Jeff Probst talks about next 'Survivor' location
May 12, 2008, 02:10 AM | by Dalton Ross

Categories: TV Biz

With Survivor: Micronesia in the books, the reality franchise is now gearing up for season 17 by going back to Africa. The show will be setting up shop on the continent’s west coast in the country of Gabon. “I didn’t know where it was,” confesses host Jeff Probst. “I had to look it up on a map. It is probably the most remote place we have ever gone.” What does that mean in terms of wildlife? “We don’t know,” Probst says. “No one’s really ever hung out there. We’re going to leave a boma with some sticks and stuff, and the contestants will be given instructions that they need to finish it since we’re a little concerned because it’s so unknown. In Kenya [season 3], we had armed guards everywhere so that if something did happen, we could take care of it. We’re not gonna have that because they’re telling us it is so remote and will probably be remote forever. But a gorilla could wander into camp.” (You mean, Joel from Micronesia?)

Season 17 marks another big change for Survivor in that it will be the first time the show has been shot in high definition. “Survivor is one of those shows that you want to see in HD,” says Probst, while noting that the scenery will look a lot more stunning than the stranded contestants, “People with bug bites are gonna look worse, people that don’t have great bodies are gonna look worse, and people who are really attractive are probably gonna look… worse.” And what about you, Jeff? “I went through every scenario: Is there any way I can wear makeup? Is there any way I could not shoot in the middle of the day? And the answers are all no. I’ve just come to terms with it.”

Survivor: Gabon—Earth’s Last Eden begins filming in late June and will air in September on CBS.

Update: Survivor Gabon

CBS is sticking with tradition, launching the lion's share of its fall sked during fall premiere week - with a few, election-related exceptions.
With a presidential debate scheduled for Friday, Sept. 26, the net is delaying its Friday bows until Oct. 3. Also, with a vice presidential debate lined up for Thursday, Oct. 2, the Eye is bowing that night's lineup out of pattern.

As a result, "Survivor: Gabon" will bow prior to premier week, on Sept. 18, while the rest of its Thursday sked - including "CSI" and newcomer "Eleventh Hour" - will wait until Oct. 9.

Other than that, the roll-out is pretty elementary. Monday's lineup returns Sept. 22 (including the series bow of new laffer "Worst Week"), Tuesday is back Sept. 23 (including newcomer "The Mentalist"), Wednesday bows Sept. 24 (with new sitcom "Project Gary"), while Saturday and Sunday arrive on Sept. 27 and 28, respectively.

The Oct. 3 return of Friday ight includes new hour-long "The Ex-List."

The early bow of "Survivor," which is back with its 17th cycle, reps the seventh consecutive year CBS has launched the franchise a week prior to the start of the TV season. Early launch allows "Survivor" to air two weeks in a row before the debate pre-emption.

Cleaning out my inbox  and found this interesting article from a dream team member...

Quote
Hundgen said he has no problem signing the show's strict confidentiality agreements and is content not sharing spoilers with anyone, including family members. But people who watch the televised version of the show with him get a different kind of insight: "I feel like they're trying to watch the show, and every time something comes on, I go, 'Oh! I helped build that.' "

As of Wednesday, Hundgen said he still didn't know where he would be lodging in Gabon, an African country bordering the Atlantic Ocean at the equator. In China and Palau, he stayed in hotels, but there's a chance he might be camping outside for the show's 17th season.

"They've had to do that before in Fiji, and they said that wasn't too good," he said. "But I think I'll be all right."
