I just looked at the AR1 team pictures. The individual about to jump is definitely DREW, not ZACH.

Actually Slowwatch is correct.  It is Zach.

On a freeze frame you can even match the same clouds.

When Derek and Drew jumped hours later, there was far less cloud cover.

What I don't understand is why the editors used that footage.

Sure Teri & Ian didn't jump in that first episode in Season three, but they could have used footage of John Vito & Jill (who were in blue).  Its not like they didn't have enough footage.  They jumped first and had a ton of footage of them both jumping, during the jump and arriving on the ground.

If I could post pictures I would show the difference.

Actually, MSWOOD, you need a lesson in AR1. If you noticed, my note stated that it was DREW from AR1, not DREW from AR3. And it is DREW from AR1. For proof, I went back and reran my AR1 tapes on fastforward until I reached Episode 7, where the first DETOUR out of the pit stop at Sant'Agata Bolognese was a choice of GLIDE or BIKE. Kevin and Drew chose Glide and had to wait for Rob and Brennan to complete first. Kevin went into the tow plane and DREW was all alone in the glider, with shots matching the screenshots. This took place at the Aeroclub Volovolistico Ferrarese. You can look it up.

However, you are right that SLOWHATCH was correct in identifying the top screenshot in post #268 as from Italy, AR1, episode 7. My apologies to SLOWHATCH for an earlier version here in which I misunderstood that posting.

Cool its no big deal.  I was going off your statement that the person getting ready to jump wasn't Zach but Drew (I did figure you ment Drew from Season one).  But of course the only jumping Drew did was the swinging Bungee style jump in Africa, while they never jumed from the glider, that he could barely squeeze into (I do love his stories aboutt he old pilot of the glider and its string to navigate).

So far with the spoilers we have it does seem that Charla & Mirna are taking advantage in getting off of transportation early.  Whether they go as far as Peter & Sarah and get escorted through customs remains to be seen.  THough it would explain some of the sizeable leads they have in the locations after arriving on a plane.

And going from what I could see of of old copies of season 5, they might have then as well.

I personally have no problem with it.  Its not cheating, it isn't binding the rules.  Just as senior teams can legitimately save money on the race by takin gadvantage of their age at certain sites, Charla using her legitamte disability to help her team is perfectly fair (and I am not a fan of this team, well not Mirna anyway).

I have a much bigger problem with needing a "Doctoro" and hold the boat for me, or get me booked as a priority standby for medical reasons compared to people on standby ahead of you (both occured in season 5).

But they do bleed considerable amounts of time in running and walking tasks. And her "special" shoes are only really going to be effective (if at all) on solid level surfaces (pavement, concrete, ect).  Fields, dirt roads, ect are going to slow them down a lot.

Also the race never lets teams when arriving at the final city get a custom advantage (at least in previous seasons), the regular legs, yes.  Final no.  So I see that being a serious issue for them on the last leg.  If they make it that far :snicker:

It's hard to tell from the BQ photo; they might be working with "tongs" or "nippers" (see here; at the bottom of the page is also a picture of some farriers aprons which look a lot like chaps. I know that makes no sense because R/A chose the medal task, but I thought I'd throw it in anyway). Also, according to this article, they're probably domestic rather than wild horses; wild horses have better nutrition and their hooves need less care. (kinda makes me wish I'd made it to the end of the years-long waiting list for the horseshoeing class at my old alma mater; it was one of the most popular classes, even for non-ags  :ride:  ;D)

Slowhatch --excellent job on the Punta finds this AM!

Now I don't know wild/tame horses -- but I do know that Fernando and Whirley said that "they bring in the wild horses" before the big cattle roundup starts--apparently that's a major big deal there.

And in the picture--looks like they are nearly sitting on that poor horse who really didn't want his hooves cleaned anyway, thank you very much.
The only horse whose hooves I ever cleaned was not wild at all, and very politely lifted his hooves up for me, IIRC....

Long way of saying...I'm thinking WILD! :mechbull:

This promo shot is puzzelling.  Even if C&M arrived on the first flight to Quito it would have been about 2 hours past sunset when they landed.

So when could this have been taken?  Did they get taxis from the restaurant in the morning when they had to drive SUV's to the Hacienda?  That can't be so.  It would have to be after they left the Hacienda and returned to Quito in Leg 2.

But that messes up my timeline!   :umn:

Hmmm....does it look like early morning sunlight?

Maybe TPTB didn't want the teams to drive in Quito--so they taxi to the Equator monument (they are SO close--how could they not go? :js:) and then get their SUV's there for the drive to Yanahurca.

I really want a little more action in/around Quito--can you tell?

the caption  ( for the picture above) says " Charla & Mirna arrive at a challenge site" if that helps?  Double ewwww to Charla's sweater.. again and again. I think peach mentioned that maybe it was too bulky to pack?

Oh no--I think it is perfect travel wear! Lightweight, packable, easy to wash, neutral color for mix-and-match, stain resistent--what WAS she thinking?!

Unless she plans to leave it behind when she reaches the hot countries--I think she'll be sorry when she has to carry it around-- and the other teams may be sorry to see her coming. Looks itchy too !

Sorry Charla--I still love you...

I think it looks like sun-rise in that pic.. maybe the flight was delayed and they arrived at 5am-6am..

Me too !

I think it could fit in like this:

Teams are released from the restaurant in lumps of three at say 8:00, 8:30, and 9:00 am.  They take taxis from there to the first challenge site.  Charla & Mirna are in the first, no, make that second lump (three taxis are already there).  It does not look like Mitad though (no grassy hillside parking).  Then from that site they get their SUV's to make the 4 hour drive to the Hacienda.  Dave & Mary and the BQs arrive about 12:50 pm.

It's hard to tell from the resolution of that photo, but according to the airport site there's a cartel/concession and all airport taxis should have a "cooperativa" emblem on them.

If they're not airport cabs, then they're definitely Quito cabs: note the black-on-orange color scheme of the plates. I've googled around for a hilltop restaurant, and the only thing I've found so far that matches the pavement and guardrail is this flickr photo (source) of the Panecillo near the restaurant Peach already mentioned.

Thank you Slowhatch! I looked and looked for a parking lot for that restaurant yesterday with no luck. Still not sure it is "rural" enough to match our taxi shot though...And you find the best confirmations! Who knew there were whole sites about license tags? ;D

I still want some more DRAMA! as I posted way back. Sunrise is about 6AM so seems like we would have time for a 3-4 hour task--we need more than one Yanahurca task for sure, IMO. The in  Quito or nearby options (in case we get an early AM task) could maybe include these from way back...I'll repost them in case it rings any bells for anyone. There is also a basilica that can be climbed. Of course, I'm still hoping for the Equator!

Has anyone found parking for the cable car (telerifico)?

In or nearby Quito:
---There is a cable car--(remember the "emergency/exit rapel down from a cable car from a previous season?)
---There is also
Quote
Quote
Bungee jumping.- Is practiced every Sunday morning through Andes Bungee. Tel. 2524796
.
--- And there is Paragliding;

Quote
Quote
Where else can you paraglide from a volcanic peak a half-hour from a major metropolitan center? Several paragliding schools can be found within an hour of Quito. You can take a week-long training course, or entrust yourself to an experienced pilot on a tandem flight. Flights last around 10-25 minutes depending on the air currents, take place in the morning for maximum airlift. According to aficionados, trying to imitate a condor feels surprisingly natural - and you certainly won't get any better views.

(Escuela Pichincha de Vuelo Libre.- Address: Carlos Endara Oe3-60 and Amazonas. Tel. 2256592. Complete courses offered)
---and there is an active volcano (Guagua Pinchincha) on the outskirts of town with crater walks available

I think you got it Slowhatch.  Here is a GE of Pim's Panecillo, the restaurant that Peach found.  If the taxis are parked on the uphill side of the road then the shadows they cast would be consistent.  Also, the horizon seems to match in this tilted view.  I think the lower red arrow in your taxi image points to Mirna's shadow!

This would indicate that a lot of taxis may have been summoned and are waiting at the restaurant.  If this location is correct then the time is about 8ish.

So what's the consensus: the racers arrive in Quito, hit hours-of-operation, spend the night at Pim's, get up early the next day and do the "very unpleasant" task BVM mentioned, then get cars and drive to the ranch. Is that about it?

NICE guys! (Y'all have been on a roll the last couple of days!)

Great pics Chateau!

Forgot that the leaving times would be dependent on the 12 hours after arrival. So do y'all think they'll go do anything?? before they get on the road? I know they have to get the SUV's somewhere, but we want excitement for the rating wars!

I thought the unpleasant task was at Yanahurco--but horsies don't quite fit...

GEORGIAPEACH, I don't think there is any 12 hour wait as a result of a pit stop at the restaurant; that is at Yanahurco. What must happen is an hours-of-operation bunching combined with some mechanism like pulling numbers from a board to penalize the later team arrivals at the restaurant and give the first arrivals a head start.
