Title: TAR Canada MEDIA
Post by: georgiapeach on October 16, 2014, 03:08:56 AM
TORONTO - Bell Media is teaming with "Survivor" creator Mark Burnett and MGM to develop new TV formats for worldwide audiences.

A TV format is the concept, branding and premise of a program. Examples of international formats adapted by Bell Media's CTV for local audiences include "The Amazing Race Canada," "Masterchef Canada" and "Canadian Idol."

The terms of the deal announced Wednesday were not released, but Bell Media says it already has several pilots for new formats in development and pre-production.

Bell Media is officially partnering with the United Artists Media Group -- a newly formed joint venture among Burnett, his production partner Roma Downey, MGM and Hearst Entertainment -- and Omnicom Canada's Highway Entertainment.

Phil King, president of CTV sports and entertainment programming, said in a news release that the broadcaster was "thrilled" to be partnering with Burnett and others.

"With enormous pedigree and an incredible track record for hit format creation, we look forward to not only developing content for our own market, but internationally as well," he said.

Season 1: Interac Debit
Season 2: Scotiabank American Express
Season 3: BMO Air Miles? hehe

I hate to say it, but Air Canada being a sponsor is a curse and a blessing. I bet they are contributing a sizeable amount on keeping the show afloat but them limiting the possible airline destinations kinda sucks. But I really don't mind going back to Canada and do a couple of legs then go to another international destination.

Racers aren’t the only ones who sign on for an adrenalin-filled 30 days.

Approximately 200-plus personnel are on hand for each leg of the Race, with 75-80 of those on board for the entire ride.

Production started April 22 and wrapped May 23 in a location that will be disclosed on the season finale Sept. 23.
(There was great excitement among the largely male crew when they discovered a wash-and-fold service in Whitehorse. Clean clothes, hurrah!)

In addition to the executive team and producers who leapfrog from location to location, there is the crew. The hard-working group includes a father-and-son team, and some returning veterans who worked on the first season of The Amazing Race Canada. Then there’s “Shifty,” a 52-year-old cameraman, acknowledged as being in the best shape of the bunch. Oh, and he has one eye, so he shoots blind on one side.

And consider this: when the gold-medal-winning duo of Meaghan Mikkelson and Natalie Spooner drop their packs and hoof it, their two-person crew has to keep up with the Olympians. The cameraman has to do it (all in focus, remember) with approximately 35 pounds balanced on his shoulder; the soundman with 40 pounds on his belt and in his backpack. (One cameraman, who has also worked on Survivor, says the Race is a way tougher gig.)

The sound-and-vision teams swap out tasks on a daily basis. One day they could be shooting “zone” (getting footage of teams competing once they arrive at challenges; this often involves shooting from a fixed location), the next shadowing a team throughout the day. (The two-person team rotates throughout the Race, pairing with different teams daily.)

And here’s another secret from behind the scenes: the racers’ microphone packs are placed in condoms to protect them from shorting out due to the salt in the racers’ sweat. They use the non-lubricated versions, of course.

The Amazing Race Canada flags are flying again in the Okanagan.

Unbeknownst to most, contestants and producers of Amazing Race Canada recently whisked their way in, and out of the South Okanagan.

The region is once again being used as the backdrop for one of the episodes of season three of Amazing Race Canada which airs on CTV beginning July 8.

In season one, Kelowna and West Kelowna served as backdrops for the opening leg of the show, which takes contestants across Canada and around the world. They are asked to perform tasks and compete in contests in hopes to arriving at the finish line ahead of their competitors.

The series is hosted by 2010 Olympic skeleton gold medalist Jon Montgomery.

The showcase in Summerland was the Waterfront Resort and Spa. Officials with the resort were unable to comment on their experience with the show citing a confidentiality agreement.

Christine Petkau executive director of the Summerland Chamber of Commerce said it was exciting, and a bit of surprise, to learn the show was filming in Summerland.

"The reality is it was a surprise. We hadn't known they were coming to town. We picked up that information from social media," said Petkau.

"When that kind of thing happens in a small community it's really exciting."

While Petkau is thrilled Summerland was chosen as one of the locations, she said it's just as important that other South Okanagan locations were used as well.

"My understanding is they did a variety of activities in the South Okanagan region. We work collectively as cooperative communities in the South Okanagan so the reality is when something exciting like this happens it benefits our whole region," said Petkau.

As for exposure Petkau agreed it's priceless. She said she wouldn't know where to begin to price out the cost of 60 minutes of prime time airtime.

Mayor Peter Waterman was also in the dark prior to the show's arrival but wondered what took them so long to discover his South Okanagan community.

"I've lived here most of my life and we've got incredible lakeshore vistas and canyon vistas," said Waterman. "An outfit like Amazing Race I'm sure could find just about everything to suit their purposes."

It's not known at this time when the South Okanagan episode will air.

Amazing Race Canada hits 5 locations in South Okanagan

Host Jon Montgomery and the cast of The Amazing Race Canada slipped into the South Okanagan earlier this week to film part of the show’s third season.

JOE FRIES | Posted 2 weeks ago

Five locations across the South Okanagan were visited earlier this week by cast and crew during filming of The Amazing Race Canada, the Herald has learned.

Sources confirmed the show stopped at the Summerland Waterfront Resort, D’Angelo Estate Winery in Naramata, Covert Farms near Oliver, the Osoyoos Desert Model Railroad and the nearby Nk’Mip Desert Cultural Centre.

The CTV program, now in its third season, sends two-person teams on a race around the country – and sometimes beyond – during which they complete a series of tasks. The last team to complete the tasks in each episode is usually eliminated, and the final duo standing at the end of the season is declared the winner.Last season’s champions walked away with $250,000 cash, two Chevrolet pickup trucks, gasoline for life from Petro Canada, and a year’s worth of free travel on Air Canada.

During the show’s stop in this region, one of the tasks is believed to have involved wakeboarding on Okanagan Lake near the Summerland Waterfront Resort.Dave Gottwald said it appeared the cast was filming B-roll when he caught a glimpse of the action on Sunday morning.“It was kind of interesting, because besides the actual competition that they do, I think they do editing shots for dramatic purposes, so what I saw them doing I don’t think was for the actual completion,” he said.“They had the competitor holding a GoPro (camera) on a selfie stick  and they were doing a lot of runs with that to get some footage,” said Gottwald, who created a stir after using his Valley Wide Exterior Enterprises account on Twitter to post a photo of the Amazing Race flag hanging from the Summerland hotel.

Upwards of 20 people from Naramata and 50 in total from the Okanagan were taken on as crew during the race’s visit here, according to Kurt Joudrey, who said he was hired by the show’s producers to look after transportation.“They loved the crew here. I got a lot of compliments on the pairings of the drivers. All the executives I spoke with were just thrilled,” said Joudrey, who was reluctant to divulge more details due to a confidentiality agreement he was required to sign to work on the show.Revealing locations or results of the competition “would obviously detract from the suspense of the show,” he explained.J

oudrey, who has experience in the film industry, allowed though that the race’s location managers “were quite pleased with everything we sorted out for them here.”The new season of The Amazing Race Canada premieres July 8.

CTV spokesman Jim Quan said he was unable to confirm the show did indeed visit the South Okanagan and therefore couldn’t comment on when the episode that was shot here will air.

Kelowna was featured in the first episode of the first season of the show, hosted by former Olympian Jon Montgomery, in 2013

“Once again, our amazing partners continue to deliver the best prizes offered by any competition series in Canada period,” said Phil King, President – CTV, Sports, and Entertainment Programming, Bell Media. “With more than a million dollars in winnings up for grabs, 'The Amazing Race Canada' stakes are real, and the payout, life changing.”

So they had a three year contract with Air Canada....which means next season is negotiable, and maybe we will finally see them circumnavigating?
Also...confirmation of 11 pit stops, not including the finish line = 12 legs. :cheer:

I think they showed them all on either CanadaAM and/or etalk,, one group per day? But they also had daily press releases which is what I looked for. I don't remember the timing of the releases...if they were put out simultaneous to the aired appearances, just before or just after.

Interestingly, as Sue pointed out to me, though the first 3 reveals on Monday were supposed to come on Etalk, that show is not on the lineup that day due to Women's World Cup Soccer.

Man, I hope that doesn't delay it to Tuesday :(

That was easily the worst TARCAN leg ever lol.

I remember seeing Edmondton press going like "THE CITY IS SO BEAUTIFUL AND WE'RE THANKFUL FOR THE VISIT" but they only went to a DUMP for the Detour, a GAS STATION for the Route Info, and a RANDOM BAR for the Roadblock.

I'm already cringing at how bad the Canada legs might be this season  :groan:

But no Petro-Canada means goodbye to the "gas for life" part of the prize.

And looks like this is the replacement for the year of travel in business class:

"Additionally, Hotels.com will provide hotel accommodations for a once-in-a-lifetime trip for two around the world. Each Leg Prize (which is awarded to the first place team for that leg of the race) is also provided by Hotels.com. The Leg Prize includes a five-night stay at a pre-determined exotic destination."

They may put out another press release sometime before the premiere, or there should be some more features on etalk - probably a Jon interview.

This was in our paper today.

http://thechronicleherald.ca/artslife/1375227-a-look-at-this-years-amazing-race-canada-contestants

A look at this year's 'Amazing Race Canada' contestants

"I can't believe we're gearing up for a fourth season," says "The Amazing Race Canada" host Jon Montgomery. "If you ever want to have your year fly by, do something that's intense for one month of the year."

One month is how long the former Olympic skeleton champion, as well as the 10 new two-person teams, spent racing around Canada and exotic locations around the world to shoot what's been the most-watched show in Canada over the past three summers.

"The Amazing Race Canada" returns Tuesday on CTV.

Montgomery says his life has definitely changed since he became the host of the series following his Vancouver Olympics triumph.

"I'd say people recognize me more now from hosting the show than for what happened in 2010," he says. It has led to an inspirational-speaking career for the 37-year-old Manitoba-native. He and his wife Darla —also a skeleton athlete — are expecting their first child later this summer.

Executive producer John Brunton praises Montgomery as someone who "defines what our DNA is of the show. You can throw Jon into any situation, he will do anything — jump off bridges, do all this stuff and have a fun time doing it."

Brunton and the other producers look for the same qualities in the people they cast to race in the series.

"Are they root-able?" is Brunton's No. 1 objective. "It's a hero show and you want to be able to root for the people."

His other mantra is "shy doesn't work well on a show like this." Shy would not describe any of the ten new couples who will line up at the starting line, with more women than men in on this year's race. They'll vie for nearly a half million dollars in cash and prizes, with $250,000 going to the winning team. Here's a look at the competitors:

— Kelly Xu and Kate Pan, both 25. The Toronto-based fitness entrepreneurs are the first Asian women's team to run on "The Amazing Race Canada." Both born in China, the peppy business partners call each other "sisters from another mother."

— Rita Yakibonge and Yvette Yakibonge, both 23. These twins come from a large family that hails from the Congo. Born in Montreal and raised in Edmonton, the boisterous Service Canada agents are looking to help their single mom as well as pay off their student loans.

— Jillian MacLaughlin, 30, and Emmett Blois, 28. These two highly competitive Nova Scotia natives met three years ago in the "Big Brother Canada" house. Jillian was the season 1 winner. They used to date each other, but now they're just committed to one thing: winning "The Amazing Race Canada."

— Julie Taylor, 33, and Lowell Taylor, 34. One's a psychologist, the other is a speech pathologist. What sets this likable couple from Lethbridge, Alta., apart is that Lowell is legally blind. His decreasing vision has not stopped him from training for the Rio 2016 Summer Paralympic Games.

— Frankie Gassler, 41, and Amy Gassler, 25. This mother/daughter duo from Aldergrove, B.C., are like the Gilmore Girls plus peroxide. Frankie was just 15 when she became pregnant with Amy. Both in the hair-care business, the two could pass as sisters with Amy really the more grounded of the two.

— Anne Morrone and Tanya Muzzatti, both 40. These peppy single moms from Woodbridge, Ont., have known each other since they were five. Lifelong friends, they've had each other's backs through divorces, deaths and financial hardships. Armed with lucky charms, they want to win for all the moms.

— Stephane Tetreault, 51, and Antoine Tetreault, 25. This father/son team from St. Hubert, Que., had their own personal speed bump to get past when Antoine came out to his family. Now dad is Antoine's greatest supporter. Super competitive, they admit they argue about everything.

— Anthony Limbombe, 21, and Brandon Campeau, 21. These two friends met while working together at a restaurant. Limbombe hails from Windsor, Ont., Campeau from nearby La Salle. Both are well travelled, love sports and music and hate to lose.

— Steph Leclair, 27, and Kristen Mckenzie, 25. These softball stars played for Team Canada. After a long-distance relationship, they've teamed up in Toronto. Both hope to win so they can buy some property together.

— Joel Ground, 42, and Ashley Callingbull, 26. This Cree father/daughter team hail from Enoch, Alta. An actress and activist, Ashley is the reigning Mrs. Universe and can be seen on "Blackstone." Stepdad Joel is an auto mechanic. Both are passionate about First Nation causes.

— Bill Brioux is a freelance TV columnist based in Brampton, Ont.

Starting my final week on #AmazingRaceCanada - excited to wrap up my episodes. Looking ahead to next week and starting #RHOToronto!

Mike is one of the producers/casting director (so the one responsible for many of the teams we've gotten these past 4 seasons). That will be a loss if a season 5 is greenlighted next year :(

Pretty neat infographic on social media's influence on TARCAN:

http://www.mediamiser.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/ARC-IG-20141.pdf

Sorry for being relatively new to RFF.  I am reading many old threads.  I saw this and read some more.  So the company MediaMiser has changed names but their new company Agility PR Solutions has posted cool little reads on each of the episodes from Season 4.  Do yourself a favour and go to https://www.google.ca/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=agility+PR+Solutions+Amazing+Race+Canada&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&gfe_rd=cr&ei=anl2WKG5BcGh8wfCkr_YCA (https://www.google.ca/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=agility+PR+Solutions+Amazing+Race+Canada&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&gfe_rd=cr&ei=anl2WKG5BcGh8wfCkr_YCA)  It provides sort of an interesting summary of each leg that I think the show creators must have access to to gauge impact.

Ready, Set, RACE PLAY! New THE AMAZING RACE CANADA In-Show Game Brings all the Action to Viewers

– RACE PLAY features in-show weekly polls and trivia, prompting viewers to engage in real-time on their mobile device and desktop during all original broadcasts across the country –

– All-new season brings fans to the starting line and inside some of the toughest challenges of the season with immersive VR360 experiences –

To tweet this release: bmpr.ca/2t1Op7I

TORONTO, June 28, 2017 /CNW/ - Hot on the heels of last week's @CTV_PR #MeetTheRacers team announcements on Instagram and Twitter, CTV unveiled two new innovative viewer experiences ahead of the epic fifth season of THE AMAZING RACE CANADA, airing Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT, beginning July 4 on CTV and CTV GO.

First, CTV revealed today a new game, RACE PLAY, that integrates race action from the broadcast into in-show polls and trivia, prompting viewers in real-time to answer on their second screens – mobile devices and desktop – during all original broadcasts across the country. Powered by CTV.ca, viewers can weigh in on pivotal moments throughout the episode, such as what Detour to take, and predict the order teams hit the mat. The results will appear on a leaderboard on their second screen so viewers can see how they stack up with the rest of the country. Fans who create an account will have their answers count towards a season-long leaderboard. RACE PLAY is powered by iPowow, worldwide leaders in participation television.

CTV also announced today new THE AMAZING RACE CANADA VR360 experiences that bring fans right to the starting line and inside some of the most grueling challenges throughout the race. The VR360 experience begins by featuring the season premiere episode, which CTV confirmed today will kick-off in St. John's N.L., and see Racers travel more than 5,000 kilometers across the country to Vancouver.

Using VR360 immersive video capture, audiences can share and explore THE AMAZING RACE CANADA environments, incredible places, and some of the most exciting moments of the season, including the starting line at Signal Hill National Historic Site in St. John's N.L. Narrated by host Jon Montgomery, VR360 was captured in five Canadian legs of the race in celebration of the 150th anniversary of Canadian confederation. The VR360 experience is available on CTV.ca and THE AMAZING RACE CANADA Facebook Page, as well as the SamsungVR app, the YouTube VR, and Facebook 360, and is accessible via mobile, desktop, and Oculus (VR headset). THE AMAZING RACE CANADA VR360 experience is produced by Tyger Shark Inc. with the financial participation of the Bell Fund.

"With RACE PLAY and THE AMAZING RACE CANADA VR360 experience, we're engaging RACE fans like never before, while also extending the brand across multiple platforms," said Mike Cosentino, Senior Vice-President, Content and Programming.

"It's been a lot of fun integrating RACE PLAY and the VR360 experience into the show," said Executive Producer John Brunton. "Whether it's inviting viewers right to the starting line or testing their knowledge of the Racers and the places we visit, we are thrilled to deliver a new and layered viewing experience to audiences for the new season of THE AMAZING RACE CANADA."

The site features videos, bios, fun facts, and exclusive content. For full episodes, sneak peeks, and extras, head to the site after the Season 5 premiere on July 4.

Season 4 of THE AMAZING RACE CANADA averaged 1.9 million viewers per week, making it the #1 series of the summer for four consecutive years and a Top 20 program in Canada in 2016.

Hosted by Olympic Gold Medalist Jon Montgomery (@jonmonty), Season 5 will see Racers travel across Canada and beyond, tackling non-stop challenges in the country's favourite summertime adventure. Canadians can also look forward to special challenges and storylines to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Canadian confederation throughout the season.

This season's grand prize is a Next Generation 2018 Chevrolet Equinox True North Edition for each of the winners, a once-in-a-lifetime trip around the world for two, $250,000 in cash, and the coveted title of THE AMAZING RACE CANADA champions. Racers will also be competing for special leg prizes, awarded to the first team to cross the mat in each of the episodes leading up to the finale.

Encore presentations of THE AMAZING RACE CANADA air Saturdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT and Sundays at 5 p.m. ET/PT on CTV and CTV GO. Visit CTV.ca to check local listings. Previous seasons are also available for streaming now on CraveTV.

Wow, this article spoils a lot of the first episode! http://o.canada.com/entertainment/television/the-amazing-race-canada-players-so-competitive-in-season-5-says-showrunner

The Amazing Race Canada players ‘so competitive’ in Season 5, says showrunner

Barrelling around the corner in a blur of backpacks and Spandex, the teams battling it out on The Amazing Race Canada scan Capilano Suspension Bridge Park for a falconer with a clue to their next destination. Each team’s camera crew runs far too fast for 9 o’clock in the morning, trying to keep up.

It’s the second day of a two-day leg that kicks off season 5 of the travel competition. Yesterday, they were in St. Johns, NL, taking on challenges involving the Coast Guard, the harbour docks and Cabot Tower.

But this is Vancouver. In a destination filled with trees an arm span wide, no less. The smell of cedar sweetens the air, while a nearby river chats up invisible birds. One by one, the teams scuttle to the falconer’s base and await her directions.

“Woah, this is Canada? This is amazing!” someone shouts, and a blond gallops up with high fives for everyone. But the falcon perched on her caretaker’s arm is not amused. Neither are the two owls in their habitat behind them, complaining about interrupted sleep.

Luckily, birds aren’t The Amazing Race’s target demographic. The homegrown competition continues to be ratings gold for CTV — last season averaged 1.9 million viewers per week, making it the No. 1 summer series each year it’s been on.

This season sticks with the winning formula. Ten teams of two race across Canada and abroad, tackling challenges — including ones celebrating confederation — for the grand prize: a pair of Next Generation 2018 Chevrolet Equinox cars, a trip around the world for two and $250,000 in cash.
It’s enough to make the most jovial contestant play with a little more hustle and muscle.

“Season 1 was ‘Oh my god, I can’t believe we’re doing this!” says showrunner Mark Lysakowski. “And then seasons after that, you know what to expect. But the cast is so competitive this year, fighting for every little thing in every leg. It’s like watching a really cool live sporting event.”

“In season 1, I don’t think anybody got U-turned,” adds host Jon Montgomery, referring to one team’s option to force another to do a challenge they didn’t originally choose. “That was pretty pure Canadiana, but it’s also probably not the best strategy for winning. This season, nobody’s pulling any punches and they’re playing to win.”

Among the contestants: Aaron and Deborah Baker, a mother and son who work as funeral directors (and are wearing matching suits to boot); Sam Lambert and Paul Mitskopoulos, boyfriends from Toronto; Zed and Shabbir Dhalla, a cancer-survivor dad and his son; and Kenneth McAlpine and Ryan LaChapelle, surfer-dude best friends (“They’re the ultimate Canadian hosers,” says Lysakowski).

Hollering and fist-pumping the air, the teams wobble across the Capilano Suspension Bridge — 70 metres above the river and 137 metres long — and set off in search of the Gassy Jack statue for their next clue.

Vancouver itself is a blend of modern and rustic, with glittering condos and stores like Holt Renfrew, Harry Rosen and Sephora tucked behind cherry blossom trees. Ever-present in the background are rows of mountains dressed formally in evergreens and capped in snow. The Pacific Ocean sprinkles salt in the air.
From Gassy Jack, in the historic section downtown, the racers will make their way to one of the show’s most dramatic challenges yet: a tightrope walk between two roofs at The Fairmont Hotel. Actually, the term “tightrope” might be generous. It’s more of a thumbwidth strap that flits in the wind, as if the task of keeping a human from falling 14 stories into traffic were as easy as brunch.

Two by two, the competitors tiptoe across the strap, wearing a harness that acts like a designated driver to the wiggling strap’s party girl. Crew on both roofs pull and strain to adjust the rigging as the teams go along.

“Woooo! Oh my God, that was so awesome. Oh my Goooooooddd! This is awesome! This is awesome!” yells fitness consultant Ebonie Roberge, as she dismounts. Shortly after, events coordinator LaChappelle tumbles midway through his second attempt, dangling helplessly as the harness hauls him up.

“There are always snap judgments (you make about the racers), that you’re pleasantly surprised by or let down by,” says Montgomery.

“People don’t maybe challenge themselves as hard as you think they should on a particular challenge. But when someone does have a moment like that, I promise you, on this show, they always redeem themselves … They can’t pussyfoot their way through the race and expect to come out as champions.”

Across the street, pedestrians take pictures of the competitors navigating the strap above. Incoming teams mingle with them, cheering on their peers. And in a production vehicle nearby, Tom Petty’s 1989 Free Fallin’ plays on a CD — the driver’s seemingly oblivious to the irony.
“In the first season, we were very concerned about the public leaking information while we were racing. Like, ‘Oh, my god it’s all over social media. Since then, I have not really cared because it creates excitement,” says Lysakowski.

The hardest thing, he says, is keeping the show fresh.

With the U.S. version of The Amazing Race wrapping its 29th season last month, and the Canadian version debuting its fifth season soon after, race overload is a real threat.

This year, CTV introduces two new features for viewers looking for a little more oomph.

Race Play will integrate each episode’s action into in-show polls and trivia, which happen in real time, and VR360 experiences will use immersive video capture to bring fans inside some of the most gruelling challenges.

“I still think there are more seasons in the show. I still think there are more places we can go. And we’re going to go back to certain places — there are more shows in Toronto, there are more shows in Vancouver, in Calgary,” says Lysakowski.

“The thing about Canada is that there are so many cool things that are going on, and I’m always on the lookout for new things to do and new places to go, and new things to see. And that to me is the best part of this show — discovering Canada.”

Things I picked up from article:

1) First task involves the: Coast Guard, the harbour docks and Cabot Tower.
2) The article confirms the order of the locations in Vancouver.
3) Must find a falconer with at the bridge.
4) Jon makes a mistake in saying that no teams uturned each other in S1, we all know how Bodybreak reacted in Regina  :funny:
5) Ebonie/Ryan do the Slack line RB, with Ebonie finishing before Ryan.

I don't think that film permit was a decoy. There was a huge crowd at City Hall that day - if I remember correctly, it was a protest against Rob Ford???  Any way it was on the books at City Hal and I think they did a last minute repacement with the L-Tower to avoid the throngs of onlookers.

They did a live Q&A chat last week with Jon. Several comments were along the lines of "why go anywhere else? Big beautiful amazing diverse country, it's the title, yada..."

BEIJING — One cannot, to debunk a popular myth, see the Great Wall of China from space.

"We looked for it," says retired International Space Station commander Chris Hadfield. "It's the same colours as its surroundings.

"It's almost beautifully camouflaged."

The Great Wall can, however, be seen on Tuesday's episode of "The Amazing Race Canada" on CTV.

"It was always on our radar," says Insight Productions chief and executive producer John Brunton. Finally, in season 5, the dream to visit this "wonder of the world" has become a reality.

Not that there weren't challenges, says Brunton, who always travels with the teams competing from across Canada as well as a small army of camera operators, sound engineers and other crew members.

"We started thinking about how we could logistically go to different places," says Brunton while being interviewed at the ancient and picturesque Juyongguan section of the Great Wall, about 60 kilometres from downtown Beijing.

"Then, having made this plan months ago, things started to heat up on the South China Seas."

The actual race was filmed last May, just as U.S. President Donald Trump was threatening a military response to North Korean long-range ballistic missile tests. The distance from Beijing to the North Korean capital of Pyongyang is just over 800 kilometres — roughly the equivalent of Toronto to Quebec City.

Brunton says Chinese officials started getting concerned about people entering the country, "particularly with a couple of tons of equipment and a whole bunch of boxes that have to be accounted for."

Everything brought in had to be taken out, Brunton adds. The producer had to post a $300,000 bond to assure Chinese officials nothing would be left behind.

Political unrest is a constant roadblock on overseas legs of "The Amazing Race Canada." Plans to visit Kenya this season were scrapped after risks on the way to safari locations were assessed.

"It's a little bit trickier in some countries than it used to be," says Brunton, "and that's a constantly shifting situation."

Teams competing this year were thrilled to make it to the historic wall, even if they only caught a fleeting glimpse.

"From what we could see it was obviously gorgeous," says Ryan Lachapelle, who teamed with Collingwood, Ont., pal Kenneth McAlpine as the always positive pair known as "Team Give'r."

As viewers will see Tuesday, teams were given a tour guide task to perform at the wall, challenging them to speak a few languages. Then it was quickly on to the next challenge.

"This is a race," says McAlpine. "You have to embrace where you are, but if you stop and stare at the sights too long, teams will pass you by and you could be at the tail end of the pack."

The other challenge for teams running through Beijing: pollution. Montreal siblings Andrea and Adam Cavaleri were shocked at the air quality.

"It's the first thing we noticed," says Andrea. The fact the series took them directly from the pristine mountains and fresh air of B.C., she adds, only made the contrast worse.

Another complication during the Beijing leg of the race: sandstorms.

"They said the air quality was five times worse than normal when we were there," says Toronto's Sam Lambert, running with partner Paul Mitskopoulos. "You'd walk outside the hotel and breathe in the air and think: this is far from refreshing."

Edmonton husband and wife Karen and Bert Richards also choked on the air but praised the streets of downtown Beijing as virtually litter-free.

"The sky is so polluted but the ground is so pristine," says Bert.

Racers visited other venues in Beijing including a stop at the National Olympic Sports Centre, a Chinese herbal medicine shop, and the local Canadian Embassy, one of Canada's largest in the world. There they witnessed — what else? — a ball hockey game.

By the time season 5 is over, the finalists will have raced over 50,000 kilometres from start to finish.

"The Amazing Race Canada" returned for a fifth season earlier this month and the debut was by far the most-watched show of the summer. The first episode drew 1,888,000 viewers, according to ratings gatherer Numeris.

They're really pushing the former racers in the bonus clips this year. Steph & Kristen's "Backseat Driver" recap series with past teams from all seasons, the coincidental(?) meeting with Hal en route to Regina.

For those who can't see them, by the way, these were the teams featured (copied from Steph & Kristen's Wikia page). The rest were them alone.
-Episode 2: Brent & Sean (Season 3)
-Episode 3: Frankie & Amy (Season 4)
-Episode 5: Rex & Bob (Season 2)
-Episode 6: Hamilton & Michaelia (Season 3)
-Episode 8: Hal & Joanne (Season 1)
-Episode 10: Holly & Brett (Season 1)

If they have one more season in them, I'm sensing hints from this that we're quite possibly getting an All-Stars next to end it off. After 5 seasons, there's enough memorable teams to fill a cast IMO. Vietnam's 5th one was.

There is NO evidence that TARC is ending. Just like the US version renewals are given out by the Network in 1's or 2's.

We are confirmed thru 6. Just because there is not an ANNOUNCED renewal YET certainly doesn't mean there will not be one.

TARC often leads its time slot...I would be hugely shocked if this does not go on.

Quit with the doomsday faces. :funny:

And fwiw I don't think they'll do a returning season YET either. IMO.

I don't think they would do a returnee/all-stars season this early either, but I know the success of BBCan's last two seasons may convince them otherwise. I just hope they go all out when they do decide on one. I've already got several teams I would like to see go head-to-head. LOL

last two paragraphs are an interesting read:

https://saultonline.com/2017/10/famtastic-year-for-travel-media-in-sault-ste-marie/

Quote
Visiting travel media typically cover attractions like the Agawa Canyon Tour Train, fishing in the St. Mary’s River and area lakes, local restaurants and museums, and hiking and driving along the shore of Lake Superior. “It’s our job to convince travel media to come here; once they arrive, they’re always amazed with the beauty of the region,” said Lindsey Ackland, Coordinator of Visitor & Media Relations. “We look forward to generating more FAM tours and welcoming new travel writers in the weeks and months to come.”

These promotional opportunities are created by attending media marketplace events and pitching the community. As one example, staff met producers of The Amazing Race Canada at a 2016 forum. After some detailed discussions, the show decided to film an episode in Sault Ste. Marie. Aired last month, the segment generated more than 1.5 million viewers and over $1.18 million of ad coverage for the city in the Ontario market alone.

Any idea of the event names? I remember seeing something last year - could even have been the one mentioned, but I can't remember.

"Hosted by Olympic Gold Medallist Jon Montgomery, the multiple Canadian Screen Award winner THE AMAZING RACE CANADA welcomes a new cast of racers to the Season 6  starting line, premiering Tuesday, July 3 at 8 p.m. ET / 9 p.m. MT on CTV and CTV GO, and delivers a new twist with first-ever THE AMAZING RACE CANADA: HEROES EDITION. Featuring teachers, first responders, parents, community leaders, mentors, athletes, and other everyday heroes with a story to tell, the most-watched Canadian program of the 2016-17 broadcast year follows 10 intrepid teams as they push themselves out of their comfort zones in a non-stop, action-packed adventure with the hopes of being the last team standing, in the biggest race this country has ever seen."

I wonder which team is the parent teams... maybe team #3 is a single-mom team? (or just moms lol they don't need to be single) Because all of the other potential couples (5/6/7/8) look quite young.

It does not say that the TEAM is parent-child...just that the racers include parents, right? ???

Yes, that's what I understood, like both are parents as a couple, someone's parent (like maybe team 5/6/7) or as both racers are parents but not together (Could be team 1/3/4). I guess we will see!

and Peach, when can we expect the rest of the info for the Mexico Leg and the Finale? I can't wait to see what your team got!!! :conf:

They could double up. Teams could be teachers and parents right?

On the bottom of the team pages, the new sponsors this year are

Alcon Dailies - A contact lens maker. How would that fit into a product placement task?
Dempster's Bakery

And Woods is back from last year.

OMG I know some of those places - Squamish, Sea to Sky Gondola, Britannia Mines and more

1) The ferry dock is at Darrell Bay, just South of the Sea to Sky Gondola
2) the Gondola, just south of Squamish
3) Britannia Mines

The aerial shot is between Britannia and Sea to Sky Gondola.
The snowy trail shots the top of the Gondola.
The logger sports are at the Squamish Al McIntosh Loggers Sports Grounds.

The FB one's the same as on Twitter; as for the RB promo, it had no BGM.

Shout-out to the Hockey Queen herself Meaghan Mikkelson-Reid for deigning to proctor these upcoming peasants!

Looks like Indonesia is only going to be one leg.

Quote
Producers had to arrange visas and fly the eight remaining teams, camera and sound crews, director Rob Brunner and host Jon Montgomery approximately 30,000 kilometres there and back for the single episode, which will air Tuesday.

So they flew 30,000 kilometres just for one leg and then back to Canada?  :groan: I hope there was another leg somewhere in Asia

Episode 8's title is showing up as "The Zombies Are Honing In On Us", BUT this almost sounds like something more suited to the following destination (TARC has mixed up titles in the listings a few times in the past. I'd wait until mid-week, they correct it by then.)
