Title: American Idol Top Five Review
Post by: Jeffrey Scott on May 03, 2006, 08:50:53 AM
Hey all, the news server is still down so I decidd to post the article here till it's back up. Enjoy!

Before I begin my article I need to clear up an erratum from my last article. The song Taylor chose to sing originally was ‘Try A Little Tenderness’ by Otis Redding. The song he ultimately sang was ‘Just Once’ by James Ingram.

What amazed me though was that wasn’t the thing I had my chops busted for by the readers (the editor just about had my head for lunch). A good number of loyal fans that like to ‘Vote for the Worst’ grilled me for saying that Taylor was chosen because he is the worst singer. Truly my intention was not to mislead anyone so I will bow to the onslaught of that site’s loyal fans and relate why Taylor is the next candidate on VFTW.

One reader related the reasoning this way, “Vote for the worst has picked up Taylor, not because they think he is bad, but because they think American Idol has been unfair to him too. They believe he does not fit their mold, and they are doing everything in their power to sabotage his performances.” I have to agree with this as was indicated in my article. Despite what people think, I actually like Taylor.

Sorry again for the errata’s. I promise not to write my articles after a long night binge of pizza’s and Coke’s ever again.

American Idol Top Five Review

Elliott is the first to perform. Born in the year 1978 he chooses the song “On Broadway” by George Benson. It begins bland and flat, but he gets better as the song goes along, seems to be his trademark. Elliott does end brilliantly, Randy and Paula both agree with me. Simon says it was not his best performance and the song seemed a little ‘disjointed. The second song is ‘Home’ by Michael Bubli. He sounded either very out of breath or nervous as the song begins, but he calms down quickly and pulls off a nice job. Randy thinks the song was very tender, Paula says she could feel the richness in it and Simon just says he should not sing a song with the lyrics “I want to go home”. **/**

Paris is born in 1988 and decides to go with a song from Prince, “Kiss”. I was very impressed with the beginning of her song, and her performance never wavered from there. She’s got great voice potential. Tonight Simon and I don’t agree to often, he thinks the song is screechy and annoying. Despite this, Paris thanks Simon because she appreciates “all the opinions”. Next up is “Be Without You” by Mary J. Blige. Paris’ trademark as far as I’m concerned is to really let me down. I know she’s a good singer but I didn’t like this performance very well. The beginning was too raspy for me and the rest of the performance was just okay. Randy says she ‘rocked it’. Paula says she’s ‘got it’. And again, Simon goes against me and says Paris did rather well. ***/**

1979 is the year Chris was born. He performs “Renegade” by Styx. Listening to the beginning of the song it sounded slightly pitchy, but Chris finds his foothold and does a nice job. The crowd obviously loves him; either that or his fantastic light show! I hope the stagehands win along with Chris when he becomes the next American Idol. Randy practically jumps out of his chair proclaiming, “We’ve got a real hot one tonight!” Simon says his performance was a million times better than anyone else’s. The second song Chris picks is “I Dare You” by Shinedown and Chris is on FIRE!!!!!!! Oh wait, that was the stage and lighting effects. After turning away from the song to listen only, it sounds like Chris is yelling at me, and I really can’t get into it. Considering this is Fox’s pick to win, he needs to bring it more than this, despite his voice problems. **/*

Phil Collins “Against All Odds’ is Katharine’s song choice for her birth year of 1984. If Phil were dead he’d be turning over in his grave, perhaps he’s turning over in bed? What good can be said of this song? Bad, flat, screechy and horribly off key. Hold your ears if you are going to go back and watch the song. Trust me. Simon says the song ran away from her but then goes on to say, “It was by far one of your best performances.” It isn’t until she’s speaking with Ryan that Simon realizes what he said and corrects himself. Katharine redeems herself with her next song, “Black Horse & the Cherry Tree.” She does a superb job. Is it just me or is she trying too hard to sell the ‘cute/sexy’ factor? But I’m only judging her on her songs and this time she does really well. */**

Taylor Hicks picks the 1976 ‘Wild Cherry’ song “Play That Funky Music” and does a great job. I really liked this rendition. I have to admit, he does have a lot of lights and he really gets into it, but the song itself was sung well. Randy and Simon all seem to chastise him because of the dancing and stage acting, but that’s just Taylor. It’s clear why my friends over at VFTW will be voting for him. His next song is ‘Something’ by the Beatles. He gets away with this because the song is on an album that is number six on the top pop catalog chart. This time Taylor really lets go, and gets into it. The old Taylor voice that I love has come back. Simon actually says that Taylor is a very, very good singer. **/***
