Speculation on season 13
« on: April 25, 2008, 01:19:42 AM »
When I was at LAX I took pictures of all of the travel books at the bookstore.

Here is the top of the section.  Do you see what is missing?    :yess:

Visiting the bookstore was a good idea.  By all accounts they weren't rushed at LAX, so some clerk probably knows the books they bought (and first stop).

I was unable to get anything out of the clerks there.

But Argentina is missing.    ;)

Today, 4/25/08, I had the clerk there check to see if they usually have an Argentina travel book in stock.  They don't keep it.  So noting it's absence was a red herring.

Actually, CHATEAU, I don't. There is no space to the left of Australia(where Argentina would logically be placed) and there is none to the right of Australia at the end of that Lonely Planet mini-section. So I conlcude absolutely nothing from that picture.

As the West Coast gateway out of America, it looks like the store has a good stock of books for across the Pacific; China and Australia are the books stacked vertically, and these are also the thicker volumes Lonely Planet prints. Since LAX doesn't have direct flights to Buenos Aires, and the Argentina LP is hardly as thick as China or Australia, I would suppose a Lonely Planet Argentina would have been arranged with the spine facing out.

In that arrangement, I think you could squeeze at the very most one extra book in the middle cell, where Argentina would probably be. But one book missing doesn't mean very much at an airport as busy as LAX.

Going by the rest of the display, only up to three books of the same title would be put on the shelf at one time; if a huge group of the same title is sold from the shelves, the staff would most definitely replenish the shelves with the title (they have massive stocks) instead of shifting up every cell to fill the shelves end-to-end as we see here.

In that scenario, the presence, rather than the absence, of a book would be more indicative of teams all jumping on a book.

I'm not 100% sure on the conclusivity of the photo... We should go back to work some form of torture on the clerk! blahblah

(LP's "Buenos Aires Encounter" has been left untouched on the middle bracket, but really, who buys these mini-guides anyway?)

My bookstore has a South America section where the Argentina book would be--hence under S rather than A....

And the bottom.  That is all they had.  One section.  If someone wants a zoom in I can do that.

Perhaps they weren't smart enough to even stop in the bookshop and buy a guide book!  Any way to pressure the United clerk to find out where the three teams were buying tickets to?

It may not be that teams weren't smart enough to look into Argentina books. Thye may not have had time to do so. traditionally a race begins at 9 or 10am. Getting to LAX then takes time dwepending on the distance. With security and checkin reuirements, they would be pushing these 1pm-odd departures.

Speculation
« Reply #10 on: April 25, 2008, 12:59:52 PM »
It's a good time to create a pure speculation thread. Teams are about to leave Buenos Aires. Where are they headed? I can state the following:

1. The emphasis in AR11 on Patagonia makes it unlikely that they will go there again.
2. The trip to Mendoza in AR7 makes that area unlikely too.
3. The trip to Motevideo, Uruguay and San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina in AR5 make those unlikely.
4. The AR11 focus on Quito, Calama, Santiago, and Puerto Montt makes all of Chile unlikely.
5. The previous trip in AR7  to Lima and Cuzco and Arequipa make Peru unlikely except for Iquitos.
6. The previous trips to Rio de Janeiro in AR2 and Sao Paulo in AR9  make those two major cities in Brazil unlikely.

Where in South America does that leave as possible?
1. Paraguay - untouched in its entirety
2. Iguassu Falls - on the border of Brazil, Paraguay and nearly Argnetina
3. Bolivia - untouched in its entirety
4. Brasilia
5. all of the Amazon including Manaus, Belem, Iquitos
6. Salvador, Brazil
7. Recife, Brazil

Where would I go?
Iguassu Falls, which is where I think they are about to arrive at right now by bus or plane from Buenos Aires.

When South American legs are done, how would I leave South America?
The jump to Johannesburg has been overused. I would go direct to Europe, probably Paris or London or Lisbon or Madrid. Of those Madrid is the only one never on an Amazing Race before so that would be my favorite.

Good thoughts!  Lately they haven't done much "natural beauty" stuff.  How about staying in Buenos Aires?  Something to do with Evita Peron?  Dancing (although that's been done to death).  Soccer & beach volleyball have also been done.

Side note:  There have been lots of news stories about the terrible smoke in Buenos Aires over the last few weeks.

I'm thinking Bolivia; it has a variety of climates so that it can provide the contrast between legs that the South American legs tend to use (city vs. jungle in TAR2, TAR9, city vs. mountains in TAR5, and the different parts in TAR7 and TAR11). Second best bet would be northern Brazil in the jungle (Manaus would be fine). If they were to remain in Argentina, perhaps Rosario and other cities along the Rio Parana would be visited?

After South America is done, I also think we'll have a leg in Europe. My top choices in Europe would be either Madrid or London, though I don't think a leg in Germany (perhaps an actual Frankfurt leg) is too out of the question. From there, who knows? I do think that given the emphasis on the Mediterranean in the last race, that there might be some more northern European legs (and maybe TAR will finally go to Belgium or Denmark, whose exclusion in TAR so far has baffled me).

And as far as far out predictions, I suspect there will be a trip to New Zealand near the end of the race - it's been a while since they visited the land of the Kiwi. Perhaps Phil's trip home earlier in the year was for more than just recreational purposes...

How about the Falklands? or Malvina's

and then Peach's long awaited trip to the Antarctic - though Winter is approaching

And i agree re: Northern Europe.  I would like to see the UK again for obvious reasons.

So much they've missed (only London and Cambridge)  Morris Dancing as it will be May soon.

I definitely expect to see Copenhagen in this one and The Czech republic hopefully Madrid

Also we need to remember I assume that the store was checked when sited on the 23rd), that even when teams can't purchase a guidebook or don't want to spend the money.  Every single episode that has footage (or online clip) shows or talks about teams hiding the books of the place they are going so that teams that get their later wont beable to find a copy.

I think I would like them to play against type and go to the Pacific rim after South America instead of heading to either Europe or Africa.

God knows I miss New Zealand and Australia.

Any thoughts on if we will have a regular season or the reduced length of the last season.

While I really liked last season (much better casting after all then I thought).  It just flew by.

I noted in Kogs' listing of all flights from Buenos Aires that Asuncion and SantaCruz Bolivia were both there multiple times. His list was developed based only on EZE, the international airport. Newberry (code AEP) is the Buenos Aires domestic airport. It has flights to all over Argentina. It also has some international flights. I found a 2-stop flight to Iguassu Falls and a 1-stop flight to Asuncion. However, I basically agree with the depth of listings that Kogs found from EZE. The could get to Iguassu Falls and many places in northen Argentina by bus, but I don't think that's what they did.

The above post #10 holds up extremely well despite the shift from Buenos Aires to Sao Paulo. The only thing that changes is the first #6, which changes from Sao Paulo in AR9 to Buenos Aires in AR5.

Given the shift to Sao Paolo, I think that Salvador and Recife are fairly good follow up destinations (assuming Sao Paolo isn't just a transit point to another city).

Don't overlook Manaus or Belem; good locations for a ding on the Amazon to chase piranhas.

Won't deal with ethanol again I am sure.

And good chance they will come back through GRU on April 26; but to where?

GMAN, if you read the Timetables and Flight Information thread, maybe you could answer that question. My answers include:

Madrid
Lisbon
London
Paris
Frankfurt

All of these have nonstop flights from Sao Paulo that I have listed in a posting. However, the most interesting possiblity is going to Auckland New Zealand via either Santiago Chile or Buenos Aires, both of which have nonstop service that is also listed in a separate posting.

Of course, my logic of nonstop flights proved faulty on the first flights from LAX, but is less likely to prove faulty going long distances over the Atlantic Ocean or the Pacific Ocean as they are no reasonable transit points along the way. We could easily have a connecting flight to get to Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires, or Rio de Janeiro before hopping over the Atlantic or to Santiago or Buenos Aires before hopping over the Pacific.
