Was He 'The Weakest Link'?
By Kent Kimes
The Sun News
Accepting an all-expenses paid trip to California for a shot at being on the TV game show "The Weakest Link" was a no-brainer for funeral director Marvin Latimer.
"Look, I work in the funeral business. I see death, doom and destruction every day. You think I'm going to turn down a free three-day vacation to Hollywood?" he said.
He was picked up from the Los Angeles airport in a limo, put up in a five-star hotel and shown the star-studded sights of Tinseltown in late July.
To top it off, he made the cut and appears on "The Weakest Link" at 4:30 p.m. today.
Latimer is the first contestant to be featured from auditions held in Myrtle Beach on June 22, according to show officials.
Because he signed confidentiality agreements with the show's producers, Latimer can't divulge whether he banked a significant amount of take-home money or if he was told, "You are the weakest link, goodbye."
Keeping tight-lipped about the show's outcome wasn't a problem for
Latimer, a Myrtle Beach resident and 1985 graduate of Conway High School. Breaching the confidentiality agreements can cost contestants on "The Weakest Link" lawsuits worth "hundreds of thousands of dollars," said Todd Beck, a show spokesman.
At the urging of his mother, Edna Latimer, co-owner of Latimer Funeral Home in Conway, Latimer decided to try out for "The Weakest Link" when auditions were held at the Ocean Dunes Resort and Villas in Myrtle Beach.
"Luckily ... I got to see everybody go before me and I kind of saw what the producers were looking for," he said. "Some guys were just standing up and saying name, rank, serial number type thing. I've always been like a clown, so I got up and started telling jokes."
He impressed the producers enough during that tryout to earn a trip to Los Angeles for more auditions and a shot at being on the show.
Latimer emceed parties in college and has been writing sketch comedy for a few years, so he hopes his spot on "The Weakest Link" will lead to future entertainment possibilities
and real showbiz credentials.
"You won't make it on Forbes' Fortune 500 list by being the funniest guy at the gym," he said.
