Racing Report Leg #6

Racing Report
Amazing Race
Season:  12, Episode #6
Title”  “Cherry on top of the sundae that’s already melted”, spoken  by Nathan
Provided Funds:  Possibly $109.00 stated by Kynt
Pit Stop:  A very non standard Pit Stop.  I would guess between 4-6 hours.
It is the day of July 19th.

Teams leave the Pit Stop at the Aukstaitija Windmill, on the outskirts of Vilnius the Capital of Lithuania since the 14th century in the order they arrive.
1.  Tk & Rachel 1:00am*
2.  Kynt & Vyxsin 1:01am*
3.  Ronald & Christina 1:15am*
4.  Azaria & Hendekea 1:20am*

Quote:  “Azaria is a bit of a control freak.”   :spoiler: :ahat:

5.  Nathan & Jennifer 1:29am*
6.  Nicolas & Donald 1:42am*

•   These times are inaccurate due to the scenes of the sun setting while the later teams check in at the end of last week’s episode.   The Sunset time was 9:43pm.  If the minutes are accurate (and that is questionable) then the teams had a very short Pit Stop of 4 hours…… :lies:

Teams must fly 900 miles to Dubrovnik, Croatia.  When they land they will travel by taxi to the base of Fort of St. Lawrence*.  Where they will find their next clue.

*The Fort of St. Lawrence was constructed in the early 11th Century to guard the harbor, an interesting note is to prevent a despot from assuming military control over the area, the Fort’s walls were designed to allow no meaningful attack from the town.

All teams except Ron & Christian head directly to the airport, which stop at a local hotel and use the phone to reserve tickets on Polish Air that departs Lithuania at 6:25am and arrives in Dubrovnik at 11:20am.

Tk & Rachel and Kynt & Vyxsin arrive at the hotel and use the internet and discover that Czech Air has the earliest flight.

Tk & Rachel camp out at the office for Czech Air*, as the other teams arrive and go get into line behind them.  Only Kynt & Vyxsin stay out looking for another flight option.

•   The lack of a real Pit Stop might be why the teams don’t immediately try pursuing other flight options.   :zzz   :zz:

The Line forms up with Tk & Rachel, Azaria & Hendekea, Ronald & Christina (who have tickets reserved on another airline, but form up here just to check), Nathan & Jennifer and Nicholas & Donald.

Ronald & Christina inform Azaria & Hendekea about the other flight through Polish Air, they proceed to attempt to make a reservation over the phone.

Kynt & Vyxsin are in FLYIAL Travel Agency where they are trying to book tickets.

Nathan & Jennifer leave the line to purse tickets at the same travel agency.  Ronald & Christina also leave the line and go to that same travel agency to try and find out when the office for Polish Air opens.

This jumps Nicolas & Donald from 5th in line to 2nd.

Azaria & Hedekea are unable to connect to Polish Air.   :ignore:

As the ticket office opens at 4:30am teams are told there are seats available. Jennifer & Nathan give up on the travel agent and return to the line for Czech Air, once they see that it has opened.  Azaria* & Hendekea arrive back to 5th in line as Hendekea says they screwed up by leaving.

•   Azaria’s behavior both verbally and how he guides her through the airport in this episode is extremely uncalled for.  In my opinion its the worst behavior of the episode.   :furious:

Ronald & Christina leave the line (again) and make their way to the LOT Office (Polish Airlines) to get their reserved tickets.  That office opens at 5:30am.

It is now 5:10am and TK & Rachel are almost finished getting tickets for a flight that departs at 6:00am.  Check in closes at 5:30, so teams are running short on time for the Czech Air flight.

Kynt & Vyxsin wisely take the later departing flight that still arrives in Dubrovnik at the same time (11:20am).  This is the same flight that Ronald & Christina have reserved tickets on.

At 5:30 Nicholas & Donald are just finishing up getting tickets.

Azaria & Hendekea go to the same travel agency as the Goths and attempt to get tickets.  They do request economy and the flight at this time does have seats available.

Nathan & Jennifer are too late to get seats on this flight (though it had seats available, just ran out of time).  They run to a different agency and try to get tickets on Polish Airlines.

Azaria & Hendekea are ticketed for Business Class on the 6:25 flight and don’t check it before leaving the travel agency to make their way to check in.   :wtf:   :nono2:

Nathan & Jennifer successfully get tickets on the 6:25 flight.

At Check In, Hendekea is told they have Business Class Tickets and they run back to the travel agency in an attempt to get economy, but they have run out of both time and seats in economy.

They must settle for the next available flight.  But there is a silver lining.  The 6:00 flight is delayed and will not make its connection.

Flight Info provided from aired footage in one case, and the rest is taken from Apskip (Christmas was wonderful, thank you).  :jam:

The first flight holds Tk & Rachel and Nicholas & Donald.  The second flight holds Kynt & Vyxsin, Ronald & Christina, and Nathan & Jennifer.  The final flight holds Azaria & Hendekea.

 :plane:

Departs FRA at 1430 arrives in DBV at 1615 OU419

•   I bet they are tired of that airport.

OF course, Tk & Rachel and Nicolas & Donald are delayed getting to Prague and miss their connection.  So they have to scramble to find new connections.

Connection #1 has Tk & Rachel.
Departs PRA at 0840 arrives in VIE at 0945 OS704
Departs VIE 1315 arrives in DBV at 1440 OS731

Connection #2 has Nicholas & Donald.
Departs PRA at 1200 arrives in ZAG (Zagreb) at 1335 OK818
Departs ZAG at 1445 arrives in DBV at 1540 OU662

Okay the episode now has 12 minutes left.  Wasn’t that exciting?  Yes, it was. :dick

Teams arrive in Dubrovnik in the following order and get to their cabs:
1.  Nathan & Jennifer 11:20am
2.  Kynt & Vyxsin
3.  Ronald & Christina (who stop and get directions and learn phrases from Tony a tourist director before leaving the airport)
4.  Tk & Rachel 2:39pm
5.  Nicholas & Donald 3:40pm*
6.  Azaria & Hendekea 4:15pm*

•   Arrival times are based on scheduled arrival time and not episode footage.

Edit:  All the teams baggage (except for their AR Packet, which usually contains their money, passport and clues) are taken into possession of the production team.  It is assumed due to the wet nature of today's tasks or perhaps the zip lines.

Teams arrive at the harbor and locate the clue box in the following order:
1.  Ronald & Christina
2.  Nathan & Jennifer
3.  Kynt & Vyxsin
Both teams go considerable out of their way at the harbor before reaching the clue box allowing Ron and Christina to pass them.
4.  Tk & Rachel
Who, it really goes without saying, get lost.  They find an American bridegroom form Ohio to guide them. :mas25
5.  Nicholas & Donald
6.  Azaria & Hendekea

ROADBLOCK – “Who has a builder’s eye?”

Find Stone:  In this roadblock the team member must help out in the renovations of Dubrovnik’s city walls damaged by repeated bombings during Yugoslavia’s Civil War of the 1990’s.

Now team members must search through a pile of 150 stones for one of eight stones that will fit into the wall.  When they have successfully completed the task the stone mason will hand them their next clue.

Since rocks that don’t fit must be returned to the pile here are the rough odds that decrease as the correct pieces are placed in the wall.

1.  5.33% chance to pick the correct stone.
2.  4.70% chance to pick the correct stone.
3.  4.05% chance to pick the correct stone.
4.  3.40% chance to pick the correct stone.
5.  2.74% chance to pick the correct stone.
6.  2.07% chance to pick the correct stone. :word:

Teams complete the roadblock in the following order:
1.  Ronald & Christina (that will show the Hernia’s who’s boss)   :box:
2.  Nathan & Jennifer
3.  Kynt & Vyxsin
4.  Tk & Rachel
5.  Nicholas & Donald
6.  Azaria & Hendekea (in sight of Nicholas & Donald)

Teams must make their way to the roof of the Fort of St. Lawrence, once up top teams will ride a tandem Zip Line* to the roof of the Fort Bokar** to retrieve their next clue.

•   That, Very well might have been the most beautiful Zip line the show has ever had.  It was gorgeous and I am jealous as all hell.
•   Fort Bokar was built in 1461 from the plans of Renaissance Architect Michelozzo Micholossi.

The actual clue states:

Route Info:  Right in front of you id he Fort of St. Lawrence.  Make your way to the roof.  Then ride a tandem Zip Line to Fort Bokar to retrieve your next clue.

Note:  There is only one tandem Zip Line.  First come, first served.

Teams arrive at the Zip Line and complete it in the following order:
1.  Ronald & Christina
2.  Nathan & Jennifer
3.  Kynt & Vyxsin
4.  Tk & Rachel
5.  Nicolas & Donald
6.  Azaria & Hendekea

DETOUR – Short & Long? Or Long & Short?

In this detour teams have to choose between 2 ways that foreign armies might have tried to invade Dubrovnik.  The choice:  Short & Long or Long & Short.

Short & Long:  Teams repel down from the roof of the fort the base and follow a marked path to the city wall.  Then using a rope ladder, they must scale the wall.  Once at the top they’ll make their way on foot through Dubrovnik’s Old Town to this plaza, Tij Oruzja (spelling?), where they will find their next clue.

Long & Short:  Teams use a tandem Zip Line down to the water below.  Once at the bottom they’ll swim to a floating platform and choose a small fishing boat.  Then they’ll row around the city walls to the harbor and run to the same plaza where they will find their next clue.

We get a screen shot that shows us the Route Info for the first Detour Option, it reads:

Detour
Short & Long? Or Long & Short?

Short & Long?  Repel down to the base of Fort Bokar.  Once at the bottom, choose a rope ladder and finish assembling it.  Then, scale the city wall.  Once at the top search Dubrovnik’s Old Town on foot for Tig Oruzja (?) to find your next clue.

Note #1:  There are 2 repel lines.  First come, first served.

Note #2:  Only 2 rope ladders may be hoisted at a time.  First come, first served.

Team arrive at the Detour in following order:
1.  Ronald & Christina (Rowing, and think it will be the physical easier task….Hernia 2, Ronald 0)   :box: :box: :box: :box:
2.  Nathan & Jennifer (Rowing)
3.  Kynt & Vyxsin (Repelling)
4.  Tk & Rachel (Repelling)
5.  Nicolas & Donald (Rowing)
6.  Azaria & Hendekea (Stationary Rowing….) :kayak:

Several teams have trouble rowing (shades of Season 10).  Including the only “Alpha Male”.

Teams finish the Detour in the following order:
1.  Nathan & Jennifer (who mange to barely pass Ron & Christina finding the clue box)
2.  Ron & Christina
3.  Kynt & Vyxsin
4.  Tk & Rachel
5.  Nicolas & Donald
6.  Azaria & Hendekea

Teams must now travel by Taxi through Dubrovnik’s stone streets to the edge of the city and find the Stone Cross Overlook*.  This religious landmark is the Pit Stop for this leg of the race.

•   Which was erected after the end of the Civil War.

1.  Ronald & Christina * (who successfully manage to get a cab to carry them)  The win a 12 and ½ ft catamaran (and know what it is!)

Nathan & Jennifer arrive in 2nd, but failed to take the approved transportation, as cab’s refused to take them as they were wet.  They must return to the last route marker and proceed by cab.

2.  Kynt & Vyxsin
3.  Nathan & Jennifer
4.  Tk & Rachel
5.  Nicolas & Donald
6.  Azaria & Hendekea (who are eliminated as called by Chateau weeks ago)

*  Ron & Christina are the only parent/ Child team to win a leg of the Amazing Race.

And according to interviews after the show, the penalty for using Business Class tickets is 24 hours (what under almost every case would eliminate a team)

Using apskips flight schedule and the Pit Stop arrival times.  This is how long it took teams to finish this leg after arriving in Dubrovnik.

1.  Azaria & Hendekea (this is an estimate) 2 hours 46 minutes.
2.  Tk & Rachel 2 hours and 58 minutes (very likely did finish fastest of the day).
3.  Christina & Ronald  3 hours and 3 minutes
4.  Nicholas & Don  3 hours and 27 minutes
5.  Kynt & Vyxsin  3 hours and 30 minutes
6.  Jennifer & Nathan 3 hours and 41 minutes.

Big difference between what actually happened.  And if Nate & Jenn would have been as lucky as Ron & Christina and taken a cab.  They would have saved 38 minutes on their day, when you also consider how much time they wasted trying to find the first route marker.  Damn....

Also it is possible that they estimated time for Azaria & Hendekea was considerable different as the estimated time is actually before Don & Nic check in so I think its safe to add anywhere between 10-20 plus minutes to that time.

Oh, and the estimate is from Chateau who usually is no more ten 20 minutes off.  He does a great job.

And just for the hell of it.

I did this for season 9, but never kept up wit it.  With Eric & Jeremy and to a lesser extent BJ & Tyler kicking the crap out of the other racers, I wanted to see if they in fact where doing the days tasks as well.

It is often difficult without set times to judge.  But this season we have some fairly hard evidence.

This is a work in progress and will be updated for the first 6 episodes from now to the end of the broadcast Sunday.

Episode #1.

Episode #2.  This episodes day starts at the Schipol Aiport and features only one real break in activity the wait for the bus ride.

Fastest to slowest
1.  Marianna & Julia 4 hours and 1 minute (but they also wasted a tremendous amount of time before getting to the airport by taking the coastal route.  THis had to have added about 30 plus minutes to their day.  And because of this, they ended in the back of the pack.
2.  Lorena & Jason 4 hours and 4 minutes (but had one of the longest waits for bus rides, easily should have made them the day's fastest.)
3.  Nathan & Jennifer 4 hours and 15 minutes
4.  Shana & Jennifer 4 hours and 16 minutes
5.  Kynt & Vyxsin 5 hours and 6 minutes (and also had a long wait for the bus)
6.  Azaria & Hendekea 5 hours and 7 minutes
7.  Tk & Rachel 5 hours and 8 minutes
8.  Nicholas & Donald 5 hours and 32 minutes
9.  Ronald & Christina with 5 hours and 41 minutes.  In fact if Kate and Pat had got the bus, they might very well have finished before Ronald & Christina.  Ron & Christina also wasted a bit of time trying to get flight info.  This probably added 10-15 minutes.

Episode #3
The days activities started somewhere between 7am and 8am with no equalizers once they disembarked from the train.

From Fastest to slowest (same order as check in), and the first day that Phil lies to us about check in times.  No matter.  I will assume 7am start up.
1.  Azaria & Hendekea 58 minutes (you can probably had an hour or two to each time)
2.  Tk & Rachel 1 hour 12 minutes (and these next 4 are actually not separated by full minutes)
3.  Nathan & Jennifer 1 hour and 13 minutes
4.  Kynt & Vyxsin 1 hour and 14 minutes
5.  Ronald & Christina 1 hour and 15 minutes
6.  Nicholas 7 Donald 1 hour and 16 minutes
7.  Shana & Jennifer 1 hour and 38 minutes
8.  Lorena & Jason 3 hours and 7 minutes
9.  Marianna & Julia over 3 hours and 7 minutes

Episode #4
One of only 3 episodes ever to not have equalizers.
From Fastest to slowest.  Phil also lies about ending times on this leg, but it should effect a comparison.
1.  Nathan & Jennifer 10 hours 33 minutes
2.  Azaria & Hendekea 10 hours and 47 minutes
3 (tie).   Ronald & Christina 11 hours 2 minutes
3 (tie).   Nicholas & Donald 11 hours 2 minutes
5.  Shana & Jennifer 11 hours 6 minutes
6.  Kynt & Vyxsin 11 hours 13 minutes
7.  Tk & Rachel 11 hours 44 minutes
8.  Lorena & Jason no way to gauge.
8.

Episode #5
All tasks start after arriving at the airport, there is no other equalizers in this leg.  But Phil is a big fat liar about arrival times.  So thanks to the sunset I am adding 8 hours to the check in times.  That assumes that the spread between first check in and last is accurate to the minute.
1.  Ronald & Christina 7 hours and 5 minutes
2.  Tk & Rachel 7 hours and 25 minutes
3.  Kynt & Vyxsin 7 hours and 26 minutes
4.  Azaria & Hendekea 7 hours and 55 minutes
5.  Nathan & Jennifer 8 hours and 4 minutes
6.  Nicolas & Donald 8 hours and 7 minutes
7.  Shana & Jennifer over 8 hours and 17 minutes

Episode #6

Team Rankings
Average Pit Stop Placement
At end of leg #6.
1.  Azaria & Hendekea  3.0
2.  Kynt & Vyxsin  3.17
3.  Tk & Rachel 3.83
4.  Nathan & Jennifer 4.17
5.  Ronald & Christina 4.67
6.  Nicholas & Donald 5.50

Azaria & Hendekea are only the 2nd team to get eliminated when they have the lowest Pit Stop Placement Average of the teams in their season.  Peter & Sarah were the first in season 10 with an average of 3.17 to Tyler & James' 3.33.

Azaria & Hendekea have the 3rd lowest Pit Stop average of any team eliminated.  Rob & Amber averaged 2.75 when eliminated in All Stars, and Derek & Drew averaged 3.09 in season 3 when they were eliminated.

Only season 4 had teams with higher Pit Stop Placement Averages.  At this stage the team with the lowest average was Millie & Chuck with a 3.67 going on up to David & Jeff's 5.83.

The lowest average at this leg of the race is still Eric & Jeremy with a 1.33 average.

Teams with Multiple 1st Place finishes by leg #6.
Eric & Jeremy             4
Ken & Gerard             3
Colin & Christie           3
Rob & Amber (AS)      3
AZARIA & HENDEKEA  3
Kevin & Drew             2
Oswald & Danny         2
Derek & Drew            2
Millie & Chuck            2
Steve & Josh             2
Kris & Jon                 2
Hayden & Aaron         2
Rob & Amber             2
BJ & Tyler                 2
Peter & Sarah            2
Charla & Mirna           2

Out of 72 teams that have raced in 2 person seasons this is how season 12's racers would place, and racers that have the same average on the 6th leg.
11.  Azaria & Hendekea (Colin & Christie)
15.  Kynt & Vyxsin (Flo & Zach and Peter & Sarah)
27.  Tk & Rachel (Ron & Kelly, Derek & Drew & Mojo)
32.  Nathan & Jennifer (Reichen & Chip)
38.  Ronald & Christina (bo team has the same average they would place between Dustin & Kandice and Chris & Alex)
59.  Nicholas  Donald (Fran & Barry and Charla & Mirna AS)

mswood, I think it is important to correct your narrative to show that if Nathan and Jennifer had not had wet clothes and the first cab had taken them, they would have been first at the pitstop.

mswood, I think it is important to correct your narrative to show that if Nathan and Jennifer had not had wet clothes and the first cab had taken them, they would have been first at tthe pitstop.

I actually thought about it apskip, but since Ron & Christina were literally seconds behind them it is easily possible that Ron & Christina could have a faster cab and still won.

After all in many episodes teams that start out first in a  cab don't end up first at the destination.  Thats just part of the luck aspect of the cabs.

Plus (and this I might be wrong), I think Ron & Christina also had to look for a cab that was willing to take them being wet, and they just happened to get the one that would, again the luck factor.

I am curious how long they actually were looking for cabs.

One of the things I forgot on originally watching this episode is that this group of teams really had no idea where the other teams were at.

After all they didn't know that TK & Rachel and Nic & Don didn't make it  And they were boarding, when Azaria & Hendekea were hoping to still be able to catch the early flight.  So I you can tell that they were surprised to be in 2nd even.  In fact everyone was pretty surprised when they checked in (except for Nic & Don and Azaria & Hendekea who probably knew what place they would be in).

Edit per spelling police. :knuckles:

And to add a note about baggage.
