The TAR 22 START LINE LOCATION IS:

Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Griffith_Observatory

From the GO home page (http://www.griffithobservatory.org/general.html):

"Griffith Observatory is an icon of Los Angeles, a national leader in public astronomy, a beloved civic gathering place, and one of southern California's most popular attractions. The Observatory is located on the southern slope of Mount Hollywood in Griffith Park, just above the Los Feliz neighborhood. It is 1,134 feet above sea level and is visible from many parts of the Los Angeles basin.

The mission of Griffith Observatory is inspiring everyone to observe, ponder, and understand the sky."

Yay for a brand new country!

Very close to my wishlist location of Fiji. Maybe they hop over next? A likely next leg might be NZ. I see they have direct flights to Auckland.  Then the Philippines can be next hehe.

Just a general warning:

ANYONE found to be posting FALSE SPOILERS here, joke or not, is at SERIOUS risk of being banned. Take notice.

I would strongly suggest deleting anything not able to be proved.

Actually French Polynesia is a overseas country of France, meaning they are kind of like a sovereign state with their own president and laws.

Witnessed the first 4-5 teams arrive in CHCH at 7pm Sunday night (18/11/12) despite searching for clues within Christchurch found nothing, would guess they drove somewhere in the Canterbury Region. Not much left in Christchurch post earthquake except roadworks.

Slowhatch,
Somehow I have gotten through life so far and many Scrabble games without knowing that the word "demonym" existed. For those who like me did not know, its definition is "name given to people of a place." An example is "American."

Thanks to Ovalorange's Hanoi sightings...  :hoot:

I can now confirmed the Location of one of the task that appeared in that picture :

Took place at the Temple of Literature in Hanoi,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temple_of_Literature,_Hanoi

the big metal dragon bowl statue and the swan-cut bonsai tree gave away the clue for the location :

and highlight of the task is :

Human chess (“cờ người”), which is the favorite one to a large number of Vietnam people.

Quote
Human chess is a variant of chess, often played by people who take on the roles of the various chess pieces (king, knight, bishop and so on). This is typically done on an outdoor field, with the squares of the board marked out on the grass. A move resulting in a piece being taken from the board will cause a choreographed fight to be played out to determine whether the piece is actually taken.

Human chess played in Vietnam follows the general rules of Chinese chess. The concept is recognizably similar to Western chess, but with a different-sized board and different pieces, including cannons and guards, each of them marked with a distinct Chinese character. In the game, there are 32 people in all. One side consists of 16 boys and the other of 16 girls. Each team wears a different colour.

The chessboard is marked by paint on flat ground. Village festivals usually use the yard in front of a communal house or pagoda or a nearby field. Organisers select players plus a referee well in advance. All should be children of families with a good reputation. The referee and the two generals should come from wealthier families so they can treat their players to food. As the selection finishes, the referee convenes the 32 people, describes the costumes, and tells each person how to move as a chess piece. Players may sit on chairs and wear hats if it is sunny. They either wear boards with the Chinese names of their pieces or carry sign poles with the characters. The generals wear traditional costumes. The two contestants who direct the pieces have their own seats outside the board.

The atmosphere often become bustling with the human chess competition. In the early morning, many people gather and wait for the competition. There is often three drum-rolls signaling the start of the game. Two players in Vietnamese traditional dresses appeared, sitting on two high platforms behind chessmen. The first player starts the game by shouting and a chessman left the position to perform martial arts techniques before reaching another position on the chessboard. The second player’s turn, he also shouts and his chessman moves and performs beautiful skills of martial arts. They in turn play the game. If one of them lost his chessmen, these have to leave the chessboard. The spectators triumphantly cheer whenever there is a nice performance, making chessmen try their best to show their skills. After nearly two hours, the human chess competition finishes. However, the spectators often do not want to go home, they would like the organising board to continue the game.

Strange! Looks like human chess, but the words are actually animals of the Chinese/Vietnamese zodiac! I see "rabbit", "ox", and "horse"...

There's no chess "board" for them to play on, either. Probably just a find-the-correct-order task?

Because there seems to be some confusion, let me clarify.

The CONFIRMED locations for the TAR 22 Finale are:

Dulles Airport (flight determined by Chateau); photo confirmation by StephenWasHere
DC area (Chateau)
First ID of Area's covering the next 4 locations : (TAR detective team of slowhatch, caper, Plaidmoon, and walkingpneumonia)
First sighting confirmations:
Old Post Office Pavilion (whammo)
Tidal Basin (stroche)
possible MLK task or lost team? (whammo)
National Park Stadium (ID'd by Chateau and peach, photo confirmation by stroche)
Mount Vernon (pitstop) walkingpneumonia

In accordance with RFF's policies re not revealing locations before the racers arrive safely at a place, some of these locations could not be pre-revealed publicly, but your Detectives teams were hard at work on them!

Looks like this will be a wonderful Finale Leg, many thanks to the whole group who spent days on this!

The national Martin Luther King, Jr., Memorial is located adjacent to the northwest corner of the Tidal Basin, and fairly close to the Lincoln Memorial. Independence Avenue connects the two locations, and the Korean War Memorial is in between the other two.
Ohio Drive runs along the Potomac down to the area of the Jefferson Memorial. That's one way to get to the area adjacent to the 14th Street Bridge (and U.S> Highway 1) and headed towards the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. The other way is to go down Independence Avenue away from the Lincoln Memorial and the MLK Memorial, which would end up at 14th Street three buildings north of the maze of roads that are at the north end of the 14th Street Bridge and the Bureau of Engraving is the southernmost of three buildings at that confluence. Maybe we can get more clarity in reference to the map?
http://www.nps.gov/nama/planyourvisit/upload/NACCmap1.pdf (http://www.nps.gov/nama/planyourvisit/upload/NACCmap1.pdf)

My guess is that teams were sent to the vicinity of the MLK Memorial (which only opened in 2011) for a clue or as part of a task.

The Lincoln Memorial is fairly close to the area used around the Tidal Basin and may well be visible in the background. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is in that area too but built into the ground as it is, it may not be visible. I initially thought that was where they were going.

I don't think the Lincoln Memorial was involved because it is always very busy with visitors and I doubt if TAR could have been there without multiple sightings being reported. As theschnauzers pointed out, the Jefferson and Martin Luther King Jr. Memorials are right in that area and may be involved in the task. In my visits to that area, they don't have the foot traffic that the Lincoln Memorial does.

Had one hour in Berlin and decided to check out Joachimstaler Platz. Nothing to report; the store owner at the corner definitely saw something and is definitely under gag orders, his response to "Did you see filming?" was a very non-committal "Maybe". Even buying stupid kitschy souvenirs from him didn't help.

But we CANNOT assume the plaza was the Pit Stop, because... the "mat" is just... a metal grill.

Teams flew to Tahiti first then on to Bora Bora. + The chain had 2 legs so it is not out of the realm of possibility.  :)

I don't know if you didn't see Chateu's post but he matched it to Bora Bora :)
