Canadian Idol
« on: June 09, 2007, 04:23:07 PM »
I have to admit that I really enjoyed the first episode of Canadian Idol.  The judges are much better than in the American version.  They seemed to get along well, and having four was actually a good thing.

I'll keep watching this show.

the talent seemed decent.  i'm curious about the whole instruments and if Toronto week will they be allowed to use as well and throughout the entire season??

can these people perform sans instruments??? will they crack without their comfort zone???

I'm just curious if you have watched CI before? I agree with your statement to a certain extent about the judges. But I think Zach is a Simon wannabe and Sass is a Paula wannabe but she doesn't cry instead she acts like she is on drugs or drinking most of the time.

I doubt it. The only other show that has allowed instruments is Australian Idol and they only were allowed to use them during auditions, the Top 100 round and then they had one show during the top 12/10 to use instruments.

Season 5 so far, it has the potential to be like AI5, hopefully they won't pick a terrible winner like Taylor though.

So they narrowed down to the top 22 last night...and took an hour and a half to do so..no more room dividing ...but they did bring people into the room one at a time, two at a time or three at a time..

many of those who made it through were i felt screaming in their final solo attempts.....but I guess they were "that good" during top 100 (well 198) week.

Well they almost got it right, so close. They got the last girl wrong, should have been Jessica instead. Also Ben Griffin got screwed over by lousy talents like Jaydee Bixby and Clinton or Clayton whoever the guy was who butchered Kelly Clarkson.

Canada really sucks at this Idol thing, at least the AI judges pick the right top 24. Canada can't get the right top 22 or the right top 10 either.

Overall a good top 22 though.

Boy’s night at Idol’s first live performances
Fascinating train wreck Tyler keeps it interesting

"We all know how this works," said host Ben Mulroney at the start of last night's Canadian Idol, the first live performance show featuring the top 22, and while Mulroney might have been talking about the voting protocol, some of us have our own dismal intimiations about how things work in the world of Idol.

It's boy's night, and first up is Jaydee Bixby, a 16-year-old from Drumheller whose love of rockabilly and Elvis-derived baritone suggests a man 20 years older. He's a charming performer, but his retro thing is clearly going to rub the judges the wrong way the longer he stays in the show, unless he rocks some Fall Out Boy or Lifehouse, more's the pity.

Clifton Murray, a part-time actor, is probably more in the show's comfort - handsome and smooth, though judges Zack Werner and Jake Gold call him insincere. Derek Hoffman, the self-designated indie rock boy among the guys, tries to sing for the file-sharing crowd, which probably won't see him stick around for long.

Justyn Wesley and Dwight D'Eon do their bit to prove that lounge singing has evolved to thrive in the no-smoking era, and Greg Neufeld sang Maroon 5 with sidelong glances and an anxious hunch that looked like he was about to bolt the stage. Cape Breton's Tyler Mullendore, passed on to the top 22 as the voice of authenticity by the judges, is a fascinating train wreck, stomping and flailing; you want to see him go on just to provide the sand in Idol's vaseline

Andrew Austin does George Michael - not literally, of course - to less than enthusiastic review from the judges. Matt Rapley's take on Stevie Wonder holds on to the melody like water in a sieve, and Brian Melo had a kind of toned-down Dennis DeYoung vibe that works for the judges big time. Liam Styles Chang, representing for the emo crowd, is more showbiz than Derek, and he’ll probably stick around, since this show ain’t big enough for the both of them.

Girls’ night out at Idol
reveals one ballsy singer
By RICK MCGINNIS
Metro Toronto - Wednesday June 27 2007

The first night of Canadian Idol’s Top 22 on Monday revealed at least a credible group of guy singers, with a couple idiosyncratic voices; last night’s Idol was the girls’ turn, and it looks like, thanks to one singer at least, they’re also playing a bigger game. Tara Oram, the only Newfoundlander, was first up with a notably bland walk-through of I Never Promised You A Rose Garden; Martha Joy takes I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing, Aerosmith’s schmaltzy movie theme power ballad, and butters it up like corn on the cob.
Montana Martin Iles, this season’s punkette, rages against the machine — or at least against the enveloping pudding avalanche with a wildly melodramatic performance that’s more Jacques Brel and Tom Jones than Carrie Underwood or Kelly Clarkson; anatomy aside,
it was the most balls-out thing I’ve seen on Idol, and for the first time since Jacob Hoggard, I actually care if someone wins this thing.
Mila Miller would have been the standout singer of the night if Montana had stayed in Quebec. The only thing I took away from Maud Coussa-Jandl’s Cranberries cover is the bemusing spectacle of a Quebecois singer trying to copy the brutally flattened vowels of a  ublin accent. Annika Odegard will be played by Reese Witherspoon if they make a movie out of this season; hopefully, they’ll hire an even better singer to dub her singing. Naomi Joy-Blackhall made me imagine a world where Whitesnake’s David Coverdale is a hot chick; for that I will be forever grateful. Christine Hanlon has a pretty voice but blands out, and Scarlett Burke sings like she’s asking for an extension on her phone bill. Khalila G brings some life back into the show, as a prelude for Carly Rae Jepsen, the pixie from  ission, B.C., who’s been set up as the pick to click. The judges praise her by pointing out the obvious — she’s cute, she’s young — but winsome isn’t thrilling, and Montana is Idol’s only credible claim to originality, if you actually believe that’s what they’re trying to sell.

Canadian Idol hopefuls set on the chopping block for elimination episode
By JENNIFER YANG
for Metro Toronto - Thursday June 28 2007
For the judges, the eliminations last night boiled down to who was memorable and who was not — and it was the former that stayed and the latter that got to (maybe) live on just in our memories. With the boys, the first of the bottom four was Derek Hoffman. A dejected Clifton Murray quickly joined him, looking as though he knew exactly what was coming his way. Justyn Wesley and Andrew Austin were the final two to round out the bottom four guys. When it came time to give the bad news to the ladies, the first to make the losers’ pile was Mila Miller. Naomi-Joy Blackhall was next and then Maud Coussa-Jandl and Christine Hanlon  completed last night’s bottom eight. When Ben Mulroney asked the judges for their predictions, they all seemed reluctant to hazard
a guess. Zack Werner, whose birthday was yesterday, unhappily confessed that sweet Christine and charming Maud were probably
leaving. Farley Flex agreed with Zack by speaking in opposites — he said Naomi and Mila were probably staying. As for the guys, a stuttering Sass Jordan chose Justin and Andrew as the likeliest contestants headed for the chopping block. And after a very lengthy
pause, Jake Gold said he preferred to see Andrew and Derek stay. Clifton is the first to learn he’s safe and he receives the news with a huge sigh of relief. Andrew is also left in the running. So Derek and Justin are hitting the road, with Justin overly anxious to do so, and almost prematurely walking off stage before Ben calls him back. With the gals, Zack and Farley get it right — Christine and Maud are voted out, with Naomi-Joy and Mila staying behind.

I pretty much agree with you except I like Brian. I hate Jaydee and Tyler and want them both to go home along with Clifton. One of those two is going to take a spot from someone else.

After last nights performances.....I'm thinking it will be a LONG season...and there will be a male winner...Man do these people stinks...and I've never heard the judges be so rude and go off on the them so much...even the audience really didn't boo the judges comments....

My thoughts for bottom four:

Annika
Tara
Scarlett
Naomi

Going home...

Scarlett and Annika

I thought all the girls were bad really with the exception of Carly Rae, she has a real shot at winning it. But yes I do think a male will win as well. I think the girls have a problem with song choice.

I think Naomi and Scarlett will go home.
