Jennifer Parker and Nathan Hagstrom -TAR12

Jennifer & Nathan
Dating
Jennifer: Huntington Beach, CA
23, Student

Nathan: Fountain Valley, CA
24, Volleyball Coach

This athletic couple first met in college while living together with other friends. Both admit they couldn’t stand each other at first, but soon grew closer and started dating. They’ve broken up several times in their two-year courtship, but remain true to each other. In one breath each will tell you that the other is their soul-mate and in the next, they’ll tell you how much the other drives them crazy.

The biggest difference between the two is organization–he’s organized and she is not. Both have dominant personalities and tend to be very stubborn.

Nathan teaches volleyball and also works as a waiter. Jennifer is currently enrolled at Cal State Long Beach and works as a gymnastics coach. She was also on the Los Angeles Clippers Spirit dance team. Jennifer describes herself as thrilling and loving while he describes himself simply as “one cool dude.” Both are eager to put their relationship to the test on a race around the world.

'Amazing Race' duo squeaks by

How do you force a donkey up a hill? That was the quandary facing Jennifer Parker and her boyfriend, Nathan Hagstrom, in “The Amazing Race” reality show. Its 12th installment debuted Sunday evening on CBS.

The former San Diegan and her race partner were in second place among the 11 teams until all the other teams, except one, passed by them (and their donkey) to reach the designated destination. The team that finished last (about 20 minutes behind Jennifer and Nathan) was eliminated.

Parker, who attended elementary school in Del Mar and junior high in Solana Beach, is a senior at Cal State Long Beach. As a gymnast, and as a dancer for the L.A. Clippers basketball team last season, Jennifer is in great condition; nevertheless, she said the cross-continent race was much more difficult and stressful than it looks.
“It's really frustrating and hard to keep your cool. I should have closed my mouth a couple of times,” she says, “but I didn't do this to be famous.” She found the trek so eye-opening that she wouldn't hesitate to accept the challenge again.

Contestants are sworn to secrecy about the outcome of the pretaped show, but Jennifer and Nathan are still dating.

“They both said this strengthened their relationship in more ways than one,” says Jennifer's mom, Linda Parker, who lives in Mission Valley and manages a silk-screening company in Escondido.

As for budging the donkey, they finally did it with brute strength. Jennifer pulled as Nathan pushed from behind for about a mile. It took them four hours.

Cal State Long Beach  INTERVIEW with some interesting things about casting...

Quote
Casting and auditions for "The Amazing Race" proved to be a lengthy process, according to the couple.

Parker, a former Clippers Girl, was spotted at a Clippers game by a casting crew member and was urged to audition for the show. The pair eventually made their way to Morongo, where the auditions were taking place.

"The line was extremely long," Parker said.

Luckily, a casting crew member recognized Parker from the Clippers game and took the couple ahead to the front of the line.

"We just did our thing in front of the camera [and] danced and sang," said Hagstrom.

After making it all the way to the final auditions in Los Angeles, Hagstrom and Parker still had to go through numerous interviews and medical tests before filming began in July.

And:

no alliances

and:

Quote
In the Detour, teams filled baskets with 15 pieces of peat and transported it on a donkey to a nearby ranch to get their next clue. The task may sound easy, and it might have been if the couple had picked the right donkey. Sadly, this was not the case for Hagstrom and Parker, who took about five hours to get their donkey to move.

"We tried everything to get that donkey to move," Hagstrom said. "Jenn even tried to ride it."

I have loved this team from the moment I saw this sequence in Ireland:

Nate: "You are the worst person at this I've ever met. You know, other girls...."
Jen: "DON'T COMPARE ME TO OTHER GIRLS!" (runs away)
Nate: (mutters to himself) "Oh my God...."
Jen: "SHUT UP, NATE!!!!"

I replay that on my DVD at least once a week. You can't write stuff like that.  :lol3: :lol3: :lol3: :lol3:

me too Michael

I have been enjoying their spats, Jens desire and failing to come in first  I think the reason i didn't like them was due to Jen calling the other females - bitches, and the Goths - freaks.

Either she has stopped or it is being edited out.

I started liking them a little more after watching some of their insider videos -- and also they are kind of funny, I think it's more that I don't care who wins now that Kynt and Vyxsin are out.

Greetings RFFers. I write/blog about TV for the Orange County Register. Though the SoCal folks might like to know that Nate/Jen and TK/Rachel are hosting a viewing party Sunday (1/13) at Smooth's Sports Grille in Downtown Long Beach. Starting time is 6:30.

Yeah that, Michael.  Goth, I wish they were still there. :hugs: :hugs:

Jen/Nate are certainly NOT the worst "bickering" couple we've seen on any TAR!  :waves:  I think there's more hope for their future as a couple than others we've seen.

RealityTV exit interview--TK/Rachel were on the SAME flight!

http://www.realitytvworld.com/news/exclusive-jennifer-parker-nathan-hagstrom-dish-on-the-amazing-race-6393.php

Reality TV World:  So, let's start with Sunday night's episode's leg.  What ultimately led to your decision to take public transportation over a taxi?

Nathan:  Honestly, we've never been in Taiwan before and one of the things is, the locals obviously know more than we do.  If we have to trust a local or us, I would trust a local any day.  They told us to take the subway because the streets were really crowded and it was rush hour.  Just to get to the train station from the tea shop, it took a long time in a taxi.  So Jen and I thought, "Okay, maybe the park is really far away and a taxi might be disastrous.  We might be able to make up a lot of ground on the subway."  But in the end, he was wrong -- the local...
Jen:  It was a big maze under there...
Nathan:  It was a big maze...
Jen: ... We had to change subways like five different times.

Reality TV World:  How long would you say taking the subway and bus took you to get from the Night Market to the Youth Park?

Nathan:  Forty-five minutes.

Reality TV World:  Wow.

Nathan:  Yeah.  It wasn't short by any means.

Reality TV World:  Nathan why weren't you more persistent in taking a cab instead of public transportation, and Jen why did you seem so adamant about taking the subway and bus?

Jen:  I have to say that before I left, my dad was kind of giving me some advice.  He said, "If you're ever down to the wire and you're in a crowded city, subways are quicker."  That and my gut instinct -- he had told me that before the race -- and then a local... Always trust a local.  That's what we had in mind.  That was our motive going into it.  It was like those two and two put together, I felt in my heart that was the right thing to do.  And it was not at all.

Reality TV World:  Why once you got above ground from the subway did you still opt to take the bus instead of a taxi?

Nathan:  I don't know why we took the bus...
Jen:  I think we had lost it at that point...
Nathan: We just were really... For us -- they didn't show it, maybe they did and you guys got to see -- but we had bad luck with cabs.  We got into a lot of cabs where the driver had no idea where he was going.  But they won't act like they know where they're going.  They'll ask people along the way.  There were plenty of times where we were like, "This guy has no idea where he's going!"  We knew if we got on the bus it would take us down to this street where we knew that the park was at.  We were just like, "Okay, we know that this bus stops right here.  Let's just be safe."  I don't know... It might have cost us.

Reality TV World:  So do you think you'd have been racing in the final leg if you'd taken a taxi instead of public transportation, or where there other factors that contributed to it?

Nathan:  Jen says yes.  I think that... I honestly can't even tell you.  But it was really close and [taking a taxi] definitely would have helped.

Reality TV World:  Did you see any of the other teams once you arrived at the Youth Park for the Detour task?

Jen:  No.
Nathan:  We didn't see anybody.

Reality TV World:  Were you confident you'd be able to finish the leg without being eliminated or did you sense the end was near?

Jen:  I'm going to say -- without being too pessimistic and being optimistic -- I was hoping for the best, but I felt deep down that I knew we were the last team.  Because I mean not seeing anybody...

Reality TV World:  How far behind [the "Grandfather/Grandson" team of] Donald Jerousek and Nicolas Fulks were you in reaching the Pit Stop?

Jen:  Probably only five or 10 minutes.

Reality TV World:  What was your reaction when you overheard Christina Hsu telling the ticket agent in Osaka to not let you on the earlier flight to Taipei?  Did that have any impact on not getting tickets or was the flight in fact full by that point?

Jen:  It really had a huge impact.  Okay, so we heard her talk to our ticket agent.  The ticket agent came back and deliberately said, "Sorry.  No more seats.  It's full."  We're like, "But you just told us that you had seats!"
Nathan:  She told us they had seats...
Jen:  So I went over to Chris, I said, "Chris, how could you do that?  We know you told her that we couldn't get on!"  And she lied straight through her teeth to us and said, "Jen, you know my dad and I are not those type of people.  We don't play the race that way!  We would never do something like that."
Nathan:  Jen and I might fight and look like the bad people, but we never deliberately would lie to people or were disrespectful...
Jen:  We didn't play a conniving game...
Nathan:  Yeah.  We weren't really connivers.  We just did kind of our own thing.

Reality TV World:  Since Sunday night's episode didn't seem to show what happened, how did ["Newly Dating Couple"] TK Erwin and Rachel Rosales arrive in Taipei ahead of the flight carrying you, Nick and Don?

Jen:  We were on the same flight.

Reality TV World:  Okay, so you were all on the China Airlines flight that departed Osaka for Taipei at 1:15PM?

Nathan:  Yeah.  We were all on the same flight and I didn't even see them.

Reality TV World:  Okay.

Jen:  Yeah, they were on the same flight as us.

[EDITOR'S NOTE: In an apparently intentionally deceptive edit, The Amazing Race broadcast was edited in such a matter that TK and Rachel were shown going straight from attempting to buy tickets for an unspecified flight in Osaka while Nathan was noting there was "no sign" of TK and Rachel on the departing China Airlines flight to suddenly appearing, without explanation, in the Taipei terminal after only Jennifer, Nathan, Donald, and Nicolas had been shown disembarking the flight at the gate.]

Reality TV World:  You two seemed to constantly bicker with one another as soon as the race began.  Going into the race, did you anticipate that you two would argue as much as you did?

Jen:  We definitely did not.
Nathan:  We definitely did not think that we would bicker as much.  But after doing the race, I can't imagine -- seriously -- how people like TK and Rachel don't bicker more.  Because it's just that stressful of a race.

Reality TV World:  Okay, so I assume you don't normally argue that much at home?

Nathan:  It's just everything at home, everything now seems so easy.  It's just carefree.  But on the race, everything to Jen and I was a test.  Jen and I got tested every single hour it seemed like.
Jen:  Every minute! (laughing)

Reality TV World:  Nathan you accused Jen on more than one occasion of needlessly stressing you out.   How much of an impact do you think that had on the race?  Did it place an added burden on you as a team?

Nathan:  I'm not going to lie, it definitely did.  Jen, there were times when she was the perfect teammate.  She was strong and she'd get tasks done and she was better than a guy would be at some of the tasks.  But then there were times when Jen would stress out and freak out a little bit, and it definitely would add pressure to me.  You saw the [episode] where she said, "Nate you're the man.  You need to step up."  Just those comments alone cut me off at the knees a little bit.

Reality TV World:  Jen, could you explain what you meant when you made that comment?  What were you trying to get at?

Jen:  Well I definitely regret saying that...
Nathan:  Jen likes to test me.
Jen:  What I meant was... I'm looking at this man.  I've been with him a very long time.  He is one day going to maybe be the father of my children and have to run the household that I live in, is he going to be able to do the handy tasks that a dad or a guy needs to be able to do?  I said it mean, and that's my problem... I'm sorry Nate (laughing).

Reality TV World:  How long had you two been dating before going on the race?

Nathan:  We were dating -- before we went on the race -- we were dating just about two years.

Reality TV World:  Just to back up a little bit, do you think the editing gave an accurate portrayal of how much you guys were arguing?

Nathan:  Honestly we argued much less.  There's a certain amount of air-time per team per episode, you know, it's not that long.  We would race around for days and days, and they would only get to show an hour.  So there's a lot where you don't get to see maybe how the whole situation was portrayed or how it started even.  Maybe they'll show you the middle of it.  A lot of times they did show the correctness and we did argue a lot, but there were definitely days where we'd go without arguing.

Reality TV World:  Following your elimination, Jen you commented how you were unsure what the future held for you and Nathan and that the race "killed" your relationship.  What did you mean by that?  Was it said out of the heat of the moment?

Jen:  It was a combination of both.  I definitely feel like it was just not that we were losing the race, but I felt like it was a double whammy.  We lost the race, and we could have lost each other along the way.  We didn't even focus or concentrate one time on the entire race about each other's feelings or what would be better to empower the other person.  Instead we were so caught-up in competing, we freaked out and forgot about our relationship.  So that comment was kind of directed at that I wish we would have sought after our relationship so we weren't just losing the race... You know what I'm saying.  So we weren't losing both, we were just losing the race.

Reality TV World:  So to follow-up on that and confirm your earlier comment, are you two still dating now or have you gone your separate ways?

Nathan:  We actually got back from the race and we took some time apart.  But we actually are back together now and our relationship has never been better.

Reality TV World:  So based on that answer you think participating in the race kind of strengthened your relationship?

Jen:  I wouldn't even use the words "kind of."  It is the only reason why we are still together.
Reality TV World:  Wow.

Jen:  It helped us crank out all the nooks and crannies of our relationship -- all the bad things that we couldn't get through before.  Now it's so easy.  We just find even compromises and our communication's better.  It's awesome.

Reality TV World:  So which one of you two would say made more of the decision during the race?

Nathan:  Jen, she would love to be able to make all of the decisions.  You all saw that.  She wanted to be the one to make all the decisions, but as the race went along I told Jen, "You need to trust me.  I know a lot more of what I'm doing than you think I do."  So I'd say down the line I made a lot of the decisions.

Reality TV World:  Going back to the beginning of the race, you seemed to have considerable problems with your donkey during the first leg.  Seeing as how you finished second to last, what was your morale like?

Jen:  After almost four hours of sitting out there, almost every single emotion was running through our body.  We tried literally every type of technique that we had ever heard of to try and get this donkey to move.  So we actually were laughing, we thought that all the bad things that we'd ever done -- even something as little as running a stop sign -- we were like all the bad karma's coming to nip us in the bud.  "We're gonna get out the first leg!"  That was our ultimate fear, was getting out first.  So that was the only thing pretty much that was running through our heads.

Reality TV World:  Why did you decide against using the race's first U-Turn in Africa?

Jen:  Didn't you hear me, "We're gonna win this race like frickin' men!" (laughing)
Nathan:  Yeah, Jen said we're gonna win like men.  But our reasoning behind all that was we weren't going to play a dirty game until it was needed.  It was just too early in the race and we didn't want to have a target on our backs as being known as the dirty team.  We wanted the other teams to like us and help us out, and actually that did benefit us.
Jen:  Plus we were in the top...
Nathan:  We were in the top group and we knew that we didn't need it to win.

Reality TV World:  Why did you decide against using the Fast Forward during the race's seventh leg?  In hindsight, are you glad you didn't do it and subsequently receive tattoos?

Jen:  (laughing)
Nathan:  So this leg starts at 7AM, and I drove the whole night.  Jen and I woke-up at 6:59AM and we were supposed to be getting ready to open the clue at 7AM.  So I get out of the car and I'm bumbling around and we get dressed and I'm not even awake. Like I really have never felt insomnia in my life, but I was just kind of going through the motions.  So I open the clue, and it's a Fast Forward.  And the Fast Forward says, "Find your way here."  All I knew was I had to drive somewhere else.  My thought was "fly the Ultralights" [for the Roadblock task], the plane's here.  I know that I don't need to go anywhere because I'm already here.  That was my decision.  I did not even want to mess around with driving.

Reality TV World:  Okay, that makes sense.  During the subsequent leg -- when you left the "Thread 'Em" Detour task and knew there was an upcoming U-Turn -- would you have used it on "Dating Goths" Kynt Cothron and Vyxsin Fiala if you had gotten their first?

Jen and Nathan:  Yes.

Reality TV World:  Okay, so how surprised were you when you reached that U-Turn and saw that not only had Kynt and Vyxsin gotten their before you, but had used the U-Turn on Nick and Don?

Jen:  We were just...
Nathan: (laughing) Confused...
Jen: ... Really confused!  We left the Detour, they were only half-way done making their flower garland.  So we were like, "There's no way they could possibly catch up and beat us there." So we were just confused...

Reality TV World:  What happened there?  Why did it take you so long to find the traffic island where the U-Turn was?  Did you get lost?

Nathan:  We didn't know it, but we did.  We thought Nick and Don had U-Turned Kynt and Vyxsin... For some weird reason that's what we thought.  We thought that Kynt and Vyxsin did the "Paste 'Em" and then they were running back to do ["Thread 'Em"].  I don't know why we thought that...
Jen:  (laughing)  There were a lot of different scenarios going on in our head!

Reality TV World:  So how far ahead of Kynt and Vyxsin were you in reaching that Pit Stop?

Nathan:  We thought that we could be last.  We didn't know.
Jen:  Because when Kynt and I finished the Roadblock, he finished maybe a couple of minutes after I did.  Let me tell you this, we sat in the worst traffic [on the way to the Pit Stop]... like 45-minutes.  So our hearts were racing.
Nathan:  Yeah we didn't know.

Reality TV World:  You two had five second-place finishes during the race and seemed to be aware that you were always short in your bid to come in first.  Was it discouraging to always be second?  Did you see it as a positive since you almost always avoided the back of the pack?

Nathan:  It was one of those things like a double-edged sword.  We were super happy to still be in the race, we were super happy like, "Yes! We're obviously doing good."  But then it's one of those things like, "Oh man.  Can we actually step-up and ever finish first?  It could be one of those things where we're never going to get it."  It turned out to be like that.  But definitely, every time they said second we were to be in the race, but we also wanted to win a cool prize too.

Reality TV World:  Jen, can you explain your thinking when you complained about ["Brother/Sister" team] Azaria and Hendekea Azene not letting you finish the fourth leg first?  Had you made some type of agreement with them earlier, or did you just forget that it was, after all, a competition?

Jen: (laughing)  Honestly, the point of that comment was speaking on impulse and not thinking before I talk.  But because they had won two legs right before that, I was like, "Come on!  Let us get first!"  It was kind of meaning why can't we get first, it was totally reaction...
Nathan: Who knows?  They might have listened and gave us first! (laughing)
Jen: I never would ever expect someone to give it to us -- that's not what I really meant -- but it was just frustration and anger emotion speaking.  I'm so competitive!

Reality TV World:  Nathan, you went to the same high school in Fountain Valley, CA as TK, Rachel and Staella Gianakakos.

Nathan:  Yeah...

Reality TV World:  Did you all know each other in high school or where you in different grades?

Nathan:  I knew of TK Erwin and Rachel.  I knew Staella but I didn't... I don't know, I knew Staella kind of, but she wasn't my friend.  TK and Rachel, I never spoke a word to in my life... I honestly knew who Rachel was -- but when I saw TK -- I had no idea who he was.

Reality TV World:  So I guess it was when all the teams met that you realized it?
Nathan:  Well he said, "Hey, I'm TK."  I'm like, "TK?  What's your last name?"  Then I'm like, "Oh!"  I knew the name, but I had no idea who he was.

Reality TV World:  When did the other teams learn about it?  Who revealed the information?

Nathan:  It was one of those things where we were all like, "Whoa, this is pretty weird!"  But it was also one of those things where we didn't really know each other.  It wasn't like, "Hey!  Oh yeah!"  We didn't even know each other really...

Reality TV World:  So I'm assuming it never helped or hindered your team?

Nathan:  No...

Reality TV World:  How were you cast for The Amazing Race 12?  Was it your first time applying for the show?

Jen:  Yeah, it was our first time applying for the show and actually Nate's mom, I think she saw an ad for it and she's like, "What have you guys got to lose?"  She urged us to go to the auditions, and actually at the open casting call, one of the casting producers came up to me and said, " Are you a [Los Angeles] Clippers girl?"  I was like, "Yeah."  She was like, "Oh my Gosh!  I saw you dancing at the game and we wanted to get in touch with you."  It was just kind of meant to be that Nate's mom guided us in the direction there and then one of the casting producers had spotted me a couple nights before dancing at a game.

Reality TV World:  Which team did you want to see win the $1 million prize?  Anybody you didn't want to see win?

Nathan:  After Jen and I got out... Our obvious competition -- for Jen and I -- was TK and Rachel.  For some reason, we didn't want a team like us to win.  Someone who was young and... You know, Don and [Christina's dad Ronald Hsu] are older.  They're the first older men to get that far in the race, so we really wanted to see them win.
Jen:  Yeah, we were really pushing for them to win.

Reality TV World:  So what's next for you two?

Nathan:  Well Jen and I both, it's up in the air.  Right now I'm actually a sever at a restaurant and Jen's still in school.  We definitely want to keep traveling, seeing the world.  After going to places like Africa and India and seeing underprivileged people, we definitely can see ourselves helping people.  Your know we have it good here, and we want to get out and...
Jen:  Make use of our time...
Nathan:  ... Make use of our time in a better way.

It's nice to see that they worked on their relationship after the race and are still together. For other couples, the race can totally destroy a relationship and I'm glad to see they're communicating better. Good for them.

Relationship 1, 'Amazing Race' 0

So now "The Amazing Race" is down to three teams. Sunday, the standard bickering-couple-testing-their-relationship, Nate and Jen got the boot even though they probably were the strongest team overall that was left.

I'd be a complete liar if I denied feeling schadenfreude in a big way. But talking to the two of them on the phone, both of them were very gracious and caring. Here's what they had to say about the Race, their relationship and each other.

MSN: Nate and Jen, I don't know what to say, you guys. You seemed like you were going to get into the finals and it just didn't happen for you.

Nate: No, unfortunately it didn't. We definitely thought when we were in the final four there was no way we're not making the final three. So it was a pretty big shock to us, and it was very disappointing.

MSN: What do you think was your downfall ultimately?

Nate: Jen and I didn't show the proper teamwork a lot of the time and we didn't communicate well with each other. I think in the end it may have costed us.

MSN: Jen, what's your take?

Jen: My take is everything Nate just mentioned but also the fact of the matter is we arrive at the train station at 7:30 when there was a train taking off right at 7:36. We could have gotten on that train but we didn't. We freaked out. We panicked and we weren't thinking clearly. And also, we ended up taking the subway and that was a bad direction to go. It was a maze down there. We got really lost. We trusted one of the locals because we said, "How can we get there quickest, a taxi or subway?" And she told us the subway would be much quicker because it's really trafficky.

MSN: Going back to your decision to be on the Race in the first place, as I remember you wanted to test your relationship. What's the verdict?

Nate: Well, we definitely tested our relationship in a lot of areas. After the Race was done, Jen and I had no idea what we were going to do. But now, we're happy to say we are together. We're doing better than we've ever done, and the Race was the biggest part of the experience that we ever could have had. We learned a lot about ourselves and we matured a lot and we're very thankful for the experience.

MSN: What was the biggest lesson about yourselves that the Race taught you?

Nate: For me, honestly, it'd have to be patience. I was very impatient and I didn't communicate well when I was all stressed out. To be in a relationship, especially with a woman like Jennifer, who's a tester, who likes to test a lot, you have to be patient and step back and let her do her own thing sometimes.

Jen: For me, I would definitely say acting on impulse. I need to think about what I say before I talk, look at the situation, analyze it, try to see a positive outcome before I even open my mouth.

MSN: I guess I should say congratulations that you're still together. Do you know when you might be taking the next step in your relationship?

Nate: Right now, I think we're still watching the episodes opened some wounds a little bit. We're still moving forward and we're still working on each other. I really can't answer that right now. We're just doing good right now and we're going to leave it at that.

MSN: How hard is it to watch some of these episodes and relive them?

Jen: It's really hard for me because the way the edits are coming out I'm looking like this mouthy, bitchy firecracker in this relationship

Nate: Which she is.

Jen: I am. But there was a lot of provoking. For me, it was a real eye-opener. It's been hard. There's been a lot of negativity I've had to deal with, with people not talking about the nice things about me. But I'm not too worried about that, because if people know me, they know I have the biggest heart in the world.

MSN: What do you think "The Amazing Race" showed about you that doesn't meet the real you?

Nate: Sometimes "The Amazing Race" made me look like a bumbling idiot sometimes, which I'm definitely not. We're very intelligent people. But when you're stressed out, you don't make good decisions. People forget you're in foreign countries, and you don't speak the language, and you're hungry and tired and you don't even know what's going on. And then when you're supposed to make decisions, a lot of times you're not going to make the right one. So that's one thing. It makes people look stupid, even though it's in the most intense situation anyone could be in.

MSN: What about you, Jen?

Jen: Overall, I think they portrayed me as competitive, fierce, loud person, which is very accurate because I am very competitive and loud. But the only thing that disappointed me is I'm funny and very nice. I'm very loving, and I wish they would have portrayed more of the nicer sides of me. And also too, I love Nate. I'm not always that mean to him, and they only ever showed me being mean and aggressive and fighting against him, and that wasn't the case all the time at all.

MSN: They did give you that one moment at the end when you jumped on Nate. That seemed like a sweet farewell to you.

Jen: That's how we are.

Nate: We saw that and we were very pleased. We didn't really know what to expect, because you never really do anyways. But having that kind of farewell when we got to come together and hug it out, I was very pleased with it.

MSN: What have your friends and family said watching this with you?

Jen: They are so happy. It's just smiles from ear to ear on all of our friends and family. They're living it up. They're loving it. They're just telling so many people, being like, "Oh my son or my daughter or my friend is..." It's a great experience not just for Nate and I but for our friends and family too. It's just been such a good bonding experience that I feel like I've gotten so much closer to Nate's family through this whole thing too. And vice versa with Nate and my family. It's just been great overall. We feel so lucky.

Nate: The thing is, they knew Jen and I were crazy before the whole thing started. So watching it on TV wasn't that big a surprise.

MSN: So if you had it to do all over again, would you work on your relationship through "The Amazing Race" or would you just go to therapy or something?

Nate: I definitely would do "The Amazing Race" again in a heartbeat. Jen and I, we're extremists. That's just who we are. We can't hide it. We're loud, we're vocal, we're competitive, we're passionate. "The Amazing Race" is right up our alley and we enjoyed every second of it.

Jen: I think we know now where to and not to step on each other's toes and take the lead. I think we learned that about each other, big time. So we would be a lot more successful.

MSN: Is it fair to say you guys were the quote-unquote villains of this race, and if so, how do you feel about that sort of characterization?

Nate: I like it. We might have been the villains, but every story needs a villain. If Jen and I were the villains, I hope we did a good job. [Jen and Nate laugh]

Jen: That's classic.

Nate: We are who we are.

Jen: We're not really villains in real life. That's why it's hilarious. People are getting a kick out of how they're portraying me and Nate. It's all fun and games.

Nate: We're taking it all in stride. If we were going to worry about it, we'd never move forward.

MSN: I have to say I started rooting against you when you came in second to Hendekea and Azaria, and Jen something like, "They've already been in first and now it's our turn." What were you thinking about when you said that, Jen?

Jen: Well, Nate really wanted to answer that question. (Laughs). First of all, that was completely ill-perceived, I would say. I did not mean for them to step aside, and on the show "The Amazing Race" let us walk on the mat and let us get first place. That's not what I was intending. I'm just so competitive that my emotions lashed out. They had just won, what, the last two or three prior legs consecutively in a row. I was like, "Give us a break!"

Nate: We all think it. Jen says it. (Laughs) If you were in that situation, seeing another team win, you might think, "God, why can't we win?" Jen's going to say it instead of just thinking it.

Jen: We're good friends with them now. It was totally a one-minute thing. I gave Hendekea a big hug afterward.

MSN: How does it feel that you guys were toward the front of the pack constantly, but you never quite made it into first?

Nate: That was one of the most discouraging things for Jen and I because we were so close so many times and we were chasing the lead and first place. The worst thing was, every time we were in the front, a different team was ahead of us. We knew that everyone else had a chance to win besides Jen and I. But we were still in the Race and we were still going forward so we couldn't be that upset. But then we'd ask a team, "What'd you guys win?" or "What happened?" they'd say "A trip to Cancun." Over a matter of minutes they got to go to a cool place. It was a pretty hard thing.

MSN: What if anything would you change about how you did the Race?

Nate: Our communication. I think everyone can see that we needed to communicate better. I'd say not to put so much stress on ourselves, let things come more naturally to us and not force things. A lot of times we'd force situations and we got involved in things we shouldn't have. I think we had to trust each other more too. We would have come out a lot better in our relationship if we had put more faith in each other to come to correct decisions.

MSN: What advice would you give to aspiring Race competitors?

Nate: Don't do it. No, I'm just kidding. Anyone in a relationship, just beware that it's very hard. It's an experience you'll never forget. Jen and I thankfully, we're strong people and we made it through. But it could be a lot for some people and do it in. It really does test your relationship. Jen and I almost lost each other over "The Amazing Race." Some people might never have gotten back together. It really does test your relationship to the max.

MSN: Were there times when you basically said "We're done," to yourself or the other partner?

Nate: There were plenty of times when we thought we were done.

Jen: Never again. Never.

MSN: How did you come back from that?

Jen: When we got back, we took some time away from each other, just a week and just reflected on the experience and calmed down. I don't know if you know this, but during the Race, we have to be within 20 feet of each other the entire time. So there was no cooling off time. There was no alone time to just  reflect and regroup and move on. So it was really good for us. We just realized that Nate and I can't live without each other. We have some deep-down bond where we're connected for life.

MSN: Why don't you give me your impressions of the three remaining teams?

Nate: At the beginning of the season, I don't think anybody would have thought Ron and Chris and Nick and Don would be in the final three. TK and Rachel, yeah, but Nick and Don and Ron and Chris are definitely sleepers.

Jen: We were definitely rooting for one of those teams to win.

MSN: Can you give us any hint as to what to expect in the final episode without giving too much away?

Nate: We really can't except to say it's very exciting.

Jen: You're going to be on the edge of your seat.

The Amazing Race: Are Nate and Jen Still Together?
by Rochell D. Thomas

Jen and Nate, The Amazing Race
When they weren't fighting each other, Jennifer Parker and Nathan Hagstrom fought hard to stay in The Amazing Race 12. But, alas, luck would not have it and Taiwan was their last stop. They were eliminated after they took a local resident's advice that taking a subway would be faster than dealing with traffic in a cab. That decision dropped like a nail in the coffin of their nearly three-year relationship. Why? Read on. (Amazing Race's season finale airs Sunday at 8 pm/ET on CBS.)
TVGuide.com: Ousted on your birthday. Ouch. Did you get to celebrate in any way?
Jen: Once we got back we went out with family. But being in Taipei, Taiwan, that was enough for me.

TVGuide.com: Speaking of Taipei, you two know Taiwan and Thailand are two different countries, right?
Nate: Oh. Yeah. [Laughs] On the show I said, "I like Thai food" and my mind obviously wasn't thinking that I was in Taiwan. I was just kind of spaced. I definitely know Taiwan is different from Thailand.
Jen: You know I didn't even realize that until just now. [Laughs]

TVGuide.com: The big question: Are you two still together?
Nate: After the race we actually did take a few days apart to just kind of cool our heads. Then we put things in perspective and we realized that we do love each other a lot. So we are still together. We don't live together. But we're still very much an exclusive couple.

TVGuide.com: How'd you make that happen?
Nate: It was the bumpiest ride we've ever been on in our life. But to tell you the truth, we've learned so much about ourselves individually and what we really want.
Jen: And how to handle certain situations. Because we pretty much came across any type of situation any couple will ever be in. Now, being back home, everything's so easy.
Nate: We're changed people.

TVGuide.com: I hope so, Nate. Because you said some horrible things to Jen. You told her you couldn't stand her. And you said it with venom. You also said, "You're the worst person I ever met."
Nate: I meant, you're the worst person at this. At what we were doing.

TVGuide.com: And when you called her the B-word?
Nate: That's the one that I'm most ashamed of. And, I admit it. I made mistakes. I do love Jen and I told her after everything that I genuinely was sorry.

TVGuide.com: What did your mother say to you after she saw the way you talked to Jen?
Nate: My mom laughed. My parents know us both quite well. And anyone who knows us knows we're both people who say things without thinking all the time.
Jen: We forget that, to other people, it might sound a little inappropriate or vulgar. But I think that's what Nate and I take out of this race. "Whoa. We need to watch what we say." We've got to imagine the impact it's leaving.

TVGuide.com: In your last episode, Jen said, "I want to rip the dreads out of his," meaning T.K.'s, "head." What did he ever do to you?
Jen: I'm going to choose not to speak about that.

TVGuide.com: Wow. What happen off-camera?
Jen: Nothing happened off camera at all.
Nate: Jen speaks her mind. And we were not happy to see T.K. and Rachel. But we didn't hate T.K. and Rachel for who they were. We just hated them for where they were in the race. We would have disliked any team in their shoes. It wasn't personal.

TVGuide.com: Looking back it's all so foggy. Did you two ever win a leg?
Nate: We came close numerous times. But we didn't win one leg or one prize the whole time.

TVGuide.com: Oh, wait. You came in second to Azaria and Hendekea. It's coming back now. The look on your face. What did you expect — that they were going to let you go ahead of them?
Jen: Everyone keeps saying that. They had just won the three legs. And I was disappointed like, "Gosh, we were right there." I wasn't like, "Come on guys, let us go first. " I don't know why it came about that way.

TVGuide.com: How happy were you when Kynt and Vyxsin did not U-turn you?
Nate: We thought Nick and Don had U-turned Kynt and Vyxsin. We didn't even understand it. We were like, "What?" "Huh?"
Jen: Because when we were making the flower garlands, we left before Kynt and Vyxsin were even halfway done. And then when we got there we were so confused that they could have possibly beaten us. Our taxi driver must have gotten lost.

TVGuide.com: Speaking of taxis, Jen, what was it like to drive in Japan?
Jen: Nerve-racking. Looking up and seeing symbols and not any type of language was mind-boggling. It was very difficult to navigate and I got out seven or eight times to ask people on the side of the road [for directions]. Hardly anybody there spoke any English.
Nate: Jen underestimates herself. Because she is not afraid to speak to people, she'll ask for directions, say anything to anybody no matter who it is. I think she's best at doing those kind of things. She may not think so, but she is.
Jen: Thanks, Nate.

TVGuide.com: In Africa, you milked a camel and delivered a goat. Back in Ireland, you two yelled at your donkey so strongly it started to shake. What have you learned about animals on this race?
Nate: That we need to be more patient. Animals are... how do I say this? Animals. They do what they do. They're going to react to how you treat them. Regarding the donkey....
Jen: We didn't treat the donkey that bad. And I have to add that we were running along fine with our donkey until Azaria and Hendekea came running by. They were slapping their donkey on the side with the clue. And theirs was going so much faster that I thought, "That's such a good idea." So I grabbed my clue and started smacking our donkey's butt and...
Nate: ... he stopped.
Jen: Four hours later, he moved. So imagine: We were out there for four hours trying to get that donkey to move.
Nate: Jen was shedding tears left and right.

TVGuide.com: What happened in Croatia when you were penalized for bumming a ride to the pit stop? Did you misread the clue?
Nate: Actually you can't take a private civilian's car. You have to take a public form of transportation. That's a rule. But we were in such a rush. And we wanted to finish first.
Jen: And after asking that whole line of white Mercedes taxis! We went to six cars. But no one would take us. The first guy who told us no was talking to the other guys saying, "Don't let them in."

TVGuide.com: Why, were you that wet and smelly?
Nate: I can't tell you the answer. But it cost us first place. So it was very aggravating.

TVGuide.com: You forgot to take public transportation in Croatia but in Taipei you took the subway when you could have hailed a cab. Why?
Nate: You have to trust the locals. It's their city. It was a gamble that could have paid off. But it didn't.

TVGuide.com: Did you get lost?
Jen: No, it was really just a much slower route because there wasn't one subway directly there. We had to get out and change. And it was like a big maze underground — red line, green line, blue line, the A1.

TVGuide.com: Did you realize at that point that you'd been eliminated?
Both: Yeah.
Jen: I felt it in my heart and my gut. It was not a good feeling.

TVGuide.com: Then let's move to a happy thought: Which was your favorite leg?
Nate: Italy. Because it was the smoothest and we got to do a lot and the tasks were pretty cool.
Jen: I was just going to say Italy, too. Not that I didn't respect Nate before Italy, but it made me respect him more. We hadn't slept in two days. Then we had to drive five and a half hours in the middle of the night, up and down these windy mountain roads with a stick-shift car. Nate pulled through. I was falling asleep in the back while trying to navigate. But he was trooper. I was really impressed with him. Good job.

TVGuide.com: Oh, now you're nice to each other. Better late than never.
Jen: We were nice to each other during the race.
Nate: More than you would think.
Jen: A little bit. Once.
