peach, you said
Quote
Teams were stuck on long local bus rides, had long tasks in each place, and were exhausted from that, and I certainly never ever missed any airport drama.
I find long bus rides (of the 10+ hour variety, certainly not local) to be the most boring part of Amazing Races that have them. Witness the ride from Bangkok to Chiang Mai in Episode 1 of ARA3.  Contrast that with long train rides. Because of the different interior layout of trains vs. buses, train rides allow teams to socialize and "mingle". Airplane flights are quite boring, but the drama at the travel agent or the airline reservations agent can make that the most compelling drama of the three modes of transportation, although frequently it too is boring.

walkingpneumonia,
I appreciate the research you have done on the weather in the correct time frame. Your airline information needs a bit of updating. There are no direct flights form Irkutsk to Bangkok, nor are there any from Novosibirsk. Those cities, which I agree with you are probably the most logical of those on my list above, require complex flight combinations involving 2 or more airlines and flights from Novosibirsk and 3 or more airlines and flights from Irkutsk to reach Bangkok. The other Siberian cities would probably be the same, although I have not checked them. None of those places will have a direct flight to Bangkok. There just isn't the combination of income and demand to support that.
According to this: http://www.s7.ru/en/flight_info/our_cities/index.html S7 flies from Irkutsk and Novosibirsk to Bangkok - has this flight been discontinued? Its only once a week (Mondays) from Irkutsk so its probably not practical for TAR purposes - but its 3 times a week from Novosibirsk.

My airline information source requires specification of specific dates, not a range, so I did miss the information you have develoepd.  I stand corrected. Your information about the Siberian Airlines flight Novosibirsk to Bangkok is right, walkingpneumonia. There are 3 flights a week at very odd hours:

Thursdays and Sundays 0205 1020
Fridays 0330 1135

Now, the date of travel would have been Nov. 16, a Monday, or possibly Nov. 15, a Sunday, so we cannot rule it out. However, Sunday would have them pausing for almost 24 hours(although maybe there was a Bangkok leg slipped in there). The WRP coordination to make sure teams could make one of these flights would have been massive.

From Irkutsk to Bankgkok your information that there is one direct flights is correct. The only flight I find to Bangkok starts on a Monday (such as Nov. 16) at 505 and arrives Bangkok at 1105. That is likely to be OK.  We need more information about when things happened in Phuket to be sure.

With what I know I actually believe that AR14 did use one of those flights. They are too weird for it to be just random. See what I am about to write about Siberia.

I have a hunch and I think it is the right time to reveal it. The centerpiece of going to Siberia should be - a ride on the fabled TransSiberianExpress, of course. In order to do that you have to have a segment that is short enough to make sense. There is a segment from Novosibirsk that will stop in Krasnoyarsk. I cannot obtain the schedule because the very-hard-to-work-with timetable does not accept the word "Krasnoyarsk", which should be valid. However, I know from the map that that is a longish segment. The other segment worth looking at is Irkutsk to Ulan Ude or the reverse. I am shocked by the fact that there are 11 daily trips in the eastward direction. I have to assume that there are approximately the same westbound. The length of that trip varies form 7 hours to 13 hours.

What I see as possible is this:
1. fly into Siberia to Ulan-Ude and have a leg there arriving probably Nov. 10
2. while there there was a heavy snowstorm that cause WRP production to call a 24 hour halt
3. the departure from Ulan-Ude would on Nov. 13
4. teams would then get one of the westbound trains from Ulan-Ude to Irkutsk, arriving same day
5. there would be a leg in the Irkutsk area, the entry point to Lake Baikal
6. after what may have been an extended pit stop, teams are ready to depart before Monday Nov. 17 on the Siberian Airlines flight at 505am, arriving Bangkok at 1105am (which walkingpneumonia discovered when I missed it). However, after a date mistake was pointed out to me, it is clear that this is too late for the Phuket sightings on the 16th

The Trans-Siberian Express train schedule westbound from Ulan-Ude to Irkutsk is:
Depart Arrive Duration
05:00 12:51  07:51
05:31 12:26  06:55
09:27 19:50  10:23
09:50  07:01  07:11
11:10  22:45  11:35
11:53  19:11  07:18
12:58  20:13  07:15
18:00  02:20  08:20
21:02  04:30  07:28

Just so the information is captured here, this is the schedule westbound from Krasnojarsk(I found it by altering its spelling) to Novosibirsk:

00:57  14:09  13:12
04:10  16:01  11:51
04:25  20:38  16:13
05:39  17:44  12:05
05:59  20:06  14:07
06:52  18:51  11:59
07:08  20:23  13:15
07:18  22:52  15:34
08:05  21:24  13:19

So, what do you think of that hypothesis?

EDITOR'S NOTE - the above logic disnitegrates when tehre is an error of one day due to Monday being the only day of the week for the key flight to Bangkok. This means that I need to redo the logic to focus on Krasnojarsk and Novosibirsk instead of Ulan Ude and Irkutsk. The concept of using the TransSiberian Express is intact. I am going to start fresh in a new posting.

I really like this Siberian itinerary - should make great TV.  :yess:

I especially like that potentially teams have to read a train schedule in Russian in order to make the correct decision about which train to take - some trains that depart later arrive earlier at the destination, probably because they make fewer stops on the way.

This hypothesis replaces the one above which proved to have a faulty date which scuttled the rationale for it.

Here is the proposed sequence events:
1. Departure from Bucharest Romania flying to Krasnojarsk, Russia probably departing Sunday Nov.9
Flight combinations choices are:
TK1444  OTP IST  1050 1215  connecting to  TK1415  IST SVO  1335 1740  connecting to  SU779  SVO KJA 2255 0540+1
9U9862  OTP KIV 1240 1350  connecting to  S7158   KIV DME  1605 1850  connecting to  S7071  DME KJA 2220 0645+1
RO343  OTP VIE 1610 1655  connecting to  FV204  VIE LED  1750 2235  connecting to  FV577 LED KJA  0050+1 0930+1
2. Leg 5 tasks in the region around Krasnoyarsk
3. Delay of 24 hours due to snowstorm?
4. start pit stop in Krasnojarsk on Nov. 12; release from it early on Nov. 13
5. TransSiberian Express train travel on Nov. 13 from Krasnojarsk to Novosibirsk (see below for details)
6. Arrival either late on Nov. 13 or early on 14th
7. tasks in Novosiobirsk on nov. 14
8. Begin extended 36 hour pit stop
9. Release around midnight becoming Nov. 16
10. Early on Nov. 16 fly Novosibirsk to Bangkok, S7789 0205 1020

Krasnojarsk to Novosibirsk Trans-Siberian Express Schedules
Depart Arrive Duration
00:57 14:09  13:12
05:39 17:44  12:05

If anything, airport drama has already decreased to an unacceptable low. :(
From the recap point of view, airport drama is never fun and decreasing it is welcomed at this end. Airport drama to me has become so boring that you can skip that part of the show and not miss anything.

Hi guys. :waves:

You guys have done an incredible job with these spoilers. I'm from Australia, and I haven't seen anything TAR-related here' since TARA1. Can't wait until this season hits the air. I'm also Armenian by nationality, and I saw that Armenia was speculated as a destination earlier. Any new news about that?

Great job detectives! :hearts:

I've been reading through this forum, and I apologise if this information is already on here, but I should mention it in any case:

The father/son team that has been sighted in Phuket could possibly be Mel White and Mike White, the latter of which wrote the movie "The School Of Rock". They are also both gay. This information comes from tvsquad.com, and I should point out that it is speculation. :duno:

And once again, I apologise if that was already on here, but I did not see anything. :ascared

Because of the TAR14 stuff, I was curious about Destination Unknown and kept track of the videos. Phil was phoning it in of course, but I looked to see if it was all prepared on the same day. So far, it seems that way: the clothes, the lighting (slightly above and to his left) and the backdrop are the same.

Heres the tv guide quip ..

Phil infront of a Jet? Engine. Maybe Los Alamitos Airfield isn't too far off the mark?

Same clothes. Hmm. Same day? Is it Boeing 757 engine? Where was the photo shoot? Airplane hangar?

:waves: 757 is a good guess, as good as any: the PW2000 series has a fan diameter of 78 inches (not enough for a match, but it's similar). The trouble is, there's no more info from the photo; it could be in a museum for all we know.
