CBS ANNOUNCES RENEWALS FOR 18 PRIMETIME SHOWS FOR NEXT SEASON

Combined With Two Previously Announced Renewals, Network Has Now Picked Up 20 Returning Series for 2014-2015

Returning Series Will Include the #1 Drama, #1 Comedy, #1 New Comedy and #1 News Program

CBS, America's most-watched network, today announced pick-ups for 18 series for next season. Combined with its previously announced pick-ups, CBS has now renewed 20 returning series for the 2014-2015 season, encompassing 17 hours of primetime programming.

"The best way to launch new shows in the fall and throughout the season is to surround them with a strong and stable lineup of successful series," said Nina Tassler, Chairman of CBS Entertainment. "The shows we're picking up today cut across every night of the week and feature genre leaders, time-period winners and the most-watched shows on broadcast television."

The 18 series renewed today comprise 15.5 hours of CBS's weekly primetime schedule and include nine dramas, five comedies, two reality series and two news programs.

The nine dramas picked up are: NCIS, television's #1 drama/scripted program for the fifth consecutive year; NCIS: LOS ANGELES, the #2 drama for the fourth straight year; time-period winners PERSON OF INTEREST, CSI: CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION, HAWAII FIVE-0 and BLUE BLOODS; as well as CRIMINAL MINDS, ELEMENTARY and the acclaimed drama THE GOOD WIFE.

The renewed comedies are 2 BROKE GIRLS, THE MILLERS, which is the #1 freshman comedy of the 2013-2014 season, MIKE & MOLLY, MOM and the long-running hit TWO AND A HALF MEN.

In alternative programming, the Network announced pick-ups for its Emmy Award-winning reality series THE AMAZING RACE and UNDERCOVER BOSS.

Finally, in news, CBS will return 60 MINUTES, television's #1 news program for more than four decades, and 48 HOURS, Saturday's #1 non-sports program.

In addition to these 18 series, CBS yesterday announced a three-year broadcast deal for THE BIG BANG THEORY. Previously, the Network announced two more editions of the reality series SURVIVOR for next season.

Season-to-date, CBS is television's #1 network in viewers for the 11th time in 12 years, averaging 10.84 million viewers.

Well, with these ratings..this is a nice surprise.

But, do they think they can do something to get the show to where it was? Maybe they will indeed try some changes next season..

I don't know how to convey the fact that has been frequently mentioned more and more the last few years that due to the ever increasing proportion of viewers who time shift their viewing or use other platforms for TAR (Hulu, CBS.com, I-Tunes, Amazon Instant Video, recording on DVR for delayed playback), the numbers for overnight preliminary viewers and the weekly viewers within 24 hours are lower, but the ultimate number of viewers within the plus three, plus seven or plus 30 days on all platforms are not going down, and haven't been. (Unless CBS releases a press release on those, we don't hear about them.)
The fact that TVGN now airs this season several times starting the following weekend for a week is in addition to the rest of this, and is in large part because CBS now half-owns and manages TVGN, just as it oversees and selects the management of the CW network.
If the show was deemed in any sort of danger, based on my own personal experience in the spring-summer-fall of 2003 (when TAR 4 aired), the word would get out and something, or several somethings would be planned. Nor does this take into account the cash flow to CBS from international syndication on a real time, or near real time basis in many countries, and the eventual DVD sales from Amazon.
That's why I put the (So Quit Worrying!) in the title of the thread. :)

I really hope the route is better than this season's. Seriously, nothing can stoop lower than revisiting China in the first Leg FOR THE THIRD TIME and featuring at least 3+ double Legs in one country. How bad can one route get? (Please don't jinx this)

Wooohoooo! I hope we got a great TAR 25 with exciting route, less double leg in a country, and great teams for sure  :colors

A better spread of teams ie 3FF 3MM & 5MF team would be nice ~ of course their personality and charisma makes them exciting to watch along with their competitiveness, and a decent route is all it needs :)

Just because TAR has been renewed doesn't mean they can keep running on cruise control.
They need to step it up, put in more effort and be proactive or the show's audience will continue to disappear.

It's the 25th Season! It's a huge milestone, and the only other shows I can think off that's hit 25 is Survivor and The Simpsons, which has been going since 1989. (I know they only have 1 season a year and what not, but still  )

Anyway CBS SHOULD make it their business to ensure that this season is one of, if not the best they can produce with whatever budget they're given!

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE CBS, hear the fans pleas, and do something!

Just because TAR has been renewed doesn't mean they can keep running on cruise control.
They need to step it up, put in more effort and be proactive or the show's audience will continue to disappear.

From all available information, the audience isn't disappearing, it is watching at different times and in different ways than the out-of-date overnight/weekly audience ratings measures can pick up.

If TAR were airing on a night where the live plus three or even plus six could be included you'd be seeing that reflected in the weekly numbers. But we're on Sunday night, and the ratings week closes a few hours after TAR airs so those numbers do not show any of that.

Am I making any sense yet?

The weekly ratings that are released on Tuesdays do not include DVR numbers. The DVR numbers come out a week or two after because, like you just said, they are measuring the +3 or +7.  So it doesn't matter whether or not TAR is on Sunday because they still measure DVR viewing 3 or 7 days later from the original airdate.

And even with the DVR numbers factored in, TAR (this season and last) is still down in both the all-important demo and total viewers from the season and the year before.

Pointing out TAR's dwindling ratings or Emmy losing isn't just for the sake of being negative or pessimistic, it's to point out that TAR needs to do better.  It's a sentiment shared by many TAR fans and even past Racers.  What TAR fan doesn't want the show to do well?  The ratings are an example that it is not.

To counter, CBS itself is internally using plus 30 days data, as well as alternative platforms. Moonves has clearly said as much in speeches over the past two years, and he's also pushed for advertisers to move to that measurement.

People are engaging in binge viewing of shows, and TAR actually lends well to that sort of viewing, although trying to do an entire season in a day is a challenge. But a month's worth at a time is quite doable.

I completely agree with you on this. TAR does need to make itself more fresh. The real trick is to make it more like what it was in the past - focused on ordinary people (instead of all the semi-celebrities), with an interesting route and creative tasks.

Sometimes it just seems like the producers don't even care, and are simply running on cruise control. For example, they didn't even remember that Joey & Meghan's last season was Season 22 (they put Season 18 in the caption on Episode 3). Also, I wasn't at all thrilled to see that this season they had the audacity to take the intro sequence out of every episode that is not the first! I want to see the montage of the teams! :groan:
