ABOUT STEPH AND KRISTEN

Steph and Kristen are former varsity softball athletes who have played at university and provincial levels, so it goes without saying that they’re tough, focused on winning, and work well as a team. This couple met years ago, but with Kristen on a scholarship in Pittsburgh and Steph in Detroit, it wasn’t until they reconnected after university that the sparks began to fly. At first, they were forced into a long distance relationship for over a year. It didn’t take long, however, for Kristen to persuade Steph to move to Toronto after she graduated from law school.

These two are competitive by nature and plan to use their athletic skills in the race. They can play as a team, but know it is just as imperative to sometimes step up to the plate alone and hit it out of the park.

Steph and Kristen hope to prove that two women can win "The Amazing Race Canada" and would use the prize money to invest in a property together. Steph would also pay off her law school debt and Kristen would use the financial freedom to discover her true passions and pursue them.

More questions from their profile:

Steph:
How did you train for the Race? -We kept up with our consistent workout schedule, re-watched Seasons 2 and 3 of ‘The Amazing Race Canada,’ tried running a few times with weighted backpacks and I learned how to drive stick!

What's the next big thing in your life you'd like to accomplish? - Win the ‘The Amazing Race Canada.’

Why did you choose this as your racing outfit? - We tried to pick clothes that are sporty, super comfortable, but also cute at the same time.

Kristen:
What’s one thing you wish you could bring on the Race? - A stylist to give me that 'I woke up like this' look every AM. I’m going to need all the help I can get.

What's the next big thing in your life you'd like to accomplish? - Win ‘The Amazing Race Canada.

How did you choose your team colour? - We don’t typically wear a ton of colour in our everyday lives, so we tried our best to pick up some colourful tops.

STEPH LECLAIR & KRISTEN MCKENZIE: “Dating” is an  Amazing Race Canada euphemism, but articling lawyer Steph and account executive Kristen have been living together in Toronto for a year and a half.

“We do say ‘dating,’ ‘going steady,’ ‘going out.’” Kristen says. I suggest dating implies showing up at the door with flowers.

“Well, I never got any flowers. What’s up with that?”

They knew each other as children in Toronto, but their relationship began when both were varsity softball athletes in Detroit and Pittsburgh respectively.

Weaknesses? “I’m nervous about a little bit about dancing,” Steph says. “And we’re nervous about directions.”

“I’m the navigator,” Kristen says.

“I think the map will be a challenge,” Steph adds. “Kristen gets motion sick, so she’ll be driving too.”

“We’ll see,” Kristen adds.

“Whatever happens, we’ll be bringing the enthusiasm.”

They would have a target on their back until they played their Express Pass. If I were them I would keep quiet, unless it was late in the race.

I like them but they're probably the most vanilla team of those left

Me too. They have some really cute moments, and I still do love them like I do this cast, but they're essentially the "John Vito & Jill in the F5 of TAR3" or "Brandon & Nicole in the F6 of TAR5" of an amazing cast on a season where everyone left is top-tier.

On the contrary I really dislike both of those other teams  But I get what you mean!

Their win this week was a first in a way :)

Across all franchises, there's been a lack of lesbian teams cast, compared to quite a few of the male variety. And they are the first to win a leg.

A winning team from my hometown! Grew up right next to Kitchener and Guelph. So not literally, but it's all so close together it's like one city.

Solid team all season.

Kind of a "year later" thing the social media just posted. Not mentioned is that they also have a YouTube channel that's since become pretty popular.

Steph and Kristen’s whirlwind year: Travelling the world and hosting ‘The Amazing Race Canada Auditions’
Sheri Block
June 02, 2017

Since winning Season 4 of “The Amazing Race Canada” Steph and Kristen have had a whirlwind year travelling around the world, hosting “The Amazing Race Canada Auditions” and inspiring others to follow their dreams.

The dating couple was the first ever all-female team to take home the grand prize when they were crowned the winners last September.

“One of the most special things for us is definitely the messages we get from not only young girls but from fathers who say, ‘We’ve been trying to tell our daughter since she was a baby you can do anything that guys can but to see a real life example is really powerful,’” says Kristen, who adds, “I get goosebumps.”

After quitting their jobs in order to focus on all the trips they won, the couple has already visited Costa Rica, New York City, Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia, Thailand and Ireland.

“New Zealand, we rented a camper van and drove and slept in it, drove from the north to the south. We’d never traveled like that at all. It was so cool,” says Kristen.

“And Fiji, I’ve never seen a beach like that or water like that in my life. They were all so great and different.”

And even though they could travel at a much more leisurely pace than they did on the race, they say it was hard to completely get out of “race mode.”

“It’s hard to lose that mentality. When we walk by map stores I’m (still) like, ‘We need to get a map’ because that’s what we always had to do or look for the clues. Or if we get lost we say, ‘Oh we would’ve lost that leg for sure,’” says Kristen with a laugh.

They’ve also been travelling around Canada as hosts of “The Amazing Race Canada Auditions,” premiering June 5 on Bell Fibe TV1.

The third season of the special features Steph and Kristen visiting Ottawa, Montreal, Halifax, St. John’s and back home to Toronto to share their Top 10 audition videos from last season. The couple also had the chance to meet some of the hopefuls, who re-enacted their original auditions.

“They (got us to try) some different things. We did pole dancing, we did rock climbing. We tapped dance,” says Steph. “It was fun to interact with other people that applied for the show.”

The couple particularly enjoyed visiting Montreal, where the final leg of Season 4 took place. As well as attending Cirque du Soleil, they also visited St-Viateur Bagel, the site of the bagel challenge that slowed down many of the teams.

“They were actually adorable they gave us mugs and cream cheese spreaders. They took a picture with us. They had an ‘Amazing Race Canada’ plaque in their place now,” says Kristen.

But Kristen did not take the opportunity to deliver any bagels.

“No, I’m retired,” she says with a laugh.

With their year of free travel winding down, Steph and Kristen still have a few trips left to take before they get back to full-time jobs.

They say being on the show has changed their whole perspective.

“That’s the best part about ‘The Amazing Race Canada.’ Running it was a real experience and I think it really opens your eyes to how cool Canada is, how many opportunities there are in the world and obviously by winning it and taking this year off I know our whole lives have changed,” says Steph.

Season 5 of "The Amazing Race Canada" premieres Tuesday, July 4 at 8/7C on CTV.
