stuck on SoCal, two hi-res resources you can bookmark are the Coastal Records Project and SoCal Aerial Photography from the Geology dept. at CSULB (which provided the source photo).
What does it mean? I still think it means zip, just a pretty section of coastline they wanted to shoot to help give the illusion that teams are actually transported from someplace to Phil.

??? I'm confused. Where does Edwards come in? The Bell helos in TAR7 flew around the Palos Verdes peninsula, and the promo caps look similar (compare with the Portuguese Bend area). But I haven't seen an assembly point. Producers like to drop the racers out of the sky, then show the bio clips.

Darn, HOW did I miss this?  Thank you Slowhatch, looks good to me!

Sigh, I want to drive along there.....

ok, now I agree with slowhatch.

regardless....the palos verdes peninsula or Pt. Fermin in San Pedro, it's all  much more north of Los Alamitos AF base.

the footage looks more and more like extra aerial footage shot just for show.
