Title: Showtune Show
Post by: Vernie on April 06, 2005, 12:44:33 AM
I am not a big fan of showtunes, but I think tonights show really put the singers to a test of who is really good.  I am not a big Constatine fan, but I thought he did wonderful singing the song that he chose. What do you think?

I also love musicals and showtunes, but they made dreadful choices.

Agreed..what were they thinking..who the hell would pick those songs out of an amazing selection of all time showtunes? What about Porgy & Bess..Hello Dolly..there are just so many.

Here are a few tunes that barely scratch the surface of what they could have chosen to sing and had some fun with too.   }}

Summertime form Porgy & Bess
Ole Man River from Showboat
We Will Rock You From We Will Rock You
If My Friends Could See Me Now from Sweet Charity
Anything from "Grease."
Thank Heaven For Little Girls from Gigi
Dancing Queen From Mam Mia
Some Enchanted Evening From South Pacific
Mame, from the musical Mame
Anything from Jesus Christ Superstar
Luck Be a Lady from Guys & Dolls
Hello, Dolly! from Hello Dolly
Impossible Dream From Man of La Mancha
All That Jazz From Chicago
Money From Cabaret
If I Were a Rich Man From Fiddler on the Roof
Consider Yourself From Oliver!
Rosie from Bye Bye Birdie
Send In The Clowns
Good Morning Starshine
Everything's Coming Up Roses From Gypsy
New York, New York (Frank Sinatra)
Over The Rainbow (Judy Garland)
Memory ("Cats")
Don't Cry For Me Argentina ("Evita")
Sunrise, Sunset ("Fiddler on the Roof")
The Impossible Dream ("Man of La Mancha")

Okay so I went on a bit..but you get my point.. (%#

I just don't get it

But Scott did sing "The Impossible Dream".  I think the problem was that none of them were really passionate about the music and it showed.  A singer above and beyond all others will take a song they think is crap and sing the heck out of it and sell you on it anyway.  I thought Constantine's choice of "My Funny Valentine" was great until I heard the arrangement and then it was, "What the hell?"  And then Paula's comment about how Barbra Streisand doesn't go up for the high note at the end of "People"...Paula is so full of it.  Barbra could hit that note but doesn't because finishing the song the way she does leaves one thinking that maybe "People needing people aren't the luckiest people in the world".

Right on!

I also think 'knowing' a song..having it be familiar to you is key. They should have listened to a cd or whatever of all time best showtunes until they were sick of it...then picked their fav rendition. Imho...Constantine did the best job I think.
