Oh yeah. I forgot. They said something about shorter time and shorter resting periods. So we are down to 11 episodes?

Bringing this over from Media because it might answer you better, banzai?

I think that we can use my friend probability and not the automatic "if it's the first leg in Amazing Race Asia, then it must be a NEL" that I believe no longer applies. There are 10 teams and let us assume 11 legs(although we have no clue right now how many there were). That says there are 3 NELs/TBCs and 7 elimination points and 1 race to the Finish Line. That gives us a 7/10 = 70% probability of a pitstop leg and a 30% probability of a NEL/TBC each leg up to the last one. As you actually experience pitstops and NEL/TBC legs, those probablities will change until the 10th leg becomes 100% of either a pitstop leg or a NEL/TBC leg.

This shot was taken between 6:03 and 6:13 pm (assumes May 20th).  see correction below

Apologies to Banzai, your azimuth is right but the solar altitude is really low.  See how the tree  on the west (not shown) shades the tree on the east.

Thanks Chateau!  :yess:

But boy does that complicate stuff....I thought we had a time for bug eating of around 2 from somewhere?? Andrew I think?  And if sunset was around 630 then that explains the in the dark shots but not the teams on Khao San Rd in the light.

I'll need to recheck all our communications about time I guess.... :groan:

Chateau, we have a serious conflict on timing if you are correct on the start line. Teams were sighted on Khao San Road in Bangkok around 2pm on May 20. If the race hasn't started yet, how is that possible? The only explanation I can offer is that the race may have started after 6pm on May 19, as I trust your time range estimates.

May 20?
May19?

My shadow analysis would never be able to distinguish them.  But that start was def at the end of the day.  See  the long shadows.  The host is standing in a wide open area yet he is in shade.  Is  TARA so unlike TAR?  Do they start and do tasks in the same city?  Would they have them start and then have them bed down for night?

I'll have to see those Khao San Road shots and see if I can get a time from them.  Anybody have a link?

 :waves: right here

Just heard from Mrs Shrek's blogger who was kind enough to tell us this: :hearts:

Quote
I managed to get a couple pictures until they told me not to.  I cant remember the exact day but around the 20th or 21st I'd say. I saw them eating scorpions and some other sort of bug and puking them up. There were 2 asian teams I think. Also one girl threw up and another contestant said "Miss India Everyone!" I heard them reading a clue and it was in English. There was a father and son I believe who looked east indian. Everyone I heard talk sounded like they had American accents.

ask me anymore questions i'll try to help. expect the pictures in a few days

What else would we like to know? ???

Thanks Chateau.
In that case, all of these stuffs are just one episode.
Sunset is around 6:39PM.

After the bug eating task, they go to this clue box and grab a yellow bag.

Do a matching item task and grab a bus ticket.

Take a bus to Chiang Mai. It's about 8-9 hours by bus from Bangkok.

The detour is to mow the lawn or off-road racing.
The Roadblock is a mystery.

Pitstop is in the Royal Flora Garden.

Voila.  :wohoo:

The link provided by puddin above is titled 19 May. Also, this blog does not have any reference to what time of day photographer Andrew Russell ran into the Amazing Race Asia in the Khao San Road area. It could be any hour of the day, but I will be interested to see what Chateau's analysis of the ARA picture shows.

The blog states that one of the days he is in Bangkok is a holiday. The only possible holiday that could be was Visakabucha day, which happens on a Sunday and the following Monday is also a public holiday. The applicable Sunday would be May 18 and Monday would be May 19. I was hoping that this would be conclusive on what date the start of the race would, but obviously it isn't.

Bingo!

http://www.wunderground.com/history/airport/VTBD/2008/5/20/DailyHistory.html?req_city=NA&req_state=NA&req_statename=NA
The weather was mostly cloudy around 6PM-7PM in Bangkok. You can see it's cloudy in the above screencap of William & Isaac (South Korea). That's after the bug eating task.

Around 7:30PM - 8:30PM, the rain poured in. Some racers got wet and changed their clothes.

Maybe the yellow bags are raincoats.

Do the matching item task.

Hang on guys--pretty sure it is the 20th. I have emails about this but will need some time to track i all down due to a domestic disasster,
Bug eating for sure was not on the 19th.

What is he holding there? Product placement >>phone, GPS, etc? What matching item task?

I need to tweak the time estimate for the start shot.

Sorry!   :res:

This shot was taken between 5:08 and 5:38 pm (assumes May 20th).

My first try had a bad call on the tree shadow.  Now what I see is just the tree shading its underside  :groan:

The estimate here is based on the way the side trees are casting a shadow to just the far side of the pavement.  Also there is an okay (not great) shadow cast by one of the contestants that I could work with.

And this shot has no shadows but the way the light is brighter on one side of peoples arms and necks is consistent with a very low sun in overcast.  Also, that street does line up nicely with the solar azimuth of sunset about 290 degrees.  The street's azimuth is 297 degrees.

Thanks puddin!! I was just coming to add that exif data.

I reviewed what Andrew said in emails and his date was either 5/20 or 21... so w/ the task set up for the 20th that is the date we went with....

Would these buggy ones help, Chateau?  Loads more over here:

The camera says this shot was taken at 12:49:44.  I checked another photo of a sunrise from the same album.  The camera has its time set accurately as near as I can estimate.

here you go...

http://www.travelblog.org/Asia/Thailand/Central/Bangkok/blog-277711.html

keep in mind that the TAR mention was in the May 22 blog...he went back in and added the photo to his blog after we talked because the cafe he was in would not let him do attachments in an email to me... so it was added after the fact...

just checked and he added the pic on 5/27

Thank You!!   :jumpy: :jumpy:

The latest scheduled bus I can find is out of Bangkok at 945PM arr 730AM.....

so this makes me even more convinced that they have to find a chance at one of three chartered buses...

This picture was taken here between 11:54 and 11:59 am (assumes May 25th).  Corrected on 9/20/08, see new post!

This is an extremely fast-moving shadow situation.  If the shot was taken at 12:04 pm we would see the cyclo's shadow parallel to the curb!

Although it is covered by a cloud, this is a Panoramio shot that has been pinned to this location.  See how the lamp posts are the same.

Thank you Chateau for all the times!

Okay though, not what I wanted to hear.

I have been unable to find a train Saigon to Hue that gets in that early, so unless someone finds an earlier arriving train, then if we have Mai/Oliver in Hue by noon:

Saigon must be an extended pitstop and they must fly Saigon >>Hue on May 25.  darn it, I love trains!

We then have Ida at Imperial Palace at 1553, so almost 4 hours behind? :ascared
