We (as in us at RFF) got a shout out on the TV Tonight blog.

David Knox has reported on our work as we spoiled TAR22 in NZ while reporting that TAR could come to Australia (NZ airlines to Bris or Melb)

Many of you who read my post (and post of some other users) on the site know that I use TV tonight for all of the breaking tv news in Australia (such as airdates and local rattings)

Quote
The Amazing Race (US) maybe on its way to Australia for a leg on the next season.

Diehard fans at realityfanforum are reporting contestants racing through New Zealand, with plenty of photographic evidence (warning: spoiler alert). GuardianOnline has also reported a visit to Christchurch, Phil Keoghan’s hometown, hit hard by earthquakes and a tourism downturn.

But there is also speculation racers are now Australia-bound, with talk of flights either Brisbane NZ805 (Arr: Bris: 4:30pm) or Melbourne NZ7911 (Arr: Melb: 5:50pm)

It wouldn’t be the first time TAR has raced through Australia, although so far Melbourne has missed out on a leg.

If you spy anything, just raise an eyebrow, Keoghan-like, and pass on any photos to you know where….

Thanks David for the shoutout and keep up the good work.

Maybe some from here tipped him off :-[

David has been good to us in the past, we normally get a couple of people posting replies after seeing the racers when they come to Australia. The biggest was the Cuba spoiler for TAR Aus Season 2.

found this suspicious video that i cannot open from a new zealand media site,

my concern is that showing an issue around father/son disabled team, which in fact, having an accident back in bora-bora island...

If there's any new zealand residents who subscribed to the site and can put the video onboard that would be amazing...  :hrt:  :cmas16

Probably, the other way around. Networks work on planning their schedules a year or two in advance; which is why live events (awards shows, concerts, sports events) have their dates planned out a couple of years or more in advance as much as possible.

Ford Creates Its Own Amazing Race with the 2012 Focus
Monday, December 10, 2012

Ford is creating a real-time interactive event called Focus Rally: America to help introduce the 2012 Ford Focus compact car.

The Focus Rally: America is a competition that puts 6 two-person teams against one another in a 5 event, cross-country rally in the Ford Focus. Each event will feature a challenge for the teams to complete and the winning team will be awarded with $100,000 and 10 Focuses for their fans and supporters.

This competition sounds quite close to the reality show “The Amazing Race” because it is being produced by Ford in conjunction with the reality shows creators, Elise Doganieri and Bertam van Munster.

The 5 events will be streamed on Hulu, an online hub for TV shows and movies. Short clips of the events will also be shown on YouTube, Facebook and Twitter to help spread the adventure.

The challenges are designed so that the teams can be guided by their social network.
The 6 teams will use Ford’s Sync system to stay in contact with their network of friends.
The car’s GPS function will also come into play. Ford hopes that many thousands of consumers will become engaged by watching the show on Hulu, becoming fans and followers of the rally teams on Facebook and actively participating in the various challenges.

Are you sure it's a new season? Here's the same text (http://albuquerqueford.donchalmersford.com/date/2011/09/) from the same dealership in Sep 2011--they're just reprinting their old stuff. And the focusrally website is down; the last capture for the wayback machine (http://web.archive.org/web/20110513001139/http://focusrally.com/) was May 2011. You can watch video clips on Hulu (http://www.hulu.com/#!focus-rally-america).

http://insidetv.ew.com/2013/01/23/amazing-race-22-new-cast/

Sitcom star Lisa Whelchel and former baseball MVP Jeff Kent may not be appearing, but The Amazing Race will trot out a few semi-celebrities of its own when the 22nd season of the reality hit premieres Feb. 17 on CBS. And the teams will have a new twist to contend with at the very start.
Headlining the cast are Jennifer Kuhle and Caroline Cutbirth of the country band Stealing Angels. Kuhle is the granddaughter of John Wayne while Cutbirth is a direct descendant of Daniel Boone. They will be competing against former NHL player Bates Battaglia and his brother Anthony, as well as YouTube channel hosts Joey Graceffa and Meghan Camarena. Also among the 11 new teams of two competing is a pair of twin doctors, two roller derby moms, and a father and son who both have survived cancer. (The full cast list is below.)
Teams this season will travel over 30,000 miles through nine countries on five different continents. Along the way they will, according to CBS, “skydive from 10,000 feet in Bora Bora, participate in a Shemozzle race in New Zealand, hunt for scorpions with the Bushmen of Botswana and scale the treacherous north face of the Eiger Mountain in Switzerland.”
They also will have a new twist thrown at them. While in the past the first team to arrive at the initial Pit Stop has earned an Express Pass that allows them to skip any task of their choosing, the team that arrives before all others at this season’s first Pit Stop will receive two Express Passes — one to keep for themselves and another one that must be given to another team of their choosing before the end of the fourth leg. It has the power of making one other team very happy, and several others unhappy over not receiving it.

Former NHLer Battaglia to compete on 'Amazing Race'

A familiar face to many hockey fans is about to embark on a whole new kind of competition.

In an announcement made Wednesday morning, it was revealed that longtime NHL player Bates Battaglia will be competing alongside his brother, Anthony, in the next season of CBS' award-winning show "The Amazing Race."

The Battaglia brothers will make up one of 11 teams engaging in an around-the-world chase in which the winner will earn $1 million.

The elder Battaglia brother, Bates played 580 games in the NHL, most of them with the Carolina Hurricanes, whom he helped lead to the 2002 Stanley Cup Final where they lost to the Detroit Red Wings. His younger brother, Anthony, played collegiately at Western Michigan University before suiting up for a number of minor-league teams, including a stint this season with the Huntsville Havoc of the Southern Professional Hockey League.

This won't be the first time the Battaglia brothers compete on a team together. The pair spent part of the 2010-11 season playing together on the Tulsa Oilers of the Central Hockey League. Prior to that, they were teammates in 2004-05 with the Mississippi Sea Wolves of the East Coast Hockey League.

Over the course of the show's history, a variety of pro athletes have competed on "The Amazing Race." Former NFL players Ken Green and Marcus Pollard competed on the show in 2008 and 2011 respectively. Soccer player Andrew Weber appeared on the program last year, while former Cleveland Indians coach Steve Smith competed in 2010.

Pro bullriding brothers Cord and Jet McCoy placed second on the show in 2010 and Harlem Globetrotter teammates Herbert "Flight Time" Lang and Nathaniel "Big Easy" Lofton finished fourth in 2009.

The 22nd season of "The Amazing Race" premieres on Sunday, Feb. 17 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.

7 Things to Know About the 'Amazing Race' Season 22 Premiere

Thursday, February 07, 2013

The new season of The Amazing Race begins Sunday, February 17 at 8pm on CBS, and as always, its tense, exciting, visually stunning and full of colorful characters.

Season 22 brings a new twist, new locations and new adventures. Here are seven things about the first leg to get you excited for the show's return.

The New Twist Will Cause Drama

The twist for season 22 is that the winners of the first leg not only get an Express Pass, but they get a second Express Pass that they must give to another team at some point before the end of the fourth leg. There's a lot of thought and strategy regarding this twist that will almost certainly end in drama, especially because of an early alliance.

Sandcastles = Haystacks

The cruelest Roadblock in the history of the show is the one where contestants had to unravel massive haystacks to find a clue. The season 22 premiere features something similar where teams must dig through 400 sandcastles to find a clue. The twist? If it doesn't contain one, they must rebuild the sandcastle before moving on. As is always the case, there's plenty of schadenfreude as some teams look for hours while others show up and quickly find it.

Chuck's Hair Is the Star

There's no denying the star power of Chuck's hair. It's like Kenny Powers, a perm mullet that is utterly ridiculous, especially on a grown man who loves to hunt and practice taxidermy so he can remind himself of his many kills. With any other haircut that might be creepy, but with Chuck it's kind of hilarious.

Max and Katie Are Likeably Unlikeable

Every season of The Amazing Race has a couple that is sure to explode at some point, either on each other or on another team. This season that honor will almost certainly go to Max and Katie, who were married just three weeks before starting the Race. Their introductory package includes a segment where she takes a cigar out of a humidor and gives it to him to smoke, which tells you everything you need to know about them. But unlike past couples, these two know their weaknesses as revealed in this awesome confessional:

Katie: "In our everyday life, we don't have many friends. I don't care."
Max: "Her likeability factor is low when it comes to strangers."
Katie: "It's probably a zero."

That kind of self-awareness actually makes me like them.

15 Seconds of Joey Is More Than Enough

Joey is a YouTube star, because apparently we live in a world where that is considered a career. He's very bubbly. At one point he's being his typical "Hey everybody, look at me!" self and one of the twin OB-GYNs simply mutters under his breath "Stop talking." I agree. If Joey and Meghan last the whole Race, he will become unbearable. Heck, if he lasts more than two legs, he will be unbearable.

Lance Armstrong Isn't the Only Cyclist with Testicular Cancer

Dave and Connor are a father and son who are both cancer survivors, and son Connor is a professional cyclist whose testicular cancer is in remission. Has anyone done a study on a correlation between cancer and riding a bike? All jokes aside, they are a very inspiring pair, although if every single interview with them is going to be all about how inspirational they are, it could get old very fast.

Bates and Anthony Will Be the Fan Favorites

In terms of pure likeability, no one comes close to former professional hockey brothers Bates and Anthony. They're charming in that dopey, loveable kind of way that makes you immediately want them to succeed.

Amazing Race's Phil Keoghan: There Are More Calculated Moves This Season
Feb 14, 2013 10:09 PM ET
by Joyce Eng

After doubling up on prize money last season (for one team at least), The Amazing Race is doubling up on something else for Season 22 (premieres Sunday, 8/7c, CBS): the Express Pass. In a new twist, the winners of the first leg will not only get an Express Pass for themselves, but a second Express Pass to give to another team by the fourth leg. "We really don't like to deviate too much from what works," host Phil Keoghan tells TVGuide.com. "This time, you can give one Express Pass away. All of the sudden, the first place team has that power and you create a situation where the other teams want to suck up to that team. 'Can you be my BFF and by the way, can I have that Express Pass?' It's little tweaks like that that I think keep it interesting for the audience and the Racers."

So what else can you expect this season? (Well, three teams quitting a task on the first leg in Bora Bora, for starters.) Keoghan, who's training for a follow-up to his MS research documentary The Ride, gives us the scoop.

You guys have got a hot streak going with your premieres. Something wild or unpredictable has happened in the past couple, and now three teams quit a Roadblock.
Phil Keoghan: Yeah, I think the first leg always has the greatest potential for something to go wrong because there are more teams in that leg than any other leg. They're racing for the first time, so they think they know more than they know. And suddenly they find themselves in a really stressful situation. I was going to say we have the recipe for disaster and when I say "disaster," I mean great content for great television. ... I wasn't surprised they did it. The way the whole thing worked out, the choice they made was a pretty practical one. I didn't realize that the challenge [finding a clue underneath hundreds of sandcastles] was going to stump the teams the way it did. It really was the luck of the draw.

It's sort of like when Boston Rob convinced people to sit out the meat-eating Roadblock in Season 7.
Keoghan: That was probably one of the first times that that was a calculated move. There are more calculated moves this season.
What you're going to see is teams learn that ultimately, you're gonna have to knuckle down and do the work. Even going back to the example of Rob, who met his own demise later, at the end of the day, it's really is about getting from place to place as fast as you can and completing the challenges as effectively as you can. There's only so much you can do as far as sit out, outthink or manipulate. It's not a show that really lends itself to those kinds of tactics, which is one of the reasons I like it. You can be outdone if you try to over-think the Race. You can be outdone if you don't try to think at all too.

Some of the teams try to devise a pact to ensure a "fair" allocation of the second Express Pass, but what are the chances that the first place team keeps its word?
Keoghan: [Laughs] That's the thing. That's human nature. It all sounds good when you don't have it, but ultimately, they're not breaking any rule by changing their minds. There's a dilemma in agreeing to the pact. You don't know how strong the teams are. You've got to give it away early, but you can't judge the other teams yet, so you might give it away to someone who could turn out to be your biggest competition and you could lose face. You're going to see them deliberate. It's more calculated because they start to think about it and see the strength of the other team that, according to the pact, is supposed to get it.

The cast is very eclectic. Max and Katie are the clear villains, and I love how they relish in their villainy. They freely admit they don't have friends in real life and they put on a façade when they talk to other teams. Will the other teams catch on eventually?
Keoghan: [Laughs] They have great personalities and are funny. ... What you see in the Race always is you never know how teams evolve. Sometimes it's teams who appear to be nice in the beginning who twist and become a little exclusive. Some are talking to some and not others. I just love that on our show. We always see such crazy diversity. We have OBGYN twin brothers [Idries and Jamil], who are very smart and very physically imposing, funny, and right next to them is Chuck. It's like we have 11 teams and a mullet.

That hair needs its own show.
Keoghan: That hair — I mean, in the dictionary, where it says "mullet," they need a picture of his. It's the most powerful mullet I've ever seen. I go back to the mullet days and I've never seen a mullet like that. One of the most fascinating things about the mullet is seeing how it reacts on the Race in the different weather conditions. He's in taxidermy, and it's like he took one of his dead animals and put it on his head. At one point it didn't look real and I had to ask him ... and he pulled on it really hard to show me. I didn't touch it! It's like an Egyptian carpet. You've gotta see this thing in HD. It's going to blow people away.

Besides the mullet, what teams should we keep an eye on?
Keoghan: I love the roller derby moms [Mona and Beth]. They're strong, confident, physically imposing women who are ready for a challenge. They remind me of the bowling moms. They have that go-get-'em attitude. We've been wanting a team like that back on the Race for a while. I think there are a lot of strong women like that and it's good to have them represented on the show. The hockey players [Bates and Anthony] — Bates checked Wayne Gretzky in his first game. They're definitely not scared. [YouTube stars] Joey and Meghan are so enthusiastic, especially Joey. When he jumps for joy, it's like he's jumping out of his shoes.

Let's talk about the challenges. What is this Shemozzle in your home country of New Zealand?
Keoghan: It's a shepherd dog's race. I've done it; that's inherently part of being from New Zealand. It's sort of like these mud obstacle races in America. There are a bunch of crazy ingredients, like molasses, eggs, feathers, mud, water, hay, trucks, trailers, grass and bubbles. I'm so excited about going back to New Zealand. We were there in Seasons, 2, 5, and 13, when my dad was the greeter. Now we're actually in my hometown of Christchurch and Canterbury. They've had a lot of suffering the past few years [with the 2011 earthquake], so on a personal level, I was so keen to go back and to show the world that Canterbury and Christchurch have picked themselves up. It's important to show how places come back.

What other challenges can we look forward to?
Keoghan: We go out with a bushman in Botswana for scorpion-hunting. What makes the Race work so well is you go from the furnace in Africa to the freezer on the edge of the Eiger in Switzerland in one episode, and the challenges definitely reflect that.

Will we see any craziness on the level of the rockers losing their passports last season?
Keoghan: Yes. Early on in the season, there are a couple of big game-changing moments. You might say heartbreaking moments as well.

Heartbreaking how? Someone has to pull out? Are they injured?
Keoghan: Teams are put in a really challenging situation where they're drawing on all their strength to decide what to do and it's difficult. It's not too dissimilar to what happened to the rockers. In the rockers' case, they really had no out, but there are moments where teams find themselves saying, "Is this it? Are we done for?"

You've said that you suck at predicting the final three. How off or close were you this time?
Keoghan: I was off again. [Laughs] At least I admit it! I did manage to pick two teams who made the top five. That's the best I've done in a long, long time. I don't mind admitting that I suck at picking the finalists.

I don't think anyone predicted the Beekmans to win last season though.
Keoghan: Yeah. I love the Beekmans, but I never saw that either and not even while the Race was going on. They were certainly not the MVP, but when it mattered, they came through. Who doesn't love an underdog? I don't know how the hell they did what they did.

Any word on a Season 23?
Keoghan: We're gearing up. Hopefully there'll be an official announcement at some point, but as always, we start working on the next season regardless. ... There's been some discussion about the route and new places. But as usual, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Let's not make the family edition again!

The Amazing Race premieres Sunday at 8/7c on CBS

Also it looks liek the Botswana - Switzerland is one leg as opposed to Switzerland to Germany.

That's gonna be REALLY tiring, mind you, never gonna be as tiring as Turkey -> France ->Cuba and then another leg in Cuba with not much in the way of rest

'Amazing Race' Season 22 Preview: 'Crazy Things Are Going to Happen' (Video)

Host Phil Keoghan and executive producer Bertram van Munster spill secrets to THR about the upcoming season of CBS' reality competition.

Emmys 2012: The 'Amazing Race' Creator Feared Cancellation Until Their First Win
CBS' reality competition returns at 8 p.m. Sunday with 11 teams competing for the $1 million prize. Among the competitors are a pair of country singers, two YouTube hosts and a couple who were married only four weeks before the Race started.
As the teams prepped for the start of competition -- taking them on a 30,000-plus-mile trip, visiting five continents and nine countries -- host Phil Keoghan and co-creator/executive producer Bertram van Munster sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to give a preview of the upcoming season.

"Now we have more than 10 years of experience doing this, and we've got a phenomenal route laid out, with great challenges," van Munster says. "It's going to be so crazy. It's guaranteed not to bore you. Crazy things will happen."
Keoghan reveals that the show will return to New Zealand for the fourth time, visiting his hometown of Christchurch, which was hit by a devastating earthquake in 2011 that resulted in 185 deaths. "This is a great opportunity for us to go back and show the place in a more positive light," he says, adding: "We've got some really cool stuff set up there for the teams."
Meanwhile, van Munster reveals that the first leg will take the teams to Bora Bora, where they will have to do a parachute jump out of a helicopter. "It's very intimidating," he says. "It's almost a form of base-jumping, but out of a helicopter at 10,000 feet. It gets pretty hairy. And I’m not sure everyone knows where Bora Bora is; that's another part of the challenge."
From there, they also travel to Bali, Indonesia; Botswana; and Switzerland. Keoghan adds that this Race is 25 days long, which is four days longer than the previous season.
This season of the competition also will feature a new twist wherein the first team to check in at the first pit-stop will earn two “Express Passes” -- one to keep for themselves and one that must be given to another team by the end of the fourth leg of the race.

In addition, Keoghan reveals, "We have a switchback coming that's a classic Amazing Race moment that we're going to repeat. We know from past experience that this is going to tweak them."
As for which teams might do well, Keoghan has his eye on a couple of duos: the roller-derby-mom duo of Mona Egender and Beth Bandimere ("I think they are going to be fiercely competitive") and father-son cancer survivors David and Connor O'Leary ("They come on the show with a passionate story to share").
Other potential standouts, he says, are pro hockey-player brothers Bates and Anthony Battaglia;  firefighters Matthew Davis and Daniel Moss; and twin brothers Idries and Jamil Abdur-Rahman, who work together as OB/GYN physicians.
Keoghan also says he gives all the teams advice before each Race begins. Among his tips: Always read the clue carefully, and don't isolate yourselves from the other teams. "You want to make your own decisions, but at the same time, you want to keep your competition close so you know where you're at," he says.
Van Munster adds that one competitor actually got hurt just before the first leg of the competition got under way at Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles. "Unfortunately, she doesn’t even know what's coming," he says. "This is nothing. We're in Los Angeles, America. We have medics. This is all good."
So does the executive producer, who created the show with his wife, fellow EP Elise Doganieri, find it hard to come up with fresh and new challenges every season?
"No, the world is a great place, and there's lots of things we can do," he says. "As long as viewers love what we're doing, we'll keep doing it."

Spouses and producing partners Bertram van Munster and Elise Doganieri take a break during a photo shoot at the "Amazing Race" headquarters, which shares an office building with an airline in El Segundo, Calif., just south of LAX. It's a rare chilly and rainy day in Southern California, pleasing van Munster, who says it reminds him of the East Coast.

He and Doganieri then discuss how this year's global adventure begins.

"We start here in Los Angeles at the [Griffith] Observatory," van Munster tells Zap2it. "They have to get in cars, and there's two ways out. One way is blocked, and the other one, you go straight out. Of course, four or five people are going to drive straight into the blocked street."

Then, after braving Los Angeles traffic to catch a plane, the contestants head off to Bora Bora in French Polynesia -- but there aren't exactly a beach chair and an umbrella drink waiting for them.

"They have to go up in a helicopter," says van Munster, "over the island of Bora Bora. The helicopter starts in midair, hovers, and then they have to jump out. That is very intimidating. They know nothing in advance. They realize it once they're up there.

"Going up in a helicopter, hovering at 10,000 feet and jumping over an island that's basically a dot in the ocean, not knowing where you're going to land with this thing, it's daunting. So, I must say, they all did it. They screamed their little hearts out on the way down. They fall like a brick out of this helicopter."

Adds Doganieri, "We were so lucky with the weather, too. The islands look stunning from the sky. You see white sand beaches and turquoise water and the deep blue sea."

After a couple of shows around French Polynesia, the 11 teams then head to New Zealand, where they participate in a shemozzle race. What, you ask, is a shemozzle race? If you've seen the movie "Babe," which was shot in New Zealand, it may look familiar.

"It's the roadblock," Doganieri says. "It's a farmers obstacle course. Farmers run with their sheepdogs. So we had the contestants do this course with a dog, which was so much fun.

"It was muddy and rainy. They've got to climb up hay bales, slide down giant mud hills into pools of water. It's just hysterically funny. And they have to carry eggs without cracking them while doing this whole race."

Incidentally, there's one new twist this year. The first team to check in at the first pit stop will earn two "Express Passes" -- one to keep and one that must be given to another team by the end of the fourth leg of the race.

Says van Munster, "Again, we found another way to make our way around the world in a unique way."

The Amazing Race host Phil Keoghan has teased that there are "heartbreaking" moments this season.

The CBS competition premiered its 22nd season last night (February 17) but Keoghan told TV Guide that the contestants will not have an easy ride.

Keoghan also hinted that people's perceptions of the teams may change as the season develops, saying: "What you see in the Race always is you never know how teams evolve.

Phil Keoghan has hinted at "heartbreaking" moments this season

"Sometimes it's teams who appear to be nice in the beginning who twist and become a little exclusive. Some are talking to some and not others. I just love that on our show. We always see such crazy diversity."

He added that he had been unable to pick the final three teams this season, joking: "At least I admit it!

"I did manage to pick two teams who made the top five. That's the best I've done in a long, long time. I don't mind admitting that I suck at picking the finalists."

Taking 'The Amazing Race' To Africa
Posted: 03/19/2013 7:00 am

There is something very special about the continent of Africa. The show I work on, The Amazing Race, has gone to nearly 20 African countries in the past 22 seasons and the diversity of geography and culture is like no other place on Earth.

This particular leg of the Race we went to Botswana, a landlocked country in Southern Africa that is 70% covered by the Kalahari Desert.

For this episode, we spent time at the Royal Tree Game Reserve outside the city of Maun. It's easy to feel at one with nature when you're sleeping in a wonderful tent under the stars on a private reserve on the banks of the Thamalakane River. The night sky is vast and mesmerizing; and due to the remote location we were in, every star and constellation in the Southern Hemisphere was clearly visible like tiny diamonds dancing across the sky.

Africa awakens your senses; the sights, sounds and smells are unique. This happens when you fly on a little bush plane, land and take that first step. It's something I look forward to when I return; it's welcoming and warm and there is something very pure about the experience. There is a silence and calm and you are instantly transported back in time.

At night at the safari camp there is such peace -- no sirens, car horns or radios blaring -- but what you do hear are the sounds of the animals around you -- like a lion walking by your tent! And hearing the sound of his roar for the first time can be a bit unnerving. In the morning, you'll see their tracks right outside your tent.

Botswana is home to The "Big 5" -- the lion, African elephant, Cape buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros. Seeing animals roaming unrestricted in their natural environment is a spectacle. Most of us are used to seeing them in cages in zoos. Here, you're in the cage -- your vehicle -- while they wander around freely; it's amazing. In fact, I always have to fight the urge to get out of my safari vehicle when I see an animal close by because they are so beautiful, you just want to get close. Obviously, they're wild animals and you should never do that, but it's hard not to feel a connection when there's so little separating us.

In many ways, Botswana is a country frozen in time. We had our contestants meet with the local bushmen and learn how they live their everyday lives. The things we take for granted are tasks they have to perform every day to survive -- from things as "simple" as starting a fire and getting water from a well to hunting for food.

What the bushmen can do in minutes took an hour or more for many of our contestants.

We take pride in the fact that the Race takes contestants and viewers to places they've never been, or even seen, before. In fact, most of the contestants had no idea where Botswana was. It's fascinating how the contestants and the African bushmen were awed by each other's cultural differences.

That's really what we strive to achieve with the show: treat viewers to a cultural experience, not just bombard them with tourist landmarks. We want the contestants -- and, by proxy, our viewers -- to really get a sense of what it's like to live in the places we travel to.

Bring Bug Spray And Leave The Heels At Home...
Posted: 02/15/2013 7:00 am
As executive producer of The Amazing Race, I spend many weeks each year traveling -- from scouting locations around the world to filming the contestants from start to the finish line as they race. Having just come off my 22nd season of the show, I feel like I can finally say I have packing and preparing to leave home down to a science.

My husband, Bertram van Munster, also produces the show, so he travels just as much as I do. First and foremost, we have a four-year-old daughter who needs to be cared for while we're away. We have a dog, too, and have to make sure he's taken care of as well. I'm fortunate to have wonderful parents who have been fantastic about stepping in while we're on the road, and who really enjoy spending this special time with our daughter.

To ease the transition, a few days before I leave I fly my mother out to Los Angeles from New York where she lives. I like to give her some time with her granddaughter to catch up and normalize their routine before I take off.

By the time we get to the show's finale, which films in the States, I usually fly my daughter and parents out to location, and find another caregiver in L.A. to watch our dog. Hotels with adjoining rooms are perfect for us during this time, so we can work during the day and have family time together at night.

For us, as for a lot of constant travelers, packing up a life to fit in one carry-on bag is an incredible challenge. Out of sheer necessity, it only took me one season on The Amazing Race to create a system that works great for me. I have a list of items, which I know by heart now, so I can pack the day I leave and still fit everything in.

I also live by some hard and fast packing rules:

Remember the Things You Don't Need: a hair dryer, heels of any kind or fancy evening clothes. When I'm traveling, I'm working. I find that as much as I might want to be a tourist in some of the fascinating locales where we shoot, I have very little downtime for any kind of fancy meals or nights on the town, so dresses and uncomfortable shoes are out; ponytails and jeans are my best friends.

Size Items to Fit: I won't neglect certain essentials -- sunscreen, moisturizer, insect repellent, vitamins and medications -- but I buy small, portable containers to make sure that I only pack as much as I need.

Pack All-Weather Gear: I have a special section of my closet set aside for trips. Quick-drying clothing and layers are incredibly important, since I might start in Alaska and be in Jamaica two days later.

Wear the Same Few Outfits: I learned quickly that I tend to wear the same few things over and over on the road, so I take just a few outfits with me everywhere I go, and mix and match.

For season 22, our first stop was Bora Bora. Every season, we try to go somewhere new for the first leg of the race. I always love seeing a place for the first time. The water in Bora Bora is like nowhere else in the world; it's many beautiful shades of blue. While I was scouting last summer, gorgeous stingrays would come right up to me in the water and let me feed them.

The landscape was stunning, but my favorite part of scouting is the opportunity to really dig deep into the culture where I'm staying. Bora Bora is full of friendly and generous people who truly respect where they live and what they have.

We visited the house of Tahiti's spear-throwing champion, who lives on top of a hill with the most gorgeous view of the ocean and the entire island. As a foreigner who typically works in a concrete jungle, I was really moved seeing the view that they wake up to every day, and how they live without the distractions of technology. It was incredibly refreshing and peaceful. The family made us lunch, and we all took some unscheduled time out to eat together in a little grass hut on the beach. It was one of those moments when I realized how fortunate I am to have this job and to get to experience, if only just for a little while, different cultures and how other people live their lives

CBS apologizes to veterans for 'Amazing Race' episode
Reuters

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - U.S. TV network CBS has apologized after its Emmy-winning reality series "The Amazing Race" angered veterans with an episode featuring Vietnamese communist propaganda.

The show's host, Phil Keoghan, apologized before the start of Sunday's show for the March 17 episode in which participants in Hanoi were required to memorize a pro-communist song and use a downed U.S. B-52 bomber aircraft in the city as a prop.

"We want to apologize to veterans - particularly those who served in Vietnam - as well as to their families and any viewers who were offended by the broadcast," said Keoghan, reading from a statement.

"The Amazing Race" is a competition in which teams travel around the world to complete challenges and vie for a $1 million cash prize.

About 58,000 U.S. troops were killed during the Vietnam War (1964-1975) against communist North Vietnam. More than 7 million U.S. Vietnam veterans are still alive.

James E. Koutz, a Vietnam veteran and head of the American Legion veterans group who demanded an apology last week from CBS, said on Monday he believed the network's statement was "sincere and heartfelt."

"America is a forgiving country," Koutz said in a statement. "When you make a mistake, you own up to it."

U.S. Senator John McCain of Arizona, a former prisoner of war in North Vietnam and one of the country's most prominent Vietnam veterans, said CBS "did the right thing by apologizing."

"We all make mistakes - the issue is closed," McCain said on Twitter.

A little hard to tell if that is for the 24th as well?

If you are a regular series, you run 2013 to 14.

We have two separate, fall 2013 and spring 2014. Hopefully this means BOTH!

Anyway, they are a bit slow about 23!

Peach, it gets complicated as you know; but the terminology they often use is "cycle" or "edition" to distinguish between the autumn and spring airings. And CBS refers to the broadcast year as a "season."

We've had this discussion in the past and it is maddening to try and figure out with any certainty what they mean. However, by the time we get to the end of May, they would have to had cast 23 and would be close to posting online for 24 in order to cast and film by the time they normally need to.

The timing may be off because February 2014 will be the Sochi Winter Olympics, and as you may know the Oscars have already announced that it will be held the first Sunday in March in 2014 and returning to February in 2015.

My opinion (and that's all it is) is that CBS means by "season" not just AR23 but the equivalent for all its other shows, which is a complete broadcasting year (typically September to May with a break in the middle of two Amazing race seasons). I also believe that neither the Academy Awards nor the Olympics will deter CBS from putting the Amazing Race where it fits in their schedule. In February AR22 got low ratings when competing against the Academy Awards, but that may be better than a short race or pushing AR24 into June 2014.

NBC has the Sochi Olympics broadcasting rights Feb.  7 - 23, 2014 and ABC has the Academy Awards broadcast rights March 2, 2014.

It's nice to look at the final pit stop mat and think "Wow! I've been right at that exact spot!" I probably just walked across it getting from one place to another, but still I was there.

The location of the mat on the back side of the mansion facing the water makes me wonder if the teams are coming into Mount Vernon from the Potomac River on a boat rather than by car or taxi.

An interview with Phil about season finale and... future season
http://www.tvguide.com/News/Amazing-Race-Finale-Phil-Keoghan-1064929.aspx

It's hard to top Josh and Brent's shocking win last season, but Phil Keoghan promises that Sunday's Amazing Race finale will be another tight one. "It's very close," he tells TVGuide.com. "It will keep viewers absolutely guessing until the end who's going to win. It's not one of those finales where one team has been in the lead the whole time." The two-hour finale (8/7c, CBS) finds hockey players Bates and Anthony, newlyweds Max and Katie, country singers Caroline and Jennifer, and roller derby moms Mona and Beth racing through Belfast, Ireland, where one team will be eliminated, and then Washington, D.C. for the final leg.

Find out what else you can expect from the episode, why Keoghan's still saying "oy vey" about John and Jessica's Express Pass fail and more.

Get the scoop on 39 must-watch finales

What do you think of the final four? You said earlier this season you only picked two out of the top five teams.
Phil Keoghan: [Laughs] I did! I love the teams we have left. They're really diverse. ... It's kind of perfect from that point of view. The country singers, while they may have been flirting with the hockey players, they're more focused on the prize now. The hockey players have been looking for love since Day 1. To be honest with you, I think they still have love in their eyes. And if there's one thing that will come in the way of a man's focus, it's a woman! The girls have used that to their advantage when it suited them.

The girls are more followers than the guys are.
Keoghan: I would agree. They follow more. The hockey players are certainly not intimidated by anything. In terms of the strongest female team, you'll have to look at the roller derby moms. They're really determined and have been fighting hard to stay in. They're used to going head-to-head in competition. And Max and Katie — I didn't see [them making it this far]. They would have to take the award for Most Improved Players. They bickered a lot in the beginning. I don't know what's changed. ... Maybe their Speed Bump and issues in Botswana were a wakeup call.

The hockey players, singers, and Max and Katie have an alliance. Are they going to try to oust the roller derby moms?
Keoghan: Well, I don't think any alliance works this late in the Race. If you start to focus on alliances at this stage, you get into trouble. You have to stop the flirting, stop the teasing and the rest of it. I didn't say there won't be flirting anymore, but flirting isn't going to help. Leave the rest for the after-party.

The final leg's in D.C. and the briefcase task looks like the Family Edition one. Is this another Switchback?
Keoghan: I'd say it's a little bit of a flashback. It's a very cool challenge. ... We had some great challenges. You might even see the president in the episode! ... We have a brainteaser. We love having things that forces team under pressure to think. They see other people there and start to panic. The more they panic, the more we know we're getting a good show. We have a challenge that surprises where it's like the flags last season and you don't know who's actually going to come out on top. The finish is close. ... When it comes to the final leg and you know there are teams right behind you and the finish is right there, it's just hard to keep your composure. I don't know [if anyone] makes a really poor decision, but there's absolutely frustration. You may be a little surprised at who wins. And that's a good thing.

Amazing Race's Joey and Meghan: It's our fault for not being thorough

Like the Beekmans last season? Where does this rank compared to that?
Keoghan: That was more than a surprise. That was a shock! [Laughs] This is just a surprise. Just because everything has been leaning one way in the leg and then all of the sudden it turns. That's what I love about the show — things can turn on a dime. You don't know how people will react to certain situations.

Speaking of that, John and Jessica failed to use their Express Pass.
Keoghan: Oh, my God! Oy vey! That's all I could think to say then. I didn't know how to describe it. Again, we do 12 shows in 21 days. When he looks back at that with time, he's going to go, "What was I thinking? Why did I say 'no regrets'?"

Actually, when I talked to them, he stood by his comments.
Keoghan: Really? I still don't understand to this day what it was about. I understand them thinking a team might be behind them and not using it, but I don't understand him not wanting to admit that he was disappointed that he made a mistake. What was it in the end? Was he able to articulate it?

He said they don't need the money because they were there for the adventure, so that's why he was OK with the elimination.
Keoghan: I still don't get it. He was like, "That's the way it is." It's like surely you can't shut off your emotions to the point where you don't have a sense of regret. It's just a natural human reaction to go, "Aw, man! Are you kidding? I thought there was another team. All we had to do was use the Express Pass? Ugh!" I don't know if it was pride or ego or what, but he wouldn't allow himself to go there. That's the part I thought was "oy vey." I was like, "At least you can say to your partner, 'I'm sorry. You kept telling me to play it. I made a mistake.'" Don't pretend it didn't happen and you're not disappointed.

Maybe he's still too embarrassed. Do you think that was on the level of losing your passport?
Keoghan: It's definitely up there. The Express Pass is there to bail you out of trouble, so use it. The whole losing the passport thing, I mean, you strap that onto your body. You can lose your bag or your mind, but the passport is your ticket to staying in the Race. I think that's the biggest mistake you can make. However, everyone who's lost a passport on the show has admitted that they made a mistake!

Fall TV Scorecard: What's canceled?

What's the latest on Season 23?
Keoghan: Can you believe it's been 23 seasons? We continue to get teams we could've never dreamed up. There are certain teams you don't even know are out there until you see the combination. Expect some different, new casting announcements. I've started writing the scripts for next season and the challenges are great. ... We will have new places [and we'll start shooting] in the summer. We don't tell people specific dates because they find us anyway. That's one of the things that's changed dramatically since Season 1 with social media.

There are literally fans from around the world who come together and live-tweet and collect sightings of you and the teams. Does that bother you guys? Or do you like that it's almost interactive now? Twitter did help Kaylani get her passport back.
Keoghan: Exactly. There are live updates all the time. Personally, I think it's exciting. What's weird was when we were going one way in an airport and The Amazing Race Asia team was going the other way, but neither of us had any idea that the other would be there. I think anyone who was trying to keep track would've been extremely confused. One of the other franchises was shooting in Christchurch [New Zealand] and my friend emailed me and said, "I can't believe you came to Christchurch and didn't even give me a call." I was like, "What are you talking about?" He manages the Christchurch airport and he said, "I saw the crew and the racers running around the airport." I was like, "Sorry, dude, that wasn't me." But Twitter and social media have added a whole new element for fans. Fans love being in the know. I think overall, our fans are pretty good. They don't give away too much. Sometimes people love dropping spoilers, but our fans are good. They tend to do it in such a way that doesn't ruin it for fans who don't want to know.

Sometimes they withhold major spoilers until after the season's over.
Keoghan: And we love that because I think they think they're part of something bigger. They don't feel like they have to spoil everything. Little teases here and there to whet the appetite are enough.

You're also working on a new show, The Phil Keoghan Project, that's inspired by your dad. What's the latest on that?
Keoghan: We're developing it and taking applications now. My dad grew up working hard, getting up at 5 a.m. to work in the garden. My family is blue-collar people. My dad would always say he came from a hardened generation. He'd say, "All these people are paying now for designer bodies, but my friend built his strength on the farm." He admires people who never had a chance to compete on a sports field, but they still have this functional gift to use their strength in an amazing way. ... So I want to celebrate those blue-collar jobs. I've always been fascinated by people who push themselves to the limit.

'Amazing Race' Host Phil Keoghan Spills Secrets on Season 22 Finale'

Sunday's episode of CBS' reality competition takes the teams to Ireland and Washington, D.C. "We even got the president involved," the host tells THR.

One team is about to be named the winner of The Amazing Race's 22nd season.

One of the final four teams -- newlyweds Max and Katie Bichler; roller-derby moms Mona Egender and Beth Bandimere; hockey brothers Bates and Anthony Battaglia; or friends/country singers Caroline Cutbirth and Jennifer Kuhle -- will win the $1 million prize in the season finale of CBS' reality competition, airing at 8 p.m. Sunday.

Ahead of the two-hour broadcast, host Phil Keoghan gives The Hollywood Reporter a preview of what fans can expect to see -- and shares some of his thoughts on the season's most memorable moments.

The Hollywood Reporter: Were you surprised by any of the teams that made it to the final four?
Phil Keoghan: I was very surprised with Max and Katie. They started out this Race near the back of the pack and seemed to be out of sync for the first half of the Race. But I think the turning point was when they got to Botswana and were pulled over for speeding. They’ve really come into their own over the past couple of episodes and seem to be firing on all cylinders, especially winning the last leg. They’re certainly not lacking any confidence right now -- let’s hope they haven’t peaked too early.

THR: Can you give our readers a preview of the finale?
Keoghan: We have a great two-hour finale. We start in Belfast, Ireland, with bog snorkeling, which is a fascinating local sport there in Ireland that was dreamed up over a pint of beer. It’s extremely claustrophobic and much tougher than it looks … trying to swim in the frigid, dirty water … the perfect recipe for a cramp. We’ll get down to the final three teams in Belfast before heading out to our nation’s capital in Washington, where we send the teams around to a ton of historical landmarks. And once again, it’s a very close finish. The cool thing is that since our last visit, you’ll now get to see D.C. in HD. We even got the president involved.

THR: Mona and Beth are certainly the outsiders at this point. Do they still have a shot at winning?
Keoghan: The "roller derby moms" are a very strong team -- just think about what they do for a living. You can absolutely never count this team out of the mix. If they have any weakness, it’s that they don’t seem to be good with directions. And in terms of being outsiders, I don’t really think alliances come into play at this stage of the game. It’s every man or woman for themselves on Sunday night. If there’s one thing you can say about an Amazing Race finish, it’s that for more than a decade, it’s been unpredictable.

THR: Looking back over the season, what was your favorite moment?
Keoghan: For me, it was the Schemozzle Race in New Zealand. That was my old high school friend’s farm. I was really proud to share my homeland and friends with the viewers, the cast and of course, the crew. The ariel footage over the Rakaia River was just breathtaking. Also, the best reactions all season came from watching the teams see a live scorpion go inside the mouth of a bushman in Botswana. Max’s expression was priceless.

THR: What was the moment that surprised you the most?
Keoghan: Big surprise for me were the firemen [Matthew Davis and Daniel Moss] getting eliminated in the first leg.

THR: Chuck and Wynona were eliminated because they failed to follow the clue properly and rolled the cheese down the hill instead of transporting it on the sled. In this last episode, I half expected Bates and Anthony to get some sort of penalty for carrying the whiskey barrels instead of rolling them in the last leg. What was the difference this time?
Keoghan:  While the challenge was called “Whiskey Rollin,” the clue simply told them to transport the barrels under their own power -- meaning they could have balanced them on their heads if they wanted to … so they didn’t break any rules.

THR: Dave and Connor were extremely impressive, winning legs even with Dave's injury. How hard is it for you to see a strong team like forced to drop out?
Keoghan: It was one of the toughest moments in this Race for me. I loved those guys particularly because of the father/son relationship, which reminds me so much of my dad. They played the game the way you should play it, and despite being dealt an unfortunate injury, they competed to the very end, snagging two first-place finishes and quickly established themselves as one of our favorite teams in such a short amount of time. I always knew they would be tough competitors knowing what they’ve been through with cancer and also because they both participate in the toughest sport on earth -- cycling. I would have loved to see how far they could have gone if they could have stuck it out.

THR: What was your reaction to John and Jessica being eliminated with an express pass?
Keoghan: Oy vey.

'The Amazing Race' Finale Preview: Host Phil Keoghan Calls the Hockey Players 'Giddy Schoolgirls'

As the 22nd edition of "The Amazing Race" arrives at its last leg this Sunday, we caught up with the show's globetrotting host, Phil Keoghan, to get his thoughts on the remaining four teams. His boldest prediction: The country singers and the hockey guys will drop out of the race and run off together.

"It's ridiculous," Keoghan tells us. "The guys turn into schoolgirls. They get all giddy and loopy. Here they are, competitive hockey players who can get in the water with crocodiles, but they get around these girls and they act like five-year-old boys afraid to kiss little girls. They want nothing more than to be serenaded by them! It's ridiculous. They should be focused on the finish line, not on finding a date."

So, should Bates and Anthony be more like the derby moms? Keoghan laughs, "Have you seen roller derby? It's intense. Mona has hip-checked me a couple of times -- in good fun. I did feel like the roller derby moms would do well and make it to the end of the race. They're used to competing just like the hockey players. On Sunday, you are going to see real determination and focus. They're hungry. They're out there for their kids. They've been hanging on by a thread, but you don't want to count them out."

Even more impressive, reveals the host, are newlyweds Max and Katie. He calls them the MVPs of the race and also cites them as the most improved team this season. At the beginning, he didn't think the couple would last because "she wasn't outspoken and he wasn't realizing what she was capable of doing. Their primary mistake [was] not listening to each other." And now Keoghan thinks "they've lasted because Max had a shift in his attitude. They're in sync now."

In any case, it sounds like there won't be a clear-cut winner at the start of Sunday's finale. Keoghan reminds us that "The Amazing Race" is nothing like the Kentucky Derby: We can't pick the winners or know the odds.

"In two different seasons, I laid money down on my predictions and both times I lost," he confesses. "This year, I saw the country girls going within the first two episodes. I didn't see their competitive edge. I was wrong. They have the flirtatious quality. I don't know if you call it a quality, but they know how to get attention, how to use their looks to their advantage. And why not?"

He assures us that we will be "guessing right until the end. As always, we have something of a stumbling block, which helps to facilitate an unpredictable finish."

The stumbling block he refers to will be a mental obstacle, explaining, "At the end of the race, when you're tired, hungry, anxious, not thinking straight, sleep-deprived, and you're hunting for the same thing as your opponents, mental pressure is much more interesting than physical pressure."
