Woodside guy 'Amazing'

Tyler MacNiven might just be the most colorful contestant ever to pop up on "The Amazing Race."

The reality show premieres Feb. 28 with MacNiven teaming up with L.A. friend BJ Averell.

If MacNiven isn't familiar to you, he's the guy who made news back in 1998 when he was a senior at Woodside High School and embarked on a "Tyler for Student" campaign to get admission to Stanford University.

It didn't work.

MacNiven, whose family owns Buck's restaurant in Woodside, graduated from UC Santa Cruz in 2003 and garnered some print interest after he walked the length of Japan and made the documentary "Kintaro Walks Japan."

Now he's trying to use that chutzpah and travel experience to capture the race title.

"The Amazing Race" premieres Feb. 28 on CBS Channel 5 with a two-hour opener at 9 p.m.
Following a dismal season featuring families, "Amazing Race" returns to its two-person teams. Eleven teams will compete through five continents, with stops in the Middle East, Moscow and Sicily among others, to win a $1 million prize.

Where did the picture of BJ and the producers come from? (quick, get that woman some vitamin D! ) I didn't see it on MySpace; if you have to sign up to see all the pictures then I'm out of luck. Also, GoogleVideo lists the Kintaro video as 06 June 2005, before the application deadline; I have no proof, but I'm guessing these two got in through the side door rather than mailing their apps the traditional way.

'Amazing Race' Contestant's Plane Problem
Charges of sneaking on flight in '99 were later dropped
February 23 2006

'Amazing Race' contestants B.J. Averell and Tyler MacNivenLOS ANGELES --
B.J. Averell will be instantly recognizable come Tuesday, when viewers will see him and teammate Tyler MacNiven compete in the latest edition of "The Amazing Race." The two scruffy-bearded guys, instantly branded "hippies" by their fellow competitors, appear to be having a great time running the race's first leg.

Averell, however, was not always such a happy traveler.

In 1999, Averell, now 26, was charged with trespassing and disorderly conduct after sneaking aboard a Delta Express flight, the Philadelphia Daily News reports. The charges were later dropped.

Averell was a student at Harvard at the time, and he was headed from Boston to Philadelphia (he grew up in nearby Collingswood, N.J.) for Thanksgiving. He had a ticket for the flight but wasn't allowed to board because he arrived at the gate too late.

Somehow, he managed to sneak on, hiding in the plane's lavatory. He was discovered before the flight departed and escorted off by security.

Viewers can see if Averell and his teammate apply the lesson to arrive at the airport on time when "The Amazing Race" premieres on CBS Tuesday (Feb. 28).

'Amazing Race' winners eye film career (

By TARA MERRIN -- Calgary Sun

Hot off their big win on The Amazing Race, “the hippies” are flying high.

California friends BJ Averell, 26, an on-line tutor, and Tyler MacNiven, 25, a filmmaker, narrowly beat Jeremy Ryan and Eric Sanchez, in the $1 million US race around the world.

While it’s been months since the show finished filming, they were not able to share their victory with friends and family until Wednesday’s finale aired.

“People would always ask what I was doing with piles of money under my mattress. I would just say I got a job as a dancer,” jokes BJ before adding, “It was really tough.”

Now it’s out in the open, the brilliant Bohemian buddies, who speak 36 languages between them, are trying to determine what to do with their new riches.

Tyler says he plans to buy a houseboat, treat his girlfriend to Lasek eye surgery and make movies.

“We intend on using the money for our future creative projects like documentaries that will expose certain political leaders — not to mention any names — President (George)Bush,” he laughs.

The pair have been approached by an “unnamed” cable network to host a travel show. “It’s still in the works, but it will be called BJ and Tyler Do the World or, if not, Tyler and BJ Do the World — one of those,” says BJ.

As far as their rivals Eric and Jeremy, Tyler says they are all friends despite some dirty tactics.

“We had to do those things because every second counted,” says Tyler. “They have taken it really well.”

According to some Internet photos — which show the hippies and the “frat boys” partying together — the foursome have remained, some would say, oddly close.

“They’re wax sculptures of us — Eric and Jeremy were posing those,” says BJ, adding the rumours he and Tyler are gay are false. “Tyler lives with his girlfriend in San Francisco.”

Adds Tyler, “I almost proposed to him on The Early Show, but Ray (Whitty) and Yolanda (Brown-Moore) beat us to it.”

The hippies were probably this season’s most memorable team, and they fought their way to the top, walking away with the million-dollar prize. Read on to find out what they’re doing next, where they wish they could have gone, and what distracts them.

Amazing Hippies Make Bucks, Not War!
by Rochell D. Thomas

Brains beat brawn when BJ Averell and Tyler MacNiven won the $1 million prize in The Amazing Race 9. But it turns out the close friends' fun-loving hippie image almost did them in — off camera. How? Read on. We never really saw you guys having to go through customs, but you obviously had to. Did you ever get delayed?
Tyler MacNiven: In Japan we got held up in customs because we fit the hippie stereotype. Often you'll have hippie guys try to smuggle in drugs because they're very hard to get in Japan. In customs there we had to go into this backroom to get strip-searched — and it was all in Japanese, like some movie where these officers were getting us naked and going through our bags.
BJ Averell: Dogs were sniffing through our bags.
Tyler: That really did happen. We were in the middle of the race, too, so we were frantically trying to get through the strip search, but luckily we didn't have any contraband on us at the time. So you're nervous because you're on the race, but they think you're nervous because you hid something in a cavity.
Both: Exactly! What does "TTOW" stand for?
BJ: Truth, justice and the American way. No, for real.
BJ: It's basically the Chinese word for "good times." We went to China in 2002 and ended up with these awesome shirts that randomly said TTOW on them. In Asian countries, they like English characters and it didn't mean anything at the time, but since we bought the shirts and have been yelling out the phrase on national television, it has become our power call to the universe. Tell the truth — by the end of the race, could your orange pants stand on their own?
Tyler: Yeah. They're horizontal corduroy and we realized that they were the perfect pants to race around the world in, because of the wind-resistance decrease. Did you have them fumigated?
Tyler: We would wash them at every pit stop.
BJ: Tyler was sort of like the laundry lady in Sicily. He would go to the sink and use up several bars of soap just scrubbing our clothes clean. You'd be surprised how dirty and smelly it gets you. In Australia you raced to the pit stop in your underpants. Why didn't you put on your pants in the car?
BJ: Well, it was partly our overconfidence. I thought we were going to be racing for first place, not realizing that Ray and Yolanda had already come in first and that one of the last three teams might get all of their stuff taken away. It was basically a mad rush from the detour to the pit stop. I was driving and we didn't really have time to put on shoes, socks and pants. You mention you were a bit overconfident. How did you react when you found out Fran and Barry had seen more of the world than you had?
Tyler: We were still confident we could beat them, because they're so old! [Laughs]
BJ: And the hair on Barry's shoulders slowed him down, because of the wind resistance.
Tyler: Confidence actually does help you a lot on the race, because a lot of times you don't know where the other teams are, and if you just assume you're in first place, you'll tend to be more relaxed and not make as many mistakes. If you think you're right behind somebody or somebody's right behind you, you may make a decision that ends up costing you a lot of time. I thought you might be out of the race in Oman, when BJ got so tired from digging that he lay down. BJ, did you literally cry?
BJ: I did lay down and cry! [But] there were no tears! It was too hot in the desert for tears. At first, I was running from pile to pile, but after a while in the sun, it starts to wear on you. We just knew we had to keep going, so I would flop down on a pile of sand and keep digging in that pile. Did you have a mantra to keep yourselves going?
Tyler: Luckily he had his partner Tyler cheering him on from the sidelines and giving him water.
BJ: I knew that when I finally found that buried oven, I would be able to get Tyler to shut up. Tyler, it seems like BJ did a lot of the hard stuff — digging in the hole, running with the flags.
BJ: Yeah. We split the million 60-40.
Tyler: We switched off roadblocks back and forth, so it was all chance who got which roadblock. The ones that looked hard were just because it took BJ so long to do them. Mine were actually just as difficult. I just made them look easy. OK, then, in your humble opinion, who had the hardest task?
Tyler: I think BJ did the hardest task, digging through the mounds.
BJ: Tyler did the search through the jail in Perth. That seemed really tough!
Tyler: When we got to the airport, that was, like, another roadblock, getting the earliest ticket. It would take a very long time, and it's so fast on the show, but that's where my and BJ's strength came through. We could squeeze onto just about any flight. When you picked up the hitchhiker, how long was he with you? And what happened to his friend?
BJ: Only one guy was hitchhiking. It was great having him there because he knew a shortcut to get to the airport. When we got to the gas station, if we didn't have him with us, we might not have been able to exchange our American dollars for Omanian dollars.
Tyler: BJ picked up a girl in Brazil that wasn't shown. We met her while we were waiting for the repelling to open up.
BJ: There was a little romance with Priscilla in Brazil-a. She was my Brazilian girlfriend. Why did you start lying to people?
BJ: [When we tried to start] the MoJo rumor, that was basically for fun. Obviously there's no rumor going around other than the one we were spreading right there. The only other people who would be involved in the rumor would be Jeremy, Joseph and Monica, and they were all right there.
Tyler: We say a lot of crazy things and do a lot of pranks, and that one just so happened to make it on national television. What will you spend your money on?
Tyler: VirginGalactic is offering tickets to outer space for $200,000 and after taxes we'll have about $260,000 each, so we're thinking that since we've never experienced that final frontier, we might go there. No, really.
Tyler: I'm thinking of buying a boat and sailing around for a while. A floating house! That way, when my lease is up I could still be living in San Francisco, but be able to sail around whenever I want.
BJ: I'd be more up for getting a house house. One that's on ground. Which team would you travel with again if given the chance?
BJ: We have visited Eric and Jeremy down in Florida, are seeing Wanda and Desiree here in New York, then are visiting Lake and Michelle in Mississippi. We would like to see Fran and Barry and go skiing with them.
Tyler: MoJo invited us to go wakeboarding with them.
BJ: Ray and Yolanda offered to run a track meet with them. Did you really visit Eric and Jeremy?
BJ: Yeah, we actually watched an episode with them. We would totally like to hang out with those guys in the future, because we shared this experience of racing around the world with them. Which episode did you four watch together?
BJ: We watched the one in Siracusa, where we come in first and they come in second. We would have rather been there for an episode where they came in first and their friends were happy, but they were like, "Oh, you Hippies!" What was your favorite leg of the race?
BJ: My favorite leg was Yolanda's leg. That was a very "Eric and Jeremy" comment, by the way.
Tyler: Our favorite leg was the last leg because we won a million dollars!

Talking to: BJ & Tyler
Monday, May 22, 2006

They traveled through five continents, 10 countries and more than 59,000 miles -- practically the last half without any possessions.

But in the end, BJ Averell (a native of Collingswood) and Tyler MacNiven crossed the finish line first and shared the $1 million prize for winning "The Amazing Race."

For the Hippies, as the best friends were known, it was just the latest international adventure. A day after their victory aired, they talked about eating crickets in Thailand, the competition with the Frat Boys and Team MoJo and what they'd like to do with their winnings.

Q. You're probably the first team to lose two non-elimination legs and still win the race. How did you pull that off?

Tyler: Each time we got non-eliminated and lost all the possessions we were carrying, it was like shedding a snake skin or emerging from a cocoon. We felt recharged after the second time, we were kind of hoping for a third non-elimination.

Q. What does TTOW-- the catchphrase you spoke often -- mean?

Tyler: It's like the Chinese word for good time. It's our power call.

BJ: It's a word we like to say because we both have shirts that say TTOW that we bought when we were in China. It was the first time we traveled through a country together in 2002.

Q. What was going on between you and MoJo?

BJ: I think things just escalated very quickly in Oman based on very small things. They went to our car and pretended to leave us money after we got all ours taken away. And after we found out they were just pretending, we thought it was kind of cruel of them and pointless and in return we said, if you guys are going to do that then we're going to Yield you if we get the chance, especially if it's advantageous.

But then later we found out the reason they had pretended to was that Eric had told them that we wanted to Yield them even though we didn't say that until afterward.

Q. How did you get along with (second-place finishers) Eric and Jeremy?

BJ: In the beginning we were trading off first and second with them and then we went on our separate path, trying out different places, until we finished first at the end. They were great competition.

Tyler: One of the things we had in common with the Frat Boys was they kept their cool a lot of the time. We viewed them as buffer versions of ourselves.

BJ: At first we underestimated them, but then we got to see they consistently did well. We knew they would be tough to beat, but at the same time we'd all have fun. At hotels, we'd go up to the pool and make up our own detours and roadblocks. I don't think it would have been a complete race around the world without the Frat Boys.

Q. BJ, what were you thinking when you got out of the car without your shoes and tried to walk on water racing for the mat in Australia?

BJ: Well I do look a lot like Jesus (laughs) ... I think one thing that helped Tyler and I a lot was we were super confident. A lot of time on "The Race," you don't know where the other teams are, and most of the time we would assume we were in first place. When we were racing for that mat in Australia, we didn't realize Ray and Yolanda had come in. So I was thinking we had to get there for first place, so we were running down this hill and Eric and Jeremy were in front of us. They started to go down those same rocks and then saw there was a little bridge. They decided not to go that way, but if I did we could still get first place. We didn't realize we were racing for second, third and fourth place. Confidence was something that helped us a lot, and then sometimes it didn't.

Q. How did the crickets taste?

Tyler: They tasted a lot like Doritos, but instead of avocado dip it's more like insect gut dip. Also, the legs as you eat them slice up your mouth.

Q. What are you going to do with your winnings?

Tyler: Virgin Galactic is offering tickets to outer space for $200,000 and since after taxes I'll have about $260,000, I think, 'Let's go to space.'

BJ: I might buy a house instead. ... But once Tyler starts talking me into an idea ... and I've never been to space.

Amazing Race Winner Back In the Game
Our post about Competitours (and the chance to win a free European trip this summer) elicited a comment from one Tyler MacNiven, winner of The Amazing Race Season 9. Turns out Taylor's joining the competition:

"Can't wait to race with my super-hero Mother, can't wait to get back into the fun competition, can't wait to crush the other innocent teams," he says. "I decided to sign up for Competitours because races like this are as close as I will (and want) to become to being James Bond."

You hear that, Daily Traveler readers? Tyler MacNiven is taunting your travel prowess!  Enter the Competitours contest on Jaunted and you might just have the opportunity to tour Europe and take on an Amazing Race champion.

Tyler and his Mom did go on Competitours.

Here is one of Tyler's videos from their participation.  It appears from the Competitours  website  ( you make videos of your challenges and those become the basis of your "score".  They say, "Show your on-camera creativity and personality to earn the maximum points...".  Sounds ready-made for Tyler.

I have this vague recollection that I saw something here at RFF about Tyler doing Competitours since Snooky's post ^^, so if this is a repeat, I'm sorry.
