Title: TAR 21 or 22 Suggestions
Post by: redskevin88 on May 16, 2012, 03:25:32 AM
If you were the TAR producers, what would you change and/or improve for TAR 21 and TAR 22? Just curious.

The Visit-every-country-twice-in-a-season thing. I want more countries, space them out, I don't like the flight bunching.

They can't really control flight bunching. For example, I don't think there are that many flights between Munich and Baku, and its logical for all teams to take the earliest flight. Also sometimes, to remote places, they are not many logical flights.

TAR20 was a HUGE improvement from TAR19! But there is always room for improvement

TAR19 had THREE two-legs-in-one-country (Indonesia, Thailand, Malawi), Denmark and Belgium each got one-and-a-half legs.
Basically, TAR19 spent way too much time in very few countries, however I will count out Leg 5 (Thailand) as we suspect it was a last minute planned leg.

TAR20 had THREE two-legs-in-one-country (Argentina, Tanzania, India), which were all previously visited countries. But other than those 3 countries, they managed to visit 5 other countries (2 of those first visits), which was a breath of fresh air  :wohoo:

If WRP want to make the best route possible for TAR21/TAR22, I think they should follow the same route of TAR17, i.e.
- TWO two-legs-in-one-country
- diverse locations
- at least 4 continents
- new locations

Make more fun & tougher fast forwards. 4 or 5 FFs. This would give opportunity to other teams to be first place. And provide different placements. So there'll be no more boring first place dominations like seasons 20, 19, 15, 13, etc.

Tougher roadblocks. More polarizing or deceiving detours. Create motivations for the teams to use the u-turn. Like saying the first 3 teams to finish the leg will receive cash prizes.

Let's see:

-Start somewhere else than California
-Leave India and China out of the race (for one or two seasons)
-At least two or three new countries
-Have 2 legs in these new countries (cause it got me thinking: why do they had two legs in India and only one in Paraguay and Azerbaijan considering that these were first time visits?)
-Have a leg with an Intersection
-Visit countries that haven't been visited in a looooong time or only been visited once before.
-3 Fast Forward and try to add one more to catch teams off-guard.
-End somewhere else than California

- Revert back to Pre-HD TAR editing, where Phil's voice is deep. Starting TAR 19, he started to almost yell and extend his arms like Allan Wu. :|
- Put epic music. Pre-HD TAR has a ton of exciting music, compared to now. I compared the past 12 finale introductions, and I found the S19 and S20 to be less exciting.
- Avoid the sunlight transition. ANNOYING.

It almost came to pass in season 11 (TARAS) and there were those who thought it might happen after teams were sent to Ursala, Argentina, but a leg or two in Antarctica would be an interesting change of pace. (And there are scheduled charter flights available to islands off of the Anarctic mainland coast, there were when TAR 11 was filmed, and no one would see it coming. (And TAR has since made it to the Arctic Circle in Norway and Sweden,) so it would make sense to try for it.)

Slow down, and bring back the old style of the Amazing Race. For ex, when introducing the detour/roadblock show the envelope like older seasons!

They stopped doing that because they thought that people would already know what was the deal with Roadblocks and Detours.
But i agree with the way Phil narrates the legs and tasks. He sounds so..enthusiastic? And before he was more stoic.

Yep, he really do sound enthusiastic.... which I don't kinda like. I don't know, but I don't feel the thrill by this narration. I like the kinda mysterious and coolly and deep

I agree on this and staying in a place makes them lazy as well I think as they sometimes cram less into the individual legs when they stay somewhere.

Having watched every season of TAR, I would like it if they went back to the earlier seasons..
- 13 Legs
- As already suggested, pre HD voiceovers
- Slow it down!!!!!! - The first few seasons were so good because it wasn't intense 100% of the time, and therefore the intense moments were highlighted!

A few other things
- More night-time legs - The last episode that I can remember having a decent proportion at night was in TAR 18, in Austria..., This was an awesome leg, and I think having it at night makes it more intense. ... So more night legs! (Out of curiosity, am I the only one who likes night legs??)
-NO MORE RECRUITED TEAMS FROM OTHER REALITY SHOWS - THEY HAVE HAD THERE TURN.
- Make the detours and roadblocks more intense - I hate it how the tasks have become so easy! There are so many challenges that you cant not complete, such as the 'helicopter rescue' roadblock in TAR 20. There have been some ripping tasks that require thinking/skill (FRANZ, Measuring Liechtenstein, Haybales, Making a Dinosaur) but there are not enough.
- Get rid of all the technology!

I loved TAR 18 so much because it had so much of the above (Night legs, slow pace, hard challenges), and although seeing old teams wasn't everyones forte (I loved it!), i think that season 18 has to be the benchmark for challenges and editing.

Thoughts?

Here's two ideas for additional elements to the game.

One-Way/Road Closed: A team may choose to select the detour for another team. Teams may not switch to the other detour if this is assigned to them. (Pay attention to what the other teams weaknesses are)

No Passing Zone: (Associated with a non roadblock/detour task) Teams must await the team that arrived at the task ahead of them to complete the task before proceeding with the next part of the race even if they have completed the task.

I agree with more night legs!
I don't care about the speed bump technology but I do like the standard peeling on the picture an the Courtesy of Photo.
I think there needs to be more travel drama and the more standardized 12 hour pit stops.

think more about leg architecture

TAR20 Leg 3 was ABSOLUTELY flawless (IMO)

even if there wasn't flight drama, it was still a great leg

new location: Paraguay
a very hard detour
and a hard enough RB  so teams had to opportunity to catch up after the detour
and on foot to the pit stop

when they actually put the teams in this leg, it was AWESOME
teams had to make difficult decisions, and teams made exciting comebacks
it is probably my fave episode of all time

so basically, more legs like this!!!! harder challenges, but still do-able enough so teams have the opportunity to catch up

PLEASE please get rid of the classic extremely-boring second leg. I know producers have to cut down tasks in order to make room for so many teams at that stage of the race, but a better leg planning could be possible (by short-but-extreme tasks, no airport drama at that particular episode, etc)

And please... EASTER ISLANDS. Is not that hard to get there.

Since The Amazing Race 21 is under the way now. Here is my suggestions for 22.

1. three to four new countries.
2. 12 teams.
3. The Salvage Pass.
4. Night legs in cities like Rome, Paris or London.

I've just watched TAR Australia 2. I enjoyed it FAR better than ANY leg from TAR 18-20. Here's the reasons why I think I enjoyed TAR Australia 2, which TAR America should emulate/bring back

1. The teams. I think Australians are more unique... or does the Americans cast the wrong people? Nonetheless, I think TAR Australia has an excellent cast and no one is the same with the other. Every single person in the cast delivers (except Shane and Andrew LOL) and every single one of them is promising. TAR America should put up teams that are entertaining on their own, and not rely on inter-team interaction/drama (which got overkill in TAR20). TAR America should bring more colorful teams, ROOTABLE teams (villains are rootable too, but never ever cast Art and JJ likes again)

2. The intro. I liked how Amazing Race classic music was injected in every scene. I liked how the editing put up an exciting and mysterious and omg-I-am-part-of-the-race feeling. After watching the first 10 minutes of TAR Australia 2, I think I never had this thrill compared to the last THREE seasons of TAR. The intro is a big deal, because it tones up the rest of the season.

3. The host's narration. Well, Phil Keoghan is unbeatable, but Phil's voice in narration and description and voice overs nowadays are seriously annoying. I love Phil, but hey, stop being enthusiastic. Grant Bowler, on the other hand, sticks with the more 'cool and slow but mysterious and exciting' narration voice, which gives me the chills and thrills. The way he described the first task was epic, which adds another element of excitement.

But I know Phil Keoghan is unbeatable. Phil, please bring back the "epic and cool and slow but mysterious and exciting" narration, which you did best during pre-HD TAR Seasons (I think he did it best in TAR 17). And also, please narrate all the tasks. Some tasks/destinations in TAR20 did not have an any voice over whatsoever, which is kinda boring and not memorable.

4. The music and editing. WHERE DID THE EDITING TEAM OF TAR 17 GO?!? Did they all resign?!? I think TAR Australia did an amazing job in editing music. Music is everything. I'd rather have Amazing Race music injected at every scene than a kroo-kroo-zzzzz-boring music which are evident in TAR20.

5. The tasks and the legs. IT SHOULD BE LONG. IT SHOULD BE HARD. It should present the chance of shuffling positions. Though, TAR America has done an excellent job with the legs already.

There. This is just my opinion. I am really sad that TAR 19 and 20 has not give me an impact like TARAus 2 (even with its first episode!).

Gotta agree with the above. Living in Australia I was really excited when TARAus was announced, but I was adamant that I would remain loyal to TAR. The original version. But unfortunately, TARAus was spectacular, with good teams, night challenges, awesome/obscure destinations! TARAus is 10 times better because of all of this.

However, the big difference is the length of episodes. In TARAus, 5 or 6 legs were 90 minutes - This allowed for it to be slow paced, like the old TAR, and showcased the countries they were in more. TAR should be a 90 minute show, and the american version needs to make 90 minute episodes!

As a TAR enthusiast, I hope the american one gets better until it overtakes TARAus, but seeing the boring destinations, teams and fast paced eps are likely to continue, I doubt it

Heres a twist i would like to see.

For next season the starting line should be near 2 airports which are equaliy as close to the start line(we will say Central park in NYC and the airports are JFK and Newark)

Teams are told that a flight departs at both airports to their first destination and both flights have a max of 8 teams on a flight but not told which flight departs or arrives first.

Not a bad idea, but 8 would probably be too many on a flight, no drama from teams having to switch.  Also, in this day of cell phones, they'd likely call both to find out times.  On top of that, you'd have to allow enough time for teams to get to one airport, find out it's full, get lost on the way to the other airport and still make the flight.  To prevent calls, you'd have to have a clue that read something like "Drive yourself to JFK or Newark Liberty Airport and search for the yellow and red route marker to find your flight.  Warning: no more than 6 teams per flight."  Since LaGuardia is also very close by, could make it no more than 4 or 5 teams per plane on 3 flights that way.

Grant Bowler is absolutely boring. He has the personality of cardboard. (He might be a nice and funny guy, actually. But I'm just saying what I see from the show.)

I agree about not being too enthusiastic. Phil has been able to bring measure of uncertainty to the upcoming tasks. But Bowler seems to take things to the extreme--being too cool, measured, and slow.

Sorry, I hit the snooze button.
Title: Re: TAR 21 or 22 Suggestions
Post by: balfour on June 06, 2012, 02:08:54 PM
I think I was being too hard on Grant Bowler. He seems to have made a massive improvement for season two. As for Phil, I never noticed the change in his recent narration until it was pointed out here. I went to youtube to check and wow what a difference. I prefer when he was a little more mysterious instead of sounding absolutely excited about everything.

I don't really miss the Eat Sleep Mingle.
But I miss the elimination stations. Bring it back!

Casting is a huge issue though.

The cast for the past 2 seasons have been bad and also boring. The producers seemed to made it a goal to cause maximum friction in TAR 20 between teams and even teammates by casting so many hard-headed contestants. I find this type of thing annoying. All this drama between the 3 bickering couples (Brenchel, Dave & Rachel, Vanessa & Ralph). Plus petty squabbles (Vannesa vs Rachel, J.J.'s lame attempts to "stir the pot" while alienating every team, and feeling victimized that Dave & Rachel didn't use the U-turn). Clearly the producers wanted to create "good TV" but I'm sorry, it's just bad.

So far TAR Australia has done a good job casting interesting and likable teams. The cast at  TAR Australia 1 was well balanced. There was only 1 bickering couple (Chris & Anastasia), and only 1 "villain" team (Richard & Joey). Paul & Steve are definitely that team of season 2. The so-called Alpha Males that are jerks. Still they're the type that you love to hate. Some might see Dave (of Dave & Kelly) from Season 1 as arrogant and grating but he's nowhere near Art & JJ or Laurence (of Zac & Laurence) in that capacity. I found him fun to watch actually.

So moderation is the key. Don't go overboard in casting a ton of unlikable and bickering teams.

Is it just me, or are the HD cameras of TAR Australia better than TAR America? The footage of all the scenes from TAR Australia (especially in India) is quite amazing and stunning to look at... while at TAR America, it just seems so.... empty.

Right now, I hate to say it, but TAR Australia 2 is better than all the episodes of TAR 19 or 20, editing wise.

I would love to see a season, where they not go to Asia.

TAR 1: No South America and Oceania
TAR 2: No Europe
TAR 4: No Africa
TAR 8: None of the above

They have always went to Asia, went they have travel around the Globe!

I would love to see this in a season, South America to Europe to Africa to Oceania.
It could be epic if they did Sydney to Los Angeles on the last leg.

Cities i think they should visit:
               Pitstops:
Dublin: Guinness storehouse
Belfast: Titanic museum
Liverpool: Cavern club
Manchester: The Harbour
Madrid: The Estadio Santiago Bernabéu
Rotterdam: The Euromast
Naples: Castel Nuovo
Volgograd: The Motherland Calls statue
Sofia: Hagia Sophia Church
Melbourne: Melbourne Cricket Ground
Udaipur: Jag Mandir
