Title: TAR 21 Ratings thread
Post by: theschnauzers on October 01, 2012, 02:05:59 PM
Deadline.com's description of the CBS overnights:

Quote
CBS’ Sunday lineup was down double-digits year-to-year across the board. 60 Minutes, featuring an interview with Arnold Schwarzenegger, did a 1.8/5 in 18-49, down 22% from last year’s season premiere. The Amazing Race (2.5/6), which just earned another best reality competition series Emmy, was down 17% for its lowest-rated premiere ever. Also logging their lowest-rated openers ever were The Good Wife (1.8/4, down 18% from last September) and The Mentalist (2.1/5, down 25% from its premiere on Thursday last fall) in its new Sunday time slot.

We'll see what CBS says tomorrow when the final weekly ratings are released.

Ouch. Once Upon A Time was killing TAR last night

I think TAR needs a new timeslot.

Things are a lot more complicated than direct comparsions to other shows.

Deadline.com reported that of the first three nights of "Premiere Week" for CBS, shows aired Monday to Wednesday generally had picked up an additional 25% plus when time shifted viewing within three days are added in; the article suggested that DVR time-shifting has now exceeded 25% for all viewing, and as a result, the live numbers are just about meaningless for ratings purposes.

As I said before, we'll see what CBS has for the final for the week ending Sunday night tomorrow (Tuesday), but we may be needing to find reports of live plus 7 for a more accurate picture.

Also I heard that Neilsen announced this weekend the start of a new service to measure viewing of shows online, after months of testing. Such information can only help TAR, which provides viewing through CBS.com and Hulu, and allows you to buy episodes or the season for download through I-Tunes.

It's becoming a whole new world out there.

CBS made a big point about waiting for the live plus three days numbers; and TAR still came close to 10 million. If the 25% or more watching timeshifted within three days applies to TAR, then that will produce a result of over 12 million. We'll have to wait and see what numbers come out. TAR's weekly numbers are going to be at a disadvantage because of this quirk in how the initial live ratings are reported to the networks and the advertisers.

That's close to the numbers we saw last year; it goes to show how much of the audience is time-shifting.

We should expect that the live plus three numbers to be about the same as last week or a little higher, but that will bear watching this week to see if that expectation is on target.

One thing we're not getting is how many people are now viewing the episode on CBS.com or on Hulu, or via I-Tunes download; I suspect that the audience has not shrunk in the past few season, but that an increasing share of the audience is using new or time shifted media to watch the episodes.

Or watching it using some of the "unofficial" webpages where the episodes are posted every week, couple hours later TAR ends.

While the demo change is .6, that's just about a quarter of the 18-49 viewers who watched on a time - shifted basis; and it wouldn't be unreasonable to think that the same proportion applies to the total audience as well. (So, instead of 9.6 million, we might have had an additional 2.4 million, that would total 12 million.)

It's also interesting to note that the TAR premiere was equal to The Mentalizt in the demo group for CBS Sunday night lineup that weekend, well ahead of 60 Minutes and The Good Wife.

I'm keeping my eye out for anything further on the live plus seven front, but these numbers from top to bottom do strongly suggest confirmation that the time shifting has really picked up over the past couple of years.

Sounds like the preliminary overnight numbers are flat from last week (and the week before0, but as Deadline.com (TVLand.com) is reporting there were a number of markets that had a 22 minute overrun, and the numbers are not adjusted. Given how low the 60 Minutes and The Good Wife numbers might have been, that suggests that either way the overlaps may have pulled TAR down a tad in the overnights. We'll have to wait and see when the finals come out tomorrow.

All we know officially from CBS is that TAR made the top 30 in live plus same day numbers for the week:

Title: Re: TAR 21 Ratings thread

RacerUntilWeDie, the real problem is the vastly increasing number of viewers opting for time shifted and alternate media viewing. Except for live sports programming in prime time, every single broadcast network program in prime time is having the same pattern developing, the main difference being the proportion of viewing that time shift for each show, especially in the demographics pf 18-49 and 25-56.
We're also dealing with the rapid increase of cable viewership as a percentage of the whole number viewing at any one time.
And I'm having to time shift shows myself, although I record TAR anyhow, I'm recording other shows that night, and on some time I am literally recording 6 hours of prime time, and catching or recording repeat airing of one or two cable shows because of the programming overlaps. It's getting to be ridiculous!

THE AMAZING RACE 21 (8:56-9:56 PM) was second in households (6.0/09), viewers (9.54m) and adults 25-54 (3.5/07), and averaged 2.0/06 in adults 18-49.  Compared to last week, THE AMAZING RACE was up +9% in households (from 5.5/08), +3% in adults 25-54 (from 3.4/08), was even in adults 18-49 and added +430,000 viewers (from 9.11m, +5%).

One thing to add to Peach's post:

Quote
CBS top programs of the week:  #2 60 MINUTES (an average of 15.86m viewers), #3 THE BIG BANG THEORY (15.73m), #4 PERSON OF INTEREST (13.93m), #6 TWO AND A HALF MEN (13.60m), #12 CRIMINAL MINDS (11.81m), #15 ELEMENTARY (10.91m), #16 CSI: CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION (10.63m), #17 SURVIVOR: PHILIPPINES (10.43m), #18 BLUE BLOODS (10.29m), #19 THE GOOD WIFE (10.02m), #22 THE AMAZING RACE 21 (9.54m), #25 CSI: NY (9.48m), #26 2 BROKE GIRLS (9.30m), #27 MIKE & MOLLY (9.10m) and #29 HAWAII FIVE-0 (8.70m).
There was financial and business news coverage yesterday from industry analysts about the drop in the raw weekly figures for the broadcast nets across the board, which I take to mean, they're now figuring out that even the same day plus three numbers are proving inadequate to prove viewership.

The problem with the Tuesday weekly numbers are that they're just the live plus same day viewing, and they're not even the numbers advertisers are using now. So we'll have to wait and see if anyone in the media gets the more important live plus three days, or live plus seven day numbers.

Given that the hybrid storm Sandy is headed towards the east coast, and the fact that watches and warnings were issued for the east coast from North Carolina to Maine, and well inland (Ohio, Indiana, and the southern Appalachians), in addition to the last game of the World Series plus NFL football), TAR's ratings may end up taking a hit.
The only mention I've seen so far about the overnights was that TAR's total audience was down 8 percent from last week (but still over 9 million), however, it is possible the weekly live plus same day numbers may not be available tomorrow.

Because it deals with ratings, I'm posting a link and the quoted article from Deadline.com on Les Moonves (chairman of CBS) on the question of what ratings investors and advertisers should be looking at; he's in favor of ignoring overnight ratings and favors using the Live plus 7 data and including all mobile device views in the numbers:

http://www.deadline.com/2012/11/les-moonves-cbs-overnight-ratings/ (http://www.deadline.com/2012/11/les-moonves-cbs-overnight-ratings/)
Quote
Les Moonves Urges Industry Watchers To “Stop Looking At Overnight Ratings”
By DAVID LIEBERMAN, Executive Editor
Add the CBS chief to the gaggle of broadcast network execs who say that their soft early-season ratings mostly reflect changes in viewing habits — not dissatisfaction with their shows. “DVR usage has been growing, and streaming is pretty new, as is VOD,” Les Moonves told analysts in a call to discuss CBS Corp’s Q3 earnings. CBS shares are down about 10% since the fall season began, in part because investors are concerned about the ratings. (CBS is -17.6% in primetime among 18- to 49-year-olds for the first six weeks.) Things should improve, Moonves says, as Nielsen begins to count the growing number of viewers who watch shows on digital gadgets including smartphones and tablets. And he hopes to fold in many DVR users who record shows and watch them several days later. While the current system counts people who watch ads up to three days after a program airs, “we’re pushing to get it seven days, and we think it will happen in a short time.” With all of the changes, “people have to stop looking at overnight ratings. It’s a different ballgame.” Yet he remains characteristically upbeat that CBS will improve soon. At the beginning of the season many viewers like to sample new shows on other networks, but then return to their familiar favorites. “This past week we had our highest rated week ever,” Moonves says. Advertisers “realize by the end of the year we’re going to be fine” — and CBS won’t have to offer them make-good ads to compensate for ratings shortfalls.

Here's what the CBS press release for the weekly ratings had to say about this past Sunday's episode compared to last week's (which weren't posted here, so it gives us more information about last Sunday as well:
Quote
THE AMAZING RACE 21 (8:34-9:34 PM) was second in households (6.3/09) and viewers (10.20m), tied for second in adults 25-54 (3.6/07, with ABC) and averaged 2.6/06 in 18-49. Compared to last week, THE AMAZING RACE 21 was up +13% in households (from 5.6/08), +3% in adults 25-54 (from 3.5/07), +4% in adults 18-49 (from 2.5/06) and +790,000 viewers (from 9.41m, +8%).

So for the episode aired 10/28, Households were 5.6/08, adults 25-54 3.5/07, adults 18-49 (2.5/06) and 9.41 million viewers.
For this week, the episode aired 11/4, Households were 6.3/09, adults 25-54 3.6/07, adults 18-49 2.6/06; and 10.20 million viewers. And the show placed in the top 25 for the week:

Quote
CBS top programs of the week:  #2 NCIS (B) (an average of 18.83m viewers), #3 60 MINUTES (16.30m), #4 NCIS: LOS ANGELES (B) (16.28m), #5 THE BIG BANG THEORY (B) (15.90m), #9 PERSON OF INTEREST (B) (13.60m), #10 TWO AND A HALF MEN (B) (12.65m), #14 CRIMINAL MINDS (B) (11.99m), #16 HOME DEPOT PRIME COLLEGE FOOTBALL "Alabama Crimson Tide at LSU Tigers" (S) (11.35m), #17 BLUE BLOOD (B) (11.05m), #18 CSI: CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION (B) (10.91m), #20 VEGAS (B) (10.75m), #22 ELEMENTARY (B) (10.49m), #23 THE AMAZING RACE 21 (10.20m), #25 CSI: NY (B) (10.05m), #26 THE GOOD WIFE (9.93m), #27 SURVIVOR: PHILIPPINES (B) (9.83m) and #29 THE MENTALIST (9.11m).

CBS did not put out a press release last week so there's no information beyond that extracted from this week about last week's episode.

No, I'm not repeating the above post, it's just that this week, like last week, all CBS has in its weekly live plus same day weekly ratings report for November 18th is TAR's top 30 ranking and total audience:
http://www.cbspressexpress.com/cbs-entertainment/releases/view?id=33708 (http://www.cbspressexpress.com/cbs-entertainment/releases/view?id=33708)

#23 AMAZING RACE 21 (9.591m),

At least that part of the audience is up by over 500,000 from last week.

Ratings: 'Amazing Race' Finale Slides as NBC Wins With Football

Dec 10 (TheWrap.com) - The season finale of CBS's "The Amazing Race" slid 21 percent from last year's send-off to tie the show's previous low for a finale, while NBC took an expected win on the strength of "Sunday Night Football," according to preliminary numbers.

While NBC's numbers are approximate due to the nature of live sports, the network holds a commanding first place in the 18-49 demographic most important to advertisers with a 5.7 rating/14 share and in total viewers with 15.9 million total viewers. Following three consecutive episodes of "Football Night in America" from 7 to 8:30 p.m., which drew a 2.3/6, 3.3/9 and 5.4/13, the game between Green Bay and Detroit inched up from last week's "Sunday Night Football" at 8:30, posting a 6.9/17 and 18.9 million total viewers. It was by far the night's best-rated and program and most-watched overall.

Fox drew second place in ratings and third in total viewers with a 3.5/9 and 8.5 million. NFL overrun from 7 to 7:30 had a 6.1/17 with 17.3 million total viewers, while overrun combined with "The O.T" at 7:30 had a 4.3/11 with 11.6 million total viewers. "The Simpsons at 8 inched up from its last original airing two weeks ago for a 3.4/9 and had 7.5 million total viewers. "Bob's Burgers" at 8:30 jumped 17 percent to a 2.1/5 and took 4.6 million total viewers, while "Family Guy" at 9 had a 2.8/7 with 5.6 million total viewers. "American Dad" at 9:30 drew a 2.2/5 with 4.7 million total viewers.

CBS came in third in ratings and second in total viewers with a 2.2/5 and 9.6 million. "60 Minutes" at 7 posted a 19/5 with 11.8 million total viewers, while the "Amazing Race" season finale the following hour dropped to a 2.6/6 with 9.3 million total viewers. "The Mentalist" at 10 dropped 11 percent from its last original two weeks ago for a 1.6/4 and had 7.9 million total viewers.

ABC came in fourth in ratings and total viewers with a 1.6/4 and 6.8 million. "America's Funniest Home Videos" at 7 slid 13 percent for a 1.4/4 with 6.5 million total viewers. The special "Disney's Prep & Landing" the following hour had a 1.4/3, a 27 percent increase over last year's special, and had 4.9 million total viewers. "Disney's Prep & Landing 2: Naughty vs. Nice" at 8:30 also drew a 1.4/3 and took 4.8 million total viewers, while the movie "Christmas With Holly" at 9 took a 1.8/4 with 7.7 million total viewers.

Amazing Race shocker finale ratings disappoint

CBS’ Amazing Race delivered a surprising finale last night when the underdog Beekmans came from behind to win the million. But the show’s ratings? Those were a bit more predictable, unfortunately.
The two-hour Race closer had 9.3 million viewers and a 2.6 rating in the adult demo, down 21 percent and ranking and tied as the show’s lowest-rated finale ever.
The strong lead-in didn’t help The Mentalist, which was down 11 percent from its last original.

CBS
7-8P   60 MINUTES              #12   1.9   11,766
8-10P   AMAZING RACE      #8   2.6   9,337
10-11P   MENTALIST      #14   1.6   7,891

Among non-sports programming, The Simpsons won Sunday night thanks to a strong football lead-in.

Primetime Ratings: 'Amazing Race' Finale Ties Low

CBS' two-hour fall finale of The Amazing Race drew a 2.6 rating with adults 18-49, according to Nielsen overnight numbers. That was down a tenth from last week and off by 21% from last year's fall finale to tie as the show lowest-rated finale ever. The Mentalist was also down 11% from two weeks ago to a 1.6. CBS finished in third with a 2.2 rating/5 share.

Fox was in second with an NFL-inflated 3.5/9. The Simpsons was up 3% to a 3.4 and Bob's Burgers improved 17% to a 2.1. Family Guy was down a tenth to a 2.8 and American Dad rose 5% to a 2.2.

NBC won again with a 5.7/14 for its NFL coverage. The Detroit Lions-Green Bay Packers game was up 5% in the fast-nationals with a 6.9. Football Night in America was up 12% to a 3.7.

ABC finished in fourth with a 1.6/4. The Hallmark Hall of Fame movie Christmas With Holly drew a 1.8 rating and 7.68 million total viewers, both network highs for the movie franchise.

Green Bay Packers vs. the 'Amazing' 'gay guys'

"The Amazing Race" victory by a former Oconomowoc resident, Josh Kilmer-Purcell, and his partner, known as the Beekman Boys,  put the amazing in the show's title Sunday night.

Kilmer-Purcell and his partner, Brent Ridge, won the $1 million competition in which multiple teams of two race around the world completing arduous tasks.

They were dismissed as the weakest team by other contestants - who called them "the gay guys" - until the final task, which required contestants apply brain instead of brawn.

They beat out two likable young sweethearts and two cocky Chippendale dancers. The surprise result was a bit like the nerds beating the popular kids in high school.

The two-hour episode itself, however, was cursed.

It aired opposite the Green Bay Packers game against the Detroit Lions on NBC, and its start was delayed because of a "60 Minutes" overrun. Both contributed to the show's 21% drop in ratings from last year's finale, which, coincidentally, was won by a Madison couple.

According to The Wrap.com, the finale earned a 2.6 rating and drew 9.3 million viewers.

The Packers game, on the other hand, dominated the night - as expected. NBC's "Sunday Night Football" telecast averaged 15.9 million viewers, peaking at more than 20 million at the start of the game nationally. About a half-million of them live in the Milwaukee area.

The game averaged a 52.7 rating on WTMJ-TV (Channel 4), or the equivalent of 479,000 television households. A local rating point represents 9,100 homes. The game's rating peaked at 55.5 - or 505,050 households - at 9 p.m.

"The Amazing Race" averaged a 4.6 on WDJT-TV (Channel 58), or 41,860 TV households, but some people may have recorded it on their DVR while watching the game.

I know people are gonna tell me I am wrong, but I think the fact that the twinnies were saved by a NEL was the main reason the ratings dropped.

I doubt that. It was the football game that dropped viewers. The sisters made this season entertaining

I know that, but the twinnies got MAJOR hate on facebook. Now that I think about it, it was probably a combo of football + twinnies. By the way, the Chippendales made this seaosn entertaining.

As I've tried to point out all season, the ratings system relying on live plus same day viewing does not fully measure audiences any longer. The networks, especially Les Moonves at CBS, and the advertisers both know it.
I want to wait to see the final weekly report tomorrow to see if it sheds any further light on this, especially since live plus three day and live plus seven day numbers aren't included.

Everything I've seen though suggests that by seven days out, the audience numbers are at a minimum stable, if not improving at little over time. I just wish there was actual numbers out there to show this.

No offence but the people hating on the twins on facebook are the ones that are hypocritical and turn around and then call the girls names. Its crazy. Yes the Chippendales helped make the season but the Twins were definitely the stand out team. Every episode they made me laugh for ex.

I usually hate it when fans threat to not watch the show on facebook, many times hypocritical as you said, but at least for the twiinies, they had a reason. No one ever was in a "stealing" incident before, so its not being hypocritical.

'Amazing Race' Finale Delivers Not-so-Amazing Ratings

The two-hour season finale of CBS reality franchise “The Amazing Race” stumbled at the finish line Sunday night, delivering a number that tied the program’s lowest-rated finale ever, based on Nielsen overnight results.

TVbytheNumbers.com reports that “Race” dipped to a 2.6 average rating in the key 18-49 demo, down a whopping 31% from the finale for the fall season a year ago, and down 4% from the show’s performance a week earlier.

Other programming on CBS Sunday night was also down: “60 Minutes” plunged 42% from a football-delayed episode a week ago to a 1.9 average in 18-49, while “The Mentalist” slipped 11% from its most recent fresh episode to a 1.6.

Meanwhile, NFL football was up, enabling NBC to coast to an easy win for the night. “Sunday Night Football” delivered a 6.9 average rating in the 18-49 demo, up from a 6.6 a week ago.

The report notes that live football broadcasts mean the numbers will be subject to more than the usual adjustments.

For prime time overall, NBC came in with a preliminary 5.7 average in viewers 18-49, ahead of Fox (3.5 average), CBS (2.2) and ABC (1.6). NBC also had a big win in total viewers, averaging 15.9 million to 9.6 million for CBS, 8.5 million for Fox and 6.7 million for ABC.
