How could that become a reality and how could  Phil Keoghan, who is THE BEST host for The Amazing Race of ALL TIME, get to host it?

Well it's about time!  Especially since TAR is regularly one of the most watched shows, right? If not most watched some weeks.

Cool! The more TAR the merrier! There won't be a single week without a TAR airing somewhere in the world pretty soon hehe.

I'm assuming it'll run in the Summer so as not to clash with TARUS.  That's perfect since TARAu is taking a break apparently?

This Facebook message from November 4th looks more important now than it did at the time.

November 4th 2012 via BlackBerry Smartphones App
Just landed in Toronto with Phil from the amazing race!!! We are like best friends now....and by best friends, I mean I creepily took a blurry picture of him as I went down the escalator! Oh he's my favorite!!!

Back then I was thinking Phil was just pursuing some personal business or supporting one of his causes before TAR 22 started, but now it looks like he was possibly filming the announcement. However, this is just circumstantial evidence and doesn't prove anything. Maybe CTV is going to do a National Bingo Hour or Bowling For Dollars seven days a week or something like that. Or even Survivor Nunavik.

Hopefully the announcement is for The Amazing Race Canada!  Even though I am excited at the thought of having a Canadian version, I am a bit worried.  Canadian reality tv competition shows do not tend to last very long and I fear that if TAR: Canada is given the green light, it could only last a few seasons at most before being cancelled (see Canadian Idol, SYTYCD: Canada, Canada's Got Talent).

'The Amazing Race Canada' to debut next year
Phil Keoghan CBS

PopGoesTheNews.com CTV is set to announce it is producing a Canadian edition of popular reality series The Amazing Race.

Phil Keoghan, host of the CBS series (which airs on CTV), taped an announcement that will air during the Dec. 2 episode.

The Amazing Race, in which teams travel to countries around the world and compete in various challenges, debuted on CBS in 2001. Now in its 21st season, the show has consistently been a ratings winner for CTV, with about 2 million viewers. South of the border, the series draws about 10 million viewers.

The Amazing Race has franchised internationally, with versions airing in Australia, China, France, Israel, Latin America, Norway, Philippines and Ukraine.

“There are bigger fans of The Amazing Race in Canada than any other country,” Keoghan said in a 2008 interview. “They love the show with a passion that is truly extraordinary.”

Canadians have not been allowed to audition for the U.S. version of the show because, in part, producers worried Canadian passport holders would be able to clear customs quicker than Americans – giving them an unfair advantage.

Canada was showcased in two seasons of The Amazing Race as teams visited Calgary and Banff in Season 5 and then Montreal, Toronto and Niagara Falls in Season 8.

Casting information for The Amazing Race Canada has not been announced, and it is not known who will host the show. It will likely debut next summer.

The Amazing Race Canada to debut in 2013, reports claim

Get training, Canada: According to a report on Popgoesthenews.com, CTV is set to announce that The Amazing Race is headed north of the border.

The website reports that the series will be announced after a Dec. 2 airing of the U.S. show, via a taped message from show host Phil Keoghan. Canadians have been thusfar ineligible to compete on the series because, among other things, show producers were concerned that Canadian passport holders would be able to clear customs checks faster than their U.S. counterparts.

It’s not the first foray into Canada for Keoghan and the show: segments for the series fifth and eighth season were filmed in Canadian locations, and in 2007, Keoghan brought No Opportunity Wasted, based on his book of the same name, to the CBC.

An air date for The Amazing Race Canada has not been announced, nor has a host. The CBS series, now in its 21st season, currently airs on CTV in Canada

The American version is consistently rated in the top 10 every week in Canada. Considering viewership was higher for the Australian version compared to the American version on Australia, a similar bump might make the series last longer.

Many of international franchises have adopted locally include Canada's Next Top Model and it does count? It could be considerate on gave viewers?

Even if it is just for one season, what a great thing!! Ever since the first episode of TAR I have wanted a Canadian version that we could have a chance to participate.
Unfortunately a bit late for me, BUT I have soooo many friends that are going to apply.

I really hope it is an international race course and that they don't cheap out on the locales. I expect the prize to be only $500 000, which is non taxable here so would be close to the $1mil offered pre-tax in the US.

I know that people who no longer watch the show will be drawn back into it for the Canadian version and so many of them will apply.

Literaly 5 seconds long

Phil says get ready its coming to Canada and said visit a website !!

http://www.ctv.ca/theamazingracecanada.aspx

OMG! THe race is going to be within Canada only WTF!!!!

THE AMAZING RACE CANADA will provide a uniquely Canadian take on the original series, with competitors discovering the world within the borders of Canada. Though the series' specific destinations won't be revealed until it airs, Canada offers divergent topography and disparate locales that are bound to add to the excitement and complexity of the show and its challenges, from Vancouver Island's tropical rainforest, Alberta's parched Badlands, the peaks of the Rockies, and the barren tundra of the Great White North, to the Boreal forests of Ontario and Quebec, the sea-faring ports of the Maritimes, the fjords of Newfoundland, and the teeming metropolises and undiscovered towns in between.
Less the Amazing Race Canada and more like Canada Rush

I understand their point of having it solely in Canada. CTV already has a version that shows off the world, why not have a version that shows off Canada? I'd personally love to have a real season take place solely in the US.

I'm thinking more of a West Coast/East Coast start, like Vancouver or Halifax
Toronto would make sense but it's kinda in the middle so logistically it would not be efficiant.
At first I was really dissapointed, but you know this is better than nothing.. I really believe they could have gone to the Us, or like Cuba/DR/HAITI i don't know...

I think they should have a host who represents travel in and out of Canada- maybe a host of an adventure travel program.  For example : I don't know if anyone here watches Which Way To..... (I love this show) The hosts are 3 brothers (the Eagar brothers) and any one of them would make an awesome host!!! (Just my 2 cents)  :)

Outrage at Not So Amazing Race Canada?
So we finally get an Amazing Race Canada, but it looks like its going to be lame version of the American race - with teams not leaving Canada.
Why would CTV do this? Take a well established successful show formula and turn it into a documentary style travelogue?

Its all about the money…
…and the huge success that TAR US has been in Canada.
Every fall and spring television season, CTV sends a  bucketful of money to Disney-ABC Domestic Television in return for the rights to broadcast TAR US.
I don't know how much money it is, but this has been a relationship that has been profitable for the last 10 years, with TAR US being one of the most popular shows in Canada.
Because TAR US is so successful in Canada, CTV can charge advertisers a lot of money to include their commercials during the broadcast.
Disney-ABC is very hesitant to jeopardize this profitable relationship - so they include a non-compete clause with the distribution rights. CTV is not allowed to air a competitive show that might draw viewers and advertising revenue from TAR US.
Now it seems that Disney-ABC has relented somewhat in return for the franchise fees that TAR Canada will pay. But they still are not allowing TAR Canada to be in any way competitive with TAR US.
You need only read between the lines of the CTV announcement:
Quote
"the network has ordered THE AMAZING RACE CANADA, a Canadian-produced, complementary version of the hit international series".
Complimentary is the key word here - not competitive.
And:
Quote
"CTV has licensed the Canadian format rights from Disney-ABC Domestic Television and has selected Insight Productions to produce the series in Canada, with the support of Profiles Television."
Note that it says Canadian format rights - not series format rights. Its a different format that has been licensed in Canada, not the original format.

Is CTV being "cheap" by running a Canada only race?
Due to non-competition, CTV is forced to broadcast TAR Canada in the summer television season, when there are fewer viewers and hence fewer advertising dollars available to CTV. This means the revenue that TAR Canada produces for CTV will be much smaller than what TAR US produces for them. Which means a much smaller budget for the show. And there is no way the show can be produced at a loss - BellMedia would never allow it.
Depending on how the ratings go for season one, I wouldn't be surprised if the next edition of the show has a larger budget. But I still don't think we'll see a full TAR for Canada.

The Big Brother US effect
A wildcard in this is that Big Brother US will be broadcast during the same summer time period on GlobalTV. How much time are Canadians willing to commit to reality TV during the summer?
Will TAR Canada be allowed to compete for viewers vs Big Brother US? Its a CBS show that is broadcast on Global TV in the summer.
Interesting to note that Big Brother Canada is being produced by Insight Productions as well, so in theory they could have two shows being broadcast at the same time and competing against each other.

How did the Australians manage to get a "full" international race?
TAR AUS is broadcast in the Australian winter - the prime viewing time for television. Predicted advertising revenues for TAR AUS were great enough to budget for a full scale race. And there is no way an Australian version would compete with the US version so they weren't saddled with the same restrictions.

Will we ever see a full international version of TAR Canada?
I don't think Canada will see a full international version until TAR US "jumps the shark". (Like a celebrity version) Once there is a cancellation of at least one season of TAR US, TAR Canada can be broadcast during a high ratings period in Canada, which should allow a larger budget and a "real" race.

Countries which stayed within their borders all have population more then double Canada's so this is going to be not as exciting. ONly thing I can see interesting is people that don't speak french going into rural Quebec
But the population doesn't make a difference. Having the area it does is what will make this show interesting. If the Philippines and Vietnam can do diverse legs and show off several different sights, I'm sure a country that covers as much land as Canada can.

"We're not married to this forever, at all. Let's see how this plays out. We definitely can see having Canadians go around the world or go to a different country or something," he says.
"But for Year 1 we really wanted to focus on 'Amazing Race Canada' -- not just featuring Canadians but featuring Canada."

So it's another The Amazing Race Asia, but Canadian. But for both, there's still A CHANCE they will fly out of Canada like United States, Iceland, Greenland, maybe even further out. :cmas16
Don't forget France (Saint Pierre and Miquelon).

Summer is a good time - not a lot of good TV, so it will be a welcome addition to a boring season (TV-wise, that is).

King says they want "The Amazing Race Canada" to be "a little bit like a love letter to Canada" but wouldn't rule out expanding the format if the show is a smash.
"We're not married to this forever, at all. Let's see how this plays out. We definitely can see having Canadians go around the world or go to a different country or something," he says.

Let's try to keep Canada's first step in the TAR waters a little bit more positive on their daring "China Rush"-esque attempt. :xmas146 It looks like it will be better than the Brazilian version... *runs into sign*.

Just to warm up the discussion....

let's talk about :

'The Amazing Race Canada' Host: Who Should Helm The Reality Show? (http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2012/12/05/the-amazing-race-canada-host_n_2246115.html?utm_hp_ref=canada-tv)

Quote

OK, OK, we know that due to contractual obligations, most of these people couldn't realistically become the host of "The Amazing Race Canada." In fact, we're willing to bet that it'll be Ben Mulroney who gets the gig. But hey, it's fun to imagine, isn't it?

We've amassed a list of 23 Canadians who we think would do a good job as host, for one reason or another. All we can hope is that he/she matches the greatness that is the US' Phil Keoghan.

Did we miss anyone? Let us know below. You can also vote for your favourite contender in the slideshow.

2) Torrens - Would be an excellent host. He was on Joe Schmo 2 and a regular on Trailer Park Boys
7) Mochrie - Great choice
3) Stratus - Great choice charismatic and isn't high maintenance.
4) Kiwanuka - Was great on much music

The rest are either the usual boring suspects or would nagatively impact the show because of their swarmy annoying attitude/persona (Campanelli and Mulroney)

Best choice for this AND Big Brother Canada should be Jason Agnew.
He hosts:
* Door to Door (for the travel network) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfmRqgDx534 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfmRqgDx534)
* Splatalot (YTV/NickTV in the States) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55ELU01HQv4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55ELU01HQv4)
* Conventioneers (BiteTV/YouTube) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VSpZtHByCw&feature=share&list=PL5E42ED128138285F (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VSpZtHByCw&feature=share&list=PL5E42ED128138285F) NSFW
* Sunday Morning Trivia (CFRB1010 radio) - http://www.newstalk1010.com/Hosts/SundayMorning.aspx (http://www.newstalk1010.com/Hosts/SundayMorning.aspx)
* Live Audio Wrestling (TSN1050 et affliates) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-y2YD2O_zag (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-y2YD2O_zag)

PLUS he goes to karaoke! He is funny, gets around (travelled all over Canada/US for Door to Door and Conventioneers), has edge and is willing to get into the spirit of things.

The fact that I plan to see him shave my friend tonight has NOTHING to do with me pimping him so hard.
NONE.

Howie is good at one-day game shows like Deal or No Deal and that upcoming Take It All mini-game show on NBC. I'm not sure about him handling long-term competitions. "Got Talent" wasn't very fun after Mandel replaced "The Hoff". :cmas12

I have a feeling Daryn Jones will be hosting. Haven't heard of him from B or athlete-classed celebrity level and Phil back in TAR1 and Grant Bowler wasn't very chatted around back when the shows premiered.

There hasn't been any official word of when filming will be yet. But the show will be airing in "Summer 2013" (presumably July and August) and Applications are due on February 28th, with them saying if you make it to the next stage, you will be contacted for an interview in March.

So Presumably the interviews will be in March, final preparations in April, filming in May, airing in July and August.

• The Amazing Race Canada is in …

“I wish I knew the reason for that,” is King’s candid admission about why The Amazing Race resonates so much more with viewers in Canada than it does with Americans.

“We consume a lot of American media,” King continued. “Most of it bleeds over our border. Eighty per cent of what Americans like, Canadians like. But there’s always this oddball 20 per cent that Canadians love way more than Americans, and vice versa. Amazing Race has been a top three or top five show in Canada, really, for a decade. In the U.S., it’s decent. Clearly enough to stick on the air.”

The Amazing Race Canada will be an exceedingly expensive, complicated production to pull off, King admitted. He worried that the format’s age — 10 years — might mean CTV was a day late jumping in, but King noticed that not only have The Amazing Race’s ratings held steady in Canada over the years; they’ve climbed.

By airing The Amazing Race Canada in summer — ”We’ll do 10 weeks, in July and August” — King hopes to avoid the problem that hurt So You Think You Can Dance Canada so badly. The original Amazing Race airs in spring and fall. By airing in midsummer, The Amazing Race Canada will avoid a traffic jam.

...I wonder who the host will be

If it has to be a Canadian, perhaps some who have maybe not yet been discussed here:

William Shatner - will the contestants have to "boldly go where no man has gone before"?
Alex Trbeck - sometimes the contestants lives might be in jeopardy
Celine Dion - Perhaps the contestants, when the going gets tough, will break into "my heart will go on"!
Anne Murray - undoubtedly, some contestant from Toronto, climbing an ice mountain in the Yukon, will wish they were a snowbird.
Pierre Elliott Trudeau  -oh yeah, he's dead - fuddle duddle
The BearNakedLadies - sorry, forget them, I thought the title was litteral
David Cronenburg - can you imagine what he would think of for detours?
Pierre Poutine - oh, he doesn't really exist
Keanu Reeves - a detour could be a choice between the blue pill and the red pill

just some ideas.

Apparently the ParticiPaction duo applied ...

The Amazing Race Canada officially closed its open auditions as of noon Friday. And, while the show won’t officially announce which Canadian couplings will race across our great nation just yet, we here at Canada.com already have a clear favourite: Body Break duo Hal Johnson and Joanne McLeod.

The couple, who have been keeping fit and having fun as partners in life and nationally televised ads for 25 years, claim to have never missed an episode of the American reality series. So when CTV announced that it would be putting on a Canadian version, Johnson announced the couple’s participaction on Twitter.  “Joanne and I will be auditioning for #Amazing Race Canada as soon as the information is available,” Johnson sent to Body Break’s nearly 10,000 followers.

............................
And on February 27, with some encouragement from a Huffington Post Canada article, they did just that. Watch the video – which is just as awesome as you’d imagine –

While you're waiting for the batteries in your camera to recharge (because you'll need it for when TAR CA comes to your home town), lets turn our thoughts to what we know for sure about TAR CA:
Sponsors:
Chevrolet - all self driving will be in Chevys - I think we'll see a lot of self driving in Chevy Cruzes or Trax.
Air Canada - it will be the exclusive airline - so only places where AC flies - no WestJet or Porter
BlackBerry - clues may be sent via BlackBerry? Don't know how they'll fit this one in - maybe navigation apps? U Turns displayed on the Playbook?
INTERAC® - should be interesting - instead of cash at the pit stop release give the racers prepaid credit cards.

CTV is the broadcast network - so look for them to avoid locations that stink of Rogers - i.e. the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Rogers arena in Vancouver
Insight Productions - production company - Canada's equivalent of World Race Productions for TAR CA - based in Toronto - also produced Big Brother Canada amongst other things.

And I wasn't kidding about the camera thing. The race start is imminent - be ready. Watch the twitters!
