Title: Chris Controversy

Idol” fans accuse Daughtry of copying Live version of ‘Walk the Line’
By Associated Press
Friday, March 24, 2006 - Updated: 01:20 PM EST

“American Idol” chat rooms are buzzing over a controversy surrounding Chris Daughtry’s version of “I Walk the Line.”

Judges praised Daughtry for making the song his own when he sang it on the last episode. But some fans say the version was not his own, but ripped off from a version done by the band Live in 2001.

One fan posted a message saying “I just want to punch him in his bald head.”

Another message reads “This guy is a rip off. Judges are plain dumb.”

And a third message reads “Live singer Ed Kowalczyk called and said that he would like his vocal style” back.

Aw c'mon!  For pete's sake...Chris didn't claim it to be his own.  ONly the judges said that.  Hey, Chris got professional coaching by THE great Barry Manilow!!  He helped Chris make it unique for CHRIS.  And it was a WOW performance!  :woohoo:

Anyway, what about the judges always telling the contestants TO MAKE IT YOUR OWN and to not copy-cat it like the original or other artists?
I sure hope this petty technicality doesn' hurt Chris's AI status cuz he's a dang great performer!  :hearts:

Don't get me wrong. I think Chris is very talented. However, I think he's been getting way too much credit for making his songs "his own."  When he did "Higher Ground," he as much as admitted he was using the Chili Peppers' version, and Simon was like, "You made it your own."  No, he didn't.  Same goes for "I Walk the Line" if it's the same as the Live version.

I also think that there is some merit to what Rob said on this week's podcast...I noticed that there was more exciting lighting & stage effects when Chris was singing, but I thought I was just being silly. Now that someone else has mentioned what might be these subliminal messages while Chris performs, I'm not sure that AI is being fair.

I agree also. I also thought it was unfair with the special attention Chris has been getting.

Boy has this thread skewed off in a different direction.

As Simon is so well to point out, this is a singing competition. I don't care where Chris gets his 'act' from. Just as long as he can sing the song.

AMEN! And he did just that with Walk the Line.  I thought it was the best rendition ever...even better than J Cash's!!  I loved the way Chris sang it!  I hope he includes it in his first CD!  :jam:

Chris is doing Great  :jumpy: I like that he sings his songs with the rocker theme.  At least it is something new to hear not the same sounding songs we always hear.

I like Chris alot :jumpy:     However, the problem for me is I have epilepsy and when he sings and has the flashing lights or strobe lights, I have to look away.  Because of that, I can't watch his performance.   :(         I really wish movies, singers, etc would take into account those with seizure disorders.

Interesting note RJ, and you are right. I've got a friend with epilepsy also and one time we were on a roller coaster that went into a tunnel with strobbing lights. I teased him because he was closing his eyes just before going into the tunnel, till I found out why he was doing that.

Yes, I really need to be careful.  I hate it during Halloween when neighbors have strobe lights.   Just wish there was something that can be done about it. :(

There can, sneak up to the strobe lights at Halloween during the day. Take a hammer. And viola! problem solved.

I think its lame that AI thinks they have to explain he got that version from Live. Man the babies on the internet making a big hoopla over a version of the song. In reality every week each contestant is doing a version of a song mostly likely done by someone else in the history of time.  So when the judges say you made it your own - they aren't implying the contestant created a new version.  (:;) (:;) (:;) (:;) (:;) (:;)

Things like this get me worked up and no its not my time of the month but based on the complaints from others that Chris supposedly claimed to create a new version of an old song -- its someone else's time of the month.

There said it.  :meow: :meow: :meow: :meow: :meow:

Surprising to read the controversy of Chris.  I like Chris.  I think he is a good singer.  I liked his songs from the Stevie Wonder week and I Walk the Line.  He has great stage presence and is nice looking and I bet my money that he will win.  I predict this is the year a rock and roll type singer will win seeing as the previous winners have come from Top 40 (Kelly) R&B? (Reuben), Different Style (Fantasia), Country Pop (Carrie).  :hearts: :woohoo: :woohoo: :hearts: :hearts:

There ya go, RJ!  Good solution, Dr Jeff!

I wasn't aware till now about the flashing or strobe lights bothering people with seizure disorders.  Performers/producers should definitely consider this problem & accomodate somehow.

Boy the Chris Controversy must've died down, huh?!  Hope so, cuz I still feel Chris had every right to sing that song the way he did.  That was his best performance and as I've said, I loved the version of Walk the Line he sang...I don't care who performed it before him!!  He rocked!  :cheer:
