TORONTO (CP) - MTV officially returns to Canadian television March 21, the first day of spring.
On that day, CTV's specialty channel Talktv will be rebranded as MTV, with a promised 71 per cent Canadian content in prime time. CTV has also applied to the CRTC for another digital-tier licence for a second music television outlet.
Last week, it was announced that the Canadian MTV would have a flagship talk series called MTV Live, with hosts to be revealed at a later date. The announcement was the latest in a series of steps recognizing the new partnership between CTV and the U.S.-based MTV, considered one of the most valuable media brands in the world, especially in the youth market. Plans also call for the main CTV network to be involved in other programming with MTV.
MTV first came to Canada in 2001 but disappeared in 2004 when then Canadian partner Craig Broadcasting sold its major TV assets to CHUM.
