Racing Report Legs #1-12 Transportation/ Navigation
« on: November 30, 2006, 10:59:33 PM »
Okay after rewatching all 11 episodes and all the Insider Clips, I have compiled a list of of various Transportation issues.

They are Vehciles Problems when teams are driving, Public Transportation problems (cabs, Buses, Boats), and the most imporant Self Navigation issues (which will be now broken down with not only teams getting lost, but teams relying on cabs to follow, teams following other teams, and teams getting locals of "ferns" to guide them.

VEHICLE PROBLEMS (Teams driving themselves)

So far this is a fairly easy one.

Leg Two:

Tyler & James get a flat tire (a local changes tire)
David & Mary get stuck (not on main street, but trying to get across a dirt path to the Detour Route Marker, a replacement vehicle is sent to them).
Lyn & Karlyn dead Battery (has to be Cranked started)
Kellie & Jamie dead Battery (Has to be Cranked started)
Erwin & Godwin dead Battery (has to be push started
Erwin & Godwin stuck  (locals push them out)

Leg 7:
Rob & Kimberly's car wont go into gear (A replacement vehicle is brought out to them).

*  Dustin and Kandice's car is not included, there was no problem with their car, there was a problem with the driver.

Leg 10:
Rob & Kimberly's car breaks down ( a Replacement vehicle is brought out to them)

Leg 11:
Rob & Kimberly's car gets a flat (A local helps them get the jack, so they can change the tire).

And thats been it for vehicle problems.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

This is a listing of Cabs taking someone to the wrong location, Cab's or buses over charging, Cabs lost, boats with crew error).  This isn't a listing for cabs that just didn't drive fast.

This  list is a little bit longer:

Leg 1:

Dustin & Kandice are dropped off at wrong location (should be Gold House)
Erwin & Godwin are dropped off at wrong location (should be Gold House)
Bilal and Saeed driver doesn't know where Forbidden City is (I assume language difficulty)
Lyn & Karlyn dropped off at wrong gate to Forbidden City
Duke & Lauren dropped off at wrong gate to Forbidden City
David & Mary dropped off at wrong gate to Forbidden City
Vipol & Arti driver doesn't know Forbidden City (is a language difficulty)

Leg 2:

Tyler & James taken to wrong location (not the temple)

Leg 4:

This one is special. Teams weren't provided a written location but only had a verbal clue.  So in cases like Lyn and Karlyn who don't get a proper location to the driver, I can't blame the driver.  David and Mary though have the driver listen (has does Rob & Kimberly) and both those drivers get it wrong.

Erwin & Godwin cab lost getting to Hanoi
Rob & Kimberly cab lost in Hanoi (this is the 2CD cab, the first one wasn't given a location just to follow James & Tyler.  The cab's inability to keep up in traffic isn't his fault)
David & Mary cab lost in Hanoi
Tyler & James's boat didn't pick up its anchor.
*  Normally a slower going vehicle wouldn't be listed.  But this is like if a cab drove most of the way with its emergency break on.  Its not driving the speed limit or slower, its crew error.

Leg 5:

Tyler & James bad cab lost twice in Chennai trying to get to buys station.  They settle with bus stop.
Dustin & Kandice  Cab gets a flat tire
Tyler & James get charged 6 dollars more then Kimberly and Rob (who they are driving to the airport with).  Its the first reported over charging of the race (though in some seasons #1 in India and #5 in an African country its far worse, just to keep perspective).

Leg 8:

David & Mary's cab gets lost going to the Black Angel.
Lyn & Karlyn's cab gets lost going to the Black Angel.
Erwin & Godwin's cab gets lost going to the Black Angel.
Erwin & Godwin's cab runs out of gas and must be pushed to a gas station.
Godwin's cab runs low on gas and must pull over and fuel up.
Dustin's cab runs low on fuel and must pull over and fuel up.
Lyn's cab runs low on fuel and must pull over and fuel up.
Rob & Kimberly's cab gets lost going to the Pit Stop.

Leg 9:

Rob & Kimberly's cab gets lost going to the school.

And that is the last of the Public Transportation problems.  Though they are some examples of cab's getting lost in other episode, they weren't riding in those cab's but using them to navigate for them.  They will be listed in a seperate section.

And we get to the big one, and probably one of the most important aspects of the race as a whole.

SELF NAVIGATION

This is only for motorized vehicles (I am not going to include any team lost while rowing a boat).

And a general note.  In most cases Teams are lost as soon as they get into a town.  Usually its get directions or a map very quickly.  There is only one time I am counting an occurance of a team arriving and the time it takes them to get directions or a map as being lost.  It will be noted.

Teams that immediately grab a a "fern" (say at the airport), or hire a cab to follow without getting lost first are not included in this list and will be in the "Fern" section.

Leg 1:

Rob & Kimberly go past on ramp to freeway in Seattle
Erwin & Godwin go past on ramp to freeway in Seattle.

Bilal & Saeed get lost trying to drop off car at Thrifty.
Kellie & Jamie get lost trying to drop off car at thrifty.
Rob & Kimberly get lost trying to drop off car at thrifty
Erwin & Godwin get lost trying to drop off car at thrifty.

Okay we have now got to the airport.  He He.

Vipol & Arti are unable to direct their sidecar to the detour route marker in China.

Leg 2:

Rob & Kimberly get lost going to Terlj
Kellie & Jamie get lost going to Terelj
Tom & Terry get lost going to Terelj
Lyn & Karlyn get lost going to Terelj
Duke & Lauren get lost going to Terelj
Kellie & Jamie after returning to the first route marker get lost again going to Terelj
Kellie & Jamie get lost going to Pit Stop.

Leg 3:

Rob & Kimberly get lost getting to travel agency
They also get briefly lost at the sirport.

Leg 6:

Dustin & Kandice get lost going to Kuwait Towers
Lyn & Karlyn get lost going to Bead Shop
Peter & Sarah get lost going to Bead Shop
Tyler & James get seriously lost going to Detour (total time 4 hours James says)
Rob & Kimberly get lost going to Detour
Dustin & Kandice get lost going to Detour
Peter & Sarah get lost going to Detour (at east 8 hours and never do find it, have to be directed by production staff)
David & Mary get lost going to Pit Stop
Rob & Kimberly get lost going to Pit Stop
Erwin & Godwin get lost going to Pit Stop
Peter & Sarah are directed by Production to Pit Stop (phil needs to get some sleep)

Not a good leg, for anyone, but a bad leg (time lost for) for Tyler & James, and one of the worst navigation legs ever for Peter & Sarah.

Leg 7:

Tyler & James make a mistake waiting to long to get directions, by the time they get to a hotel, teams already have over 10 minutes on them (this is the one exception to the looking for directions or  a map when you first get to a new country that I am counting as a navigation error)

Rob & Kimberly getting to Case Noyal (the post office)
Tyler & James getting to Case Noyal (the post office)
Rob & Kimberly get lost going to the Pit Stop

Erwin & Godwin, David & Mary, and Lyn & Karlyn who are all at this point driving together get lost going to the Pit Stop.

David & Mary by themselves get lost breifly going to the Pit Stop.

This leg had a roadblock that was edited out of the episode.  Based on local on lookers (who had photos and Videos) we can assume this take place after the detour.  Since the teams arrive in the following order.  Dustin & Kandice, Rob & Kimberly, Tyler & James, Erwin & Godwin, and Lyn and Karlyn (they didn't see David & Mary).  This fits the order leaving the detour.  They all left in the same order with the only thing they noticed was that Tyler & James made up some time of the first two teams and that Lyn & Karlyn struggled with it.  But due to the edit, which included having to navigate, we are not for sure where teams might have lost time.  Going to the roadblock, or going to the Pit Stop.

But somewhere after they finished the detour, Kandice and Dustin lost a sizeable lead over Rob & Kimberly and Tyler & James.  What we don't know is if they got lost (my personal belief) or if they just drove painfully slow to perserve the vehicle.  The reason I believe getting lost is that Erwin & Godwin get stuck with the same car for the first part of the next leg, and they apparently have no problem with it.

Leg *:

Special Note-James plots a course to the airport at the beginning of this leg.  The course is accurate so technically he isn't lost.  But it is a significant error in judgment because instead of driving the shortest distance to the airport, he was just retracing their steps from the day before (which again does get them to the sirport), but it is a significant increase in mileage.

Lyn & Karlyn break off from Erwin & Godwin to get to the airport.  We do not know which one took the best route or if one of the two groups got lost.

Leg 9:

Tyler & James get briefly lost trying to find the marked building at the mine company.
Dustin & Kandice get a a little more lost trying to find the marked building at the mine company.
Rob & Kimberly get the most lost trying to find the marked building at the mine company.
Dustin & Kandice get lost driving into Helsinki tot he Olympic Stadium.

Leg 10:

Lyn & Karlyn get lost driving to the Helsinki airport
Erwin & Godwin and Lyn & Karlyn get repeatedily lost going to the Tank School.
Tyler & James get lost going back into Kiev.
Dustin & Kandice get lost going back into Kiev.
Erwin & Godwin and Lyn & Karlyn repeatedily get lost going into Kiev.
Erwin & Godwin get lost going to Dance and Groove, and must intead take the other detour option.

Leg 11:

Dustin & Kandice get lost trying to locate the Antiquette du Sud (and they are already using a cab to guide them).
Rob & Kimberly and Tyler & James get lost trying to locate the Antiquette du Sud (they were following Dustin & Kandice when they got lost and then branched off on their own).
Lyn & Karlyn get lost going to Atlas Studios.
Dustin & Kandice get lost again trying to find Antiquette du Sud (and they now have a "fern" guiding them in the car).
Rob & Kimberly and Dustin & Kandice get lost going to the Detour Route Marker.
Rob & Kimberly just barely drive pass the detour, but see the other vehicles parked and turn around.
Dustin & Kandice get lost going to the Detour.
Rob & Kim get lost on the road to the Pi Stop.

Leg 12:
Tyler & James get lost trying ot find the market in Casablance.
Dustin & Kandice get lost trying to find the market in Casablanca.
Rob & Kimberly get lost trying to find the market in Casablanca.
Lyn & Karlyn get lost trying to find the market in Casablanca.

For a season that doesn't use a ton of teams driving themselves, all of the teams need onstar.  I mean they need it bad.

FERNS

Specifically a fern is any local who guides the teams to a location, so that the stupid american's don't actually have to think (:;).

Its a time honored tradition in the amazing race that perhaps has been used more this season then any other.

Ferns can be used in cars and on foot.  But for this list, it will only be used for teams when they are driving.

There are two different terms I will use to discribe a fern.

1.  A fern who directs - This means the fern is inside the same vehcile as the racers.

2.  A fern who escorts - This means the fern is driving another vehicle and leads them to the location.

Leg 2:
Lyn & Karlyn pick up a english speaking fern who directs them part of the way to Terelj.  They get quickly lost after he gets out.
David & Mary get a fern t o direct them all the way to the Detour marker in Terelj.

Leg 3:
Duke & Lauren get a fern to share a taxi with to direct them in Hanoi.  SHe takes them out of the way to her brothers place.

Leg 6:
Erwin & Godwin, David & Mary, and Lyn & Karlyn get a fern to direct them as a group to the Kuwait Towers.
Dustin & Kandice get a fern to direct them to the Bead Shop.
Erwin & Godwin actually get a police Fern to escort them to the Bead Shop.
Dustin & Kandice get a fern who escorts them to the Detour.
Peter and Sarah say they had a 3 different ferns who each directed tehm to the wrong location :yess:

Leg 9:
Dustin & Kandice get a fern who escorts them to the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki.

Leg 10:

Dustin & Kandice and Tyler & James get a local fern to escort them into Kiev to apartment Building 3.
Lyn & Karlyn get a fern who directs tehm to the Dance and Groove Studio.
Rob & Kimberly get 2 ferns (for the price of 1) who direct them to the Dance and Groove studio.
Rob & Kim use the same 2 ferns to direct them to the Pit Stop.

Leg 11:

Dustin & Kandice get a fern to direct them to the antiquette du Sud.  He gets them more lost
Rob & Kimberly and Tyler & James get a fern to direct them to the Antiquette du Sud.
Lyn & Karlyn get a fern to direct them to Atlas Studios.
Lyn & Karlyn get a fern to direct them part way to the detour route marker.

Leg 12:

Tyler & James get a fern to escort them to the market area in Casablanca.
Dustin & Kandice get a  to direct them to the marked parking at the market in Casablanca.
Dustin & Kandice have the same fern guide them to the airport.

Well that doesn't seem to terrible, does it.  Yes it does.  But it gets Worse.....

.....PAYING CAB DRIVERS TO ESCORT YOU

Again this has a long tradition on the Amazing Race.  But it usually only occurs in dire need.

Since the money teams get for each leg are definetly not planned to pay for escorts.  So this is all paid with most likely by begging, throughout the race.

Leg 6:
Peter & Sarah hopelessly lost reportedly paid for a taxi escort at one time, and still got the wrong location. :jumpy:

Leg 10:
Dustin & Kandice and Tyler & James split the cost to pay a cab to escort them to the Tank School.
Rob & Kim pay a cab to escort them to the Tank School.
Erwin & Godwin pay a cab to escort them part of the way to the tank school (it isn't clear if Lyn & Karlyn share the expense or just follow for free).
Rob & Kimberly pay same cab to escort them to Apartment #3 in Kiev (and this includes the time waiting for a replacement vehicle).
Dustin & Kandice pay for a cab to escort them to the Pit Stop.
Lyn & Karlyn pat a cab to escort them to the Pit Stop.
Erwin & Godwin pay a cab to escort them to teh Pit Stop (it isn't clear if htey get rid of hte cab escort when they are directed down a closed street).

(:;)Damn thats alot of cabs for one episode.

Leg 11:
Tyler & James pay a cab to escort them to the airport  :rotf: (to the airport) :rotf:
Dustin & Kandice pay for a cab to direct them to Antiquette du Sud (he gets lost) :rotf:
Tyler & James pays a cab to escort them part of the way to the detour route marker.  They had to drive themselves 15 of the 22 miles to the detour routemarker.

Leg 12:

Lyn & Karlyn pay a cab to escort them to the market place in Casablanca.

So between teams getting lsot naturally, teams using Ferns to navigate and get escorted and teams paying cabs to escort them.  Surely teams don't ever have to follow other teams right,   .......
