Technical note (I don't know where else it would go, Peach can erase it if she wants):
Google Earth 4.3 is out, with some improvements including a shadow-maker and some better (IMO) navigation controls. And the fog has lifted in many places of the world  :spy:: you can see the maritime terminal at Salvador and some might remember the time we spent looking for the statue at Batu Caves.

Cool, I had seen that the fog had lifted in Salvador but I forgot to check Batu.

I don't know how useful the shadow thing is.  So far, to me, it just seems like a big dimmer switch controlled by Lat & Long.

I have a new trick up my sleeve for high accuracy sun-shadow timing.  It's labor intensive but it will allow time estimates to be made with shots I would have previously left alone.  I hope to get it streamlined down a little before the show starts.

Slowhatch

Thanks for the info about the update.  I don't use it often, but on occasion I like to follow where they travel.

I can't wait to see the results of your shadow analysis  Up its not to much extra work (but do it anyway).

It was born out of a Miss Allie situation.

This is for TARA3:
Mapjack is competing with Google in the street-view business; most of their maps are for NoCal, but if you select Chiang Mai from the drop-down box you can get some good ground-level photos (if it turns out we need them).

The wiki article that Boingo mentioned links to an interesting site, Kartametro. The scope is limited of course, but it's still useful if you need to cross-reference something with a metro station. (click on the map icon for the interactive system map)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Do the distances on the route so far add up to ~40000 miles? If it's even close, then Africa would be out - it'd be a big shlep from anywhere along the current route (i guess it would be delhi/dubai if anything). I'm inclined to agree that NZ is the "fifth continent"!!

i brought this over from the tar13 timeline spec thread.. even though i absolutely believe y'all about not trusting BVM's geographic accuracy, i wanted to find a quick way to estimate distances from Google Maps and I found a nice little tool at Wisgary.com
http://www.wisgary.com/maps/
this is great - you just click on any 2 points and hit calculate distance. you can move around one of the markers and it updates.
Using this I estimated the current distance travelled as per TAR13 specs to be about 38500 miles, so not too far off the 40K quoted, esp if you include one more destination after delhi/dubai (kazakhstan? any others?).  anywhere in africa other than egypt would be a lot more than this  :badhorse:  :groan:   just for fun i did TAR12 route and got 28600 miles, not too far from the 30K quoted!
for more accurate distance calcs i like http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/distance.html
i'm sure resident cartographers here like apskip know these sites.  how about a real fun geography one - i can spend hours on this - it's a blast!!! http://www.news.com.au/perthnow/index/1,21581,5015022,00.html

Getting close! Leaving out the two/three legs between Delhi and Moscow we're at 36402 miles, which leaves a swathe through Central Asia, the northeastern coast of Africa and Europe if 40000 miles holds.

Thanks Neobie  :hearts:

That map makes it really clear for geographical dunces like me to actually visualise the possible range which the mystery legs probably lie in.

Hmm... just an extension of Sunnyca's analysis... TK/Rachel had a "30 000 mile" journey as announced by Phil; just connecting the major cities they went through gives us 28 582 miles.

TAR 12 Announced: 30000 miles; TK/Rachel 28582 miles
TAR 11 Announced: 45000 miles; Eric/Danielle: 41967 miles
TAR 10 Announced: 40000 miles; James/Tyler: 42769 miles

I am happy we have a 40,000 mileracer this time

I'm hoping for something closer to 70,000 miles and six continents again. But I'm glad it's finally getting longer instead of shorter.

Season 12 just had a pathetic route and reducing the number of legs didn't help.
