CBS's fall ratings
« on: September 20, 2007, 09:45:29 PM »
Well since many of us are hoping for an earlier then announced start to season 12 (with of course the hopes for a season 13 this year as well).

I thought I would start to post the ratings (success and failure :yess: )of CBS programming to see if we have any real reason for hope).

Yesterday saw the premiere of Kid Nation.  A show which has had a ton of media exposure.

Its offical ratings (these are final numbers and not fast nationals) were:

Kid Nation
- 9.382 million viewers
- 6.0/10 HH
- 3.1/9 A18-49

For those who don't follow ratings. This is a a decrease from last years show (jericho) whch opened with 11.6 million viewers and a 3.4 in adults/demo.

Media anaylist consider it a modest opening.  And disappointing when you consider that 1, it was heavily promoted and had a lot of media coverage.  And 2, that it opened with ABC and NBC were running reruns still.

It will be curious to see how it performs next week when all 5 networks will be running originals.

To compare it to Amazing Race's two seasons last year.  It scored higher then 4 episodes (all of them All Star episodes).

I will update with stats for all the new shows and just general posts concerning the strength of the rest of its line up.

Well Survivor started its new season on Thursday amid a night primarily of reruns (inlcuding the rest of the CBS scehdule) with 15.12 million viewers and a 4.9 in adults 18-49 and was down 2.3 million in viewers and 25% in the sought after 18-49 demo from last years opening.

But unlike Wednesday's Kid Nation, this could very possible be due to the far, far more popular CSI being in reruns.  There is good chance that this weeks might improve upon that number.

And let the gloating begin.

On a night with only two networks (CBS and FOX) showing their new schecule, CBS fell dramatically from the fall premiere last season.

The two returning series (60 minutes and Cold Case) were both down in both total viewers and adults.

And more important to TAR fans.  The Sumemr game show (that was renewed for extra episodes for the fall) The Power of Ten.

That managed 7.47 million viewers and a 1.7 in adults 18-49.

In comparison to Season 10.  AR managed 9.85 in total viewers and a 3.1 in adults.

All Stars opened to 10.29 and a 3.1 in adults.

Now in AR Case, ALL Stars only managed a 10.1 in total viewer average for its run and a 3.0 in adults.

But Ar season 10 averaged 11.5 million viewers and a rating of 3.9 in adults 3.9.

In fact every episode of Amazing Race last year (season ten and All stars) managed both higher viewer totals and a far, far higher number of viewers in teh adults 18-49.

In fact we have to go back (and this is a maybe, not absolutely for sure) to season 9 when they changed the day and time slot mid season to 10pm to get a rating that low for Amazing Race.

Cold Case was down to 12.3 million viewers (last year it managed 16.27 million viewers) and 3.0 in adults 18-49 (last year opened with 4.1 in adults).  While Shark performed fairly evenly with Cold Case (11.52 total viewers, and 2.7 in adults 18-49).  Without a trace managed far better numbers last year with 17.56 million viewers and a 4.8 in adults

Look for these numbers to slide even further next week as NBC and ABC well role out all new shows.

Yeah, that does hurt the lineup, but CBS went last fall agains't that same NBC football, and performed accross the board much better.

There is a huge difference between NBC Sunday night football games in 2006 and NBC Sunday night footall games in 2007. It is vastly higher quality games, with important rivalries and winning teams in most of the slots. For example, the annual grudge match between the Eagles and the Giants is on this coming Sunday night. It is sure to be smash-mouth football and will draw high ratings as long as the game is close. NBC somehow (and I will guess that large quantities of money had something to do with it) got the NFL to tilt the schedule in favor of NBC. Competing against Sunday night football is not going to be fun for any of the other networks.

While I do agree, Apskip, that the teams playing are more interesting games.  Its still getting close to the same ratings as last year.

But Monday Night Football on ABC went through the same type of thing.

For most all the years the schedule was made in advance with no real concern to making the matchups worth while.  It wasn't until near teh end of their last contract taht they allowed some flexability in the schedule to hopefully deliver more interesting matchups.

Final numbers are out for Sunday's lineup and Cold Case imporved with final numbers to 12.7 million, Shark was down slightly to 11.42 million, and The POwer of Ten was down to 7.11 million. :yess: :lol3:

Now there was one factor that was probably more important then Football to CBS lineup (especially since there was football last year).

PBS (Yes, I just typed PBS) had a special about WWII survivors that got 15 million viewers.  Yes 15 million viewers.

So while the night was down significantly and even more so at 8pm (nearly 30 pecent), and even more so in teh key money making demo of adults (nearly 50%).

With a 1.6 rating in adults, that number is something that Smallville can get on the CW, with a total audience of 4 plus million viewers.  If that continues then the 8pm hour is dead.

Fox has the first unofficial casuality of the new year.  As Friday's Nashville (Hell, I never even heard of it) has been put on hiatus.

I was so hoping it would be a CBS show.  Oh well, I expect several poor starts from CBS shows this season.

Well CBS had an okay (though down) Tuesday in teh ratings.

But for us AR Fans the 2cd episode of Kid Nation aired Wednesday and it fell.

Kid Nation
7.62 million total viewers
2.8 in adults 18-49

This is a decline of nearly 20 percent in total viewers and a loss of nearly 10 percent in adults 18-49.

Not a good start for this new reality show :lol3:

The only positive it had is that it did score fairly well with the very young.   But that isn't a market that CBS persues.

In all honesty, CBS might be smart to cut its loss and send this program to the CW where its demo's would fit closer to the target demo of that Network.

CBS much maligned "Moonlight" debut last night.  And as a night CBS was down nearly 20 percent from last season, but Moonlight actually matched the ratings of the rest of the night.

Moonlight
8.62 total viewers
2.5 for adults 18-49.

I had really hoped for a worse performance from this show.  Or more importantly I had hoped that it would perform worse then the rest of the night.

Last season each of CBS shows opened with 11 plus million viewers.  This year each managed 8.6 to 9.3 million.

So as long as it matches the other shows it will be safe. :'(

Thought this was an interesting take on the breakdown for the Kid Nation ratings:

"One of the top shows among 2-11 with a 1.8 rating"

Quote
“Nation” is averaging a 1.8 kids 2-11 rating through two outings, or more than double what CBS averaged last week, the week ended Sept. 23, in that demographic.
The show, about a group of kids who forge their own society without any grown-ups, handily won its Wednesday 8 p.m. timeslot last week with a 1.9 rating, even outdrawing the CW’s young-skewing “America’s Next Top Model.”

This week’s second showing dipped 16 percent from the opener to a 1.6 in that demo, but that came against a special edition of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars,” by far the night’s top-rated show in the demographic.

Yeah, Peach.

The studios put out press releases (usually 5 times a week) to give "spin" on the performance of their shows.

For example, ABC put ot one saying how Grey's Anatomy was the hgihest rate show in adults 18-49.  But they don't mention that it lost 20 plus percent from last year and nearly 5 million viewers from last year where it was the most watched in total viewers as well.

And the only bright spot on the performance of Kid Nation is how well its playing to the very young.

But unforunately for the network, that isn't a demographic that they seek out or one that has crossover appeal to other CBS programming.   CBS has the oldest viewing audience of all the networks.

Now in all honesty, since CBS and CW share ownership, and the CW skews younger then any of the networks.  Kid Nation would be a healthy addition to that network.

It would of course lose viewers, but it would probably be considered a success on the CW with aneven lower audience.

Also to be fair, there are two adjustments this year to ratings.

One is that they expanded the number of possible viewers (up nearly 2 million)

And they have announced the rate of last years average DVR use and this years adjustment.  In other words each Neilson box now represents more people.

Last year it was averaged that 8.54 percent of people used DVR's to watch shows within the first 3 days of a shows broadcast.  This year it is averaged that 19% of people will watch shows on DVR's within the first three days.

The networks (as apposed to the viewers) do get this information.

Typically shows that hit a younger audience use DVRs more.

So out of the networks the typical CBS viewer would be statistically less likely to be watching those programs on a DVR opposed to watching it on live broadcast.
