Zach Oleynik
An ambitious pre-med student and Quarterback for the University of Regina’s football team.

Age: 22
Hometown: Regina, SK
Occupation: University Student
Describe yourself in three words: Fun. Energetic. Competitive.

Do you have a strategy to win Big Brother Canada?
I’m going to try to align myself with a close group of four people. Once I’ve built my social game, I’m going to start letting my physicality come into play. I know it’s going to be hard to hold back from winning competitions. I’ve never not done my very best when competing. I want to find good, loyal people, and I’m not opposed to finding a showmance, or even a bromance, if I think it’ll help me. My biggest challenge will be getting the target off of my back because I know that at 6’4, it’ll be on me from day one.

If you could take one thing inside the house, what would it be and why?
I wish I could bring music into the house with me. I love music and it won’t be easy to not have a chance to listen to it every day. I’d also love to bring in my football hats, or something that represents my team back home. Go Rams!

Brain vs. Brawn. Which challenges, physical or mental, do you fear most?
I honestly might have trouble with the endurance challenges because I’ve seen some of the taller guys on the show struggle with those ones in the past. It might just be awkward and tough for me to stay in one position for a long period of time.

If you won, how would you spend the $100k?
I’d spend it on my family. My mom and dad have sacrificed so much for my sister and me. They paid for me to go to school and get a good education. My mom’s even worked two jobs to make ends meet. Her and my dad never took a vacation or did anything for themselves. I’d also love to make a down payment on a house.

Who is your Big Brother Canada idol and why?
Jon Pardy (BBCAN2). He’s a funny, outgoing and athletic guy. Definitely someone I can relate to. He made it so hard for people to get rid of him. I also have a crush on Jillian (BBCAN1).

True North strong and free. What is your favourite thing about Canada?
The people are amazing. They’re so friendly and easygoing, and not egotistical. Canadians are open-minded and relatable.

‘Big Brother Canada 3′ pre-game exclusive: Will Zach Oleynik have the perfect gameplan?

While we’ve done interviews for every season of “Big Brother Canada,” this is the first time that we’ve done anything pre-game. Part of the fun of that is getting a feel and a sense of the houseguests before the commercials and all of the edited packages start to air. For a reference, these pre-game chats were done via phone, prior to any of the cast reveals on “ET Canada.”

So when we talked with Zach Oleynik, we didn’t know that he had made some troll-like comments towards Peter Brown online, or that he had that sort of cocky internet persona in general. Knowing that now as we write up the transcript from our chat adds an extra dosage of fun to the proceedings. For reference if you haven’t seen the other exclusive interviews we’ve done (you can check them out over here, or by clicking on the image below), we asked everyone roughly the same questions for the sake of fairness. Zach definitely left an impression, but we’ll talk about that further at the end of the article.

CarterMatt – Tell us about yourself: Your name, where you’re from, your age, and what you do for a living.
Zach – I’m Zach Oleynik, I’m 22 years old from Regina, Saskatchewan. I’m a university student, and a football player at the University of Regina. (Note: Specifically, he is the quarterback.)

What made you want to try out for Big Brother Canada this year?
You know what? I’m a huge ‘Big Brother’ fan. I’ve always watched the U.S. and the Canadian seasons, and I’ve always known it was something that I wanted to do. It just so happened that the open casting showed up in Regina, which was surprising and rare, so I figured I would wing it.

If you could compare yourself to someone from either BB Canada or BB USA, who would it be?
I think it’s easy to compare myself to someone like Jon [Pardy], just because he was this kind of big, social guy, but he also had this hard, competitive side to him. He’s just a natural winner. That’s kind of how I am. I’m a guy who’s outgoing and funny and loves to talk to people, but at the same time I’m a very competitive guy and I like to win. I really like to win.

What’s something about you that would surprise people?
I think the fact that I’m more than just a football player. I take my studies [seriously]; I’m a chemistry student at the university. I’m kind of a dynamic guy in that sense. I’m not your classic jock where I’m a little bit of a dummy. That will surprise people, that I know ‘Big Brother’ and know how to scheme and have a mental side of me that may be a little underrated.

What’s your basic strategy going into the house?
I know being competitive, it’s something that I have to [hide] at the start. I have to slow-play at the start, and with the social game, I have to get to know the people and understand that it’s a long game. I have to keep my ability and my competitive [nature] down at the start, and get to know a couple of people who are loyal and I can connect with. Then, I start winning competitions when I need to.

Is there any one thing you are the most excited to do this season?
Other than walking into the house the first night, I really just want to meet the cast. All of this process has been going, and I have no idea what I’m walking into, what kind of houseguests [will be] in there. That is a big surprise for me.

What do you think your biggest weakness could be?
I think being so competitive is a double-edged sword for me. It will help me, but I’m going to have a hard time throwing competitions. I’m a gameplayer naturally, so that’s something that could work for me, or throw a target bigger on my back.

What are hoping to get out of the show: Money, fame, love, or just a good time?
I think that I just love ‘Big Brother’ so much that when I watch the game I picture myself on it. It’s just winning ‘Big Brother,’ and being someone who fans watched, liked, and appreciated the game. I really just want to play the game. I know the money could really help me and my family out, but most importantly I’m kind of here for the experience.

If there is one message you would pass along to the Canadian public before entering the game, what would it be?
I think I would just tell Canada to watch out! I think I’m going to take this game by storm. I have the tools to take this game by storm, and it’s just a matter of me putting the pieces together.

Our overall impression - Just based on our interview alone, we thought Zach really came off as a guy who really said all of the right things, almost like this was a job interview. He has a lot of traits that are great for this game, but there was something about him here that suggested that this is not how he plays the game in the house. With that being said, it was nice to have a more athletic guy seemingly understand that he shouldn’t try to win every competition.
