Amazing Race leg money
« on: December 21, 2009, 11:03:48 PM »
I don't know how the teams travel in so many cabs during the length of the race and still have enough money to survive?

I know it will be different in each country but my travel experience has discovered the Taxis are expensive!

I know there are the odd team that gets into trouble with limited cash in some seasons, but the majority cruise by driving over 100kms in some legs and have cash left over?

Does anyone know if they get extra assistance with money during the race? Surely meals must be payed for right?

Nope. No food, no water, no nothing, except the rather sparse rations at Pitstops. Many times they have to decide re eating or having enough to get a room, or pay a taxi.

BUT, they do beg in airports...I think some dude gave Sarah $500!! So they can get extra along the way.

So at the end of the leg they don't get put up in a hotel and given dinner???

And I think I read somewhere ages ago, they have to stop to exchange their US currency. Is that right?

They get put up...might be in a tent, or a flea bag hotel, or a great hotel...it varies. And yes they get a meal, but the spreads from the earlier seasons are no more from what I hear. As the race progresses, I have heard that they get pretty stingy with the food...so as to keep everyone stressed.

Peach, you mentioned Sarah got $500. Which Sarah? I'm thinking Peter & Sarah (for obvious reasons) but can you please confirm. Thanks! :jam:

I don't think they have to exchange all of it; however they need something because many places only accept US currency. It does present an interesting dilemma - exchange everything and have to rely on shaky exchange rates, or keep some USD and risk not being able to pay for something (or get overcharged in the process). The actual process isn't that hard since most teams will just exchange it at an airport while waiting for a flight.

I recall that Jonathan garnered a large sum of money during his race as well. I'm sure that helped their team a lot.

By request, I should add that teams are (we believe) prohibited from begging in USA airports.

Do you know when this rule came into effect, Peach? I remember Heather & Eve begging and making some cash in TAR3.

In season 10 we see that Rob & Kimberly saved money by bringing food (things like donuts, muffins, ect) from the Pit Stop and using that to eat during the leg.  Thus saving some of their provided funds.

As for begging, some teams manage this exceptionally well, with several teams having no problem with getting hundreds and hundreds of dollars.

Teams will often beg for things besides money as people have bought them, books, maps, snacks, restaurant food, entry tickets, ect.  In many ways the begging really has gotten way out of hand.  As I hate that really from season 10 on, some teams can literally pay cabs to escort them through vast sections of the race (and yeah that isn't cheap,s o imagine how much begging that takes).  Of course lately that hasn't been nearly as big of factor since they almost never drive themselves anymore (HATE that).

They don't drive anymore because they're staying in the city. Rental cars are quite expensive.
Of course, the teams don't bother to take public transport.

Begging should be prohibited.

While it is true that teams are staying closer to the city they are going to (there are exceptions of course), but in earlier seasons teams would (usually for two or so legs at least) drive from the pit Stop to the next country (or destination city if in the same country).  That rarely happens now (though it still does).  I think on this issue it is a choice made by production to keep a tight race (save money by finishing in 3 weeks), as planes (usually) keep teams much closer then how teams can really spread out driving long distance.
