Episode 5 speculation starts HERE .

Thanks to banzai for bringing us this and to nadlamok for sharing.

for EP. 5
- still in taiwan
- a fast forward is set to appear.
- play a movie challenge. probably a road block.
- coal mining task
- one team get so tired that they took time to sleep instead. this is where allan was shown knocking on one of the cars.
- intense episode with accident, police involvements and screaming matches.

So we believe that Leg 5 continues in Taiwan.

Leg 4 may be an extended pitstop based on Allen Wu's blog comment here:

Even though it's always tough to see another team go, I could still put on a smile cuz we could all now get some much-needed rest...

And with this next pit stop lasting over fifteen hours, I was definitely going to need every single minute of our short rest before our call time.

Possibilities:

Sogo mall, perhaps in error, lol? Or perhaps the FF? or the Bravia store?

Sony Bravia TV task/clue perhaps at the Sony store in Taipei 101? or is it in that mall? ???

Taiwan Coal Mine Museum,  Pingsi.  Thanks to puddin!
http://www.coalminemuseum.idv.tw/

Maybe movie making ??
http://traveling.network.com.tw/Taiwan/point/187.html

car trouble, police get involved?

FF?

One team chooses to sleep? Mai and Oliver?? Allen comes knocking....

I'll bet AXN is getting anxious...they have maybe wanted a NEL before now but teams keep quitting!  :res:

Can't wait!! :jumpy: :jumpy:

I see another way to phrase that: "they have wanted a 36 Hour Extended Pitstop before now...". A NEL does nothing different for teams wanting to rest their tired bodies than an elimination would. Only an extended pitstop will accomplish that. A pitstop of 15 hours does that acoomplish much.

Ida and Tania leaves at 2pm

Make their way to the Sony style store in new Sogo department store, find among many discs for a correct disc.

Vince and Sam leaves at 2.17pm

Oliver and Mai leaves at 2.53pm

Henry and Bernie leaves at 2.55pm

Ad and Fuzzie leaves at 2.56pm

Vince and Sam finds the correct disc first.

Fast Foward! Each team member must get a tattoo permanently inked on their bodies...Sam and Vince goes for it.

Ad and Fuzzie next to find the disc

Drive to the New Pingshi coal mine.

Geoff and Tisha leaves at 3.54pm

Pitstop:Astronomical museum

Sam and Vince first! Reward, a 3D 2N Ultimate golf resort in Thailand worth $3000.

Roadblock at the coal mine, dig among coal for a souvenir. Henry and Fuzzie attempts.

Oliver and Mai still at the Sony shop and still can't find the disc, Mai suggests to quit.

Detour, Pick or Pail.

Pick, pick 3 soft toys out of a game machine.

Pail, drive to a temple and deliver a bucket of water up the hill to a monk.

After the detour, the clue instructs them to the pitstop.

Henry and Bernie second.

AD and Fuzzie third.

Henry and Bernie has toys for Allan!

Mai and Oliver can't find the correct disc but since the shop is closing they get the clue without penalty.

Ida and Tania chooses Pail, Geoff and Tisha chooses Pick.

Mai and Oliver lost in the streets, they decide to sleep in the car.

Geoff and Tisha fourth.

Ida and Tania fifth.

Mai and Oliver eliminated in the morning from their car.

Current Standings:

Sam/Vince check in at Pit Stop and win a trip to a golf resort in Thailand
Henry/Bernie complete Roadblock at Shifen Coal Mine, currently in 2nd heading to Detour
AD/Fuzzie at needle-in-haystack Roadblock at 3rd
Ida/Tania just arriving at Roadblock in 4th
Geoff/Tisha lost somewhere
Mai/Oliver look like they're giving up at Sony

Yet another elimination round! Holy s---!

Surprisingly, Geoff was calmer, more polite and playing smarter in this episode. I think it was the threat of losing Tisha that kept him in line.

Mai and Oliver eliminated in the morning from their car.
The previews kind of spoiled this for us. No reason for Allan to knock on the window of a car unless it's either an Hours of Operation or a "field" elimination" or going to the field to eliminate a team. But Mai & Oliver kind of put themselves behind the 8 ball from what I have read in this thread.

They lost a lot of time finding the correct disc at the Sony Bravia shop, probably should have quit and taken the 4 hours penalty. Apparently Oliver said that Geoff messed up the discs and they had to go through the pile again. Its quite bad they put a random task at the start of the leg, it doesn't encourage the teams at all.

I personally found Oliver's fingerpointing ridiculously immature.

They all had access to the discs. There was no system that had to be followed by anybody. So Oliver chose to organize his choices a certain way; Geoff chose to look for discs without fingerprints. To make it sound like Geoff deliberately sabotaged him was just plain childish.

Good riddance, Oliver. Now, I know you and Mai are perfect for each other.

do you think there are only 6 correct discs? that would've sucked for oliver and mai. sam and vince got paid by lady luck after blurting out the location of the clue at the museum on the previous leg.

calv_10, I have taken a look at the probabilities and estimated times inolved and I conclude that it was only 6 discs. Here is how it worked:

Assume that you have 6 good discs out of the 1000 stated and also that it takes 10 seconds on average for a try. The first to finish will do so at an average maximum time of 167 minutes and average of 83 minutes based on 0.6%(6/1000) probability per try. Each good disc when found has to be removed and not returned. The second to finish will do so at an average max. of 200 minutes and average of 100 minutes based on 0.50% probability (5/999) per try. The third to finish will do so at an average of 250 minutes average max. and average of 125 minutes based on 0.40%(4/998).  The fourth to finish will do so at an average max. of 333 minutes average max. and average of 167 minutes based on 0.301%(3/997). The fifth to finish will do so at an average max. of 214 minutes and average of 107 minutes based on 0.201% (2/996). The final team to finish needs an average max. of 499 minutes and average of 250 minutes based on 0.101%(1/995). The last team will take on average 3 times what the first team does. It appears that the last team was moving very slowly with a reported 167 videos checked in what must have been close to 5 hours.

Teams do not know that a random event is coming. If they did they would make a maximum effort to get there at the front of the pack.

EDITOR's NOTE: I had the probabilities as shown above originally, but changed them. Then I decided that the original ones were correct and changed them back.

I have this feeling that teams should be careful with those medals and possibly also their toys. The final challenge before the Finish Line can be questions relating to such things.

This is not just an episode 5 issue although this was rampant in today's episode. I refer to hiring taxis to follow. The amount of money teams had did not allow them to spend 1100 to 1200 New Taiwanese Dollars (@30NTD/USD from May 2008 = 36.7 to 40 USD) to get to Shengkeng. However, what they had was sufficient to allow taxi following all over Taipei. I detest seeing it, as it distorts the intent of finding places on their own and is bad for viewers. I am still waiting for both Bertram van Munster and Michael McKay to either ban this practice or make sure team do not have enough money to do it.

i agree with you on this one. everybody's resulting to just hiring taxis to follow that it's getting kinda boring. it would be nice if TARA could just provide them identical maps that can take them to their destinations whenever visiting a new country. those with good navigation skills will do well.

thanks for the analysis on the discs. geoff and tisha were really lucky. checking for fingerprints was a good call.

Allan Wu gave us some clues but we didn't get it. That photo was one of the Detour.

Maybe "Back to Taiwan" also means back to Taipei. Two pitstops in the same city.  :duno:

Oh, and it took me about 50 seconds to load, play, and unload a DVD. That's 1000 minutes for 1000 discs. Hmm.  :groan: (:;)

banzai, that is of course 6 times my estimate. With the area they were testing in totally isolated away from the public, Michael McKay could have brought in units that open/close and play much quicker than one a minute, knowing that watching teams run CDs is about the most boring task possible. Mine took slightly over 10 seconds from a CD on a spindle. If you run the numbers, the slowest team performance was at a rate about three times as fast as your esimate.

An ok episode. I'm not that much of a fan of those pure luck challenges, as they are, as someone else wrote, not that interesting to watch and in the worst case can litereally take all day (as we could see with Mai and Oliver). And this leg even had 2 challenges that had a strong luck components, the dig for the souvenir one was way too alike to the BR-Disc one.
I can understand the need to cram as much as product placement into it, and challenges are a "natural" way to do it (hey, they haven't even used those obnoxious stickers in the provided car's windows they had in season 2), but if it's a "make or break" challenge early in the race (leg-wise) I regard it as a little unfair. They simply could've not used 1000 but maybe 100 or 200, which would've shortened the maximum time needed for the challenge.

I also regard tatooing as a rather unfair challenge, as it obviously stays for you after the race, and it wasn't even logically put in. It was done way better in TAR 12, where the clue read something about "local art" and the tattoo were two F's for fast forward. No clue how true the local art thing is, but it provided a tie to the location (as do the "local delicatessen" challenges which are often used for the fast forward). Here it was just: Go tattoo yourself, mentioned already in the clue, so there was no real elemet of surprise. It's clear that the producers don't want the "eat 1kg of bugs" or "take a bungee jump" challenges as fast foward, as they've been used too often, but tattooing s just taking it too far for me. I don't know what they could use as "extreme" challenges otherwise, maybe just some intense labor task or something like that (I personally would like to see a "spend 2mins with a martial artist in the ring" challenge, but it looks like we'll get to see that in TAR 13 Ep 3 :meow:)

It's going to be interesting how the next leg will be, seeing that Sam&Vince seem to be like 10hours+ in front. I guess there will be a delay the start the next leg when they wait for an airplane etc, seeing that Taiwan is probably not big enough to warrant 2 legs (but then, I haven't looked at the spoiler thread, and there wasn't a preview broadcasted either)

Flights from Taipei to Hong Kong start at about 630am. Vince and Sam would be released at 4am and would make that first flight CX463 0625 0800. The other teams would be released between about noon and 2pm and could be on any of these flights:

CX511 1315 1500
CI679 1330 1575
BR855 1400 1540
CX565 1410 1555
CI673 1425 1510
KA481 1445 1630

That gives Vince and Sam a 7 hour lead on the next closest team. There must be a major hours of operation that stops them at maybe 5pm to 7pm and allows all the other teams to catch.
